Ohio State Linebacker Keandre Jones Transferring to Maryland

Best of luck, indeed.  I still remember that glorious day that both he & Dwayne Haskins transferred from Maryland to the good guys.  Times flies.

HS

Is he eligible? Not sure he graduated and if he’s already enrolled and taking classes he may redshirt of file waiver.

HS
Stoicpaisano's picture

Jones wasn’t listed in the athletic department’s autumn commencement press release, so he’s not a graduate. I’m betting he will pursue some sort of waiver to avoid sitting out 2019.

agreed. and i think he'll have success. i'd like to have seen him have a better chance to show something on the field. i'm not sold on werner or borland.

Agreed, Werner and Borland are NOT OSU caliber LBs, good guys, good football players, not OSU LBs.

Here's the thing, if he was better than either, wouldn't he have been playing? Maybe he has the energy and athleticism, but can't read a play? There has to be some reason he's still playing backup. Either way, here's to hoping he excels in the future.

HS

You would think, but that isn't how it worked out with Brendan White at safety.  And by all means, I hope it goes well for him at Maryland.

It comes down to... who decides whom should be playing?  Ultimately, it comes down to the coach.  I won't delve into whether it's the position coach or the head coach or some combination.  Sometimes, it's a fine line (e.g.  Haskins versus Burrow) as to who should start.  It will be interesting to follow his progress.  If he is successful, it will certainly open up discussion on the ability of a certain ex-LB coach regarding his ability to make the best decision on who should have started and the coaches' ability to develop his players.  There is probably no absolute right or wrong, but it will be fun to discuss what should/could have been!

Too be fair, Urban used the term "effort" and "team player" too much. Borland and Werner were those guys. He showed loyalty to guys when better options were available. I get Borland has experience but it looked like he lost a step after the injury. Jones had speed at LB and made plays when he saw the field. He was named ST player of the week multiple times and saw no PT. I'd take the guy with speed covering Rondale Moore over Werner.

Additionally Jones was behind Harrison, our best LB last year and they should have attempted a switch to the other side to compete with Werner. I know coming in Jones was only about 210-215lbs and he needed to add some muscle to play LB but maybe the switch from Fickell to Davis stunted his growth on the field.

HS
BuckeyePat's picture

Stop it lmao. 99% of these forums comments are fans assuming things they MAY not know. We go off what we think and opinion. And my OPINION is Jones was 10 times the athlete Werner was.

Have a great day

I know you’re being sarcastic to make a point, but based on the poor performance of the starting LBs, I think it legit begs the question of why other guys were not given sustained opportunities. The obvious example is how Brendon White sat the bench all season only to come in by sheer alignment of abnormal circumstances, and show immediately that he should have been playing all year. We don’t know what Jones could have done bc he was never given a chance. Given that the D coaching staff from last year is all gone now (LJ aside), I get the feeling Day didn’t much care for their decisions either.

HS
BuckInNashville's picture

Guys

even bill davis said that schiano’s defense was extremely complex for college players. Let’s see what less complexity and a new position coach can do for the position group. Also, with a new scheme and new position coach, every guy should regard it as a great opportunity to show what he’s got. Obviously K Jones still didn’t see that as an opportunity - OR was following Locksley to MD which he was prepared to do three years ago.

I'm rather hoping that he tweeks his ankle the week before the Ohio State game and has to sit it out.  Nothing too serious, just sitting out one game as a precaution!

HS

I hope he enjoyed his time at Ohio State. He was originally committed to Maryland, so I'm hoping he got value out of being here for 3 years - being around supreme athletes. I had high hopes for Keandre.

Can't say enough in support of this comment. All accounts I read said he was an absolute beast in workouts and weightroom, and a guy that was always positive and focused in the locker room. His presence will be missed, but my hope is that he balls out hard for the twerps and the few years of not getting hit as much as some of the other guys will make him fresh to catch on somewhere and have at least 3-5 years in the league. HS

The only ill will I have in this situation is that he never really got a chance to prove himself, despite the god awful LB play this season.  Almost wish there was an additional BS targeting call to give him the same shot Brendan White got in the secondary.

Figured that is where he was going.  I really wanted to see him get more of a chance here, I thought he deserved it.  But best of luck at Maryland.

Werner is actually fairly athletic and fast, but he isn’t the best tackler and does a poor job taking on and shedding blocks. Outside of Moore, he covered some slots pretty well. I’d bet he runs better than a 4.8. No arguments about Borland though. His speed is a liability outside of the tackles.

HS
BUCKfutter's picture

just to clarify, i have no doubt werner would run far faster than a 4.8.

and, about 10 years ago. i could still probably hit sub-5 but my quads would pop out of my hips afterward.

I really would have liked to have seen more of Keandre in the rotation.  I think that 2 out of the 3 starters from last year's squad were definite liabilities and thought that Keandre should've been given more opportunities at Ohio State.  Best of luck at Maryland.

HS
ChazBuckeye's picture

This sucks! IMHO he was by far better than Borland and Werner. Still wondering why he was regulated to only special teams. Jones was better than both those guys...

Good luck KJ! Sad to see you go.

Sad to see him go. Unrealized potential. Best of everything young man. Many of us wish you the best. When we were so deficient at that position last year he didn't get a fair shot. Favoritism can be very ugly and unfair. Thank God for the overdue changes.
Best man, huh... Never saw the best part.

HS

Kid had great HS film/was very well coached in HS. That said, I'd love to hear the basis of all the opinions in this thread that he will become "elite" other than "Bill Davis sucks, it's obvious!!!!".

HS
buckeyenut74's picture

Wish he would’ve let Al Washington coach him, who knows though, maybe Washington already talked to him. Oh well, I wish him well regardless.

HS
stxbuck's picture

But WHY would Al Washington make a difference-other than "He's not Bill Davis"I don't care if people think this, just justify opinion with some credible observations-.

HS
mmp15f's picture

Linebacker play was just poor during Davis's 2 seasons. Our linebackers didn't seem to read & react to plays well under Davis compared to how they looked under Fickell. Obviously I think Schiano's scheme played a part in that, but I still felt, especially this past season, that our linebackers (besides Harrison) frequently made bad reads.

I think the majority of the fanbase, including myself, thinks that Washington will do a better job teaching that aspect of the game. I assume Mattison will play a part in coaching the linebackers during practice as well, and he's definitely coached some good linebacker units.

That's my justification on why I feel the coaching change will make a difference. I think a lot of others just have the belief that the linebacker play can't possibly be worse this coming season, and that's probably true to some extent

HS
BbBnD's picture

Mostly because it’s hard to imagine a coach taking so many blue chip receruits and making them look below average. To put it shortly, it would be difficult to do worse than Davis.

HS
Stoicpaisano's picture

It will be interesting to see how he fits in at Maryland. They return a pair of two-year starters in Brooks and Davis. I suspect they’ll look to Jones to replace Tre Watson, himself a grad transfer (Illinois) who was 2nd team All-BIG.

That said, LB coach Matt Barnes is now in Columbus and MD hasn’t filled the slot.

Buckeye Chuck's picture

Too bad. When he got into games in a mop-up role, he looked like a promising athlete who was just waiting his turn like so many have before him, but he seemed to play even less this season than in 2017 even though you'd think we'd be trying anything and everything to fix our LB issues.

I'm always going to wonder if it was just a case of him getting into the doghouse with a particular coach.

I hate to see a player with this much talent leave the team.  IMO he deserved to start all of last year and should have,  he is way more athletic and faster than Werner and Borland.  I absolutely wish him the best though.

I pray that our LB play will be back to the silver bullet standard this season.

As long as "Twinkle" tuf borland and "Pathetic Play" pete werner don't get the start over the more talented, athletic, higher ranked recruits of ours we should be fine.
