Very weird a 3 year starter leaves.
Was he a 3 year starter by default though? He was pretty bad and Wisconsin was not winning anything with him as the QB.
How dare you say that about 2018's B1G QB of the Year Alex Hornibrook!
This is the key-by default. He read the writing on the wall w/ Mertz coming in, and last year's team performance.
I seriously doubt that Mertz would have beaten out Hornibrook - or even that Hornibrook thinks that. Hornibrook is not what we would want at OSU, ideally, but he is a decent college QB and a starter with 3 years under his belt.
There is another reason. Maybe there is some crootin going on behind the scenes with the apparently loosened transfer restrictions. Has the portal struck again?!?!
It wouldn't be difficult to beat out Hornibrook-I think he realized he was in over his head and decided to spare himself the drama. Coop had an old saying about young football players-"If a dog is gonna bite, he's gonna bite as a pup". QB is no exception to this rule-a frosh QB might need some polishing, but it is obvious very quickly if he has what it takes to get the job done.
I agree and so does local Madison sports media. They refer to Mertz as a program changer. And let's just say no one has been enamored with Hornibrook.
Well maybe I’m wrong - I don’t really follow Wisky football. I remember hear that Hornibrook was pretty impressive as a freshman up there, and they were excited to see him develop. Obviously, he has struggled against teams like OSU (and those are the only games I’ve watched), but the Buckeye defense - and especially the DL - has usually been pretty good against the pass in the last several years. I know last year happened, yes, but we didn’t play the Badgers.
I didn’t know the kid’s star had fallen so rapidly. I didn’t think much of it when OSU destroyed him, because that’s what our pass rush does. But I remember hearing about the team up there being excited about him... I hope he doesn’t suffer too much from the multiple concussions he has sustained. I hate to hear about that, but if this is one of the reasons he is leaving his team, I have to salute his priorities and perspective.
Who will PFF anoint as the best B1G QB now that he's gone???
Pick up your feet, turn your corners square! And DRIVE DRIVE DRIVE!!!
So that pretty much opens the door for Shea Patterson to be the top Big Ten QB throughout the spring and summer, correct?
Start clearing space in the trophy case now... there's another September Heisman and another September Silver Football coming to Ann Arbor!
You didn't know? He was already the best QB in the conference last year.
Shea Butter #1.
Justice delayed is justice denied....#FTP
He has elected or was elected out ?.....
Methinks this is quite strange...
Number 1 rule in life: always beat That Team Up North.
So the downfall of Wisky football begins.
All went downhill since Bert left.
Man, I miss making fun of him. He blocked me on Twitter once and that achievement is going on my tombstone.
This is great. Lol.
I think they just improved significantly. Mertz is FAR more talented. He could be a nuisance in a couple of years.
Not even close. Losing Hornibrook is addition by subtraction for them. He was absolutely awful last season and Mertz has far more upside (my guess is he'll be the most talented QB they've had since Russell Wilson). Chryst was also stubbornly committed to Hornibrook as the starter. This decision makes it easier for him to usher in the Graham Mertz era now. There is a real good chance had Hornibrook returned to the team Mertz might've redshirted next season.
If the Mertz kid enrolled early and is lighting it up Alex likely saw the writing on the wall. Even if Mertz isnt even in school the writing is still on the wall.
"I find your lack of kalua disturbing" - Darth Lebowski
Even if there is no wall yet...the writing is on the wall.
Hasn't Hornibrook also had numerous concussion issues (I remember Jack Coan starting in their bowl game last year because Hornibrook apparently was still suffering from concussion-like symptoms)? If his decision was related to Mertz being a threat to take his job he could've just put his name in the transfer portal instead. All we've heard is that he's leaving the program, nothing about transferring. I think he's done with football and is pulling a Jake Locker on them (probably related to his long-term health).
He always had trouble completing things
Look out ..................
The off season bites !!
It's not a rivalry .............. it's a wreckoning.
Seattle Sounders 2019 MLS Champions
Well, I guess that is one way to avoid getting your butt kicked by the bucks this year.
Alex might be a decent guy, but he is not a good qb. He has a terribly weak arm and inaccurate. Kind of like a poor man's Bauserman.
Successful people do what they have to, whether they feel like it or not
"poor man's Bauserman" vicious....
Who would be a rich man's Bauserman?
"You don't win when you're too damned happy, and I like to win"--Woody Hayes
Brett Basanez?? Former Northwestrn QB in early 2000's.
Get dumped then
Somebody with a big arm like Bauserman had but even more wildly inaccurate.
Maybe Wisconsin didn't have his preferred graduate program. /s
Let's Go Bucks
First thought: “Whoa. He’s still there?”
Curious to know if he's leaving the team... or leaving football all-together.
Curiously, Wisky's national championship odds in Vegas improved today.
Patterson is now the clear front runner for the ESU^PN hype machine starting with the trip to South Africa......
Enjoying daily the back to back ttun beatdowns.
This is a positive move for the Wisconsin football team.
He was below average . . . at best.
Candidly, I'm disappointed in this news because we play Wisconsin this year.
Another QB who started as a true freshman and ended his career on a low note. Don't have time to list them all but college football is littered with such QB's in the last 15 years.
AKA the Horseshoe, the Shoe, and the House That Harley Built
Way too early to depend on Mertz. He played well in All-Star game and is definitely talented, but I don't see him as a kid ready to be the guy.
Somebody on his site once described Hornibrook’s throwing style perfectly. He said Alex looks like me trying to throw the ball left handed and I’m not left handed.
Funny as hell and accurate.
Fields of Dreams
I think Parris Campbell can run the 40 quicker than his release.
I bet ttun is taking credit for this...his complete melt down in the big house probably sealed his fate.
Addition by subtraction ?
Odd. Some disarray in the house that Alvarez built perhaps?

Feel bad for Mertz...I mean, the kid will win 3-4 B1G West titles only to get crushed in the B1G title game. Silver lining is they will lull Miami/Louisville to sleep in the Gator Bowl (if thats still a thing) every year.
I wouldn’t be surprised to learn this is concussion related. He’s going to be a senior I think and probably realizes there’s no pro future for him so why take more risk.
Wish him the best.
“I intend to make Georgia howl.” General William Tecumseh Sherman
I think you are correct about related to concussions. I think he had more than a couple last season. Since he has no future in the NFL, why risk serious injury.
My favorite team? Whoever is playing TTUN.
They will definitely go through some growing pains this season
The shitty weather in Madison is probably bearable until a better QB becomes your competition. All of a sudden the south probably looks better.
Nothing is too difficult for the person that doesn't have to do it.
Thanks for the info, TMac.
Both surprising and not so much at the same time. I've felt that AH was ass, my dude, the last two seasons, and going straight backward. At the same time, I thought that UW would stay the course, as always. Hmmm.
So I guess this means OSU's search for a 4th scholarship QB is now over.
I could have sworn he died like 7 years ago.
This is not funny. So why did I laugh out loud?
If you saw the Michigan--Wisconsin game last year, he was pathetic. Then the injuries set in. But, to be fair to him, he played a decent game against us in the Big Ten Championship game 2 years ago.
I just don't get what goes through coaches minds at times. Chryst is a very good and smart coach but he either didn't recognize or care that Alex was his team's biggest weakness. He was slow (to react, run or throw) with a slow release of funky mostly inaccurate footballs which allowed teams to gang up on his RBs without much consequences. They will now be a bigger threat as Mertz progresses with experience.
We could use someone to challenge for the #3 QB here. Just sayin.
No one needs a QB more than Willie Taggart. You know he's got to be burning up the phone lines.
"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." - Edmund Burke
Not much to do beng a QB at Wisky; Handoff left, toss right, hit the Te and hope Abaderes type WR makesa play.
You win with people.
Don't forget that damned jet sweep.
Folks in Madison have been confident that Mertz would unseat any QB on the roster on day one. Hornibrook was a bit of "starter by default"...the only other recruit they've had who gave them any hope was Bart Houston (2012-16) but Houston was a bit of a headcase and was never able to grasp the playbook. He had the physical tools, just couldn't put it together in practice or on Saturdays.
I could see Chryst having Coan and Mertz split reps in the first couple games, and if Coan shows big improvement from last year then maybe Mertz takes a redshirt by appearing in fewer than 5 games. They return the RB (Taylor), Emperor Barry's Grandson (TE Ferguson) and several top receivers, so there's some experience to wrap around whichever green QB wins that battle. I'd imagine that Chryst sticks with one starter once they get to game 3 (TTUN).
I for one would love to have had talent and athleticism to have been a three year starter for any college football program. I wish Hornibrook well on whatever life path he chooses.
Too much time spent at the North Heidelberg rather than the classroom. SSD 68-72
Michigan State fans be like, 'what's up Lewerke?'
Except unlike Wisconsin, MSU doesn't have anyone behind Lewerke.
Same situation in Madison that Columbus went through a month ago with Tate.
Remove yourself from a competition that is not easly winable, great display of character.
I read that headline and remain shocked. As someone else pointed out - a 3-year starter heading out the door. That is quite rare.

This is not related in any way, but what a funny picture of Bert.
Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.
I am disappointed in all the comments depicting Alex as a quitter or afraid of competition.
I think he would transfer if that was the case. It appears to me that he is LEAVING football due to health issues, likely too many concussions.
