I'll agree to an extent, but on parenting I've come to a realization through 15 years of doing it that it isn't all on the parents.  I have two VERY different kids.  They are both good kids, but one is very open to learning the lessons his mother and I teach, and the other has to burn their hand on the stove to believe it is hot.  We haven't raised them significantly enough differently for me to come to any other conclusion that quite a bit of who we are is born into us. There are some people who are going to do things that no amount of 'good' parenting is going to stop.

HS

I am taking this and putting it in the memory bank. Wife and I are 18 weeks today. Hopefully I can teach our kid that the stove is hot. Haha

It's the same here with twins. Two completely different personalities on how you deal with discipline. One you can tell her once and she "gets" it. The other it takes multiple times in the corner (for the same thing) to understand where she was wrong.

I was very confused reading the story after seeing the headline. It appears as though he's the same age as the girl on the video on his phone. It seems like the actual charge here is whether he distributed the video illegally and used it to intimidate this person.

HS
NavyBuckeye91's picture

The video is old. It was taken when she was 15 and shows her engaging in six acts with two guys who were 17. Kid should’ve deleted it a long time ago.

Nebraska running back Maurice Washington III faces charges under California’s "revenge porn" law, reports NBC Bay Area.

According to NBC Bay Area, Washington, a San Jose, Calif. native, did not record the video of the then 15-year-old allegedly being sexually assaulted. He is accused of keeping the video on his phone and sending it the victim last March. He is not part of the alleged assault involving his ex-girlfriend and two former classmates.

Washington allegedly sent the video with the message, "Remember this hoe [sic]."

According to NBC Bay Area, Washington is being charged under the "Revenge Porn" law since he’s accused of sending the video to inflict emotional damage on the victim. He is also being charged with with distribution of child pornography, which is a felony, since the victim was 15 when the video was recorded.

One of the men in the video who recorded and sent it around was arrested in 2016. He was placed on probation for distribution of child pornography.

Washington's attorney, John C. Ball, issued a statement Sunday.

"This is a situation involving an inappropriate cell phone video. The allegations are that Mr. Washington sent that video to his high school girlfriend. Mr. Washington did not make the video, nor does he appear in the video. The incident is alleged to have taken place in California, several years ago. Mr. Washington will continue to be fully cooperative with the authorities in this situation. We are in contact with those authorities, and are in the process of making arrangements to move forward and resolve this matter. Mr. Washington has confidence in our justice system, and knows that he can rely on the fundamental constitutional rights of due process and the presumption of innocence."

I don't even recall us recruiting this guy tbh. But even if he had come here and this had happened he would've been out the door just like Bri'Onte Dunn was.

HS
stxbuck's picture

I'm sure he'll be gone from Lincoln-but it's the kind of publicity no program needs. There was quite a bit of chatter about him on here-he was listed as having an offer fairly early and there was talk of him visiting.

HS
Dstacify's picture

Meh. These are college kids. Players get in trouble and kicked off the team all the time. You really think this incident is going to destroy Frost's momentum at Nebraska right now? I highly doubt it. That's not to downplay how horrible what he did is if he is guilty but one player on a team of 85+ isn't going to bring the whole program down with him. It didn't happen when Bri'Onte Dunn got ousted in 2016 and it wouldn't have happened with Mo Washington either had he decided to come here. OSU would've moved on, simple as that. Hell, we experienced this to a lesser degree recently with Brian Snead (though he was not in any legal trouble as far as I know).

11 Strong.

HS
stxbuck's picture

I agree, this isn't going to affect Frost's momentum, just glad the story is big news in the World-Herald, not the Dispatch. Also, this is a cautionary tale for recruiting fans that red flags on recruits are there for a reason.

HS
Dstacify's picture

Were there recruiting flags around Torrance Gibson and Brian Snead when we recruited them? Gibson in particular, what he got in trouble for was an absolute shock tbh. Guys make bad decisions in college all the time that they never would've made during their HS or primary school years when they were living at home. It's part of the downside of living on your own for the first time. You have freedoms that you didn't have when you were living under your parents' roof (of course this isn't the case in every household).

11 Strong.

HS
stxbuck's picture

Recruiting "analysts" need to note and report on red flags for recruits as opposed to regurgitating tweeted Top 15 lists or So and So got named to Such and Such All Star game. You read the article about the kid's background- 3 HSs and an expulsion in his career does not speak well to someone adjusting to campus life.

HS
Dstacify's picture

I agree with you on that. To my knowledge Snead and Gibson didn't have any red flags like that prior to coming to OSU though. Come to think of it neither did Bri'Onte Dunn.

11 Strong.

HS
Beantown_Buckeye's picture

The schools that recruited him obviously knew his background. Recruiting analysts do mention this stuff sometimes but let's be honest, these guys aren't exactly hard hitting journalists who are trying to break tough news stories. They want to write about football and I doubt most want to get personally involved in writing things that could screw up a kid's recruitment.

HS
Mortc15's picture

Look at Kareem Hunt. He ended up at Toledo because of his history in high school in Cle. Everyone knew about it, including guys coaching against him. Talent wasn't an issue according to those people at any point in his career. He ended up at Toledo, instead of OSU/PSU/etc because of off-the-field stuff.

I don't understand the charge of intent to cause distress if you read the quote from the alleged victim.  Said she reached out to say hi and congratulate him on his Nebraska future and he responded by sending her the video.  that seems like a pretty simple just leave me alone if anything, especially if he had nothing to do with the making or sharing of the initial video.

the real crime involves the 2 aforementioned boys.

HS
stxbuck's picture

Sending a rape victim a replay of the incident isn't "intending to cause distress"? Seems pretty clear cut to me.

BB. Here is an anecdote that we all can relate to.  < I doubt it, because when a fellow reaches about fourteen years of age, he gets to the place where, as Mark Twain said, he knows so much and his father knows so little, that he can’t bear to have the old man around. When he gets to be eighteen he consults his father regarding some of the minor issues; but the real worth while things he decides for himself. When he gets to be twenty-two, he marvels at how much his father has learned during the past eight years. >

We all think things are so much worse looking back on things which is why Twain also asserted that “the problem with youth is that it is wasted on the young.”

The soldier is my son.  The school I gone to didn’t teach much grammar.

The fact that it happened at your school doesn't make it right. Maybe one day you'll have a daughter and you'll feel like shit like this should get him kicked off the team.

I'm not saying it is right, just saying that sexting or revenge porn is commonplace.

I would advise my son to respect women, and my daughter to not mess around w/ dumb teenage boys.

HS
Wargor's picture

I'm not sure quite what the parameters of 'revenge porn' are, but sending a video of a sexual assault to the victim seems a bit extreme.  I'm not typically for equating hurt feelings with actual violence, but if that doesn't violate the spirit of, 'don't hit women' type rules, I don't know what would.

HS
stxbuck's picture

So b/c something unequivocably bad is commonplace, a coach should tolerate the behavior on his team?

HS
saintstephen11's picture

I'd be careful, because you can be prosecuted for possession of kiddie porn if you have this stuff on your phone. Really serious offense and you will get hurt badly in prison once you get there.

HS
Wargor's picture

No, I'd say you can tell who didn't read the article thoroughly enough as I didn't at first.

And as I posted above, we need new terms to distinguish from what I guess you are thinking of when you hear 'child porn' and a 19 year old sending a video of something presumably received when he was 17 of two 17 year-olds and a 15 year old.  That ain't good, and the circumstances make it worse, but I can't lump it in the same bucket as the 'sick f%$!s' that collect thousands of images of kids aged in the single digits.  At least, that's what I think of when I hear 'child porn'.

Things I have read.

- The video was recently sent to him by someone else. I'm sure he saw it initially as well but when he got it again he somehow felt like it would be a good idea to send it to her.

- It wasn't sent from his phone. It came from his adoptive dad's phone. Apparently.

- The weirdest part is the police say they were trying to contact him for questioning since August. He was never charged until now. A lawyer contacted the police claiming to represent the UNL athletic department and Washington and had the police send documents. The lawyer recently said that he has never represented the UNL athletic department and never told them that. So who knows where those documents went, if Washington ever got them. The AD said recently that they were made aware of allegations but were never given details and the police never contacted them again.

Agree with the 2nd half of this statement but... hardly uncommon? You regularly see people sending 2 year old sex tapes of their 15 year old ex to said ex when she tries to congratulate him? This is a shithead move from a shithead person, and is not commonplace in society whatsoever. He should be punished by Nebraska, but agree that jail is overkill.

There's a MASSIVE difference between that, and what occurred here with Washington. This is a 2 year old tape that Washington sent to his ex saying "remember this hoe?" after she congratulated him on his commitment. Kid is a complete scumbag

The guy is a complete dickhead for sending the video to his ex. He derserves at least three punches in the face from the girls father but charging him with child porn is way over the top like someone having to register as a sex offender if they are caught pissing in public.

That's how winners play. We convince the other guy he's making all the right moves.
