CBS Sports Has Dwayne Mocked to the Bengals

Not sure why, at first glance, I thought of 'mock' in a non-NFL connotation.

Maybe the word "Bengals" threw me.

HS
RunEddieRun1983's picture

The bengals are in a pretty big time disarray, which is strange because they have a world of talent on that roster.

However, with a new coach at the helm, a change at QB could be exactly what they do, and that would make sense, but with Dalton on the roster, and Haskins being the young gun, can that franchise withstand a "QB controversy?"

You know every fan in that stadium from the first snap of the first pre-season game until he goes in will chant for Haskins to get in the game.

Oh I've for sure seen enough of Andy Dalton to know he's not the guy they need, but he's also not a basement dweller in terms of the NFL QB scene.

He's very middle of the road, which some teams would kill just to get a middle of the road guy, but he's not a sensational player at all.

Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.

As along time (since their inception) and long suffering Bengals fan nothing would make me happier than for them to draft Haskins.  I've been wishing for Lewis and Dalton's departure for several years - one down and one to go.  You're right that the Bengals could do worse than Dalton but he's never going to lead them to the promised land.  Then again as a youngster I remember sitting in the upper deck at Riverfront Stadium watching Virgil Carter run around at QB., so I guess it could be worse.

HS
RunEddieRun1983's picture

I totally get that. I don’t have a dog in the hunt since I’m not a bengals fan, but it’s for sure a symbiotic relationship as I think the bengals could do well with Haskins and he could for sure wind up in situations much worse

I don't know how much talent is actually on that roster.  I feel like if it was that superior it would still overcome poor coaching once in a while.  Instead, a couple years without the playoffs, and a bunch of years with no playoff wins.  Even the Chargers got a playoff win this year.  AJ Green is fantastic.  Dunlap and Adkins are pretty good.  After that meh.

As much crap as the giants have taken for not taking Darnold, I cant see them passing on Haskins.  I do like this guys pick for Cleveland though, I liked that OT from Oklahoma. If Haskins ends up in Cinci though that would be cool for bengals fans and an upgrade from Dalton for sure.

NOOOOOOOOOO!!! That means the Redskins (AKA Deadskins), who have practically destroyed every quarterback who has played for them after RGIII, would take him, Lord, I wouldn't wish that on anyone. Let them destroy Kyler Murray, not Dwayne. Their organization is absolutely the worst. The.Worst. And this is from the wife of a long time home grown disgusted Redskins fan who barely watches their games anymore.

It'd would need kind of cool to see Haskins stay in Ohio, but if the Bengals really want him they're going to have to trade up. No way the consensus top QB in the draft lasts until pick 11.

4 QBs went in the top 10 last year and Haskins is better than all of them. Why no love???

HS
tcm1968's picture

Plenty of scenarios where he could be there at #11 and even still plenty of rumblings the Bengals are going to stick with Dalton.  I'll continue to say it.. it's a weird year for QB with all the teams taking QB1s the past 2 seasons and a bunch of those teams being in the top 15 again... Flacco is going somewhere. Nick Foles is going somewhere. Teams like the Bengals and Giants may decide to stick with their guys another season or 2.   You could have only 1 QB go in the top 12.. .it's possible..

And that's if you don't get a wildcard or two at QB. Klyer Murray could be the first QB off the board....

And no one should be shocked if the Giants decide to move on from Eli and take Jones from Duke. Eli Manning is still royalty in the Giants organization and the Manning family has deep ties to Cutcliffe ( Jones Coach at Duke).. that's an EASY transition to let Eli show Jones the ropes because they both had the same QB coach in college..

Go Bucks!

HS
DarrylJenks's picture

Mike Brown does not have the cahones to trade Dalton, let alone trade away draft picks to move up and get Haskins.  I think Young Simba will only move up the board after his pro day and combine.  Someone will have to move up to #1 or #2 to get him IMO, Bengals will not do that.

HS

Yeah someone is trading up to get him. No way he is still sitting at 11

HS
ELJTSA76's picture

I’d bet that the ‘Skins trade up to #2 or #3 to draft Haskins, just ahead of the Raiders and Giants.

HS
Triv's picture

The Skins gave up 3 1s and a 2 to move up from 6 to 2 to draft RG3 and it blew up in their face. I can't see them mortgaging their future again to go from 15 to 2, which would likely cost them even more draft capital. SF isn't moving out of the top 10 for anything less than 2 future firsts and 2 future seconds, as well as a few additional picks in this draft imo.

HS
703Buckeye's picture

The Redskins ignored injury concerns associated with RG3 and paid for that. Haskins doesn't have those concerns and has plenty of talent. Washington REALLY needs to make a splash in this draft to re-energize a fanbase that has begun to turn its back on the team and ownership.

And those RG3 concerns are exactly why I DON'T want the Bengals to draft Kyler Murray. He's basically an RG3 waiting to happen.

HS
Steel City Buckeye's picture

Burfic would knock him out in practice before his first game.

HS
Dstacify's picture

Burfict I don't think is likely to even be on the team next year. He's had 3 concussions in the past year alone (7 in his career) and at this point should really begin to think about life after football. Plus all the coaches who vouched for him are gone (Marvin, Zim, and Guenther specifically). Zac Taylor owes absolutely no loyalty to Burfict and given that Burfict clashed with Teryl Austin last year I don't know if he's the type of player who responds very well to coaching changes. He was also ineffective when he did play last year so I'd say at this point he's officially more trouble than he's worth. Tobin has hinted that they want to get faster at the LB position to get more with the times and Burfict is anything but fast. I'd be shocked if #55 is back next season tbh.

11 Strong.

HS
Triv's picture

I just don't think they'll be willing to give up the draft capital required to go from 15 all the way up to 2. You're essentially banking on the fact that your team is only a QB away from competing, since the Redskins are in the bottom half of the league in cap space as well so the draft is the only place they can really improve.

HS
OSU_JD's picture

As a Redskins fan in exile (until the fall of the Snyder Regime), I hope Haskins is not drafted into that nightmare.

HS
Dstacify's picture

Mike Brown is not in charge of the draft room anymore (hasn't been for a long time). Duke Tobin is kind of running the show there now (and he also recently publically stood by Dalton). I think if Haskins fell to 11 the Bengals would be intrigued by him but the reality is Dalton is far from the source of the Bengals' problems right now. They need to upgrade the O-line and LB positions significantly (and we know Haskins doesn't do great behind spotty protection).

HS
MAVBuck's picture

CBS does a mock draft about every other day. It's to the point its not even entertaining. Tomorrow they may have him falling to the Patriots followed by him going to the Giants as everyone thinks.

HS
CTBuckeyeFan's picture

4 of the Top 5 and 9 of the Top 15 are DL?  Did Skip Bayless create this?

HS
Triv's picture

Barring trades, the top 4 picks almost SHOULD be DL. Bosa, Quinnen Williams, and Josh Allen are going to go 1-3, and the Raiders DL was such a shit show last year that they almost certainly will take one too, be it Gary, Oliver, Clelin Ferrell, etc.

This draft is absolutely loaded with DL talent. I'm sure 9 of the top 15 WON'T happen due to team needs. But in terms of taking best player available it's not out of the question.

Sorry Urban, Woody is still my favorite

HS
CTBuckeyeFan's picture

Allen, Williams and Bosa may be the 3 Top prospects in the draft but outside of them I'd want my team to look elsewhere that high.  Rashan Gary at 4?  Even John Gruden isn't that stupid, right?  The Jets should be looking at offense as well, they have the worst talent on O in the NFL.  After all this plays out, they then think Cleveland goes OG with Greedy and Murphy sitting there too?  Did they miss the memo that Ray Farmer was fired?  Not sure who Will Brinson is, but I just thought CBS would have a higher standard than this.

HS
Triv's picture

Don't get me wrong, I don't agree with the Browns pick at 17 being a fringe Guard/Tackle. But it's been reported by just about every major media outlet that this is the best DL draft in years, maybe ever. It likely won't be 9 out of 15 obviously, but the DL talent in the top of this draft is insane.

Also, in regards to Gary. His production didn't match his potential at UM because he was playing out of position. He's going to absolutely kill the combine and I'd bet my 401k he goes top 10 barring injury or scandal, and it's a toss up on top 5.

Sorry Urban, Woody is still my favorite

HS
CTBuckeyeFan's picture

. But it's been reported by just about every major media outlet that this is the best DL draft in years, maybe ever.

Thats why I think this mock is off base, especially at the top.  The dropoff is much steeper at positions that aren't DL, so grabbing the #1 OT,WR,CB..etc then the #5 or 10 DL is a smarter move imo.

I actually hope the Raiders take Gary level players with all their picks, will be great karma after they celebrated the NFL screwing the Browns in Oakland this past season.

HS
Triv's picture

I'm just hoping the Browns can get a top 10 caliber DT at 17. We are a DT and some depth away from having one of the best DLs in football

I hope Gary runs the 40 at the combine. I've been arguing with some UM fans that there is no way in he'll come close to 4.5 that UM said he ran. He is good, really good but I've watched him intently the games I've seen him play and watched average speed runners pull away from him in the open field.

HS
CTBuckeyeFan's picture

Wait, those jamokes are saying 290 lb Gary runs a 4.5 in the 40?  Holy shit their delusion knows no bounds.

HS
Triv's picture

Yeah, he allegedly ran a 4.57 in 2017 when he was playing at 280. I'm guessing that's similar to the board Urban kept in the locker room that had like 4 players running in the 4.2s. If I had to guess, Gary will run in the mid 4.7s

Sorry Urban, Woody is still my favorite

HS
allinosu's picture

He ran a 4.85 at the Nike at a lighter weight. Just guessing but I think it will be hard for him to be that fast.

A simple statement about a potentially complicated matter: Taylor could work with Dalton for years to come or fall in love with a prospect in this year's draft or the next and choose to transition.

Duke Tobin, the Bengals director of player personnel, backed that up earlier this week.

"We're very comfortable with Andy," Tobin said. "We think he's got a number of years left. We feel like we can win with him. But with any position group, we don't just throw away the whole draft board at a group just because we're satisfied with who we have. We'll evaluate them and look at them and see if there's an opportunity to add a guy at every position."

The offseason is the longest season.

HS
TeddyKGB's picture

Mock drafts are useless, just meant to get clicks. They always change. But regardless, no way Haskins goes to the Bengals. He won't be available that long and Mike Brown is too cheap to trade up that far.

HS
logamaniac's picture

Trading draft picks won’t cost him anything but potential wins while saving him first round contracts in subsequent years.

HS
BuckeyeBen7.7's picture

Andy ain’t perfect, but he’s above average. This team has far bigger needs than QB

HS
FortMeyer's picture

He will not drop that far. QB's are too valued for teams to not take a chance on a potential gem.

HS
CTBuckeyeFan's picture

I agree, in a world where Josh Allen gets drafted #7 overall there is no way Haskins drops past 6.

HS

Agreed. I don't see Haskins making it past the Jags at all unless they choose to get really adventurous and experimental and draft Kyler Murray instead.

HS
buckeyearchie76's picture

If he is there at number 1, I think the Bengals would at least consider drafting him.  The Bengals are fighting more than just trying to win football games.  They have a 65,000 seat stadium and they averaged around 41,000 this year in attendance,  They have hired a new, young coach from the Rams.  He is from the McVay coaching staff and that was a damn exciting team this year.  They need something to get Cincinnati excited about Bengals football again.  And drafting Haskins would be a start.  All that being said, I really don't see the Bengals landing him.  But, if he is there-----who knows?

I know. So many people over there want 5'9", 180 lb Kyler Murray instead, calling him a generational talent (which is what Haskins is). That kid is too small to be playing QB in the NFL (and would get absolutely murdered playing in the AFC North as opposed to the soft-as-silk defenses of the Big 12) and the fact that he's a runner only makes his projected long-term shelf-life even shorter. I will be pissed off beyond belief if Murray is the pick at 11.

I would love this, but don't tease me. This might make me become a little more invested in them than I have been. I have been a "show me" fan for the past few years because I have gotten my hopes up before and they have stuck the dagger in SO MANY TIMES. It would be very un-Bengal-like to do this.

I agree with all of you who say that Andy Dalton is not our number one problem, but I also think that we would need a much better QB to take us to the promised land.

One note--I used to hope for the Bengals to win the Super Bowl, but I don't any more. This is because I believe the world would end if that happened and I am not going to wish that on the rest of you. Just trying to be a good citizen...

Robbed? In what sense? Burfict screwed you by taking a cheap shot. Jeremy Hill screwed you by not going down and fighting for a meaningless extra yard. Pacman screwed you by being Pacman. Roethlisberger couldn't even lift his arm to throw the ball. Yet your D gifted him 30 yards. That was an internal fail...had nothing to do with getting robbed.

HS
CincyBuck's picture

Off the cusp, I’d say: (1) a Steelers TD that wasn’t a catch (which the NFL later admitted); (2) an obvious and missed spearing call, leading to a turnover and our player getting knocked out of the game (which the NFL later admitted); (3) failure to penalize a coach for literally yanking on an opposing player’s braids for no reason; and (4) calling a critical penalty on Pac, instead of on the Steelers coach that was blatantly and obviously violating several rules (which, again, I believe the NFL later admitted).  That’s just off the top of my head.  I’m sure there were others that I’m forgetting.

Let’s be real though, the raiders weren’t a signed Mack away from doing anything this year.

Pocketing those first round picks was the smartest thing they’ve done since mortgaging everything on a coach that the game has passed up.

HS
