Wish the best for Kendall Sheffield.

This is why I HATE the combine. Watch my tape and maybe a pro day. Fuck the combine

No shit. How many Hall of Famers claim “bench press champion”? What the fuck!

HS

Yeah, watched a LB apparently blow out his hammy running the 40 too.

You’re looking at the current situation which is making you react that way. Remember these athletes probably bench press 2 or 3 times a week. They don’t get that big without lifting. He just happened to tear a pec. Don’t blame the combine.

HS

They should eliminate the bench press altogether. It doesn’t really translate over to football strength anyway. I can bench more than quite a few of the guys that tested at the combine and they’d throw me around like a rag doll on a football field.

Damn! All that mattered for Sheffield was that 40 time. That sucks so bad.

HS

Important combine for him, if it’s serious this would be a big blow to his draft stock. Hopefully it’s nothing serious and he can at least run, even if he is unable to participate in drills. HEAL UP!

Disagree to an extent.

His speed is proven and so is his coverage.  His only weakness is not finishing and possibly not turning his head; however in the NFL he will be coached otherwise.

There's a knock on Sheffield, but in reality some of the passes he gave up were indefensible.  QBs seemed to make unlikely throws his way.

I just hope the injury isn't too serious.

Thank you Urban Meyer and Gene Smith

Not hating on Sheffield, but if he were proven in coverage he’d be a first round corner. His athletic ability is unquestioned. IMO his technique and coverage skills is where NFL teams wanted to see improvement, which is why missing the on field portion of the combine could be a big deal for his stock. Regardless, I’m sure he’ll bounce back

I have to imagine running would be extremely difficult without the use of a pec.

HS

The starting position for the 40 yard dash certainly would be.

Pec injuries aren't too serious. They only hurt if you breathe or use your arms.

damn, hope he’s ok.

This has bothered me for some time. Some guys come and do every drill and try to give it their all, including high draft prospects, while others come and get their measurements and bounce. I understand some players need the extra face time with scouts, but Sheffield would blaze his 40 and that would help his stock more than any other combine drill.

I’m not sure what the answer is, but it feels like some guys get a pass.

Damn. He suffered a similar injury to Billy Price at the Combine a year ago. BUT Billy was also able to return in time for TC from that injury and this does sound like it's not as serious as Billy's injury was. But this won't help his draft stock no question.

An asshole.

At least I don’t downvote every comment by Allin because that would be too obvious! Duh!

Would be great to run tomorrow if possible. Healed by pro day at least. Injured on the bench press ? Was it the first time that he had used it ?

HS

Billy Price had basically the same injury also doing the bench press... and now he he is a Bengal. Life hasn't gotten better for him.

If it’s a torn pec he’s not running tomorrow or at pro day. Hopefully it’s just a strain but quitting mid rep and screaming is a bad sign

Guys shouldn't be tearing pecs lifting 225 lbs. Is there an area for them to warm up with lighter weight?

HS

I’m sure he wasn’t trying. Freak accidents happen

I don't know. Maybe they are not providing them with the necessary time and equipment to warm up.

HS

I am not saying it specifically in Sheffield's case, but a lot of these guys use PED's, especially during combine prep. It doesn't surprise me at all that you see muscle tears and strains..also dehydration is a factor.

HS
Barfolomew's picture

Didn't this same thing happen to Billy Price?

HS
Cooper's picture

Hey, let’s stop testing bench press because no football players needs to exert any force while they are laying down on their back on a field. Also, second year in a row where a Buckeye has torn his pectoral muscle. Dumb way to test strength.

This is definitely where I parked my car.

HS
Buckeye06's picture

bench is one of the absolute best tests of strength unless you're going to have the squat and deadlift then run a 40 within 48 hours (an awful idea).

no one has to participate

Why is a CB bench pressing??? Other guys have skipped this altogether. Didn't Dre'mont skip the bench press - and wisely so? This should be a lesson going forward for everybody. Sheffield had little to gain, and maybe everything to lose. He's a CB. Not even a safety, for cryin' out loud. So just don't do it.

I'd rather be a minute early than an hour early, 'cause I like to procrastinate.

Is it just me, or is this a senseless injury? Why is a cornerback expected to max out on the bench press? I could understand the leg press, or some core balance exercise, but a cornerback? Seriously?

If a team that runs press coverage intended on drafting him his bench would be important. I just don't think he was that guy to begin with so he probably should of passed on it. Hopefully it don't his draft stock to much.

HS

Damn it Kendal...get better soon!

Hopefully he's able to run Monday. If not, let's all pray he heals sufficiently by his pro-day and get clocked at the Woody.

Totally blows.  I feel like I'm starting to agree with people that limit their combine. Perhaps participating only where you need to prove something or if you are so good you just want to show off a bit to raise your stock.  Minimum necessary to assure draft position.

I was excited to see OSU with 3 of top 5 40's but I guess now Kendall won't be able to participate in even our Pro Day.

Anyone else curious about how poor our showing has been in the weight room? I guess it has surprised me considering how much I respect Mariotti.

HS

Nooooooooooooooo

Damn it! Hate injuries already but at the damn combine! C'mon that's just bullshit. So sad to hear.

Hope he makes it back too 100% and gets an opportunity.

I know there's a game Saturday, and my ass will be there.

I doubt this will impact where he's drafted unless it appears that his potential playing time as a rookie would be affected. If he can't run tomorrow ... well, it's not like people don't know he's pretty fast.

Certain players need to run the 40 first.  Nobody gives a shit how many times a DB can put up 225

HS
MD-PAbuck's picture

+1, first thing I thought too. His only choice was to skip the other drills, but itd be chaotic if each player did drills in any order.

HS
teddyballgame's picture

NFL might want to look at which drills have the highest injury rates and maybe do those last?  Also certain drills are more important for specific position groups...let them do those first.  Fortunately, there's plenty of tape out there on Kendall running so hopefully it won't be a big issue for him.

HS
SpielzWheelz's picture

He may heal in time for Training Camp, but the difference will be him there as a FA signing vs. being drafted had he ran the 40.  I'm sure the word out there his technique/craft didn't get exactly the best coaching since Coombs left, can't teach that speed he possesses. There is track film to attest that, and I'm sure his Agency will get those tapes out to teams pronto. I watched every second of the Combine and there was no shortage of anyone with a mic talking about the SPEED of our beloved Buckeyes.  I sincerely hope Coach Day does not let that area slip while recruiting in the future.

No DB should ever lift

No OL should ever run a 40

and anyone hurt at the combine should be allowed to return to college if eligible

What is the point of having a db bench press? Risk of injury present while a bench press doesn't indicate a db's ball coverage ability.

HS

Tough break for Sheffield. Feel Sheffield will be undrafted which will benefit him in the long run. I hope he doesn't rush it like price did last year. You could tell price didn't perform as expected and later was injured again. I wish a speedy recovery for Sheffield.

Go Bucks!

Why does he even need to do the bench press drill?  What benefit does that serve the evaluators for his position?
