What Trey Leroux's Commitment Means to Ohio State's 2020 Recruiting Class

Please let this be part of Ryan Day’s grand master long-term plan, and not a national power turning into a regional power.

Eh, I didn’t see a whole lot of people complaining about Meyer’s strategy when a low ranked Kevin Feder committed. As long as Ohio State consistently lands top 5 classes, they’re not going anywhere as a national power.

This is definitely where I parked my car.

HS
NorthPoleBuckeye's picture

Did they take Feder after they missed on others or was he a first option, I don't remember much about his recruitment?

HS

He was the 10th commit of the class on June 22nd, 2014.

Kevin Feder Part II......he also dominated as a H.S. DL due to his overwhelming size and inferior competition....this kid has lead feet.

HS

Feder played against the same competition/in the same league as Ronnie Hickman, Tyler Friday, JJB,and Luke Wypler. He never cracked the line-up, but overrated HS competition was certainly not his problem-he played in one of the best leagues in the nation-North Jersey Catholic schools.

O line depth for the upcoming season is alarmingly thin.  I'm not worried about the D. I'm not worried about the new QB.  I am worried about O line depth.  If next season turns into a 2 or 3 loss season, it will be because of injuries on the O line.  We are literally relying on some walk-ons for depth in 2019.  Ohio State can recruit and chase 4 star and 5 star O linemen around the country and miss multiple times on (1) commitments/signings and (2) ultimate production (as the ability to project whether a high school O lineman will produce seems to be the most difficult of any position).  As others have pointed out on this and other threads, while the Urban regime was chasing the higher profile O linemen around the country, a lot of lower profile, often underrated ("under-starred") Ohio O linemen were signing with conference competitors.  The 2020 class is going to be a large class loaded with O linemen.  Some will start, some will transfer, some will be the depth that is currently missing.

For the skill positions, I still see a national/Ohio recruiting push.  How many 5 star high school seniors are there?  I think it's something like 32.  4 stars?  Is it 100?  There are 5 O line positions.  Math tells us you will have comparatively fewer 4 and 5 star O linemen to choose from the pool of high school senior O linemen.  I would think the vast number of high school O linemen will be 3 stars.

With the thought of Ohio State taking possibly 6 linemen in this class we are probably not going to get six 5 stars to come in. There needs to be different tiers, talent wise, but this young man has the tools to be a very good one in a couple of years if the desire is there. Very few linemen come into the BIG ready to start from day one.

HS

Reality check. Day is not going pull in nothing but 4 and 5 stars like Saban until he proves himself by the results on the field. And even Urban took 3 stars. Some work, some don't. Just remember in the immortal words of Judge Smails "The world needs ditch diggers too"

HS

First, congratulations to Trey Leroux. Good for you, young man.

Second, let’s give him time. Recruiting and evaluating 16-17 year olds are both inexact sciences. In five years, he could be an All American. Case in point: in the 2015 class, Jonah Jackson was ranked 1,733rd overall and the 170th best tackle and now some people are saying he could be Ohio State’s best offensive lineman. Time will tell.

HS
Run_Fido_Run's picture

To further your point, it’s 9 months before early signing day and 11 months before NSD. Just for starters, let’s see where Leroux is rated next fall (and, even then, Leroux’s actual value won’t be known until he gets into the program).

Meyer signed a handful of three star “project” guys. The real difference is that he didn’t accept verbals from in-state three-star guys early in the process. As a result, some under-the-radar guys would slip away because MSU or other schools would offer them early and show them lots of love. By the time Urban offered, some of those kids had moved up in the rankings and started to accumulate a more impressive offers list.

Now that Leroux has verballed to Ohio State and is a lock, it’s possible that some top programs that would have offered him now won’t waste the time and resources. So the early verbal could hurt Leroux “on paper,” but if Studz believes that Leroux has great potential, there was potential risk (opportunity cost) to slow playing him, too.

This is not to argue for one approach or the other. Time will tell. Rather, it’s to say that (1) both approaches have their pros and cons and (2) that the merits of this offer to Leroux will be decided, as you note, 2 or 3 years from now.

Also seem to remember an in-state three star that has panned out pretty well. (Munford)

I don't mind us picking up three star in-state linemen as long as they have a mean streak. Skill positions are a different matter entirely, though.

Right that's what I'm saying why would Day offer an sign a non rated O-line men so early? We should be going after best national recruits and keeping these low rated player's as a back up plan .

HS

B/c Day has seen Leroux's film/camp workouts, etc and decided that he is as capable of contributing at tOSU as any other available option. Leroux would not have been offered at this juncture if the staff though they had better available options. You are annoyed w/ Day's evaluation-he disagrees w/ the official starhanderouter narrative, therefore his evaluation his wrong, in your eyes.

I believe that success on the offensive line is hardest to predict in advance, second only to quarterback. This was documented in a couple articles many years ago that compared recruiting rankings to NFL draft order.

Having said that, it would seem that the main issue for 3 start status is the weight ... can he lose weight.  That is a very hard one.

Time to come back to reality with recruiting.  Urban was recruiting on a level this program has never seen.  Urban was going anywhere in the country plucking 5-stars, taking almost anyone he wanted.   Our fan base got spoiled.  That wasn't going to last forever.  Ryan Day isn't going to recruit on that level.  Can't expect Day to snag anyone he wants when he's never done anything as a HC, completely unproven.

HS
gobucks1966's picture

Day has to prove himself recruiting OOS will be a issue until he does. Ryan has little clout and some of this in coming class has Urbans finger prints on some of these kids. We lost a DB that was here because of Urban and trying to get him back.

Denny

It's basically a chicken vs. egg argument at this point. Did OSU make Urban or did Urban make OSU? How will Day fare?

We'll see, but I believe the resilience of the program wins out. We have a certain set of expectations, and I think Day recognizes that.

Sorry if I upset anyone but this Ohio thing is getting old. Rumler a life time Michigan  fan never gave us a sniff and not sure Correll might of been the same case like others from his area have done before. We know the Jackson story. I love Ohio kids like everyone else if they can play here but to fill your 85 spots with Danny Clarks won't get the job done. PSU lost ships for a reason a penalty. Recruiting Ohio kids because they want to play here is nuts and a recipe for disaster. That's what the walk on program is for if you want to play here. I have said 100 times here how many Ohio kids are in the NFL that never went through Columbus first?

HS
High Street Street Fighter's picture

Exactly, and you missed at least 3 Ohio guys who will be in NFL in a month who never played at OSU: Benny Snell (UK), David Bell (WVU), and a dude from Mt. Healthy (Iowa State).....and those are just the guys off the top of my head this year. You can field a good NFL team with all the Ohio guys who never played at OSU.

I think Urban was too enamored with OOS players. He's one of the greatest recruiters in CFB history, but I think he slowed played Ohio players too often. Missing on the 5 star OT from GA or Miss (10% chance of signing with OSU) then coming back to Ohio players with his tail between his legs in January. Many said it was too late....the damage had been done.

HS
stxbuck's picture

Nasty and adequate size are more important for OL than starhanderouter hype and camp performances. If an OOS kid is a straight mauling beast, tOSU will go after them-just ask Luke Wypler and Harry Miller. OL tend to be bigger homebodies than other recruits-so if you see a good one in Ohio, get them in the program quickly, w/out second guessing.

HS
stxbuck's picture

So you would prefer more OOS recruits like Torrance Gibson or Kevin Feder or the OL from South Dakota?

Not every kid in every class is going to pan out-but naively assuming a kid is better simply b/c he is from Florida or Colorado-and not b/c the coaches think he has better film than a kid from Troy or Cleveland is the epitome of dumbassery.

HS
Rico411's picture

I totally agree ....why is Day singing a 3* non rated OT so early in the process ? I mean we should be recruting nationally the best players right now and keeping 3* as a back up plan this is the second O-line men that Day signed that's not even rated. I guess we are going to go back to being a regional power now.

" we play to win the game "

HS
Nutinpa's picture

Urban Meyer had one NC during his tenure criss-crossing the country recruiting.  HIs 5 stars lost to teams like Iowa and Purdue.

Jim Tressel focused on Ohio and had one NC as well.  The only difference is that Tress had Ohio high school coaches in the palm of his hand.  When Luke Fickell left Ohio State, Meyer was left with a group of OH high school coaches who wanted to tell Urban to go fuck himself.  IMHO....that's why Day is spending what appears to be a disproportionate time in Ohio right now.

HS
Rico411's picture

I guess we will go back to being a Regional power from a national one . It make no sense to sign a low 3* O-line men when there are so many 5 and 4 Stars still in play.

" we play to win the game "

HS
High Street Street Fighter's picture

Rico: there's still two more spots for 4&5 star OL. They got the two 3 Star Ohio OL who might have gone elsewhere if they waited until December to offer. So that frees them to pursue the highly rated OOS OL for the final two spots while knowing they don't have to worry about the in-state guys.

Take a guy like this early and we are reaching, take him late and he is most important piece of puzzle. Guarantee he's already receiving advice from the strength and conditioning staff to focus his development for the college game. Kid has some serious God-given measurables and now he has access to arguably the best trainers in the country. The ratings don't reflect heart and if this kid has a big one, he'll find his place on the Buckeye O-line in due time regardless of his recruiting ranking. We've all seen 5-stars bust and 3-stars kick ass. Here's to hoping Trey follows in the footsteps of all the stellar 3-stars who have done Buckeye Nation proud.

Your wrong on that a little bit some of these players had offers to big time programs and we won out on. Hooker was a sleeper he only played one year of high school ball. I said a million times I don't look at stars but look more at who else is offering the player. It's been reported here already a sure red shirt for a position of need.  When we have other offers to players who may step in day 1 and contribute even if it's a back up role. Big Ben was a te in high school and I remember how pissed everyone got when he chose Miami of Ohio. lol This young man reminds me of how Wisconsin recruits. They can't bring in a lot of elite kids but after 3 or 4 years in the system their kids might start his junior or senior year. Time will tell how this shakes out.

Denny

HS
napbuck's picture

Big Ben was a QB his senior year along with playing LB, he sat his first three years behind the coaches son. I watched him play his senior year when I was in middle school against my High School team Napoleon, he torched us that game. I think the staff knows full well what they are getting in Leroux and James for that matter to, instate kids who are more likely to wait there turn and provide depth until they are fully ready to contribute. I think the staff knew they were going to have to take 2-3?of these types of kids this year so why not take in state kids. Now they know they can focus more effort and time into signing the best 2 OL they can find, without having as much worry about them wavering.

In a class where we expect to take at least 6 olineman and know that 3 are likely to redshirt, this is the kind of guy you take a chance on.  As a 16/17 year old he already elite size and has shown athleticism to go with that size.  It's not like when we signed Thayer Munford it was a slam dunk LT of the future.  We took an athlete with elite size but raw skills.  Sometimes those work out.

In high school I hated anything to do with Bellevue . . . but growing up and moving away and attending OSU and making friends with many people from other NOL schools, I can't really build up any animosity anymore. Rather, I feel a kinship with other NW Ohioans. We all had to deal with those terrible Michigan fans that seem to multiply in number as you near Toledo and the border.

As a side note, Russ Kuhns is the only guy to ever flat out beat me on several plays. As my coach said, "Bigger, faster, stronger". It bugged me for a while until I saw him playing in the Shoe as a Badger and after catching a pass, he swatted down an OSU player like an annoying insect.

Yeah, in high school, it's easy to think those guys from the next town over are the worst. :) I actually lived out in Seneca county, and my mom had previously lived in Tiffin, so we used to go to the mall there (when there was a mall there to speak of!) And the public library was way better than Bellevue's, so you guys had that going for you.

I was class of '95, and while I was friends with a lot of our players, I was in the band. That's funny about Russ--he and his brother Chad went to the same church I did. Those were some big, strong, fast boys. :) They both played at Wisconsin, and it sure was fun to know them and see them on TV on Saturdays.

Day has four linemen locked in. Two are rated in the top 2 of their given position. Two are depth building long term projects that aren’t going to transfer out in two years because they’re unhappy about playing time. Now Day can swing for the fences and go for two more nationally rated guys. Day did a great job of holding last year’s class together and has done a great job of not only holding onto but also building this year’s class. If Day rips off eleven wins and has the offense playing like last year the recruits are going to be knocking at the door. Everyone should just be patient.

Some of our experts that follow OSU agree we jumped the gun with this kid. They echo what I said forget the star ranking. There is no ND PSU Wisconsin MSU teams we battle with for talent. If we continue to recruit this way no matter what state their from we will be never reach the final four and compete with the SEC and Clemson's of the world. Sure we can sit back and bring up Fedder of South Dakota and for everyone of those we can say Justin Hillard and others.  What kills me and the so called experts is why jump so soon with so many others ahead of him rated so much higher and signing day so far off makes no sense. The only bright spot about this I heard we are taking 7 lineman in this class and getting 7 elite lineman would be very hard to pull off when everyone wants to play day one.
