Of course on day 1 he's not going to shut Baldwin down and he's not just going to hand the keys over to Fields...
I think we all know which way this one should go, but Day is doing the right thing by letting it play out on the field.
Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.
you make it sound like it's already decided that fields is the starter and how should it go? we haven't seen fields run the budkeye offense any more than MB. i want them both to compete and the guy who does the best should be the starter. remember, the reason we got haskins as a starter for just one year is due to urbans refusal to allow him (or anyone) to compete with barrett in '17.
I would add we haven't seen Fields play an entire College game either. We have no idea if he can run a College offense or not.
Rooting for Baldwin.
Why? I'm asking in a sincere way.
I don't know why any fan would root for one of the other in this situation. Neither one of them has done anything to make them unlikeable. There isn't enough film on either of them to even try to make a determination about who is better (unlike the Haskins v Burrow competition where they'd both taken a fair amount of snaps at tOSU, plus the 2018 spring game). I'm not rooting for either one of them because I know the coaches will make the right choice on this one
What did you want him to say? "I'm naming a starter based on high-school hype"?
I couldn't care less which one of them actually wins. Just have a real competition and let the best guy have the job.
Less on high school hype, more on OSU actively pursuing a transfer from him while knowing that would scare off the backup and presumptive starter. If Fields doesn't win the job (which he will) it would mean the staff screwed up royally.
"I don't think you necessarily have to get a trophy to be a winner." - Nick Saban 1/2/15.
well said brutus - it should be EARNED on the field - not given away. i'm still convinced haskins would have beaten out jt barrett if given the chance. i still don't understand why urban was against barrett and haskins competing for the starting job.
It's very refreshing to see another fan say that they don't care who wins. I can't believe people are actually rooting for one guy or the other instead of just being happy that it seems like we have two solid options, and trusting that the coaches will give the job to the best man
“IT'S GOING TO BE A BATTLE”
NARRATOR: It wasn't

Is the narrator Ron Howard? That’s how it played in my head.
I was thinking more James Earl Jones myself

Oh SNAP! We have a winner

“Being average means you are as close to the bottom as you are to the top.” John Wooden
The Ron Howard thing was an Arrested Development reference as he often uses the same phrasing. It seems that I was the only one who heard it that way!
Day pretty much said all the nothings you'd expect him to say at this point. He's not going to say much of anything until further down the line. I know we're all excited (us Buckeye fans) for this season, so see what's coming etc, but I wonder if this hype and pressure will negatively impact the progress of Baldwin and Fields. I hope not. We will see.
For the first time in a few years, I don't care about the QB battle. The presumptive favorite is obviously Fields, if Baldwin were to somehow beat him out he will have earned it. I'd like to shift all focus to the defense, the LB's in particular, which so far has been the one group least mentioned after this first practice.
I'm at that point too. The winner of the job will be announced whenever it's announced and everything will be fine. Like you, I just want to heavily follow the linebackers and I hope we get frequent updates of who is look good, who has moved up/down on the depth chart, etc.
I really don't understand why there weren't more updates/notes on the linebackers. We've heard about this hybrid position, but we still don't know if it'll just be a package or if that'll be our base defense. I haven't seen anything about Mitchell, Hilliard, Gant, or Pope either.
Regardless, I'm sure we'll get more LB news moving forward. I think the QB battle and just the fact that Day is starting his first spring as head coach kind of stole the show on day 1. Once things pick up I'm sure there will be more to tell anyways. In the meantime, I'd still like Mattison and Hafley to say what the base defense will be
Everything you said. I hope you are right about the QB battle being front and center for day 1 but we see a transition into something more with the defense. Unfortunately, I feel like we are going to see the same regurgitated article written 100 different ways about the QB battle through August because that's what gets the clicks. And I'm not necessarily saying here on 11W...I'm saying in general. Yes we know Haskins is gone, yes we know that Fields transferred and Martell left. Yes we know it's going to take time for Fields to learn the offense and there is still a chance that he and Baldwin have a true battle. But let's leave it at that until there is some actual noteworthy update on them with how they performed in practice or something along those lines. Here in America we like to write the same articles twenty different ways and consider it a new article every time.
Exactly. I'd love real updates, but I don't wanna continuously read the same recap (but worded in a different way as you pointed out) of the current situation. The QB competition is also one where you have 2 choices, so there's not much to think about or too many insights to make that haven't already been made.
Defensively, there's a lot to consider. Between our base alignment, who will be in what position, and who will be a starting linebacker besides Malik Harrison, among other things; that's why I'd really love to get as many defensive updates as possible. That side of the ball will make or break us next season
That side of the ball will make or break us next season
And one time for the people in the back! This is so true...everyone is focused on the offense. The offense is going to fall anywhere on the spectrum between good and unstoppable. They will probably float a little bit especially early in the season. The defense is going to determine if we win a 3rd conference championship and compete for the NC again or not. We will get 100 updates on the QB situation (see non-updates) while someone could literally write a book on the defense this year. New scheme, all new coaching, freaking possibility of a new position created...but let's hear more about how the QB's look sharp but have a lot to learn.
Just hope Baldwin doesn't leave once Fields is named the starter
"Families is where our nation finds hope, where wings take dream."
He has a history of staying.
Let’s base it off who has the better spring game. 60+% on here did that with Burrow last year. So, that’s how it’s done here.
i'd say haskins won the job based on his talent - he clearly had a much better arm ....and it showed during the season.
Chugunov 4 Heisman. Calling it right now.
I aim to misbehave.
Garbage time = Chug Time!
If you have nothing to hide you have nothing to fear.
So when we are up by 6+ scores in the 4th, the shoe will be chanting "Chug! Chug! Chug! Chug!"?
This article goes against everything the 11w staff stands for..
Day: "Its going to be a battle."
11w staff: whaaatt!! but but butttttt fields has more stars and didnt come here to be a backup!!! he must be named the starter NOWWW!!!
That's 11W as a whole really.
If you're a highly ranked recruit and you're not finding yourself on the field and someone lower ranked beat you out, it's the coaches playing favorites and not playing the best players. 90% of people on here are predicting guys to start that we literally haven't even seen on the field yet.
well, i think baldwin should be given an equal chance to win the starting job - if fields is as good as advertised, he'll win the job. if he's not - then we're better off with baldwin.
Letsgo, I’m sincerely wanting to know if you have examples of this? I read a good chunk of articles on here and I’ve not had that perception.
Pigskins & Porkrinds
I liked Day's quote about not being afraid to fail early. I think that's good psychology. Cynics could say that means "Justin Fields doesn't know the offense yet", but the truth is that the only quarterback who has thrown a pass in a season game is Chugunov. They're all green right now.
"We get paid to score touchdowns, not kick field goals"
-- Urban Meyer
You mean for WV? If you're including that, you have to include the passes Fields threw at Georgia.
I believe Fields has thrown a pass in a season game.
I'm talking about Ohio State, specifically. Only Chugunov has thrown a pass in an Ohio State season game.
He actually hasn't though. Took a few snaps but never threw a pass

If you go out in the cold today wearing that jersey, don’t forget to wrap yourself in the holly blanket also pictured above.
Looks like a brand new jersey courtesy of Hong Kong. Still cool though.
At least we're not from Detroit...
Pretty sure that's an NCAA violation (CFB players aren't allowed to have their last names printed on merch jerseys). Time for a suspension. /s
Does the front side say "Starter"?
This will be a battle the same way the Bucks game against Florida Atlantic will be a battle. I mean that as no slight towards Baldwin, just that Fields is so presumed the starter that it would be a huge shock if it were anything different. I get doing the dance and calling it an open competition though, and the dance has it's place.
Videos of practice show that Baldwin has a quicker release almost like Dwayne than Fields - not that Fields had a slow release, but the ball pops nicely out of Baldwin's hand... interested to see this battle play out.
Also, curious to see that they simulated taking snaps under center (GASP~!)
"I don't apologize for anything. When I make a mistake, I take the blame and go on from there." - Woody Hayes
Yes but the hype train is going fast. No time to slow down and actually watch my Texas guy throw the ball.
Day is full of *hit
"Fields and Baldwin each missed a number of throws." Great, another 3-4 years of not throwing WR's open and 25 QB runs. I feel the JTB4 arguments getting a 2nd wind.
It should be a battle, that's what competing is about, period...we know the likely outcome, but we should not know the absolute outcome....every position should be best person for the job, if not, you are hurting the team. If you are a "so called stud" and you get beat out then maybe the other guys is truly a stud...that's sports, life, etc.
"I don't want to be around average, why be around average!" -UFM
All Baldwin has seen at QB ahead of him - whether high school or college are guys who have started in college and a couple who either now or in the VERY NEAR future will play in the NFL! I suspect that Fields is amazing yet not sure Baldwin gets overwhelmed or out played!
Fields on the other hand might get concerned that the guy he came to move past is not the victim he might have assumed.
I would rather be on hand with 10 men then elsewhere with 10,000 - Timur Lenk
Fields couldn't beat out Jake Fromm, so not sure why everyone feels he is / should be the starter. Fromm stats for the last two years are not 'over the top', he really did not throw much. He might have the leadership and game management qualities a coach looks for, and he did take the dogs a long way..Still..
I'm hoping the QB battle is decided by competition. I'm sure the coaches will make the right call, when the time comes. May the best QB win.
A true freshman couldn't beat out a 2 year starter that went to the playoffs the previous season? Shocking I tell ya. Fromm fits Smart's system better as well.
I'm not saying Fields should be given the job, but cmon man.
I mentioned the fact that Fromm took his team a long way.
Fromm was a true freshman starter in 2017, therefore, he was only a ONE year starter when he beat out Fields in 2018. Georgia
My point is, what has Fields done to convince anyone that he should start, other than being a 5 star recruit.
Bucket, this statement about Fields not beating out Fromm was made a million times when we were bringing Fields in and all the Tate fanboys were posting everywhere on this site in a frenzy. Fields’ coach has a reputation for using Fromm-style game management QBs and it’s known among the UGA fan base that Fromm has always been Smart’s “guy”. Similar to how Haskins never really had a chance when JT was here, that’s how folks around Georgia thought of Fields trying to overtake Fromm...it was never going to happen. All that being said, there are still many variables that could have come into play that had nothing to do with who was “better”. As we weren’t there and don’t have first hand knowledge of anything, saying Fields couldn’t beat out Fromm should mean very little in the context of how good a QB he will be for us.
Username checks out
Hmmm... wonder why Day didn't do the LSU process.... Burrow transferred in and started as a 4th/5th string, beat out everyone to be the starter. Instead, he let Fields run with the 1s on day 1. We all know what we know but its just bad that the actions not matching the message.
Somebody had to start with the the 1s... Who's to say they didn't play paper/rock/scissors, have a coin-toss or utilize some other method beforehand?
Burrow also transferred in well after spring practice had concluded, but whatever.
Shandy is not beer
Why does it matter though? Neither Baldwin, nor Chugonov threw a pass last season. Fields, on the other hand, threw for 328yds and 4TDs with a 69.2% completion rate in addition to rushing for 263yds and 4TDs while averaging 6.3yds per carry.
I get that your point is that because Fields is a transfer, he should start from the bottom, which I understand. Still though, transfer QBs are brought in expected to be starters pretty frequently and it's not uncommon to put them with the first team right away. I, personally, could've cared less rather it was Fields or Baldwin that took the majority of the first team snaps today because I know both guys will get an equal chance.
If Baldwin outperforms Fields, I have no doubt that he'll get the job. I guess I just don't get why so many fans seem to think that Fields is just being given the job
I chuckled a bit at Day's interview yesterday. He basically said Chug is giving us depth and he's getting his Masters, so he's important. And, then he continued to talk about the battle that would ensue between Baldwin and Fields, but then corrected himself saying that, of course, Chris will have a shot too.
Well that answered my question as to why no one was talking about Chugunov all year.
If you die before you die, then you won't die when you die.
:( Poor Chug
Maybe he’ll surprise us?
You never know! Think Cardale Jones in 2014!
Just laugh this off like last year when fans thought Burrow actually had a chance to be the starter. Everyone inside the program knew Haskins was always going to be the starter. The fans that wanted Burrow were on the hes from Ohio narrative (plus they like white guys).
Fields will be the starter. Spring game performance does not mean squat. I do think Day will give Baldwin alot of playing time- much more than Meyer would have.
I just hope Day can fix the mess the defense caused last year with the worst LB play in 40 years.
What... you don't like white guys????
I'm a huge Haskins fan have been from the beginning. Hell I called for him to start over JT. Your comment about white people pissed me the hell off. GTFO with your race baiting bullshit. If the site had any balls you'd be banned.
That's not the first time a comment like that has been made on here, especially when it came to Borland and Werner last season. It was ridiculous what some people were implying.
Agree that the hopeful few who wanted to see the Ohio native with very good skills get a fair shot. Just that most of us knew he wouldn't really stack up to DH's ceiling. And he turned out to be an excellent leader and game manager at LSU, not a first round NFL draft choice. (Note the obvious lack of race-baiting in this post).
Fields and Baldwin should throw a couple hundred passes per day to our WR talent. Timing and catch percentage increasing each week. By early August you have QB 1 and QB 1b. Talented and very "practice" experienced WR talent ready to impress. We get a great advantage if our back up is game ready. Win by 60 with backup in at 36'ish points.
You just never know!
