Well, it's not like Harbaugh can develop one on his own, so he may want Jackson to head up there...

Actually, that would be Miami.

Maybe.  Or maybe grad transfers and other cf players are looking at options nobody had before them -- and taking advantage of them. Kids who have sat for 2+ years (or longer) want one shot at playing and they are taking that option. If they don't have to sit out, and their coaches have had the "come to Jesus" (or did not bother to) meeting with them like Day presumably had with Tate .....they leave.

I wouldn't overthink this.   We've had our kids leave too, and nothing was rotten at the core.

VT - Josh Jackson was recruited by Beamer.  Maybe he doesn't like Fuentes' system.

I think you nailed it.  Has nothing to do with programs having issues but simply that players are not as locked in at having to stay where they started and having to wait a year to play if they leave.  Especially if I know I am not a likely candidate to be looked at for the NFL if I stay where I am at because the playing time will simply not be there.  Or I just want one last chance at glory before I hang them up.

I don't buy one goddam drop of gas in the state of Michigan!

Reading The Key Play validates this take.  They had a RS freshman come in and essentially take over.  Jaskson still has 2 possibly 3 years left.

The offseason is the longest season.

I disagree (at least in Penn State's case). They have 11 players in the transfer portal. 6 of them are underclasman and the others are upcoming Juniors. That's a culture issue.

EDIT: After looking at VT's transfers, 7 of them are underclassman and the rest are Juniors.

Holy s**t.....thanks for pointing that out about PSU.   Geez, 3 or 4 guys I can see.  Not 11.

The grass is a lot greener when you are freshman or sophomore. If a non-QB isn't happy w/ their role/PT/prospects thereof after two or three years on the team, I can understand transferring.

It is weird that the starting QB is transferring.  Was he told he would not get to play?  That does not make much sense.

Either he's joining the hot market for QB transfers or VaTech has serious problems.

Got replaced as the starter mid-year

Only because he broke his leg.

Yes, weird...he was the starter and best qb on the rooster. This is not  PT move.

From ESPN:

He was Virginia Tech's starting quarterback for all of 2017 and the first three games of 2018 before breaking his left leg and missing the rest of the season.

Ryan Willis played well in his absence...

Although it seems like Jackson should have been able to regain his starting job...

Ryan Willis 2018 stats (10 starts/4-6 record):
CMP:213 ATT:364 CMP%:58.5 YDS:2,716 AVG:7.5 TD:24 INT:9 LNG:67 RTG:138.0
Josh Jackson 2017 stats (13 games/9-4 record):
CMP:236 ATT:396 CMP%:59.6 YDS:2,991 AVG:7.6 TD:20 INT:9 LNG:70 RTG:135.2

Interesting backstory on Willis, from Wikipedia:

Willis came out of high school as a 3-star prospect, as rated by Rivals.com. He chose to play for Kansas over Wyoming, Illinois, Kansas State and Tulsa. In his first start at Kansas, a Big 12 conference game versus the Baylor Bears, Willis broke his career high in passing, throwing 158 yards, on 20 completions and 36 attempts, and one touchdown. In a near win versus the 15th ranked TCU Horned Frogs, Willis threw 20-41 passes for 203 yards and a touchdown.[1] He started the final 8 games of the season for the Jayhawks in 2015, completing 164 of 315 passes for 1,719 yards, 8 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.[1][2]

He played in seven games, starting two, in 2016, completing 72 of 117 yards for 811 yards, 3 touchdowns and 7 interceptions.[1][2]

In January 2017, it was announced that Willis was transferring to play for the Virginia Tech Hokies.[3] At Virginia Tech, Willis joined the team as a walk-on with no guarantee that he would make the team; but he did and spent the 2017 season sitting out due to NCAA transfer rules.

Serious question- how many games has a QB recruited by Harbaugh started at Michigan?  I can't think of any and I don't want to look it up.

They were a declining during Beamer’s last four seasons. Hadn’t seen a 10-win season since 2011. Clemson got better and Va Tech got worse.

Wow surprised to see this. Followed JJ very closely as he attended the same HS as my daughter. Started as a RS Frosh at VaTech and only was replaced due to season ending injury. 2 maybe 3 years of eligibility left. Good run/pass QB...Harbaugh never even went after him. ttun was looking for pro-style then.

He will be snapped up...unlike like most of the TPers he has game and starter experience.

College football free agency period. This can’t end well. But it did give us a great QB so I guess it’s all good?  Maybe a couple great linebackers also this year would be nice.

Teams will adapt.  I think teams will oversign knowing that a number of non productive scholarship kids will go into portal.  Once they do at the end of the semester teams can say bye-bye.  So if kids are serious about transferring they’ll go.  If they’re only exploring interest they have risk of being cut.

The downside would be if kids transferred in groups trying to form super squads.  Say some Texas A@M kids join with some Georgia talent to go to LSU to form a team to take down Alabama.  So maybe they will end up applying limits or something. (Either leaving a team or how many a team can pick up)

It’s nice if some moron goes off about not being elite because a player misses a class, kids can file to the exit sign.  Say good bye to coaching abuses.

Well...can't they sort of do that now when they commit in the first place?  We always hear how all these guys are package deals, and they rarely ever end up that way.

HS

Not really.  Universities could block other coaches from contacting kid.  That is why the portal is so freeing.

I'm saying before they commit anywhere and have to transfer.  The top 100 kids all know each other from the camp circuits.  They can work together then with no limitations and all go to one school...but they don't.  Even though I think all 28 of Alabama's signees are in the ESPN 300, so there's that.

Gotcha.  A lot has to break right in either scenario.  But it’s more likely that proven commodities in college are more likely to be desirable because they had shown college ability on the field and in the classroom.  The coaches would have to have a need yadda, yadda.  Probably pretty unlikely now that I think about it more.  Yet, the Bishop Gorman reunion at Miami is a conversation starter anyway.

Does Ohio State have interest in any of the PSU transfers? Some of those names were also on our board at one point?

HS
TheBadOwl's picture

I believe that Penn State can block transfers within the B1G.

If they did (and if OSU wanted one of their guys) I'm sure they'd get some public push-back, but hey, you never know.

When I walked in this morning and saw the flag was at half mast I thought, "Alright, another bureaucrat ate it." but then I saw it was Li'l Sebastian. Half mast is too high. Show some damn respect.
