Awards are always a tricky thing since it’s people’s opinion/bias mixed with facts/stats. Granted, the stats don’t always tell the whole story, but if you win a national championship or undefeated in the regular season (Tressel 2002, Meyer 2012), you should probably be the COY for your conference.

HS

Let them have all the coaching trophies, I’ll take the wins and titles.

No doubt Scott Frost will take Nebraska to 8-4 range and win it this year.

I think you've highlighted the most likely CotY outcome next year.  For a long time, I've believed that Meyer was purposely overlooked because of how talented OSU was, i.e. winning 90% of the games was reward enough, at least for the head coach, and voters weren't going to give him any more plaudits than that.  I don't know how true any of this theory really is, but there's a lot of smoke.

I survived Cooper, and I hate Tai Streets.

HS
AZ Buckeye13's picture

Meyer took over a team that was 6-7 in 2011 and went 12-0 in 2012. He lost the award to O'Brien who went 8-4. O'Brien took over a Penn State team that went 9-4 the prior year.

In 2014 Meyer had a team that looked dead in the water after week 3 and won a NC with his 3rd team QB. The COY award went to Jerry Kill of Minnesota who went 8-5.

Also, this seems to be a BIG issue. Saban has won COY honors in the SEC 3 times and has the best talent in the country year after year.

HS
Extramedium's picture

being overlooked for COY because your team is too talented overlooks the fact that one of the coach’s most important jobs is to bring in that talent.

They should just change the name of the award to “coach of the most improved team compared to last season” or “the coach who did most with the least (because of his poor recruiting)”

I am predicting Chase Young will end the NAGURSKI-WOODSON DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR drought this year!  K.J. Hill for the wide receiver of the year seems a solid possibility as well.

As much as I loved Kwon we dont beat Alabama and Oregon without Darron Lee stopping all those flash screens and throws into the flat, the very thing that doomed our 2013 season.

The difference between Lee, Kwon, and Shazier was razor thin

Statistically Shazier was in a class of his own (even after excluding his 2011 season under Fickell), but that may be more of a general statement on the overall state of those defenses.

seasons under meyer Solo tackles total tackles sacks ff int
shazier (1.5) 172 259 (40.5 for loss) 12 4 1 (1 TD, 4 PD)
lee (2) 89 146 (27 for loss) 11 3 (2 FR-TD) 3 (1 TD, 5 PD)
mcmillan (3) 136 275 (18 for loss) 6 2 1 (1 TD, 10 PD)

Maybe both. He was needed to make all those plays for the 2013 defense. The defense the subsequent three years was much more well rounded for Kwon and Lee.

HS

Also, I recently rewatched the Game highlights for 2018. Incredible how many calls the refs fabricated in support of TTUN. At least 14 of their points were the direct result of clear cheating. There has to be some sort of punishment where bias is evident. We should not shrug our shoulders and accept this. Maybe $ 500,000 fine and 2 years in prison. Seem harsh? Don't think so.

HS

That head shot on Dwayne as he slid was a terrible missed call.  And considering the number of such calls against Meyer's teams over the years, not just last season, I do in fact get the feeling the Buckeye games are handicapped deliberately. I've not seen any other team have to deal with the frequency of that call.

HS

The blatant miss on that call plus the unsportsmanlike on Meyer directly after was insult to injury.  Not to mention the extra 2-3 yards they gave UM on multiple spots.

HS
TNT's picture

Exceeding expectations is tough to do at a school where we (reasonable or not) expect a national title every year. When you're perceived as having the absolute top talent in the conference, it's hard to also be perceived as "coaching them up". The trophy is literally named after 3 coaches from Ohio. They expect Ohio State to be the best. All the time.

HS
LWiegand91's picture

Somehow other conferences are able to sort that out (Saban SEC COY 3 times, Sweeney ACC COY 2 times)

HS
TNT's picture

What was Alabama in the ~30 years before Saban? What was Clemson in the ~30 years before Dabo? We were perennial title contenders under Cooper, Tressel, and Meyer, and I wouldn't trade that excitement for a dozen COY awards.

HS
yantubos's picture

Using superior recruiting as a knock AGAINST OSU is patently ridiculous. As we all know, recruiting is part of coaching in college football. OSU wins because of its recruiting. A lot of schools win DESPITE poor recruiting. Them's the facts.

HS
brutus0717's picture

I don't pay a whole lot of attention to awards since they're so subjective. And the COY award hasnt meant anything to me in a long time. You can't tell me Tress or Urban never deserved it over Ferentz.

Tressel, in his second year, doubled the win total from 2001 en route to the natty and becoming the first team in Div.1A history to win 14 games in one season (modern era).  Won national coach of the year... but apparently not good enough for B1G.

Almost as impressive, Urban Meyer in his first year doubles the win total from the prior year, with zero postseason to play for and goes undefeated.  Yet, they give it to PSU's butt-chin for winning LESS games than the previous year.

...and we'll drink to old Ohio til we wobble in our shoes.

Love this....

Haskins threw the most deep touchdowns (20-plus air yards) of any Big Ten quarterback, yet he attempted deep passes at one of the lowest rates within the conference.

HS
Buckeye Chuck's picture

Urban Meyer took the Buckeyes from 6-7 to 12-0 in his first season, and not only couldn't win Big Ten Coach of the Year, he lost it to a coach whose team actually had fewer wins than the year before. Clearly they were grading on a curve and rewarding O'Brien for the Nit program not totally imploding, but that was proof positive that OSU coaches are effectively ineligible for that award, even though the only objective way of judging a coach is how good his team is.

Quadcities- your immediate reaction is laughable. This website is a business. It is paid for by ads. They WILL lose readers if this site continues to be sloppy. It’s not too much to ask that someone actually review an article before it’s posted. Recently a writer referred to Marcus Lattimore vs our own Marshon Lattimore. It’s simple stuff. I love this site- I spend more time on it than I care to admit. I just want it to succeed. I’m a digital marketer and have been doing this for 15 years. This is a slippery slope that I don’t want to see my favorite site fall down....

Probably not.  The typos and grammar issues are pretty few and far between, despite a vocal minority's attempts to suggest otherwise.  So long as it doesn't impair the readability of the site -- it rarely does -- 99.99% of people don't care.

Everybody comes here for timely and well thought out news about OSU-related stuff.  Nobody cares if the work-product is Pulitzer worthy.

I will never understand those who bitch and whine about something they got for free.

It’s just like people who “bitch” about issues with Facebook and YouTube that they also use for free...

Regardless- as I’ve stated before, I love this website. I spend a ton of time here. We’re all allowed to have our opinions, my friend. And my opinion is simply that things have gotten a bit sloppy here lately.

I'm willing to accept the position of Sr. Director of Proofreading in return for 1 mid-to-high tier bourbon delivered directly to my residence on the first Friday of each month.

I will expect the offer sheet in reply to this comment.

Awards are nice. But any player (or coach) would gladly give up the individual awards to win B1G Championships and CFP. In our conference there appears to be several awards reserved as "participation trophies" for those who have no shot at a meaningful award. That's ok, if that's what you're willing to settle for...

B1G COY means absolutely nothing.  I mean Dennis Green (RIP) won it in '82 with a 3-8 record at NW.  Apparently, the more you lose the better your odds are of winning.  In case you're interested, here's a link the past winners:  https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/awards/big-ten-coy.html

I kind of only pay attention to these awards the day they're announced, and then I forget about them.  We talk about COY enough that I knew Meyer had never won it.  That's a shame, but....

HOW IN THE HELL HAVE WE NOT HAD A DB WIN THE DB OF THE YEAR AWARD?

IIRC, Roby, Conley, Lattimore, Apple, Hooker were all 1st round picks.  Bell was a 2nd rounder.  I'm probably forgetting someone too.  That's a true crime that we didn't have one in Meyer's era win the award.  Hooker especially jumps to mind, because he had multiple INTs returned for TDs.

my favorite line. I love when your boss walks in, all proud, thanks you for a great year and hands you a 3% raise. Inflation is between 2.5-3% a year on average, and after taxes, you’re “technically” getting less purchasing power. Then they’re surprised that you left for a 25% bump elsewhere.
