Darron Lee and Malik Hooker as well if memory serves. But they weren't that good.... wait....

Love the in state kids who have the size and mentality to become great. Also, pretty sure I am going to trust coaches that get paid 7 figures (or at least high 6 figures) and develop relationships with the kid/vet them over some guy who makes 50K and ranks them based on a few hours of film highlights.

HS

HS

I trust the evaluation acumen of the Ohio State coaching staff when it comes to a 3* player much more than I do Michigan's staff. IMO, Michigan is forced to take 3* players because not enough 4* and 5* players want to come to play for them, whereas, 4* and 5* players are more inclined to come to Ohio State.

When we "take" a 3* I trust that that the staff sees something in them that makes them think they will turn out to be a 4*, or even a 5*, on the field after they have been on the team for a year or so and received coaching from the Ohio State staff.

You are watching tape of him playing a 2-8 division VII team. I live in Norwalk and have seen this young man since grade school. He is massive and a good kid BUT he is NOT mobile. Kid got destroyed by quick lineman from Sandusky in league and playoffs. This was based on size alone and he is a BIG project. In the playoffs they did not run behind him on 4th and 1. I was shocked by the offer. I wish him the best but Mick will need to get those feet moving. Downvoters, this is not bashing the kid, this is truth. Watch last years playoff film.

Damn right I'm a Buckeye

I think Isaiah overcame similar troubles--certainly not every challenge, but he improved a whole lot.  This guy has Prince's work ethic and applies himself here, he'll better than succeed.  I'm also thinking that Studrawa's underappreciated some (but not by Day).

I think Coach Day gets what Urban did miss. Urban recruited so much nationally that he missed the in state talent. For instance, think of Kentucky and RB Benny Snell. Snell was the best running back in the SEC. He went to school right up the road from OSU. He wanted to go to OSU but never got offered. Now, he would have been a project for sure but no doubt would have been good at OSU. Coach Day is closing the door on teams picking Ohio players but is still recruiting nationally. Brilliant.

Snell ran with a chip on his shoulder. He looked good against Tennessee and the SEC East. I will acknowledge it. Then I saw him at the combine. He was shockingly slow.

HS
allinosu's picture

I like it but color me a little concerned about all seven 2020 recruits are offensive. It's SEEMS a little unusual unless you are a BIG 12 team. Day is offensive minded. Under Urban our biggest starred players were defensive on average. It would be nice to see some defensive BOOMS.

HS
AZ Buckeye13's picture

From what I have read it is because, with all the new defensive coaches, the evaluation of recruits on the defensive side of the ball almost has to start over again.

HS
Buckeye Chuck's picture

Benny Snell had a nice career, but would he have played ahead of the backs we've had here the last several years?

Bottom line is we can't take every kid who wants to come here, even the ones who want to come here and can also perform at a high level. It's really only an issue if we're missing out on players who could have shored up weak links.

The kid has a motor for his size, always looking to make a play and has heart. With 100,000 strong of his kind, he will move mountains. I love it!

HS
11UrbzAndSpices's picture

Shows a good motor on defense but is lacking that killer instinct on offense, he seems to just wall people off instead of burying them in the ground. And we keep recruiting these giant linemen with lower ratings. Interesting to see if that's a coincidence or a change in culture. Iunno, trust the Urbz...oh....uh....the Dayz? Studz?

Going to be very honest here coach's will tell you evaluating o line is hard to do at the high school level. On the other hand why is his offer sheet so poor when looking at the teams that have offered? We have over 20 offers out there for the best in this years class and this is what we are getting. I don't care how big he is you have to be able to move and I want  no part of lineman like we had with Knox. With so many great offers out there and a ton of time till signing day why the rush. Sure he is a Ohio kid and look what Kentucky along with MSU finish each year with second level Ohio kids. I don't like this get one bit. We either can't get any elite guys or Day has been told to fill up on Ohio players. I hope he proves me wrong but if this is how it's going to be hope we are happy never getting back in the final four. Just a hunch maybe the other 20 offers have told us thanks but no thanks jmo.

Gobucks, out of curiosity how did you feel about the big kid from Indy (Dawand Jones) that we signed?

HS
gobucks1966's picture

I like him for two reasons one very athletic and a basketball player and has played very little football. So he has a high ceiling. Remember too he was a steal for late in the game after we lost the WV kid.

Denny

HS
RollRedRoll's picture

Thanks for your answer, and yes Jones does appear to have a high ceiling. I know nothing about this Leroux kid, I just assume the staff has seen something they really like. Does anyone know if he has done any camps, because that seems to be where kids get their rankings from.

HS
buckeyenationlouisvillebranch's picture

I mentioned this in an earlier comment but Coach Day has made a commitment to closing the door on other teams feasting in our backyard. Notice during the Urban Meyer Era, a number of B1G teams have gotten good players from Ohio and used them against us. Day is simply not going to let other competitors come in and grab players that should play at OSU. Day is going with the hybrid approach of Urban's recruiting and that of Tressel and Cooper.

Football is a religion in Ohio. We attend our service every fall on the banks of the Olentangy. A place we affectionately call "the shoe".

HS

intriguing post, Gobucks1966.

'jmo' - i do  not command the power, nor the courage, to 'be honest'.  I am 'slightly' flawed.  And i have a minor conflict of interest in understanding, let alone evaluating, my self and my intentions.

So... 'sadly'  i am also DQ from 'progressing' to "very honest".  ;-{)}

But...since it seems we have this inclination to judge whatever whenever however...

i can logically infer that we are all seeking... 'honesty honestly'... in our own self-interest.

HS
Buck68's picture

Buckbornbred-

isn't it in each and all of our best interests to keep on seeking more information about committed recruits... rather than let a great concept - trust - become the cover for stopping at some point and making a conclusion?

and no one 'forces' us to 'trust' ... we 'have' 'choice'.

Agree 110 % throw the stars away but what other top 30 or 40 program has offered? Starting to think Drake chased Urban out and is now doing our recruiting keep Ohio kids in state. The timing of this makes me realize why coach Meyer would not extend offers to Ohio kids too early. Hope it works out well for both. Only time will tell.

HS
KillerNut's picture

This one confuses me.

Trey and his family are lifelong UM fans. It seems really early for him to be committing, the entire city of Norwalk expected him to wait to see if Harbaugh came calling. Maybe he made a change for the better, or maybe he is hoping being committed to TOSU gets him more notice.

Trey is a beast. I think the “low motor” stuff fixes itself in college. He is so massive that he likely just gets bored blocking rushers half his size that have no shot at getting around him. On defense he has more of a challenge and I think it shows on the tape.

I’m no scout, but Trey is a 4 Star player. He is going to crush it, be it here or somewhere else. I just personally don’t feel like we should write him down in pen.

HS
gobucks1966's picture

That's the problem they are half his size which makes it hard to evaluate but not a 4 star imo. Not a coach or scout either how ever I been watching high school ball for 60 years and played four in high school. Again look at his offer sheet will answer why TTUN didn't offer or anyone else for that matter.

Looks like Day wants to get back to having physically imposing lines.  That's what I remember about the 2014 NC team.  Now, they weren't this big, but that was nasty physically dominant line.  They bullied dlineman.  Now these mammoths need to get the footwork and technique of the college gamed down, but if they do, there may not be a dline that can withstand that.

For the people saying that Ohio State should go after the elite linemen, well that's all fine and dandy, unfortunately there's so many starting spots to go around. This kid is definitely a project. He has the size but he needs to polish his game. However, I think Studs is an awful coach and not up to the task of developing players. Day keeping him might end up biting him in the ass. Personally, I see this kid as a scout team player and he'll never see the field.
