Hindsight is, and in, 2020
At least he didn't say "if anyone was offended, I apologize" as if an apology to anyone who wasn't offended wasn't needed.
Barney Fife lives, and he lives among us.
I was thinking the same thing. I also liked how he didn't blame it on the heat of the moment, or any other excuse normally used to try to explain it away. Shouldn't have happened in the first place though. It seems like more and more folks are becoming gutter-mouths lately.
A little knowledge is a dangerous thing
I substitute teach in the public schools. For some, this type of language is just typical "every day" conversation. They don't even have to be upset to say it. It is part of their outside "playground vernacular." Very difficult at times for that NOT to seep into our adult minds and hearts. That is why Ephesians 4:29 is important: "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen."
I have played, coached, viewed as a fan, and officiated during athletics. I can tell you, even officials are not perfect. It is a good thing we as fans are not fined for the language we use in the stands during games.
After witnessing the LACK OF OFFICIATING during the Saints' NFL playoff game, it appears at times, agreeing with McCaffery's comment, that cheating does take place. However, Matthew 12:36 states: "But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken."
I appreciate Fran taking responsibility for his comments.

I would add Romans 12:2 "Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
Thank you for adding those passages. It puts into context how we should be acting. Especially, since my wife recently remanded me for my unwholesome speech while driving!
Send the Earth Reverberating
At my son's HS Lacrosse practice last night, one of the seniors yelled at and swore right in the face of a younger player that was a bit slower and/or not fully committed to the drill. Coach stopped practice and had the Varsity squad run 8 laps!
Good for coach!
He has done it before and he will do it again. Not much of an example for a coach. Makes you appreciate the OSU coaches much more.
He has a well documented history with his rage. He has been warned and disciplined previously. I was under the impression that he was out of strikes, but this looks like another length of rope being fed out.
Bobby Knight the second.
I can’t look at him without seeing Ed Helms from Hangover.

"We gotta go win this next game and make the State of Ohio proud!"-UFM
The High School basketball coach where I taught used that type of language during practice all the time. But, it was overlooked because he had successful teams.
I used to live next to the parents of a former OSU football player, Vic Stottlemeyer. I heard stories about Woody Hayes' kicking his players during practice. It appears we looked upon Woody in awe. Was he any different than McCaffery?
The players were in pads or helmets. Woody hardly "kicked their ass'-he did strike them in a fashion, on occasion. The players almost took an amused attitude towards Woody-get him riled up and watch him explode, it's funny! FWIW, Woody was not known for running particularly "brutal" practices, even by the standards of 1960s football and was acknowledged as the first big time coach to openly embrace proper hydration during practice.
While Woody was coaching, face guards were not called face guards at Ohio State. They were Woody grabbers.
"The most important statistic, is the number of wins in a season".........Woody Hayes
You just hate to see that.
Now we know where his son gets it from ...
or from his mom.
Literally... she was kicked out of a game too..
Festivus at the McCafferys must be intense.
Yeah didn't the whole thing start when his son argued a foul call and got T'd up? Fran got himself T'd up later...Holtmann did it earlier...rough night for the refs when you have to call 3 technical fouls in the game, and they're all a result of arguing with you. Still, no excuse to go hunt them down after the game and lay into them like that.

The down vote is a mighty tool. Use it on idiots, not differing opinions.
Immediately accepted responsibility? I missed that part of last nights post game (because he didn’t). Not just has he been suspended twice but Iowa’s radio announcer was also suspended for the remainder of the season for comparing Fernando (Maryland) to King Kong. After the radio announcers suspension you knew Fran was going to be sitting a couple games.
emotionally exhausted and morally bankrupt
Radio announcer should have just call Fernando a beast.
That is still sub-human and I am still offended.
I’d be okay with someone calling me King Kong. I’d feel tougher than I really am
The Maryland player is strong, powerful...a 'beast' on the block.
Can you can imagine in the days of Shaq, someone not using hyperbole like 'Wow...Shaq is a beast!'?
Oh, the crazy* times we are living in.
*Sorry if I offended anyone suffering with a mental health challenge.
No one was suspended for using the term beast though
Dumbass deserved it.
"I find your lack of kalua disturbing" - Darth Lebowski
Even during his Sienna days, always thought that guy had an air of assholeness about him. Thanks for confirmation, Francis.
Didn't we lose to Fran and Sienna awhile ago in the tournament? I remember him coaching back then and thought at the time, what a punchable face.
Edit: I answered my own question.
4:20 & 44:18 (my memory stands correct: definately punchable)
Yeah, and I am pretty sure that win got him the Iowa job.
Amongst the worst performances out of an Ohio State team in an NCAA tournament game ever, a truly god awful basketball game that we had no business losing.
That loss was 10 years ago, March 20, 2009. Shocking. Buckeyes ball movement against the 3/4 court press was horrible. Didn't go over the top, didn't attack. Didn't work the ball inside. Ran the clock down numerous times and settled for some bad shots.
p.s. Love the Sonic commercial at the 20:00 minute mark.
I'd rather be a minute early than an hour early, 'cause I like to procrastinate.
lol +1 for use of assholeness
IT. WAS. A. FUMBLE.
Meh. The suspension was well earned but I don’t have it in me to get too excited about the coach yelling expletives at a referee.
My take on all this as well. He deserved the 2 games for taking it off court, but I'm not going to act like he is an all time cretin-coaches get fired up, it happens.
I think the fact that it happened well after the game was over and not in the heat of the moment that made it worse
To be fair, I don't mind coaches letting officials know that they suck, like when Holtmann got T'd up after calling out the refs for two absolute BS calls back to back. There is taking it too far...running them down in the tunnel and calling them "cheating motherfuckers" and "fucking disgraces" after the game probably crossed a line or two.
I am glad Holtman got a technical. It is about time we and the players saw him step in it. I think 2 games is a bit much for acting like a douche bag, especially after what we have seen from B1G refs this season. I think it will pay off for Iowa in the long run. 1 game would have been enough.
You never lose to those pricks. Ever. Ever. Urban Frank Meyer
That is his second one speaking up on behalf of Wesson and then he went to the conference after the first one so he may appear more mild mannered than we want to see but I don't think he has been silent.
And it is certainly justified for a coach who is a repeat offender. Heck, his wife got ejected from an arena in 2006 after he got T'd up. When they keep it on the court or playing field that is fine but when they chase down the officials after the game down tunnels or elsewhere, not ok. Then it becomes the fear of an actual physical altercation and harm coming to someone. When they are that angry do not bet on them having enough restraint from going too far.
Good for Iowa... they were aware of conduct that didn't reflect the University and they acted swiftly..
Iowa... they were aware of conduct that didn't reflect the University and they acted swiftly..
Still, one wonders if Iowa would have done anything if the sportswriter hadn't tweeted it, making it public. Surely this wasn't the first time Fran McCaffery's behavior was embarrassing. Which may have contributed to DJ Carton not signing with Iowa.
Perhaps they considered a one-game suspension would make it appear the university was not taking it seriously. So, two games, but is he OK to be there for practice?
Our honor defend, so we'll fight to the end !
I’d assume the Ref he was screaming at or other refs would have let the big ten know if the sportswriter hadn’t. Would have been tough for Iowa to hide that one
If the ref reported it to the B1G, it would not be public unless the B1G chose to make it so.
With out the media no way he gets suspended. Just like it took a video for the NFL to suspend Ray Rice. Also did Iowa suspend him or did the Big 10? The article implies both???
Iowa suspended him and the B1G fined the school for sportsmanship violation.
Let's this be a lesson to you kids, that's what happens when you use pro-fran-ity
Leave one wolf alive....and the sheep are never safe
I see what you did there.
TG Proud Buckeye alumnus.
That was rookie status compared to Bob Knight....
Hope they lose both games. Fran deserves that.
I know there's a game Saturday, and my ass will be there.
I Believe In Ohio State.
I swear he’s going to morph into a horror movie demon.
He's not already? That is one strange looking human.
Good for Iowa for acting quickly to do the right thing.
"You cheating motherfucker! You're a fucking disgrace!"
I wonder how many games a player would be suspended for for those phrases directed at an official.
No one has gone back into the Bo Ryan Archives.. to tell Fran "..Deal with it.."...
Bad words, GTFOH. Sports used to be for the tough. The next generation of coaches are going to have to behave like Mr Rodgers
The ugly truth is often downvoted
Hey I’m all for it on the court to a certain point. But once you leave the court and go after an official in the halls, then someone needs to step in.
The Refs should be held accountable. If the league won't do it this kind of stuff will only happen more frequently.
If coaches are upset about the refs, maybe they should settle things with Monday Night Rehabilitation.
It's likely not the foul language that got him suspended, but rather the accusation that the officials were cheating.
Furthermore, since when has chasing down a ref after the game you lost by 20 to yell at him been a tough-guy move?
McCaffery should have been more concerned with how poorly his team ended the half and how poorly they competed down the stretch. Going after a referee, under any circumstances, to call a referee a cheater and a disgrace is way out of bounds. His suspension should have been much longer in my opinion.
I've never been a fan of McCaffery and am grateful we have Coach Holtmann. Go Bucks!
^This. When you lose by 20 points, point the finger at yourself. Don't go chasing after the refs after the game is over.
"We get paid to score touchdowns, not kick field goals"
-- Urban Meyer
CowCat. Thanks for the response. In my opinion, it's a punk move to get your ass handed to you and whine. I've never been a fan of McCaffery for this very reason. Go Bucks!
I love the header pic on this article. Not exactly sure what Fran is trying to do...
He's not sure either.
we sat behind the Iowa bench 3 years ago and the entire game was profanity laced by "Mr. Pottymouth". Why do they continue to allow this type of behavior in a family setting?
Not sure I would classify any sporting event, including high school games, as being a family setting although there seems to be a lot of families now where the profanity is just a part of normal dinner conversation.
Its not a family setting, and they dont allow it as he waa suspended
Hothead coach, hothead son. Volatile combination. He was and still is a loudmouthed asshole, now he just gets to sit at home for 2 games and think about it. Won't change a damn thing.
Won't change a damn thing.
Short term, it may not.
But additional behavior like this sets up Iowa to further discipline the coach until he either changes his behavior or the university has grounds to terminate him and not pay him millions afterward.
Makes me laugh..played with that combo in b-ball. Dad was banned from city league HS baseball for breaking the jaw of an ump when his boy was pitching. Playing in empty gyms was a treat...from the opening whistle non stop profanity laced tirades. Moms, girlfriends all got an earful.
Justice delayed is justice denied....#FTP
No need for an apology in my opinion. You could read our coaches lips saying to the ref that it was two bulshit calls. Everyone so offended these days. Those officials know what they're signing up for.
I don't care about apologies and crap like that, but telling a ref that there were 2 bullshit calls is much different than seeking one out after the game and telling him he is a cheating motherfucker. One is a commentary about a situation, the other is a personal attack, weak and empty as it might be, it is still a different thing entirely.
He deserved it for his abhorrent behavior during and after the game. It's ironic how when your winning the refs are the the best in the world and when things are going bad it's the refs fault and not yours as a coach. My guess is this suspension came with a warning of if he embarrasses himself, the team and the university further he'll be let go.
He earned it, no doubt, but I hope those refs were privately reprimanded. They were bad. The only good thing is they were bad against both teams. It seems like basketball is where all the diva officials with thin skin go.
The only good thing about The Game is winning it - Urban Meyer
He didn’t apologize to the ref he attacked. Not much of a man.
He didn't "attack" the ref. He yelled at him.
I agree he deserves the suspension but if you watched the officiating in that game, I'm not sure I blame him for not directly apologizing.
Let's be honest...the officiating was pretty atrocious.
If he had any class, he would have apologized to his hosts, too.
I have no idea how this guy gets recruits or their families to commit to Iowa? It's been incident after incident with him and from what I've been told his tantrums and inexcusable behaviors date back to his days at UNC-Greensboro. I don't think 2 games is nearly enough for that behavior, I think he should sit until the end of the regular season to include the Big Ten Tournament. To run after an official like a lunatic and call him a cheating mother fucker? Are you serious? This guy is clearly unstable. Remember this is the same guy that responded to a legitimate question about Adam Woodbury's legitimate MULTIPLE attempts to poke opposing players in their eyes on the court with, "ask an intelligent question." Woodbury was one of the dirtiest players I've ever seen. At what point does Iowa's AD say "enough is enough?" Can't stand him or Iowa basketball, made last nights thrashing so much sweeter.
In the past I have both criticized and celebrated the 11W Graphics Dept for headline photo choices (Pat Fitz is my fave). This one is really great. Kudos, gang. That's just plain fun to view.
Yes, this is one, thumbs up definitely
"A lot of dead people wish they were out here right now."
A solid #2 to this gem. Behold:
I don't see it--where'd it go? Now I gotta know what/who it is
Try this. It's safe, from11W archives, to the best of my knowledge. I, in no way, represent 11W or their contents.
Fitz fizzing, haha
I got it to show by shortening the address to
My man. Cracks me up. Poor Fitz. I actually like him, but that's just plain funny.
"I said what I said back in the tunnel directly," McCaffery said Wednesday. "I didn't want it to be public I didn't say it on the floor, in front of thousands of people. I said it directly to him and somebody ended up hearing it. Okay, that's unfortunate, but that's the reality of the situation."
He's a PHILOSOPHER!
"If a tree falls in a forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?"
So he absolutely wanted to seek the ref out and tell him off. He's just upset someone else over heard it. That's "unfortunate"... hmm doesn't sound very "regretful" to me. Fran is just a piece of shit, and also not a very good coach.
I'm not defending him. I despise the guy as I have said in this or one of the other threads about this situation. However, there is nowhere in the arena in the area this happened where this would be private. Besides the multiple security folks, arena workers and fans in that bar area near their tunnel you also have the media work room in the same hallway as their locker room. Just saying
That’s not the point. Post game conversations can happen in many ways where you can make your point and not do it in such an awful fashion.
You are absolutely correct. Which means Fran was out of control, which frankly is the normal "Francon" situation. He really doesn't care who sees or hears him rant and rave. His "regret" with this one was that he got publicly scolded for it. And it's not even his regret, it's Iowa's PR/SID team on his behalf.
A C.S. Lewis quote comes to mind: "Integrity is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching."
He admitted he made a mistake.
Let's forgive this time and if there is a next time we bust his balls!!!!!!!!!1
Let's forgive this time and if there is a next time . . .
Forgiving is important for everyone . . .
. . . but what if this is the "next time"?
Incidents like this are the reason it is hard to get people to get into officiating in the first place. Coaches at all levels berate officials, and it gets worse the higher the level. Many here have said things like “toughen up”, “refs are thin-skinned”, etc., but most officials are just people trying to do their best and keep improving. This abuse and intimidation doesn’t have to be a part of the game, and it is beyond time for administrations at all levels to start taking a harder stance. It isn’t gamesmanship, it is just shitty behavior and it needs to stop.
That said, I have been critical here about officiating I have seen this season, and while I didn’t see this game it doesn’t surprise me to hear that it may have been shitty both ways in this one. This is where the conference has to step in and weed out the bad officials. It is a self-perpetuating problem - bad officials, more abuse, less new entrants, worse officials. The conference can and should control this, as should the administrators. I hope Iowa fires this dumbass at the end of the season - he is an exemplar of the worst end of the spectrum, in my opinion.
Life is full of choices. Make good ones.
Great post. Do your jobs, everyone top to bottom.
If he is serious about taking "full responsibility," he ought to pay the fine, otherwise it is just a meaningless phrase.
I guess I dont get why schools like Iowa tolerate a guy like this.
Sure Woody, Knoght etc may have at times been even worse, but heck they WON.
Coach Fran is sub .500 on his career in conference at Iowa over his nearly 9 years there.
The best this guy can claim is that he isnt as bad as his predecessor
He has been 10-8 or worse in conference 6 of his 8 years, never finished better than T-3rd in conference, and only done that twice in 9 years, has never gotten past the 2nd Round of the NCAA tourney, and assuming he makes it this year it will only be the 4th time in 9 years he even got there and been sub .500 in conference 3 times in 9 years
He is not a terrible coach, but at best slightly better than average, so why tolerate this kind of behavior?
There are all kinds of good young coaches who would love a crack at coaching Iowa. Heck, Dr. Tom Davis won 66% of his games there and 55% in conference, took them to 9 NCAA tourney's in 13 years including getting past the 2nd round 3 times, and finished 3rd or better 5 times in his 13 years and was only sub .500 twice in those 13 years,,,ie you can be fairly successful there
Why not go get someone like Earl Grant out of College of Charleston, who has gone 82-25 his last 3 years there and is a former Greg Marshall (Wichita St HC and former Winthrop HC) asst at Winthrop
Or entice Will Wade from LSU or John Becker from Vermont who has gone 188-83 in his time at Vermont and won 3 conference titles and is in first place this year again having gone 105-21 in conference and on and on
Enough about Coach McCaffery. Let's talk about the basketball folks who should really be held accountable for their actions/OR LACK THERE OF-------Team managers. LOL
Just saw an ESPN article about IUP having to wear Edinboro's old road unis, because the team manager FORGOT to bring them. REALLY? I thought all they had to do, besides handing out water and towels, and placing chairs for the players during time-outs, was: REMEMBER TO BRING THE UNIFORMS.
At least the Crimson Hawks won the game 87-59, clinching their conference west division crown. I wonder what the players chose for that Team Manager to wear home on the 100 plus mile bus ride after the game? LOL
I guess my humor was not accepted, thus the negative 1 HS.
I got it. +1 for you.
Hey team manager? YOU HAD ONE JOB...
Is a suspension for Rutgers and Wisconsin all that severe?
Scott in Tx
Next time Fran has a spot available on the staff he may want to hire this guy
Very poor mentoring. He may have 21 wins, but he is a total loser in my book.
At least he didn't blurt out that God forsaken name, 'King Kong'!
I've read the lips of nearly every coach using bad language towards the referees (Holtmann included), but I think the line was drawn @ personally calling him a "...cheating MF'er!..." Did Fran say anything unsavory in the post game interview? I'm entertained & want more.
