Not surprised and not even mad specifically at Clemson. PEDs are used by almost every athlete at the top every sport, maybe even EVERY athlete at or near the top of their sport. Testing is a farce. I'll say it again, if the NCAA, NFL, and other sports actually took the health of their athletes seriously, PED testing would be drastically different.

Heck, if you go to a gym, odds are several "normal" dudes there take roids simply for aesthetics.

If they "accidentally" handed out PEDs, why only 3 players?  Seems to me with all the sleep, nutrition, conditioning studies out there in use by D1 programs, they regiment a LOT more than 3 players dietary needs...

Go Bucks!

HS
Zonabuck's picture

There were only something like 19 players “randomly” tested. That’s over 15% who tested positive. Also, remember - the PED they tested positive for is not approved by the FDA for human consumption, which means it’s not available in any food or drink. Either they got hold of it as some sort of cream that can be administered via the skin, or they obtained it illegally in a consumable. That makes Dabo’s “this stuff is in energy drinks” all the more laughable. This guy knows there’s no sheriff coming.

HS
TLeeUpInThisJ's picture

Regarding the FDA, they handle supplements with an entirely different process which is spelled out clearly on their website. Manufacturers themselves are responsible for evaluating the safety of their own products -- it is not like "conventional" food and drink. (https://www.fda.gov/Food/DietarySupplements/). The FDA doesn't have to approve or inspect supplements, but they have the right to go after manufacturers eventually. Accordingly, your assertion of "its either a cream or obtained illegally" is not accurate.

HS
TShell's picture

Thank you for pointing that out, so I don't have to this time. The supplement industry is like the wild west as far as oversight goes. It's not all that uncommon to find out that some "miracle supplement" is tainted with stuff that's not on the label. The "all natural" supplements for treating ED are spiked with Viagra or Cialis. The muscle building vitamins have steroids in them. It's an intentional thing done by some shady manufacturers (To be clear, not all are shady. There are some reputable companies out there. You have to be super careful though) because there is no real regulation there. They spike their products because they wouldn't work very well (if at all) without having that stuff in them. Word gets out this stuff works, sales go up. Right up until the point that the FDA finds out what they are doing (this occurs after the fact, because they don't oversee dietary supplements, but they can hammer companies that are selling misbranded or adulterated drugs) and shuts it down. Then they just pop up again under a different brand name, and the process repeats itself. It's like a game of whack-a-mole with prescription drugs and other stuff marketed as "dietary supplements" or "vitamins".

HS
BuckeyeCrusdader's picture

I think you're going a little overboard here. While some supplement companies are definitely sketchy, a lot of it is about cutting cost rather than putting in steroids and prescription boner pills.. that stuff is usually decently expensive and would increase the cost of supplement production. The increased risk + the cost + immediate loss of any existing brand equity when caught makes this theory about as valid as a reptilian  race ruling mankind.  Some sketchy supplement companies may sell SARMs and manufacture / package their other supplements in the same facility causing cross contamination. But the truth is Dabo is saying this may have happened "accidentally" at Clemson.. which is highly unbelievable.. if Clemson's strength and nutrition staff has any competence at all it is almost a zero % chance that an accident like this would occur. Just because the supplement industry isn't heavily regulated by the FDA doesn't mean you could get steroids accidentally in supplements easily.. if you have any clue what you're doing.

First off you go over this https://www.usada.org/substances/prohibited-list/athlete-guide-2019-prohibited-list/ and https://www.wada-ama.org/en/questions-answers/prohibited-list-qa and https://www.usada.org/wp-content/uploads/wada_2019_english_prohibited_list.pdf and https://www.usada.org/wp-content/uploads/supplement-guide.pdf plus you make sure any supplements you recommend are third party tested and certified http://www.nsf.org/services/by-industry/nutritional-products. Finally you stick to manufactures and brands that have no history of supplements causing possible positives and have been trusted and in business for a long time. Any strength and nutrition team that does not rigorously research and monitor the supplements they recommend (if any) is not fit to be employed by any college athletics program, let alone a big time division 1, power 5 football program.

Dabo should have lied and said that the athletes themselves may have accidentally taken supplements from a less than reputable brand. But saying that it may have been an accident in his program? He either thinks people are really stupid (and knows the banned supplements were administered purposefully).. or he hired extremely stupid people to run his strength and nutrition program. BTW I have read the amount of ostarine in Dexter Lawrence's sample was pretty high.. especially to be "accidental"

Dabo messed up, potentially. If Urban Meyer said this while coaching Ohio State you better believe the national media and fans around the country would be holding torches to Meyer and Ohio State. Dabo might get lucky and people might look the other way.. but people with half a brain know better.

HS
TShell's picture

Don't know if this will get seen, but I'll just leave this herehttps://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/sda/sdnavigation.cfm?sd=tainted_s...

That's not an exhaustive list either. I'm a pharmacist. I know about looking for reputable products with NSF and USP verification, but I don't think the general public is fully aware of that. I always make sure my patients are educated about this, but I wouldn't be surprised if college kids looking for an edge are not. The S&C dept should have known better, but shit happens.

If you notice in the list, some of those products the affected Lots are ALL. That's an intentional additive, not an accidental thing.

I did a continuing education seminar in the years ago with Dr. Nicholas Hall near campus. He is a renown psychoneuroimmunologist that started the first big wellness centers in USA. Towards the end of the conference someone asked him about PED's, since it was about the time of the Yankees big players testing positive. Dr. Hall said, when one of those big athletes come into a wellness center the players handling team makes sure that a tool that could test for such things as PEDS does not come anywhere near those players.

On a side note, as I understand statistics from stats 2220, the correct inference is that, based on that sample, the Clemson team is on PED's. I am unsure why more isn't made of it.

HS

Well I did find this article about a UFC fighter who was actually believed to be innocent after having tested positive for ostarine.  Granted the issues in the article I've linked to happened 4 years ago .... but you gotta wonder how much of it is still happening.  So this means on of the three could have happened:

1) The kids took the "stuff" on their own and either knew or didn't know the ostarine was in there                                                              2) The "stuff" that was given by the staff had the ostarine in it and the coaching staff did or didn't know (unlikely as more would have tested positive for the ostarine.                                                                                                                                                                  3) The "stuff" that is manufactured and is allowed for NCAA use is also manufactured on some equipment that includes ostarine for other supplements that are not allowed for use in NCAA sports.

I frequent various bodybuilder sites, lifting is a hobby of mine. I've read about Ostarine and other SARMs years ago. I don't dabble in anything that would cause an impact on my natural hormonal system, so no steroids, SARMs, prohormones, etc. From what I remember, SARMs like Ostarine are only available from certain websites for "non human research purposes only" and are very CLEARLY banned substances in most everything.

The early hope with SARMs was that they would give steroid like results without lowering or shutting down your natural production of testosterone, but that didn't really pan out.

HS
Buckeye Knight's picture

Somatropin is a form Human Growth Hormone (HGH), which is obviously very popular in bodybuilding and other sports.  Also, banned by most everyone.  Its main use seems to be for children with genetic growth issues.  It's not something I would put into my body.  There is no "free lunch" when you screw with your natural hormones, it WILL affect the other systems of your body.

If I may ask, at 58, why do you take it? There may be better and/or safer ways to achieve your goals.

Side Effects

Headache, nausea, vomiting, fatigue, muscle pain, or weakness may occur. If these symptoms continue or become bothersome, inform your doctor or pharmacist promptly.

Remember that your doctor has prescribed this medication because he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.

Tell your doctor right away if you have any serious side effects, including: development of a limp, persistent fatigue, unusual/unexplained weight gain, persistent cold intolerance, persistent slow heartbeat, fast heartbeat, ear pain/itching, hearing problems, joint/hip/knee pain, numbness/tingling, unusual increase in thirst or urination, swelling hands/ankles/feet, change in the appearance or size of any mole, persistent nausea/vomiting, severe stomach/abdominal pain.

Get medical help right away if you have any very serious side effects, including: visionproblems/changes, seizure, severe headache.

Rare (possibly fatal) lung/breathing problems may be caused by this medication in children with Prader-Willi syndrome. Those at higher risk include males, severely overweight children, or those with serious lung/breathing problems ( e.g., sleep apnea, lung infections, lung disease). Children should be checked for certain breathing problems (upper airway obstruction) before and during treatment. Heavy snoring or irregular breathing during sleep (sleep apnea) are signs of airway obstruction. Tell the doctor right away if these signs occur. Also report any signs of lung infection, such as fever, persistent cough, or trouble breathing.

Somatropin may increase your risk of getting a tumor or cancer. Discuss the details and the risks and benefits of this medication with your doctor.

A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, get medical help right away if you notice any of the following symptoms of a serious allergic reaction: rash, itching/severe swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), dizziness, trouble breathing.

This is not a complete list of possible side effects. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Could be. Or it could go the other way. When we had a coach run out of town for the tats-for-trinkets scandal, people wanted OSU penalized even further due to the rogue state of the program. Then when AJ Green got caught selling jerseys for $1000 a piece, he was suspended,  it was treated more like a victim. Discussion turned to how you could accommodate kids with their own brand value when there were really nice people wanting to buy a piece of history.

Same could happen here. If SEC and ACC teams get busted, you could see talking heads on their networks start openly questioning whether it’s just too darn hard to keep track of all these new supplements and the kids shouldn’t be victimized for eating or drinking something that may or may not be on a prohibited list. It’ll be about protecting the athlete’s market potential over protecting the athlete.

HS
Kangarooman's picture

The real question is why OSU seems so willing to empower the witch hunt. I feel like that's why we get hammered whenever there is any hint of a scandal.

Does anyone think Alabama or Clemson are going to cooperate one bit with any investigation? Are those schools going to self impose any suspension for Dabo or Saban? No, they arent. And OSU should take note.

HS
Das Hufeisen's picture

In all fairness there won't be relentless coverage of any Bama or Clemson scandal. Timing is important too. The slow sports news cycle of August is perfect for endless talk about scandals, January and February not so much.

HS
Zonabuck's picture

There's no question that "come on in, we will grant you access to everything" is code for "do whatever you can to blow up the program", which seems to happen even when nothing really big is found.  They get behind the story and can't ever get traction on the truth.  Meanwhile, programs who respond with nothing more than "no we didn't" seem to get away with all of it, as if the only way to be held accountable is to admit wrongdoing.

Even Miami - Nevan Shapiro had done all of the investigative work for the NCAA, keeping journals with dates and cancelled checks, yet Miami denied it and the NCAA let them off scot-free.  And ESPN absolutely has the ability to influence the narrative - either to start the fire and then "innocently" fan flames, or to shift the narrative to "everybody does it, so it isn't an issue".  There's no way they would do anything but protect Clemson with the ACC Network coming on line this fall.

It actually all makes sense. Look at Saban. Sure he did a good job at lsu but wasn't a world beater. He takes over at Alabama and the very next year, they win a title. after going 7-6 they just so happen to become this dominating juggernaut. Same with Clemson, Dabo was going on average 8 wins a year I think, then all of a sudden, out of nowhere they just start dominating also.

Those 2 programs are dirty, I guarantee they are paying recruits hundreds of thousands of dollars to sign, then they are pumping them full of HGH AND SARMs. Then right before the combine they stop taking the peds, so they don't piss dirty.

Well TBF Tat Gate totally happened because someone had an email to prove Tress knew and did nothing. If someone had an email showing Dabo knowingly gave or hid PED use he’d be iced too.

It’s absolutely astonishing the NCAA didn’t look at 3 players (when less than 20 were tested) popping on piss tests and they didn’t test the whole program...

Yeah, but then it was nothing.  Now all of a sudden, it’s something. And the stuff can come from anywhere. It’s a whole undertaking.

When Dabo said “it could have came from anywhere” and the NCAA didn’t do shit to investigate it, I knew it was over. Osterine isn’t in ANYTHING that is legal for ANY competition use and it’s even listed in the NCAAs banned substances list. For them to not blink an eye while having 2-3 weeks to investigate tells me all I need to know.

Yeah, anywhere. Is it in water, Dabo?  In the air?  He plays this country bumpkin thing and thinks it’s cute. And nope, nothing will come of this. There’s probably a breaking story here if a journalist had half the gumption like they would for us.

I think the NCAA is happy to look away unless irrefutable evidence of cheating is put in their face. I’m sure they know damn well this kind of stuff is going on in many programs but it’s bad for public image aka profits.

I honestly don't have an issue with PED's or etc. What I do have an issue with is finding it, sweeping it under the rug and acting like nothing happened.

If you cheat and get caught, you need to be punished. If you're not smart enough to hide your methods, you deserve it.

It's funny how this was reported as a "Mistake". Makes you wonder how many "Mistakes" other teams get before it's not.

As someone with years of experience in Pharma and AAS, this compound is very hard to purchase. Years ago, Obama passed a law making it almost impossible for companies to manufacture designer steroids without stiff penalties and legal action. These young men knew what they were getting themselves into. What Dabo said is passive-aggressive at best and the excuse of compounds like these being "accidentally" ingested is complete and utter BS.

These athletes purchased from a source and the source has access to underground labs. It's simple and illegal. These are HORMONES, not stimulants that affect your Adrenal Gland.
