Last paragraph is savage, Kevin.
Also, otters are very punable.
River Otters have got to be the coolest animals ever. Kick back and pound clams on your belly.
I've been saying for years that Otters have the most fun that I've seen. They just look happy all the time.
The last sentence is what I hope my retirement is like
There was nothing wrong with their previous mascot.
And, great! Another weasel! Wisconsin, Minnesota, ttun, and Illinois!

There was nothing wrong with their previous mascot.
I agree entirely but that’s all I think I can say about that without jailing myself. Because once I start down that road, it’s leading to nothing but bannable comments.
Well I responded to the person below and I hope that's not bannable! I appreciate the comment and presumed upvote Calpoppy. I hope you are well, friend!
I think that's easy for you to say. And I will admit I actually like the idea of Illinois celebrating the culture rather than some tomahawk chop, which Chief Illibuck seemed to me to be. But my not being offended doesn't mean everyone isn't.
With that being said....an otter???
I bleed scarlet...literally
I guess I always thought along the lines of the Seminoles, they considered it a badge of honor that their tribe was used to symbolize strength, teamwork, and a group to be emulated by friends and feared by foes. And for people seeking education and bettering of their lives and the world in the territory of their tribe to share their name. But to each their own I suppose. That's how I see it, but I understand how some can be offended and feel like they're being mocked. As someone of Scandinavian and Irish descent I try to think of the positives of the Minnesota Vikings and Notre Dame Fighting Irish even though they're portrayed in more ways that are stereotypes than most Native American groups these days (note I said most, not all).
Just wanted to add to your thought here, Watched a documentary from when one of the first protesters of Chief Illiniwek, (she herself was native) explained why she was protesting. And her complaint was that the Chief was not a representation of a native tribe, i.e. paying homage like the Seminole at FSU, but rather a caricature of natives, which she, and others were offended by.
These significant otters are fans of the new mascot.
Buckeye in the desert of Washington state.
A living river otter would be interesting.
Because badgers, gophers, and terrapins (wolverines are boring) weren't wild enough.
Tell me someone in Champaign misspelled "other" on the new recruit selection ballot...
I like it. Probably fun and amusing for the kids which is pretty much what mascots are for in my opinion.
I aim to misbehave.
First thing I thought of as well.

THE Ohio State University
What the heck was it before? I really can't remember.
I know there's a game Saturday, and my ass will be there.
I Believe In Ohio State.
Their previous mascot was Chief Illiniwek - from 1926 to 2007. He bit the dust in 2007 because he was perceived as an offensive portrayal of native Americans. They have not had a replacement until now.
This is correct. These schools nicknamed after Native American tribes are gonna have a hard time finding a decent and fitting mascot.
Introducing Alma Otter: The Mascot Illini Nation Deserves.
Illinois fans should take that personally
emotionally exhausted and morally bankrupt
The “for some reason” at the end of the title is just perfect. LOL!!!

If I identify as an otter, can I be offended now and demand they replace it?

The Otter vs. The Illibuck. So confused ...
"We get paid to score touchdowns, not kick field goals"
-- Urban Meyer
IlliBuck no longer exist... it is now the OtterBuck trophy lol Was the trophy originally a turtle carved from the wood from a Buckeye tree?....it is also the only trophy game the FB Buckeyes play and I think fans quit caring about the trophy being a thing decades ago. Strange that we never had a Trophy with ttun for the game and the only one we do have is with Illinois. Does the OtterBuck trophy now come into existence and will it be an Otter carved out of the wood of a Buckeye tree?
Well, hopefully no live otters are involved. Let the tradition continue.
The original was a live turtle, death intervened

Alma Otter... is this one of the few mascots that are seemingly female with that name? This has got to be a play on alma mater ...
The name of the statue is "Alma Mater".
This otter be fun
Feed the trolls
Here ya go, just write the scores across the belly
And give it a football rather than a clam.
sad days we live in
That mascot is offensive to otters.
Cute, cuddly little thing. Soft as Charmin.
Everybody wants to be heard, and the easiest way to be the loudest is to be the hater
It doesn't do clams, its a river otter. Sis is an alum, says this isn't the mascot, just a proposal by the student body, but has to be approved and she said it doesn't have a chance.
Apparently Alma Mater is a bronze statue on their campus and illnois boasts a shit ton of otters in the state:
The 10,000-pound statue depicts a mother-figure wearing academic robes and flanked by two attendant figures representing "Learning" and "Labor", after the University's motto "Learning and Labor." Sited at the corner of Green and Wright Streets at the heart of the campus, the statue is an iconic figure for the university and a popular backdrop for student graduation photos. It is appreciated for its romantic, heraldic overtones and warmth of pose. The statue was removed from its site at the entrance to the university for restoration in 2012 and was returned to its site in the spring of 2014.

Otterbein is not happy about this.
Time to schedule a rivalry game to settle it!
Uh oh, looks like someone at Illinois was a little premature with that publish button. This was scheduled for a 4/1 release, right?
If we wait long enough, I'm sure the Otter mascot will offend somebody.

So, they are now no long the Illinois Illini? But now the Illinois Otters?
Send the Earth Reverberating
Yeah, that part confuses me.
And amuses me as well.
In old Ohio there's a team that's known throughout the land...
I'm confused too. You would think someone otter know.
Bwahahahahahahahaha an Otter! Seriously? an Otter? We ott not make fun of the Fightin water weasels.
You win with people.
One of the few Christmas movies I try and watch every year. Jim Henson was the shit.
You got to be weaslin me? It's not nice to weasel around and make fun of water weasels.
So does this mean the Ill-buck is going to become the Otter-Buck where we get a fuzzy animal every time we beat them?

This is otter non-sense.
This mascot looks like a deformed Clemson tiger. Otter than that, I can live with it.
Or the sane looking version of it.
