Agreed NH. Jones has some great athleticism for a man his size. Will be fun to see how he develops on the gridiron.

Just posting and hoping my comment isn’t deleted.

HS

Yes!  Jones is another; however, there does appear to be less questioning surrounding his decision.  Jones will be announcing tonight at 6:30 PM!  Looks like 92% of the CB's for Jones have been cast in Ohio State's favor.  Someone with the measurables as Jones, moving the way that he does - count me down as being intrigued.  I imagine Coach Mick salivating over the thought of having someone like that in his dojo!

Looks like Wiltfong has CB'd Vimahi to the Buckeyes as well.  He said he did so after speaking with "a couple of sources Tuesday."  Ohio State now holds 67% of the CB's for Vimahi on 247.  I also love that on 247, Vimahi is noted as having "a nasty streak as a blocker."  GIVE ME MORE OF THAT!

I know Vimahi is a good prospect, but can someone explain how he would be a good addition. He’ll be here for 1 year - likely a redshirt year - then he’ll go on a 2 year mission trip where he likely will not be training much, if at all. Then he’ll come back in year 4 (even though I assume the 2 year mission trip won’t count against his eligibility?) and have to relearn the playbook, get back in shape, get his form and footwork back, etc... So maybe 5 years from now he will be able to contribute? I’m not trying to hate on the guy, doing the mission trip is very respectable, I’m  just trying to understand from an OSU football standpoint. Am I missing something here??

HS
TeddyKGB's picture

In 2015, 147 returned Mormon missionaries competed on FBS football rosters, 74 at BYU, according to data compiled by the Deseret News. Missions, in which young Mormon adults are dispatched to far-flung locations to teach about their faith and do service work, have long been a tradition in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It's common for young Mormons to delay their careers or educations (the trips last two years for men, 18 months for women), but viewed through the lens of sports, that gap can be controversial. Outsiders argue they give BYU and other schools with missionary populations (such as Utah and Utah State) an unfair advantage: more mature players, both physically and mentally. Among most in BYU's athletics department, though, the practice has different implications.

"Nothing disrupts training like your mission," says Kalani Sitake, the Cougars' first-year coach, who completed a mission during his college career. "I've heard people say it's a huge advantage. It's not. If it was, everybody would be doing it."

If your goal is helping the team in 2020, then no, this won't help.

If your goal is sustained excellence, then there is a lot of reason to believe he will help the team. I mean, I was happy to see that a top 5 player in the country committed for 2021. It won't help us before 2022 but I am still happy. I view this the same way - good news for the long run.

IBLEEDSCARLETANDGRAY's picture

937Buck, Vimahi is technically a 2019 recruit but this signing is for future depth. Day is playing chess here remember. Think about it this way:

  • Vimahi signs with OSU and postpones his mission, he redshirts for 2019. Best case scenario (with our depth) he's a 2nd stringer by 2020-21 and a starter by 2022-23.
  • Vimahi signs with OSU and goes on his mission, he redshirts for 2019. Worst case scenario he's a 2nd stringer by 2022-23 and a starter by 2024-2025 yet he will be the oldest player on the field.

He was never going to play in 2019 and likely wont in 2020 either. That's why Ryan Day may be going after the grad transfers. Vimahi is talented. This is essentially us signing a 2022 recruit early if he goes on his mission.

HS
937Buck's picture

I guess that all makes sense. I just feel like 2 years away from big time college football may stunt his development - especially for an offensive lineman. Will he count against our scholarship numbers while on his mission trip?

HS

Also of note - coming into today, Ohio State has the third smallest recruiting class in the B1G.  Only Illinois (13) and Rutgers (14) have smaller classes.  Despite this, they have the highest player rating average in the conference, and third highest in the country, trailing only Alabama and Georgia.

I believe it was Givler who mentioned that Vimahi isn't required to complete his Mission until he is 29 years old.  His personal goal is to complete it after his freshman year but the possibility does remain that it could be pushed back.  Please correct me if I am mistaken.

East Coast living with Ohio roots

HS
ANOTHERMICHIGANLOSS's picture

This would be welcome news as long as he would be willing to consider pushing it back.  I mean everyone wants this kid but he isn't going to play much as a freshman, so we are looking at 2023 before he is back?  A lot can happen in that time.  I'm still confused about this whole situation and maybe I'm misinformed or something haha.

HS
Invictus Buck's picture

I am right there with you. One thing I wonder is how does that affect scholarship count? When he is on his mission does that still eat one scholly? How much work and conditioning can he do while focussing on something that isn't football and should be his focus at the time? I think what he is doing is great, following ones faith, but how do you keep the skills you have or hone them while doing something else?

HS
keith7456's picture

While he is gone he doesn't count towards the count because he won't be enrolled in school during that time.

HS
Invictus Buck's picture

Thank you for answering that question. Now we wait to get the other ones answered.

HS
ANOTHERMICHIGANLOSS's picture

Agreed, so many questions.  I mean the kid is a highly rated recruit, but I just don't see how after 3 years of no football and coming in at like 22 years old is going to translate well.  I mean his freshman year is either a redshirt or he loses 1 year of eligibility playing sparingly.  Then by the time he gets back, he basically has to re-condition himself and get himself back into football again after 3 years off.  That could potentially burn his soph and junior seasons.  So then all this for maybe one year?  Or by that time we could have brought in a lot more talent that is at game ready level and he gets lost in the wash all together.

(This is not to discredit the kid for what he is doing, I think it's an admirable practice.  Just thinking in terms of the benefit of OSU landing him.)

HS
Stellar's picture

He doesn't lose his two years of eligibility while he goes on mission. His eligibility clock pauses. So he would be freshman in 2019 and theb come back as a sophomore in 2022 with 4 full years left to play (assuming he redshirts)

HS
NorCal Buckeye's picture

That's the first I've heard of the 5 year eligibility clock stopping for a mission.  If I'm not mistaken, the clock would start the red-shirted freshman year and the 2 year trip would take up years 2 & 3, leaving only year 4 and 5 to return to shape and play.

I've looked around a bit just now and couldn't find anything that states student athletes on a religious mission get an exception on the 5 year clock.  I would definitely appreciate clarification from anyone who has knowledge on the ruling.

HS
Run_Fido_Run's picture

NorCal, I don't know what the rule is . . . but it doesn't make sense for colleges to have accused BYU, Utah, and Utah St of having an unfair advantage by having mission kids if the years spent on mission simply count as lost seasons.

HS
TkeBuck's picture

geez, why the dv's on this?

jt

HS
NorCal Buckeye's picture

Eh, who cares about the DV's.  I had a serious question after doing some research and found nothing.  If some turds want to click the down arrow then they can have at it.

HS
ANOTHERMICHIGANLOSS's picture

I wasn't even considering the eligibility clock, just that even if he redshirts, he comes in with 4 years in 2023 ('19 RS, '20-'22 on mission, return '23), but a kid that has had 3 years off of football isn't going to contribute at OSU in probably 2 years.  It would take him that long to get back into game shape and learn the offense with everyone on the team pretty much being new to him when he returns.  In that scenario, best case you are looking at him maybe having an impact in 2025.  That's freaking 6 seasons from now.  Are we really getting excited about a guy that is maybe going to be on the field in 5-7 years?  I would have to assume that if he commits to a school as big as OSU, he is going to have to commit to pushing the mission out until after he is done.  It just doesn't make sense for OSU if he is planning on going after his freshman year.

HS
ponder10's picture

I'm not a Mormon but know many in Arizona and their not required to take their mission immediately. I believe he can do it at 18 or delay. However, it's most likely he'll do it early in his Buckeye career because the NFL won't wait 2 years for a senior to go.

Just reading a short article from ESPN on Nester flipping to VT from OSU and how the Buckeyes have dropped significantly in the number of ESPN 300 players in the 2019 class.  I took a look at the Rivals team rankings for the 2019 classes and noticed that we are sitting at # 23, which sounds awful (for an OSU program), right up until you notice that we have only signed 15 recruits.  While our quantity indicates the # 23 ranked class, the quality of our recruits (avg. 3.73 stars) sets us up at the # 5 recruiting class, just behind Bama, Oklahoma, Georgia and Texas A&M .....

Give me quality, over quantity, every time .....

Day basically landed Vimahi in one month.  It sucks to lose Nester, but as a lot of people have mentioned, he was wavering even when Urban was still here.  Day essentially went out and replaced Nester with a comparable recruit, just as Urban did by signing NPF when Carman chose elsewhere last year.

In addition to Vimahi, Day has helped land Harrison, Sawyer, was instrumental with Garrett Wilson, Jack Miller, and Harry Miller.  It seems to me that the guy can really recruit.  Obviously he has to continue that and really hit a home run with the 2020 class, but I like I'm seeing so far.

HS
keith7456's picture

https://www.athleticscholarships.net/question/what-is-grey-shirting

Grey shirting is a recruiting term that is not as commonly used as the term redshirting. A grey shirt is an incoming college freshman who postpones his enrollment in classes until the second term of his freshman year. This means they don’t take classes until the winter term. The NCAA allows college athletes five years to complete four years of eligibility after initial enrollment.

HS
The Cynic's picture

That’s correct. The NCAA made an allowyfor religious purposes years ago for Mormons. That’s why BYU has so many older guys always playing.

HS
CardaleFTW's picture

I posted this in the 2019 thread but I thought everyone should hear it....

Got bored at work and did a little research on the real definition of success in recruiting.

Dabo has never had a top 6 class with Clemson. His formula has always been to sign small classes with high quality players. Seems to have been working out pretty well for him and Clemson.

While the media and everyone will tell you that your success in recruiting is the rank next to your team's name, I am here to argue that your success in recruiting is based off the average rating per commit.

Ohio State's average rating per commit (92.28) is 3rd in the country behind UGA (93.61) and Bama (94.25). As far as I'm concerned, Ohio State has the 3rd best class in the country.

Don't let ESecPN and other recruiting outlets fool you, quality>quantity

It's a beautiful day in Columbus, Ohio... and TTUN still sucks.

HS
analyticalguy's picture

To refine it a bit more - it isn't all just the average. If one Program had 3 5-stars and 15 4-stars for an 18-player class, and another had 3 more-or-less equal 5-stars and 15 more-or-less equal 4 stars, but also five 3-stars for a total class of 23 players, the second program would have a lower average, but I don't think anyone would say the first program's class is the better of the two. So it's rally making sure you get a bunch of top guys, especially ones that fit your system and your needs, keeping them, and developing them.

HS
Spartan13's picture

The difference is most players don't leave early at Clemson. They should have lost basically their entire front 7 coming into this year but they all came back, a couple turning down being a 1st rounder. OSU under Meyer has seen most players leave early and some who should come back leave early. If Garrett Wilson, Zach Harrison, and a couple others end up leaving early then you should be prepared by having a bigger 2020 class and so on.

HS
northernchild's picture

The reason having a larger class can be better is that the evaluations are noisy; you have a higher probability of actually having x-star players by having more of them.

I haven't seen anything on the Rutgers kid he would be a great addition.

What does Enokk Vimahi bring to the table? He’s not college ready so he’d need at least a year to develop. And then he’d be gone after a year anyway. So he will not play a snap in a meaningful game for three years.

You don't like the idea of having a talented OL on the team at the ages of 22-24? It also hasn't been officially decided whether Vimahi will go on his mission while in college. He and his family want to see how the year goes and then decide. Not too many OL play at OSU their first two years anyway. Waiting one more after that shouldn't be a big deal.

If he does go on his mission the clock will begin ticking and he will have 5 years of eligibility from that date. The two years he is gone will not count towards scholarship but he still must complete his playing time within 5 years. Meaning when he comes back he will only have 2 years left.

Are you sure about this?  I have been reading in various places that the two years spent on his mission trip will not count toward his years of eligibility.  He could be a freshman next year, leave for two years on his mission, and then still have 3 more years (4 if he red-shirted his freshman year) after returning.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding.

That's not how it works. The NCAA has a rule in place that allows for players going on a religious mission to return with full eligibility. They have the same rule for military athletes. He should have 4 years left to play if he redshirts this season and then leaves.

Ok. I could be off. When they were explaining it on the BM5 podcast that was my understanding but I admit I could have easily misunderstood.

Be more informed before you start spreading nonsense and misinformation. Clearly wrong. I don’t get why people like you would add something as if it’s a fact when it isn’t true and you clearly don’t know what you are talking about. Spreading that stuff just gets me annoyed because it leads to others doing the same. And you can say I’m being harsh and such but just don’t add that stuff if you don’t know. A problem with our world today is we state things as fact when we don’t know the right information.

Ok chill out. Take a deep breath the sky is not falling. That was how interpreted it and I still haven’t seen anything to contradict it. And in no way did I intend to spread false info. Someone pointed out that I could be wrong. I accepted and apologized. Really dude all will be ok. All is well. Not a bid deal. We have way bigger things to get upset about.

I’m fine it’s just irritating when people state something as fact when they clearly don’t know what they are talking about. Just don’t state it as such unless you are a 100%. And it is wrong

He's the 7th ranked guard in the nation. He brings to the table being the 7th ranked guard in the nation. Whether he goes on his mission or not is irrelevant.

With the little bit of skepticism we had coming into the week, I have to believe today was best case scenario. Good wrap to this class! Lots of pieces to like.
