1) what the hell just happened
2) Justin “Diebler” Ahrens is the truth. Why the hell wasnt he getting minutes until this week?
Some players are practice players and
some are game players.
Apparently, Ahrens is the latter.
And some take time for the light bulb to go on. He will have some ugly games. Just have to be patient knowing what he can do. Hopefully his emergence will give Muhammad some time to get his legs back.
I don't buy one goddam drop of gas in the state of Michigan!
Why the hell wasnt he getting minutes until this week?
Our honor defend, so we'll fight to the end !
Ahrens still is a not a complete player. You see inconsistent defensive play and bad defensive decisions, but the guy can shoot. He probably should have played more, but it wasn't baffling why he didn't play more.
Some kids it takes time to get used to the speed of the game, he probably looked lost and overwhelmed to start the season but it has started to slow down for him now
^ best post ever ^
This must be similar to how Iowa fans felt in 2017. I can't recall a more shocking Buckeye basketball result in my recent memory.
I just don't understand it, coach playing favorites and letting this guy rot on the bench. I also was told that Kyle Young's father was the best man at Coach Holtman's sisters wedding so now we know why Young is getting all those minutes....all part of coaches friends and family attitude..
Brb. Have to go update my profile’s favorite college bball player to Justin Ahrens. Go Bux!
Holy crap Ahrens
Ahrens went off and we shut down Bohanon....oh and BINGO!!!!!!
PS...Ahrens needs to start the rest of his career!!!!

Did you post Bingo, or did I just miss it?
No, was having issues with imgur...will get it up asap
Future is very bright for Ohio State. Good freshmen class getting big time experience and an awesome class coming in.
Stay golden, Ponyboy.
Agreed. This team needs to get to the tournament to give these young guys some experience on the biggest stage. Set them up for a big run next season.
Is that you, Diebler?

After Ahrens had already made five threes keyshon ignores the wide open hot shooter to take a wild one handed floater, but we overcame!
Woods felt like he was feelin’ it at the moment
White Jesus was in the zone tonight.
Holy shit Ahrens. Raining 3s and he was nine of freaking nine from the free throw line - my goodness that was beautiful.
One of the things I’m most excited about next year is we’ll (hopefully) be good enough to not have Bardo calling all our games.
Stay Classy Fran
Uh, wow. Iowa coach Fran McCaffrey was just screaming at an official walking down a hallway of Value City Arena. "You cheating motherfucker! You're a fucking disgrace!"
— Kyle Rowland (@KyleRowland) February 27, 2019
Lol. Our tenth leading scorer had 29 points and we won by 20. But yea it was definitely the officials’ fault.
So Fran, did the ref have a 15-pt. reverse teaser he needed to cover? That level of fixing would be really hard to hide, just such a ridiculous and childish claim.
Iowa AD should fire this clown, his act is getting very old. How can a guy this irrational and out of control be making millions of dollars per year?
Fran Mccaffrey is a piece of shit.
So is Brent McMurphy.
His whole family is a joke. What I've learned:
It's not the first time issues with officials have been a family affair for the McCafferys. In February 2006, Fran McCaffery, then the coach at Siena, was ejected from a game for what he said was the first time in his career. His wife, Margaret, was then ejected later in the game after a tirade at officials.
Less than a minute after his son was T'd up, Fran McCaffery was also called for a technical. It came after Iowa's Nicholas Baer made a layup, and the Hawkeyes cut the lead to 82-69. McCaffery was called as he appeared to step on the court to talk to an official.
After the game, according to the Toledo Blade and Columbus Dispatch, Fran McCaffery screamed, "You cheating m-----f-----! You're a f---ing disgrace!" at official Steve McJunkins as he pursued him down a hallway in the arena.
Did you say the wife of the coach got ejected from the game? Wow, Do you know which opponent Siena played back in February 2006. I'm just curious.
Fran, you just had a freshman who was riding the pine all year drop 29 on your head. Get wrekt, my good bitch.
This is definitely where I parked my car.
Another Class act
Here we come dabo !!
It's not a rivalry .............. it's a wreckoning.

The jerkstore called they're about out of Fran
Here he is in the shape of a T, which is appropriate
The apple doesn't fall far from the tree either, such a rotten culture that permeates his program. And now begins Iowa's annual end of the year collapse. I expect for them to be on the bubble by the end of it.
That should cost him with the conference.
I wouldn't be surprised if that were true. He has been a loud mouth embarrassment since he got to Iowa. Kind of the opposite of their football coach, but very much like their football coach he wins just enough to not get fired. Welcome to Iowa, the land of permanent mediocrity!
Welcome to Iowa, the land of permanent mediocrity!
ha, so true!
That's great language when meeting a recruit's family /s.
It isn't like the Bobby Knight days. You can't get away with that now. I'm surprised McCaffrey wasn't ejected.
Fran McCaffery has been a jackass since his days at Siena. Never once has one of his players committed a foul, well according to Fran. I can appreciate any coaches intensity, but this guy is a dick, through and through. Any coach who refuses to acknowledge when his dirty player REPEATINGLY attempts to poke opposing players in their eyes on the court is a piece of crap in my book. Not sure why Iowa retains him. Happy to see him get T'd up and I hope he is fined for that behavior after the game.
Arhens scores 29 and just a week ago was riding pine WTF???
Brendon White sent Holtmann a "Whats up with Arhens?" Text before the game!
Guy buried on bench leads Buckeyes to victory....
Ahrens you glad he got some playing time today?
Ahrens went full NBA Jams tonight.
4 AM in the hinterlans of the holyland no stream on laptop listening Paul Keels on tunein.com totally biblical!
You are one committed Buckeye
Aww man you know strange days my father passed away. Last night. Second loss this year. Happens as we get older. Loss. Could not sleep. So upside down. Had to get up listen to some basketball. Go Bucks!
My sympathies are with you and your family. Shalom.
Our people are everywhere, Esto Dignus.
So sorry to hear that news BC - this win is for him
I am so sorry for your loss. Prayers and strength to you and your family.
Damn, sorry man. Glad the Basketbucks brought some joy.
Sorry for your loss BC
Sorry to hear that Blackcoffee.

Sorry to hear about this loss BC. Loss is inevitable, but that doesn’t make it easier. Take care.
Read my entire screen name....
Sorry to hear. Can’t imagine.
So sorry to hear that, BC.
I play, coach stays. He goes, I go.
Sorry about your loss, BC. Take it easy on yourself.
I am terribly sorry for your loss. Hopes and prayers for your family.
Ahrens wasn’t ready in the beginning of the year, but he’s finally been engaged enough on the defensive end for Holtmann to give him free reign on the offensive end.
Him and Washington need to be in the top tier of scorers for the rest of the season.
Exactly right. Holtmann has done a wonderful job with Ahrens and Washington. Bringing them along slowly and now it is showing

Credit where due. Building for the future.
Yes to the staff, but I have no problem giving the head man credit. He will catch the hell if things don’t go well
Coach Holtmann is earning his salary. Are there other hidden gems on the pine we haven't seen yet?
Justin Ahrens.... enough said..

Attitude. And coaching the attitude.
Sorry for your loss man. We're all here for you if you need anything.
My condolences to you and your family, BC.
Thankyou. Hugging my kids.
Now that’s my kind of BUCKEYES
Finally this team had a fun to watch game for the first time since probably December. This makes some of the earlier losses more frustrating but maybe they needed to have their backs against the wall to get it done? Hopefully Muhammed can break out of his slump, but Washington had a good first half and obviously Ahrens just went nuts. Lots of good freshmen on this team, and if 2 of them can have solid games the rest of the way we might be able to get wins in the last 2 games where we will also be favored (@NW and vs Wisky).
I think once osu can get out of the big ten wars they will be much better and resemble the non conference team they were.
BIG ten is just so tough
Rough ass conference. Iowa is just a solid ass team
Justin Ahrens “came out of nowhere to lead the pack at Augusta.” Err, I mean paced the Buckeyes with 29 points, 3 reb , 2 assists vs 2 TO’s. D Washington Jr added 10 points & 3 rebounds. Luther Muhammad played solid defense.
The freshmen are growing up! Go Buckeyes !
Now I think OSU can win 19 games this season.
Loved Holtmann’s technical. Officiating changed in the second half.
....maybe our shooting did too...
One of the best game I have seen K. Wesson play.
No fouls in the second half. The best ability is availability and he’s much better when he’s on the floor.
The best ability is availability
Yep, Kaleb had the best plus/minus on the team (plus 31) coming into this game. Have to imagine that is up to about plus 50 right now. Yet so many think we are better off with him on the bench.
yeah, where are those hoops geniuses?
When you have a guy that can score like that, all the other players are going to get much easier looks. And Wesson should be able to own the inside without guys collapsing on him.
Now, if Wesson could just finish on the rim....
Peaking at the right time!
How many times in history have both a father and son been T'ed in same game.... Anyone?
Well... at least once that I'm sure of!
Haters gonna say it was a mirage!
That was fun! This was the Justin Ahrens game! Really impressive! We need to build on this performance! This win was huge for our tournament resume.
They said in the post game that one win in the final three would basically make us a lock. We might sneak in at the moment but I would prefer some breathing room.
I don’t think we are a lock yet. We need to win 2 of our last 3 and win a game in the B1G Tourney. Of course if we win at Purdue on Saturday we are a lock.
1 of our last 3 and 1 in the Big 10 tourney gives this team a decent shot to get in. 2 of their last 3 (considering at least one would be against Purdue or Wisky) and a win in the Big 10 tourney would probably lock the Bucks into a 7 or 8 seed. The bubble is especially weak this year and the Buckeyes have held a pretty good NET ranking despite all the losses in Jan and Feb.
Is it an upset? I guess with the ranking it was, but Bucks were favored. Great win any way you draw it up.
Ahrens bout to become a legend.
Feed the trolls
Nope, not an upset, OSU was favored.
OSU being favored by bookies was surprising.
But to sportswriters and fans, any time an unranked team beats a ranked one, that's an upset.
Agree, but I bet with Vegas, not my heart.
Vegas, if you are so inclined, will take your heart as payment
I was a little surprised, but they were 1 spot ahead of us in the B1G standings, and rankings are totally meaningless, especially when you are something like 22. The term "upset" means something specific, it means the money line underdog won. That wasn't the case tonight. Personally I don't even use the word unless the money line is 10 or more.
if I give you my line, would you send me your money you don’t want?
He could prob beat your lines, what is your vig?
It’s amazing what can happen when the shots start falling.
Nice to see someone who legitimately puts the opponents D on high alert. Ahrens ability will open up opportunities for others.
AKA the Horseshoe, the Shoe, and the House That Harley Built
Fifty-four points in one half.
Who saw that coming?
Ahrens couldn’t miss in the second half when it mattered most
Looks like the basketball Buckeyes just found their Brendon White in Justin Ahrens!
Great great win! And those uni’s. So crisp. Please where those more often.
Please where those
Oh no lol.
"We gotta go win this next game and make the State of Ohio proud!"-UFM
They should never wear White at home again. Either wear the Greys or the Scarlet.
agree, the grays are awesome. White with red lettering is IU or WI, not OSU!
Ahrens has about 10 “you know’s” a minute in his interviews. He makes me feel like I know a lot.
team player and credit-giver til the end, he is
Of all the games for me to miss (my daughter had volleyball), apparently it was an awesome one! Might have to find a replay. Glad the buckeyes are clicking. And I guess Ahrens is amazing.
Set your DVR to BTN at 1:30 am. (2.5 hours from right now is the replay)
Ahrens...nearly doubles his season scoring total...in a half. Great Coaching!
But where was Ahrens in November 2017 when Coach Meyer needed him?
An absolutely amazing offensive showing by these young Bucks and especially Justin! If they can keep that shooting touch going they will surprise more teams down hte stretch and in the B10 tournament. Was to go Buckeyes!
If they can keep that shooting touch going they will surprise more teams down the stretch and in the B10 tournament
I'm totally OK with this: if the shots that were in and out all season now fall regularly (law of averages?) the rest of the way.
Question for the recruiting / real Buckeye hoops junkies... was Justin known for being a big time 3-point shooter coming into the program? Just now getting his first meaningful minutes in late Feb? Basically, trying to figure out if this was a fluke hot hand game or if we should expect to see many more nights like this from Justin over the course of the next few years... hoping for more! Getting hot at the right time of year....
He was definitely known as a shooter, but I’ve seen videos of him throwing down windmill dunks. He’s more athletic than Diebler, but he has a ways to go to develop the consistency Jon had from the outside.
Justin reminds me a lot of Grayson Allen with regards to his playing style; he’s an athletic guard who can shoot lights out at times. It’s just all about progressing him for the next few years into a more complete player. He’s still pretty raw, but the flashes of potential have been great these past two games.
Good stuff... thanks Coop!
Diebler took basically til his Senior year to become the legend that he is now.
And now I'm reminded of Wisconsin that year, with Bo telling Jared Sullinger to "Deal with it" after complaining of being spit on by fans after the game in Madison. We then, collectively, told Bo to deal with it when we lit up the scoreboard at home later in the season. That was such a satisfying game. Sadly, Diebler was the only player to miss a three for the Buckeyes that game. I could be wrong but I think that game still holds the record for consecutive three point shots made, and also for three point percentage with over 10 attempts in a game.
Your signature will be publicly displayed at the end of your comments.
Obviously not as prolific as Jon Diebler, but did play at a small town Ohio high school (Division III) and scored a lot of points, quite a few from 3 pt land. A lot of fans questioning why he hasn't played more, but you wonder if it was a bigger adjustment for him getting used to the speed and physicality of college ball. Diebler struggled with that his Freshman year but Matta basically had to play Diebs right away because the Buckeyes had 2-3 seniors graduate and had 3 one and dones (including SG Daquean Cook).
As for Ahrens, he was only a 3 star recruit but he had a pretty impressive offer list (better than most 3 star recruits): OSU, UM, Purdue, Xavier, Iowa State, Va Tech, etc. He arguably had the best offer list out of our 4 Freshmen with Duane probably 2nd (UM, UCLA, Oregon, Iowa State, etc.). Kinda weird because Ledee and Muhammad were 4 star recruits, Ahrens and Washington were 3 star.
I also find it odd that Luther Muhammed was a 4 star recruit. I don't see it. He plays great defense most of the time, but he makes a ton of mistakes. Yes he is a Freshman and I believe he is in a slump. I like having him on our team because of his presence on the court. He has an unusual shot release and it appears he releases the ball after the peak of his jump, kind of like Brandon Fuss Cheatham. I believe that will lead to inconsistency throughout his career. From what I have read he was not highly recruited by a lot of programs. He has shown he's got some serious game at times, like his game At Nebraska, but he's one of those guys that can really hurt a team if he isn't playing well. Yet he was a 4 star recruit, it's kind of interesting.
Luther Muhammed was a solid recruit for Ohio State. He played at Hudson Catholic. They played some of the best high school teams in New York City, New Jersey and the nation. He was the third best player the kid was on the same team as two five star players Jahvon Quinerly, went to Arizona but was declared ineligible he took a 15,000 bribe, Isiah King another high four star kid who committed to Oregon. It's like being on the same team as Trey Burke and Jared sullinger at Northland. Muhammed is a young kid, he makes mistakes but he will be a very good player in years to come. Holtmann was aware of his offensive deficiencies. He needs instruction on getting better with his shot. Muhammad's shot is mid range shot in-between the foul line and the three point line. Muhammed reminds me of Brian Brown and Stephen Bardo back on this days with that great 89 Flying Illini team.
One thing is for sure, he'll never have a more efficient game, but I'd imagine on occasion he'll get in the twenties, the question is, when the team gets more talented, will he get the volume of shots? If he becomes someone a team has to actually defend, he won't have such open looks again, Iowa defended him like he wasn't on the floor, some of his shots there wasn't a man within 6 feet of him.
I heard after the game his brother's career high is 15, but he has played on a more talented team and was out injured a year. But still, hey bro, what's your high again? He does have a sweet stroke, especially the efficiency of the trajectory-it's rather flat, which takes the least effort and can remain the most consistent, assuming he can maintain the same stroke over his career.
Hopefully H. picked the best formally committed bb player for osu, anyone know how the UA kid is doing at ND?
OHIO STATE (18-10) 36 54 90
IOWA (21-7) 36 34 70
Small correction, it should read Iowa with 33 in the first half and 37 in the second.
You are correct. Good catch
1 2 T
IOWA 33 37 70
OSU 36 54 90
First and goal at the five and Arch is getting the ball.
I will give credit, Kaleb played probably his most complete game tonight. Justin Ahrens is a baller. Him and Washington, along with Carton, Gaffney, and Liddel next year on the floor at the same time would be death to another team
Successful people do what they have to, whether they feel like it or not
Kudos to the Holtmann for protecting Kaleb and getting that Tech. Refs didn't eff with Kaleb the rest of the game, after two BS calls in the 1st half.
Yep. It cost the team in the short term, but paid off the rest of the way.
I survived Cooper, and I hate Tai Streets.
Both calls on Kaleb were borderline ridiculous. The clear out that was anything but and then the moving pick. Were the made by the same ref? I presume that is why CH went nuts.
The moving pick was a 10 out of 10 on what they are emphasizing this year. Can't blame h. for protecting his man though, it's very obvious how valuable he is to the team. He, king kong, and happ are the best passing bigs in the big. He'll be even better next year, on a more talented team.
The adjustments Coach H. made late in the 1st half to deal with Iowa's press and in the 2nd half offensively were master class. That guy forgets more about basketball every day than any of us will ever know. This is what happens when the team and the scheme click. Well done, Buckeyes.
These Wessons played their asses off tonight. Kaleb was great in this game. His passing was superb, played with a high level of energy and physicality, handled the ball extremely well rebounding and dribbling under the double teams. Andre Wesson made a phenomenal block against Isiah Moss. Great performance by the team 38 rebounds, 21 assists and 11 turnovers. CJ Jackson has 6 assists and 1 turnover.
Wow! I mean, you saw a flash from Ahrens, but no one expected this, right? I’ll have to loook for a replay.
And I wanted to make sure I commented so there were plenty of comments on a win. You know, we’re such a shitty fan base.
I'll admit it is a pleasant surprise to see so many comments. But quite a few of the negative commentors have not made an appearance. Props to MacDaddy though for admitting that Kaleb had a good game. We still had over 4 thousand empty seats for a 7pm tip on a game the Buckeyes needed to win for dwindling hopes of an NCAA tourney spot. I am not ready to praise our fan base just set. Optimistically hoping for a near sell out for senior night against Wisky on March 10th, but I am not holding my breath on that.
Q: what are the ohiostatebuckeyes.com tarps doing in the lower bowl? I presume those are empty Student seats? Why not open it up for those in the upper rafters to come down and fill them at the 10 minute mark of the first half? Perhaps it is more complicated than that, but there's got to be an easy way to fill the courtside seating.
Those seats are unavailable. I think capacity was over 19k until they did that, now it is 18,700. When they finally moved students behind the benches, the fans in those seats complained (or maybe they were never available, cannot quite recall).
The students generally stand for the whole game, so anyone sitting down in those seats would have an obstructed. It seems like if you told the fans upfront, 'hey we have a 500 seats, but you have to stand the whole game', you would get people to go. I sure as hell would for those seats.
What a good show. I didn't think they had it in them. Man was I wrong.
Do it again and get some revenge on Purdon't.
It's an easy game when shots go in.
Glorious...fucked their shit up pretty good in the 2nd half, to the point where their coach is cussing out refs in the tunnel lmfao...about time an OSU opponent is the one left butthurt about officiating.
That's a big one. But why stop here? Take that momentum west and get a couple of big road wins. That win is the kind that can spark a nice stretch run.
Class of 2010.
And two of Ahrens 3 pt misses were in then out. He should been 8 of 10 from 3 pt land.
