Harbaugh is getting crazier every year. How do they put up with him up there?

That's a Buckeye touchdown!

HS

Well this simply illustrates to TTUN's fanbase, Coach Harbaugh is willing to change things up.  Previous years they traveled abroad and practiced, this year they travel abroad and do not practice.  He is keeping it fresh, and the fanbase will undoubtedly swoon over this new wrinkle.

From my perspective OSU and UM are culturally different.  OSU's culture seems to value winning above all else.  A coach or player with some questionable ethics or mis-steps (Tressel, Meyer, etc.) is still celebrated if he wins games.  UM's culture wants to win, but is not willing to do so at the cost of violating it's principles.  A successful coach or player who makes some ethical mistakes (Frank Clark, Gary Moellar, etc.) is no longer highly thought of.  UM wishes JH beat OSU more, but so long as he's still winning games and doing so with a perceived clean program they will take it.  I don't think OSU would keep a coach with the same level of performance, but losing to their rival (ala Cooper).  OSU's brand is by and large dominated by it's football program.  UM's football program is still very important to the university, but it hangs it hat on many other aspects and isn't willing to put all it's eggs into one basket so to speak.  This is just the difference between the two schools IMO.

This is complete horse shit. Its easy to say in hindsight people aren't fond of the way Gibbons or Lewan were handled because michigan didn't actually trade ethics for wins. You can say that easily now because they never won much of anything. As mentioned, Jim Harbaugh has a DUI and ghosts at least one recruit per year leaving him up a creek without a paddle on signing day. Michigan had a felon on the roster this past season convicted of sexual assault. The culture of the program has no problem with questionable ethics, they just don't have the wins to make it a relevant issue. Thats why nobody here much cares for your virtue signaling bullshit. Michigan is not a more virtuous program by any definition. Its pure delusion that you think they are.

Didn't the Gibbons team from 2011 team go 11-2 with wins over ND, OSU, and VT in the Orange Bowl?

As mentioned, Jim Harbaugh has a DUI and ghosts at least one recruit per year leaving him up a creek without a paddle on signing day.

I actually wasn't aware JH had a DUI until you pointed it out so thanks for adding some good info to the thread.  In my personal opinion I don't equate that to poor ethics.  While I don't think it's exactly a good idea, I think many of us have driven cars when we wouldn't pass a breathalyzer.  I know I have.  But, I wouldn't put that in the same realm as a sexual assault.

Michigan had a felon on the roster this past season convicted of sexual assault.

Who was that?  I'm assuming the felony and/or conviction happened after their time at UM or else I'd be more aware of it.

Yeah, but both Gibbons and Lewan were defended vigorously when all this transpired.  I still have never seen Lewan condemned by the UM fanbase, and Gibbons only was when the school finally decided to act 4 years later.  Even Frank Clark was given a pass by the team and fans for committing a Home Invasion on campus, it wasn't until he nearly beat his gf to death that UM fans decided condemning was the "moral" thing to do.  Seems you guys are no different than any fanbase in the country when it comes to this stuff.

HS

Yeah, but both Gibbons and Lewan were defended vigorously when all this transpired.  I still have never seen Lewan condemned by the UM fanbase,

A quick Mgoblog search found a few quotes from UM fans when news of Lewan's sentence was made.

I sure wish he would have stepped up and told the truth.  Taylor always talked up the M man thing, but this was not walking the M talk.

Still remember when all our offensive problems in 2013 were due to Lewan causing chemistry issues. Good times...

Embarrassing embarrassed embarrassment

Hitting people is almost always against the law and makes you look bad. All Lewan had to do was laugh at the guy and walk away. Now, he has a criminal record. Not a good look -even in the NFL.

Seems you guys are no different than any fanbase in the country when it comes to this stuff.

I think lumping all UM fans together as being the same is probably not a fair assessment.  I certainly can't agree with every UM fan on everything.  I wouldn't lump you with every OSU fan as I'm sure you have some unique and different points of view on topics.

If you think these trips are all about the students and not a recruiting advantage, I can't help you. The made a huge deal about him rendering assistance to a couple in a snow storm when the facts from the article said it WAS a really bad storm and conditions, He just finished texting congrads to judge Judy on her contract and he was driving. Never mind he put others in danger texting while driving in a snow storm. That's an interesting perspective.  I don't share it, but I would love to hear more.  Personally my impression of JH is that he is acutely aware of the rules and makes no bones about the fact that he follows them to the letter as well as takes advantage of any loopholes that allows him to gain a competitive advantage.  He's the kind of guy that if he's allowed to do something that will help his program under the rules he will do it, but if he's not allowed to he won't tolerate anyone in his program breaking the rules.  Personally I find this very ethical because ethics are at their most basic having your words and actions be congruent versus someone that tells you to your face one thing, then behind closed doors does something different.  You may not agree with JH's choices, but I think he's very transparent about it.

Michigan's culture and values are so different when hiring coaches, do you think they would ever hire a coach with a DUI?

Why do you think UM has underperformed for the last 20 years?  In the last 20 years they've been post-season top 15 11 times.  That's about on par with historical records.  The previous 20 years they were 12 times.  Their only historical lows was Rich Rod's first two years and maybe Hoke's last year.  But, there were plenty of 7 and 8 win seasons in the 90's and 00's.  The last time UM won 10 games in 3 of 4 years was in the 70's and before that you'd have to go all the way back to the early 1900s.  I just think OSU has over performed in the last 15 years relative to their history.

OSU's brand is by and large dominated by it's football program.

I strongly disagree. Ohio State is a national powerhouse right now in football, and that definitely helps the brand when you a.) draw the kind of TV and print ratings we do, and B.) actually win on TV in front of millions rather than pooping the bed in the big games.

However, if we remove ourselves from the context of an online football forum, I think Ohio State is also defined by:

* Its' historical performance in many sports - football, basketball, hockey, tennis, volleyball, synch. swimming, rowing, shooting sports, etc. where there are recent playoff and national championship wins.
* The tradition of a school that has been around a long time. Tradition matters - it's why TBDITL and Script Ohio are so famous.
* The vast alumni network - there are more than half a million living alumni currently worldwide!
* The large size (59,000+ students, one of the largest in the country, and certainly the largest regionally)
* The top-20 endowment ($5+ billion)
* The countless contributions to Medicine, Science and Engineering, and the Arts.
* The rigorous entrance standards - avg. 29 ACT composite in 2017-18

Having made my point, I'll say that if Ohio State's brand was in fact only defined by kicking TTUN's ass up and down the field every year for the past 20 years, I would probably be OK with that too. Go Bucks!

Finally, MaineStrength, the whole post of yours has that stereotypical "holier than thou" attitude that all "Michigan Men" seem to espouse. It's one of the reasons why Michigan in general is so disliked on this board.

This is what arrogant, delusional scUM fans tell themselves. This is the shitty excuses you guys come up with to explain the success of OSU and Bama and Clemson while explaining why scUM just hasn't been at that level.

Once again OSU approaches the game with a 365 days a year approach, getting better in the off season while Harbaugh takes his kids on another field trip across the world.

How would we know? Neither of those guys was particularly successful. And Jim Harbaugh has a DUI. Grant Perry has a felony conviction for sexual assault. Brendon Gibbons raped a girl and the school sat on the accusation for 4 years until his eligibility was almost up. Taylor Lewan told that girl he would rape her again if she went to the police. Don't pretend michigan doesn't have dirty laundry like everyone else. Its just not as big a deal in the media because michigan is no threat to anyone. This whole fake moral superiority is just something michigan fans tell themselves to make themselves feel better. Its pure delusion. Which is the real difference between the two schools. It is a way to talk recruits into going there. Any other thought than that is purely ignorant.

HS

Well said BuckDigger!  The travel trips were simply meant to be a recruiting tool.  This practice accompanied the hiring of high school coaches and parents as well.  If Coach Harbaugh believes so strongly in the expanded educational opportunities these annual trips provide, why didn't he implement them while at Stanford?  You know the school which makes their students attend classes in pursuit of academic degrees unlike Michigan (at least according to Coach Harbaugh).

From my perspective OSU and UM are culturally different.

Agreed.  OSU's culture is superior.

OSU's culture seems to value winning above all else.

Yet, TSUN has the largest stadium in college football, the most wal*mart fans, and tried and failed to coverup the largest pay-for-play scandal in NCAA history with the Fab Five.  TSUN also won it's last 1/2 NC with an ineligible player who also won the Heisman that year.  If TSUN was not win at all costs it would do the right thing and vacate its 1/2 NC.

A coach or player with some questionable ethics or mis-steps (Tressel, Meyer, etc.) is still celebrated if he wins games

We support our coach for turning a blind eye to discounted tattoos, or stand by a coach who was wrongly convicted by fake news, as TSUN fans stand by a coach with three alcohol related arrests.

UM's culture wants to win, but is not willing to do so at the cost of violating it's principles.

Aside from the Fab Five, TSUN will send kids to Europe and call it a study abroad program which Walmart warmly accept.  UM also has always played questionable character guys -most recently Taylor Lewan (team captain,) Grant Perry, Brenden Gibbons (covered up his sexual assault for 4 years,) and Frank Clark (team captain.)  So what are these principles it wont violate? lol

UM wishes JH beat OSU more, but so long as he's still winning games and doing so with a perceived clean program they will take it.

Maybe perceived only by Walmart Wolverines, but the rest of the country sees his gimmicks and sleepovers, paid trips to Africa, and his dishonesty with recruits for what they are.

I don't think OSU would keep a coach with the same level of performance, but losing to their rival (ala Cooper).

Your statement serves you an answer.  OSU already kept a coach who lost to his rival for the better part of 13 years and he had more character than Harbaugh

OSU's brand is by and large dominated by it's football program.

You should look up Columbus someday and research the economics.  The economy is booming and extremely diverse for the MidWest, so Columbus not only owes much of that to OSU, but it is dependent on the local University. Compare this to Ann Arbor and the Detroit area, and UM sadly does not provide the same ROI to MI that OSU does for OH. Unfortunately, UM grads bail on your poverty-stricken state upon graduation.

UM's football program is still very important to the university, but it hangs it hat on many other aspects and isn't willing to put all it's eggs into one basket so to speak.

That's why your coaching staff is the highest paid in the entire conference.  You'd think they'd appear in the conference champ game once in a while.

This is just the difference between the two schools IMO.

Yes, these are the differences between the two schools, but my points were based on facts, not IMO.

I was actually surprised by the amount of UM fans and reporters who are giving them the crown now that Urban is done coaching. After reading the confidence up there, I have no doubts there are several making reservations to the BIG championship game. I guess they don't realize the coach responsible for those 62 points is the coach now. They just keep creating new reasons year after year that they are the favorites and they act totally shocked when it all comes crashing down again. Since the Rich Rod years they have been the NC through September and most of October before the crash yet the fall for it again and again. One must question the intelligence level up there. I hope we get some big time commitments while they are away so their boards catch fire again.

HS
MaineStrength's picture

As a part of said fan base I would like to go on record as saying I do not believe this.  Is Meyer retiring reason for hope to a return to the norm for OSU?...yes.  Is having a higher ranked 2019 recruiting class for UM a win?...yes.  However, it's still very much a wait and see approach.  UM fans see reason for optimism, however Day already has a great start to his 2020 recruiting class, lured away 2 coaches UM would have preferred not to lose, and still maintains a talent and recruiting advantage that I don't see going away in the current culture of CFB.  So, from my perspective UM fans see reason for hope rather than a switch of positions in the conference's rankings.

I wonder if these trips also serve up as a recruiting pitch for Harbaugh and staff?

That's trips three years running, with the Tribune article stating Kotick will fund these trips as long as Harbaugh wants them.

Honest question...how does the NCAA look at these trips?  I thought the standard for their rules was if a normal student is afforded the same opportunities as the athletes? That's obviously not the case here, as donors aren't sending random students on foreign trips, all expenses paid.

I think Hairball is taking a huge risk ... once he gets into South Africa, they may not let him leave (they may mistake him for a chimp, especially when they see him climbing all those trees) .....

Educational bonus for the players, but not sure it will help them against OSU - this travel formula hasn't done the Puke & Blue much good against legitimate teams, so maybe Hairball might want to change up the agenda and focus on, oh say, football ??

HS
sharks's picture

The only sad thing about this is that other programs (including Ohio State) aren't doing something similar. 90% of those kids will never make a dime playing football, and to have an all expenses paid educational trip to South Africa (or Rome, or wherever else they've been) seems like a phenomenal experience. Go ahead and mock Harbaugh for being a goof, but he's got this trip thing completely right, imo.

Taking your coaching staff to Africa during the May evaluation season is not a good idea. This is when you get eyes-on opportunity and a chance to start/continue building a relationship. No amount of "Look at us!" tweets can overcome that.

Odds on Harbaugh in a cage with great whites? I'll put it at 65%. You can bet on the "All or Nothing" camera crew being there to capture the moment. I'm still hopefully awaiting the announcement of season two.

Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing.

HS

As much I dislike TTUN I think these trips are awesome for Student-Athlete. It gives them an opportunity to learn outside of the classroom in a real world experience.

I enjoy our winning streak against them but how a trip in May translate to winning or losing games in September is beyond me. A lot of time kids go home in May and that is when the off the field issues take place back in the kid hometown.

HS
blu.fan's picture

I love the trips. Italy, France, South Africa, I think this is great. Truly an educational, cultural, team bonding event.

Michigan has gone over this with compliance and the NCAA. Other teams are free to do the same thing . . . the fact that Michigan can afford this doesn't mean that everyone has to be able to afford this, or choose to do this. Boosters and wealthy alumni can pay for all kinds of things. Boosters and bagmen paying for cars, jewelry, fringe benefits, rent, TV's, etc., falls into a wholly different category.

As said above, 90% of the team will never sniff the NFL. The trips are a great experience that will be remembered for a lifetime. If you read over at mgoblog, you will see that a significant portion of fans agree that they should be practicing, working to travel to Indy, etc., etc. I'm one of those who disagree.

Oh, and FTR, I predict Michigan will lose again to OSU. (That's my prediction until Michigan actually and for real wins.) Harbaugh may be idiosyncratic and different, but I think he is right about doing this. I have been out of the country to Asia, Europe, Central and South America, and numerous trips to border countries. totaling almost a year away from the States. These trips were truly educational and life-shaping, and I am so glad I had the opportunity. I'm glad the kids on the team have these wonderful opportunities.

EDIT:  I have seen Cuba on the list. To go to China, Israel, Brazil, Germany, and a host of other places would be incredible. And honestly, I wish more kids and more schools did this.

HS
LCT's picture

Yeah: "afford this"

HS
osu78's picture

Wow. We can agree on something - experiencing other cultures is a great way to broaden one’s horizons. Personally, I’d like to see tOSU do something similar; who knows what impact they may have later? Some players will go on to positions where they can make a big impact beyond the NFL, and such experiences can shape their perspectives and actions in a positive way. I wonder if TTUN takes along a professor who can educate players on the culture, history, etc. for the players on the trip. If I were the coach, I’d require the players to write a paper on what they learned and how it impacted their view of a different culture. Hell, I’d buy them all copies of Mandela’s autobiography and make them read it before the trip. Can’t answer basic questions about it? Turn in your ticket until you can,

On second thought, we also agree on TTUN losing next year. That’s two things. Is hell freezing over?

Yeah, I'm curious about why the negative views on this over at 11W. Is it jealousy and sour grapes? I doh't think so. I mean, obviously, it hasn't helped Michigan beat OSU, and it hasn't helped recruit, so why does it matter?

This is heresy here, but I think there are things more important than football, and more important than winning at football. I mean, of course I want to beat OSU, and win the National Championship. But at what cost? One of the things Harbaugh said which I appreciate is that these are kids. Footbally is hard work at this level, but they should also enjoy life. College should be a learning experience. I think some of the lessons learned on these trips will stick with them much, much longer than whatever they learn in the classroom. Going to the Roman Coliseum, going to the Vatican, going to Normandy and the cemeteries, all of it is a teaching tool.

To be totally honest, I'm guessing two thirds or more of the team has ancestors in Africa. To think about slavery, and apartheid, and poverty, and opportunity, is such a wonderful thing. I'm very happy for the kids. And really, I think there are more than a few alumni at OSU and Alabama and Georgia and Clemson and USC and UCLA and Wisconsin and Florida and Miami and Harvard and Yale and Princeton and on and on and on who could easily fund something like this for their school.

I mean, I'm thinking about the athletic facilities and amenities, and they already have more than they know what to do with. The TV income in the Big 10 is obscene. There is money to pay for a trip like this. It may be expensive to you and to me, but to a billionaire? This is chump change.

HS
JarheadBuck's picture

I think it's a great idea for his team, as long as he gets some alumni to foot the bill.  My question is how the hell it does not qualify as an extra benefit provided to football team members (not available to other students) and does not cause a stink related to Title IX since other sports (especially female ones) don't get that sort of benefit.

Of course, it doesn't help them play better if they don't practice, but the experience is great for the kids and teambuilding is always good.

It would be cheaper to take the team to Cedar Point and wonder how costly that would be to go there and what about pass ports and would you need shots once you return? I heard Harbaugh didn't fly back with the team after their Bowl game because he went to Africa to make reservation's. I guess they will leave the light on for them. Going to Africa would be a great trip for your African American kids to be very honest.

HS
milhouse4588's picture

These trips absolutely provide value to the kids. It's silly to even try to argue otherwise. International travel and experiencing other cultures should be encouraged.

But will it help their football team play better football? No. No it won't. Still won't beat us, and still won't get to Indy.

But the trip itself is pretty awesome.

They have done this the past 2 years and plan to continue indefinitely as long as JH is there.  It is fully funded by a UM donor and is considered an educational and life experience, not a football specific activity, although I'm sure JH is aware of the publicity is generates.  But, it makes no attempts to try and "sell" it as a football instructional tool, ie to make his players better at football.  I see no problem with it as it gives kids a unique opportunity to see the world they may otherwise not be able to.  There's really no harm there and only positives so long as you can afford it, which they can.  Hard to find fault there beyond rivals being rivals and not liking the other guys.

Strength equipment is expensive & guarantees you nothing. A strong will is free & will give you everything you need.

What's the difference between this and Warren Buffett writing a personal check to every player on Nebraska's roster every year?

Damn. This is from a 2013 article

Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick made more than $64.9 million last year, according to a proxy statement filed with the SEC today. According to Reuters, that makes Kotick one of the highest paid CEOs in the United States.

His actual salary that year was only $2 million of that. Looking at their stock it dropped in half over the past year. Trying to recover some of that through layoffs instead of actually being a great CEO and manager.

Dicks Sporting Goods is another that laid of a ton of people at their HQ a year or two ago. They hired them all five years earlier without telling them it was for a five year plan only to build up their stores and footprint. Damn shame. I think they even had $23.4 million dollars just magically disappear in an “computational error” or something a few years ago. The CFO was forced out on that, with severance of course.
