Like most, I would expect that Fields will become the starter come Fall. But Baldwin is no slouch. A better Baldwin makes a better Fields and vice versa. Both of them will get equal reps up to and including the Spring game. We need both to be equally prepared because we all know what can happen, i.e, 2014.
I look forward to 11W covering both in detail until the game leader truly emerges.
Send the Earth Reverberating
I agree. Coach Day will make the decision after Baldwin and Fields have a chance to compete and show what they can do. We should not annoint Fields as the starter before the quarterbacks have a chance to compete and show what they can do. In the meantime, I hope 11W will give equal coverage to Baldwin. I look forward to reading balanced reporting on both quarterbacks and how the competition is going thru the spring practices and Spring Game - and also in the fall. Let's follow Coach Day's lead and watch the competition. Baldwin is still in the running and we need to recognize that. Embrace the competition!
The problem with giving coverage to Baldwin at this point us that there is no need to cover, as compared to Fields who had both his transfer and eligibility decisions to report on.
Agreed, but now that Fields’ transfer has been properly covered, what needs to be covered now is the competition between the two.
We won't just find out about our quarterbacks. We'll find out about our coach
I really hope Baldwin develops into a top of the line QB. It would be a fine ending to an OSU career that shows waiting isn't all bad.
I’m ready for the spring game! Let’s go bucks!

Me too! If for no other reason, we will finally have pictures of Fields in Scarlet and Gray. I'm so tired of seeing Georgia unis. That first practice, let those cameras fly.
Maybe this will tide you over...

Haha, nice edit to whomever did the job. They forgot to edit Haskins throwing hand, though.
Depth is a concern, but it's not as if Ohio State has been thin there before (and still managed to thrive).
I cannot wait to see all the new faces in action.
Hindsight is, and in, 2020
Yup. I'm OK with third-string quarterbacks, even.
A thing repeated will happen a third time.
Third-String QB has indeed been kind to Ohio state in the recent past.
In old Ohio there's a team that's known throughout the land...
How much did 12-Gauge play this year?
Our honor defend, so we'll fight to the end !
I hope Kevin is ok. No Scully is kinda wierd.
m GO BLOW!!!
It is odd, but he may have just forgotten to set the auto upload. I seem to recall DJ doing that on occasion as well. No Skully there did bring me to read this piece and the resulting comments, so there’s that.

Check the forums. He posted about it.
I have seen precious little of Baldwin, and am curious to see more. However, we have all seen Fields in action and holy cow-that is some talent. Lose Haskins and Martell, and somehow not skip a beat. Not a bad place to be.
To me, it looks like the Bucks fell up.

Hopefully Baldwin sticks around if Fields is the starter the next two years. If not, depth could become a major issue

It looks like there’s a path for him to potentially start. Jack Miller looks really good, but he doesn’t look “start freshman year” good to me. He may need 2 or 3 years to develop. If I’m not mistaken, Miller’s first year in the program would be Field’s last. I’m sure there will be a competition after that giving Baldwin a chance to start.
I'm predicting 2 years starting for each them - Fields, Baldwin, Miller - provided Miller doesn't get antsy about waiting. But after seeing what Day and Co will have done with Haskins, Fields and Baldwin, he should realize it's worth the wait.
I'm with you Hovenaut. The new faces every year , the excitment of not knowing what they bring to the table.
That may be the best part of the off season.
Yesterday's news of Field's eligibility was huge. Yes, Fields is the perceived front runner for the starting position, but Baldwin and Chugnov are huge to Ohio State's success. Day will have these men ready for the season and, I believe, his QB development pedigree will bring in more QB talent to the Ohio State University.
Can we get this attorney an ice cream cake or one of those edible arrangements?....something.....I mean first he gives us Shea Patterson to shit on and then Justin Fields gets immediate eligibility too. Honorary Buckeye. Thanks buddy.
The best news is that Fields must stay in college for two more years before he is eligible to enter the NFL draft.
Agree we won't have another one and done like we had with Haskins or hooker.
I was wondering why everyone seemed so sure we got him for two seasons, thanks
You have to be removed from your high school graduating class for three years before you can enter the NFL draft, IIRC. Or in most cases of these players...have been in college for three years (including any red shirt years).
The new defensive brain trust needs to play it’s part, too. We all thought we’d see more of Martell last year after games were in hand, but too often we let weaker teams stay close. That hurt Martell’s development and maybe gave Haskins some stat padding.
**This space to be filled with an inspirational quote from a famous Buckeye**

Could be. If OSU's defense had been average or better, that's entirely possible.
Justin Fields's immediate eligibility news spreading everywhere.
Ha! Well, they can always wear white. That always works well. ;)
Kids have figured out pretty quickly.....
One year in Ryan Day's system = Top NFL draft pick
4 years in James Franklin's system = Hello Canada!
1st world problems. Meanwhile in An Arbor....
We just showed Michigan the correct way to "QB transfer."
"If you're not changing, you're falling behind."
I love Baldwin’s attitude throughout all of this. That kid is a gamer and I’m confident if called upon, he will be ready. We are in good hands with Fields and Baldwin.
Fields of Dreams
Baldwin waited his turn in HS, and he landed at Ohio State. I don't expect him to go anywhere, unless perhaps if Miller supplants him in his second spring.
If Baldwin proves to be a better decision maker, then the assumption of Fields starting, is thrown out the window.
" It's real good whatcha done Anthony, real good ! "
Fields must be pretty darn good. Dwan Mathis or Tate Martell didn’t want any part of a competition when it came to him
Dwan Mathis or Tate Martell didn’t want any part of a competition when it came to him
I see how that applies to Martell but not sure it applies to Mathis as he is still at Georgia and Fields left Georgia.
He was committed here but flipped his commitment to Georgia when it seemed inevitable that Fields would be coming here
Come on man. Mathis switched to Georgia because of Fields
This site (fan comments) is more cautious and fair than other buckeye sites about Fields and Baldwin. Fields does not have a proven college experience yet (not his fault) and there is an overwhelming opinion (by some) that first, the job is his and second, he delivers a NC with no problems. I agree there is a lot to be excited about but neither QB has carried the load or been schemed against in college and there could be a few hiccups along the way. This is the most hype I've seen a newcomer have walking in and being expected to deliver the first game since Schlichter. A lot of pressure (and press)for sure. I'm glad he has the winter, spring and summer to be ready for it.
The hype around Pryor was equal to this.
I don't buy one goddam drop of gas in the state of Michigan!
He wasn't expected to be or was the starting QB the first game.
Like I been saying if Fields is coached up unlike he was at Georgia he will start. That nothing bad on Baldwin but Fields by media and various coaching circles had a higher upside than Sunshine down at the Burnt Orange school down south. Fields already seem to check the box as a hard worker and with his talent ceiling its a no brainer he'll start. Baldwin will get a fair shake though but the odds against him unless he has a flawless Spring or he shows out like the next coming of Joe Montana or something. I just don't see that outta a freshman that was hurt and hasn't played bigtime football like Fields has even in limited snaps. I personally believe that Baldwin was told that he would have a couple years in the fold anyway kind of like Cardale Jones was told by Tressel because of him being injured originally and Haskins was the guy. Fromm only started over him because A he took them to a Ship and loyalty by Smart. Kind of like why Bell didn't play and we can go down the list of Buckeyes that should have played and didn't cause of loyalty and coaches trust. Fromm to me took a step back and the way Georgia handled their Qbs as of late they're going to suffer in recruiting in the future especially vs us. Under Day we will start to see Nfl guys wanna play here. Get ready for another Buckeye Golden Age ladies and gentlemen.
These kids know that you are always just one play away from becoming the starter, since injuries are part of the game. With a completely rebuilt O-Line, Field's legs may be called upon to bail him out of protection breakdown situations. If I'm an opposing DC, I'm bringing the pressure early in the game on that O-Line, hoping to rattle them and make Fields uncomfortable.
In short, how quickly the offensive line pulls together will be the biggest story in 2019 and will go a long way in determining how long our starting QB can remain healthy (does Billy Price have any eligibility left ??!!!). Our QB room best be ready to step up to the plate at any moment this season. In the meantime, Buckeye Nation will keep their collective fingers crossed that Fields enjoys an injury-free stay at the QB position next season.
Let's face it, it's not like the Buckeyes open up with murderer's row. If our inexperienced OL hasn't started to come into shape before game 5, there's issues. It may not be deep but the OL room certainly isn't lacking in talent.
All it takes is one missed assignment and Baldwin is the starter. O-Line depends on so much communication between the front five, that it really doesn't matter the calibre of the opponent. While they may be a talented group, so was the line which played in front of Haskins this season - but, they didn't come close to playing their best football until well into the final third of the season. Dwayne took some major shots during those first 7 - 8 games and OSU was fortunate that he walked away from each one.
This group needs to be on top of things right out of the gate, regardless of who we play. They hold the key to how far the Buckeyes go in 2019, not Dobbins, or Fields. Backs can't run through holes that aren't there (we saw that a lot this past season) and a QB won't complete many passes, when he's throwing from his back. It should be another interesting season and it will start right out of the gate in the first game.
That’s very possible, we were having o-line issues for the greater part of this past season
Thank you. You can win the starting position and twist your ankle getting off of the team bus. I hope for zero injuries but number 2 could be seconds away from starting. All must be focused, prepared and ready to step up and take over.
This is a very good feeling. We shouldnt undersell what a big win having Fields immediately eligible is. We have two great QB’s on the roster and a third coming next year. I expect Fields to win the job this year and start for a couple seasons. Baldwin will have multiple seasons of reps to step in immediately after Fields departs.
Hey Coach...Haskins should have played 29 games as a starter, but we know that wasn’t your call.
Stop it. No changing the past. If you can’t get over it on your own, seek counseling.
You are entitled to you own opinion, not your own facts.
I agree with you and I’m not dwelling on the past. For Coach to say (and I’m paraphrasing) ‘dang it blows we only had The best QB to date in Ohio State history for 1 year’ makes it sound like it was Dwayne’s fault when he likely could have started 2 or even 3.
Everyone knew he had Uber arm talent and freshman start all over the Country over upper classmen. Don’t tell me he needed 2 years of development b/c that’s crap.
I’m not a JT hater but anytime a school has a QB start for 4 years it tells you that QB isn’t good enough to compete for National Championships which frankly is the bar at TOSU. Your only going to get 1 or 2 out of the elite QB’s like Haskins.
Again it wasn’t Day’s call but he out of everyone on the staff knew this kid was NFL caliber. It’s the staff and head coaches responsibility to make sure we get 2 or 3 years out of the best players.
I think Coach Day gets that and this comment gives us the hint he isn’t going to play favorites over the better player!
Here is the thing, neither QB nor the coach who made the decision to start him is here any longer. Why keep dwelling on this? Is this therapeutic for people? SHould i keep blasting posts referencing the poor decision to recruit and start Art Schlichter? At what point do you move on?
What annoys me, is the following: i will admit Urban possibly made the wrong call. Hey, hindsight is 20/20. But the Haskins Truthers state it emphatically, as if they actually know the unknown. Meyer, Day, and Haskins all said he wasn’t ready the year before. Could this be polite coach speak/saying the right thing? Sure. Might it also be the truth? Absolutely. Regardless, people need to stop harping on this because history is already written. I say it half in jest, but if people can’t, maybe they really do need professional help.
Days comments about expecting 3 years out of Haskins is why this has come up.... AGAIN. Love JT and Urban but that was a seriously bad decision and part of the reason many, myself included, are so looking forward to the Ryan Day Era. Day is a bit delusional if he thought he'd get 3 out of Dwayne, but 2 would've been nice. I do like the current QB eligibility progression; Fields 2, Baldwin 1-2, Miller (or whoever shows up) 2. If Fields finishes with Haskins like numbers, top QB will be fighting to get here, just like top D linemen for coach J now. A good problem to have!
But w/o the extra starts, JT wouldn't have been drafted as highly as he was..... Errr never mind.
I feel ya, Tenacious.D, but that issue has been over debated on this website.
No mas, por favor, senor.
Maybe it's just me, and a few others, but we need to pump the brakes just a little bit on anointing Fields the starter over Baldwin. Baldwin has been in the system for a year and knowing the playing book is big. He was also was no slouch in high school.
It is the belief that Fields is a true talent even amongst the great QB talents we have seen on the national stage! That is not to say that Baldwin is not a fantastic QB (I believe he is) it just to say that we now have a QB that for the next two years we can say "sure you have so and so but we have Fields."
I would rather be on hand with 10 men then elsewhere with 10,000 - Timur Lenk
It’s Haskins vs Burrow version 2.0 except neither has much rep time at TOSU.
When Fields went out and dominated in the Elite 11 competition there were comments from the staff about how quickly Fields picked up the playbook that each QB was given. If that is true, Fields should have no trouble learning the playbook between now and Fall practice.
How many of us are saying "I can't wait for the season to start"? My wife just stares at me and says "really, didn't the season just end"?
I may not be the sharpest crayon in the box but I'm one of the most colorful.
Personally I would have no issue with either starting. Feels like Baldwin is being benched before given a chance to prove himself. Go back to articles about him and you’ll see a talent and maturity many don’t have at his age (Mathis).
My hope is the OL comes together quickly and both get PT early on once the season starts. Then if injury does happen both are prepared. Nothing like game experience.
Even if Baldwin is not the starter you have to get him in games to keep him happy and more importantly have him ready in case we have to go to plan B.
I really don't care who the starting QB will be as long as the three of them make it really really difficult for the coaching staff to make that decision. An easy decision is not good news. A difficult decision means there is genuine competition.
New York Buckeye
I'm in my bunker ready for the Barrett fanclub to downvote me to hell but here it goes anyway.
"This was a guy that you expected to get three years out of, and you developed him for two years, got 14 games,” said Day “That was hard. That took a little time to get yourself off the canvas on that one. Because we thought we were going to get three years, we got one.”
THIS gives me great hope for the program. JT was a good college QB but he wasn't a great QB. Meanwhile we had Haskins who truly is a top-tier QB talent siting on the bench.
Urban's decision to have JT start for a 5th year in 2017 was one of the worst in his career IMHO. I think he put his friendship with JT above the team and Buckeye nation.
To my eyes if we would have paired that elite 2017 defense with the elite passer we had sitting on our bench I think we would have won the national championship.
I'm very happy that Day sees things clearly and is starting an era where we don't just talk about completion and the best player playing - but we actually play the best players!
When are you butt hurt fanboys going to get over this? Neither JT nor Haskins are here any more. You have a time machine? Seriously, what do you want at this point, someone to tell you you are righht? Recognize your fake pain? I will do it if you will STFU...
Couldn’t agree more...in fact I just did in response to my initial post. Kudos to you Sir and yes I believe Day is saying ‘we aren’t going to leave more talented players on the bench any longer’. Especially with the free agency portal. You have to play the most talented right away.
Thanks for this response. I often can be harsh, but this has been going on for more than 2 seasons now. We need to turn the page and get excited about the Fields/Baldwin era, because that can actually lead to titles.
In a blow-out, does keeping your starter in really trigger quality reps?
I hope we don’t see the old mentality of keeping the QB in past 50 or 60 reps without relief.
I’ve always thought a pair and a spare we’re enough, that’s what we have. Now, I just hope we never have to drive far in the spare.
Excited about the present and future of buckeye football and the qb position. I think Pryor changed the troy Smith and more recently Pryor changed the perception of the qb position at Ohio State imo.
It's it's ooooon. Let the competition begin. Go Bucks.
I think the real problem started when we went to a different offense. Martell is not a true passer and if he was he would probably still be here. Now that Day is here we will keep recruiting qb's that are fit for the system and just keep reloading. Will qb's transfer probably but I think we might get more big names than ever before at qb and have depth after this season. Call me crazy I wouldn't be surprised for another to come on board some how?
With the Spring practices and games coming for every team, I’ve got to think that there will be at least one QB grad transfer that would think, you know, since I’m not going to start at my current school maybe competing to be QB #3 at OSU might be a pretty sweet deal.
So I think we will pick up one more QB late in the Spring, the 4th QB that Day would like to have as insurance.
I know this is a little off topic, but I no longer live in the region, I wanted to know how our new QB coach's name is pronounced...
...Is it Yur-sick, Yur-sich, Yur-kich, or Yur-kik????
It's going to bug me until I know!
Seattle Buckeye, Green Tony
Check out some of the interviews from last week.
Sooner or later it all gets real.
JT Barrett the type of guy you could get 12-15 years out of if the NCAA would extend the eligibility. Getting 1 year out of Haskins is nobody’s fault but Urban Meyer & Ryan Day. They knew he was an NFL quarterback. & They know the rules. A player can leave for the League after 3 years of college... the fact they waited till his third year to play him was not Dwayne’s fault it’s the coaches.
My issue, as others have posted here regarding the QB battle over the last 5 years.
No problem at all with UFM starting JT if he was truly the best option.
My problem was that neither Haskins, Burrow, or Martell ever truly got much meaningful playing time.
There were at least several times when JT was not getting it done (not entirely his fault) and a change-up would have been welcome, maybe providing a spark.
IMO we had some wasted opportunities that we will never get back.
And here come the turnovers
