Iowa completed its schedule without facing Penn State, Michigan or Ohio State.
Nice job scheduling, Big 10. Looks like a Wisconsin football schedule.
That's gotta be tough to pull off.
Go get'em Cal Poppy - we are behind you !!
It's not a rivalry .............. it's a wreckoning.
But will it lead to a Wisconsin "getting exposed in the B1G championship game" moment? Gonna have to face them all now. Nowhere to hide.
Class of 2010.
Have to agree here. I mean, I'd say relative to the past few years obviously the Wrestlebucks are down, but somehow Iowa avoids the top 3 programs on the eastern side of the conference? Suspect at best if you ask me...
Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.
I highly doubt this was a planned conspiracy.
Each B10 program did not wrestle four other B10 programs.. and each team had the same schedule as one other team, based I guess on proximity/rivalry status.
ILLINOIS-NORTHWESTERN, INDIANA-PURDUE, IOWA-MINNESOTA, MARYLAND-RUTGERS, MICHIGAN-MICHIGAN STATE, NEBRASKA-WISCONSIN, OHIO STATE-PENN STATE
So, Minnesota did not face the same four opponents as Iowa.
(this is how everyone's schedule looked)
The Big Ten uses "protected pairs" for their scheduling. Everyone wrestles the other half of their pair, plus four other pairs.
1. OSU/PSU (skip 2 and 7)
2. Iowa/Minnesota (skip 1 and 3)
3. UM/MSU (skip 2 and 5)
4. IU/Purdue (skip 5 and 6)
5. Wisc/Neb (skip 3 and 4)
6. Ill/NU (skip 4 and 7)
7. Rutg/UMD (skip 1 and 6)
A more elegant explanation than my feeble attempt, thank you!
So the question is: How has Iowa's schedule varied over the seasons since protected pairs have been implemented? Is there a bias?
I would personally much rather see parity among competition than major blowouts. I suspect this would be favored by most fans of any sport. Could scheduling somehow include upper-tier programs competing mainly against upper-tier programs, and lower-tier programs competing mainly against lower-tier programs?? It may be worth trying. At a minimum, it would be nice if an upper-tier program like Iowa did not miss out on wrestling three other upper-tier programs -- for entertainment value alone.
Just looking at Iowa and Ohio State's schedules over the last five years, it appears that they rotate the pairs in pairs. If that makes sense. Iowa will always skip 1&3, 4&5, or 6&7. Staggering the rotation sounds like it'd make more sense.
In Iowa's defense, Minnesota was the biggest threat to Iowa until PSU/OSU came on the scene. Minnesota won national duals just five years ago. If anything, the pairing, at least at the time it was designed, singled out Iowa. So to speak. Everyone is matched up geographically, except Nebraska and Wisconsin. Minnesota and Iowa separate them.
Good observation -- it looks like the past five seasons (including this one) are part of the cycle.
Before then, there was not so much regularity.
So, next season we should not face Indiana+Purdue and Michigan+Michigan State..
That sounds about right
Good for Iowa.
When will the tournament matchups come out? I imagine there will be psu/iowa match ups, I don't have any idea how wrestling tourneys work.
Thanks for the updates as always Andy!
God > Family > Buckeyes football
Each weight class is seeded individually, typically by coaches vote, to account for some wrestlers having built better win-loss records against inferior opposition. Generally speaking, with the B1G having ten of the InterMat Rankings' top nineteen teams, there's nowhere to hide in the Big Ten Tournament... the cream will rise to the top.
Sadly, I don't think OSU has the depth to compete with Penn State this year.
Where can I find the conference standings?
Pulled off the conference web site, NPB:
I had to run away high, so I wouldn't come home low...
Thank you kind sir!
Penn State and rivals Penn State and TTUN
FTFY, Penn State is not our rival.
That's a Buckeye touchdown!
In wrestling, Ohio State v. Penn State is most certainly a rivalry, any way you slice it.
hey andy, are we going to see the 141 matchup this week or will one or both coaches take their top guys out of the lineup that could effect ncaa seeding
are we going to see the 141 matchup this week or will one or both coaches take their top guys out of the lineup that could effect ncaa seeding
Boy oh boy, great question, but my gut says it's happening. McKenna believes in himself, and he's the first guy listed for the athletes talking to the media at this week's availability. That's not to say that something crazy won't happen, but I feel like McKenna wants this match to happen and Yanni D doesn't seem like the type to duck anyone. Heck, he wrestled the back half of last year's NCAA Tournament on a torn ACL, right?
I was kinda making a joke. I don't follow wrestling that much as I wouldn't last a second on the mat, but it seems to be a common theme to deny a rivalry with Penn State.
No harm, no foul 2K18 :)
Penn St IS a rival.
Whoso would be a man, must be a non-conformist.
Coach Ryan always has his guys wresting at their peak going into the NCAA tournament. Ohio State will probably finish in second place this year.

I'm fully confident the Wrestle Bucks would take down (pun intended?) Iowa...assuming the match isn't at Kinnick Stadium under the lights.
125 Lee (IA) tech fall Heinselman (OSU) Iowa 5 - OSU 0
133 DeSanto (IA) tech fall or MD Pletcher (OSU) Iowa 10/9 - OSU 0
141 McKenna (OSU) MD Turk (IA) Iowa 10/9 - OSU 4
149 Jordan (OSU) dec Lugo (IA) Iowa 10/9 - OSU 7
157 Young (IA) dec Hayes (OSU) Iowa 13/12 - OSU 7
165 Marinelli (IA) MD Romero or Campbell (OSU) Iowa 17/16 - OSU 7
174 Smith (OSU) dec Shaw (IA) Iowa 17/16 - OSU 10
184 Martin (OSU) dec Wilcke (IA) Iowa 17/16 - OSU 13
197 Moore (OSU) dec Warner (IA) Iowa 17/16 - OSU 16
285 Stoll (IA) dec Singeltary (OSU) Iowa 20/19 - OSU 16
157 and 174 could go either way. Heinselman or Pletcher might not give up that many points..or could get pinned. Marinelli could possibly earn more than a MD. Martin or Jordan might earn bonus....it would be close...Iowa looks to be better on paper.
I think Martin could MD WIlcke which would make it essentially a toss up as well. Hard to tell but I'd be interested in seeing it happen. Lots of interesting match ups through the B1G's and NCAA's, can't wait to watch it.

If today is any indication, Iowa is going to be wrecked by PSU.
I'm kind of surprised Iowa only had 2 wrestlers in the B1G Championship round. Though 7 of 10 in the top 5 is impressive.
