I wouldn't think it would be a guy who has potential to play. Most transfers are guys who have been recruited over and understand the chances are slim of cracking the 2 deep. Again, coaches recruit with an idea of what attrition is coming. LB was such a shitshow this year, any of them worth their salt see there's a new staff, with no preference towards anyone. This spring should be wide open on the defense. Competition everywhere across the board.
Here is a list of players in the portal. I find it strange it’s only avalable to school admins but yet here it is and on this link. There are a few interesting names. Lamont Wade from Penn State being one of them.

I think it's kinda crazy to see some highly rated recruits on this list (Lamont Wade, Luke Ford, Jaelen Phillips, etc etc.) and some players who even had some success on their old teams (Shawn Robinson, Juwan Johnson, etc.) The transfer portal has in a way created a second recruitment process but this time during college in a way?
Absolutely. I assume they had to under perform, got lost in a certain system or just think they need an extra push by some other coach. The ones you mentioned alone OSU would have loved to have at the time.
FWIW, Ford is transferring to be near his grandfather who is pretty ill. Certainly not due to playing time as he was slotted to start for UGA who utilizes their TEs.
I wouldn't mind if OHIO STATE gave PSU WR Juwan Johnson, and UT OL Drew Richmond a look-see.
16-2 is SWEET!
What linebacker are you talking about????
The portal can only be accessed by school administrators.
"You're the patron saint of the totally effed" - Hot Tub Time Machine
Where did you see this (linebacker of Ohio State's?)?
Plenty to discuss already this offseason, I get it. So discuss it, and provide details to the posts...instead of one-off comments without reference, or worse yet the one-off comment with a link (aka link and run).
Dont mean to single you out, OP...but this isn't leading a discussion.
I'm not around that much, running exhausted and lost...
I didn't see a name just that a LB is looking. Was hoping to get that info here. It's another great purpose for forums. Not trying to start rumors
Thank you Urban Meyer and Gene Smith
Where did you see that a linebacker is looking? In a forum, article or from a friend?
I believe media can see who is in the portal so if a linebacker was in the portal, I'm sure it would have been reported by someone. Probably a rumor you might be hearing about.
I saw a UFO once.......it told me to have a goodyear!
I believe all that, but details help the cause.
This is exactly how rumors start
Oh really? Yes just like the rumor of Tate Martell transferring a couple weeks ago that was proven to be accurate? Again not here to start rumors but here for information about OSU. Sorry u are bothered by "rumors."
Plenty of other rumors have spread like wildfire from posts just like this one. Some turn out true, some not so much.
That being said i remember seeing Brownings name pop up as speculation. Not sure if thats what youre referring to or not but I dont think its anything more than a fan seeing a top player who might be frustrated with playing time
Looks like the majority on this thread handled the rumor responsibly enough and realized I was just seeking more info; while others seemed agitated for asking.
Rumor keandre Jones could look to transfer
Home to Maryland I would bet if that rumor is true.
Fields of Dreams
Would make sense considering Browning, Werner, Mitchell, Pope, Gant all likely making pushes and having more years of eligibility.
I want a fall Saturday in Ohio Stadium..
rumor or speculation?
New Day for OSU. Same noon for TTUN.
I wouldn't be surprised, he should have been playing this season. Way better player than Borland and Werner.
Based on...? High school highlight tapes / recruiting rankings?
Couldn’t be worse in coverage or getting off a block, for sure.
Braving the long dark of the offseason
Based on the fact that Borland and Werner looked like FCS players out there all season and it's not likely possible that Jones could have been any worse.
Thanks Moneymike...I guess I'd be glad it's an older player and not one of the newer 5stars if this turns out to be true.
Only Buckeyes in there right now are QB Curtis and DL Barrow but it takes up to 48 hrs for a new name to show up. Guess we will find out soon enough.
48 hours for a new name to show up?!? State-of-the-art system the NCAA has there.
The 48 hours is how long the school administration has from the initial request to get it in the system.
Barrow took a medical retirement.
So if the portal is only available to school admin, how is social media and the public so aware of all the names in there? There’s no sort of obligation of privacy for the student athletes?
What obligation would there be for privacy? No information is shared outside of a name?
"Come on, you sons of b!tches! Do you want to live forever?" -- Dan Daly, WWI
If a student athlete wishes to transfer and change schools, their information should be held private. Just like injuries. You guys all compare this to changing jobs. No one needs or deserves it to be public when they are looking for a different job.
The whole point of the portal is to basically put up a flag that says I'm looking for other schools.
This isn't national security or health records. I'm not sure why we should hold it private, in fact I don't think it should be since the player's school knows and all the other schools know.
People leak the info. The portal is not public information by nature, so it is intended to respect athlete privacy. However, since it’s so easy to leak it anonymously through media members or one’s own social media, the info tends to get out there. Especially regarding the big name guys like Martell and Fields
I know I’m being naive with the question. But what kind of people are being hired by the universities that feel the need to leak this info to media?
Assistant coaches trade information with media members all the time. Media members may at times talk more positively about an assistant or mention them to boost profile.
It's me guys..I'm still a little salty that they let Billy D go.../s
I imagine a few more OSU will guys will jump in the next few months. Could be some kids are waiting to see how the NCAA rules, overall. If they just hit 'yes to all', it will be free agency on steroids.
Jaelan Phillips is a big name out there. Looks like he is leaving UCLA bc of injury though
The portal is a double edged sword, it for sure helps the students exercise the rights they have, but it definitely keeps fans on edge if they see a name they didn't expect, or if a guy you thought was going to contribute shows up...
Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.
The other edge of the sword is that if there is no market for the student the coach can cut the scholarship without the “abuse” label.
The soldier is my son. The school I gone to didn’t teach much grammar.
I'm not really sure what purpose this portal is serving other than giving fans something new to obsess on. It's not like players were really having any trouble transferring before now.
The most "loud mouth, disrespect" poster on 11W.
I think the thought, at least by those not directly involved, was that the coaches had too much power to block x player from x school...
Somehow, the belief is that this portal negates that to some degree, but from my understanding, coaches can still block players from particular schools? I don't know enough about the situation at this point to know if that's true, or not.
In the past, coaches had to request permission from the transferring players school to contact them I believe. The portal allows open contact with any recruit in the portal. It's getting a ton of press this season obviously as it's the first year its been around, but it was a big step in the right direction for student-athlete's right.
Coaches blocking transfers is another thing that absolutely needs to be done away with though.
Sorry Urban, Woody is still my favorite
Exactly. Previously, transferring was an awkward deal for all parties. Schools had to figure out a player was interested in transferring, many times through a third party, and then the interested school had to contact the current school. Sometimes the current school would block a bunch of schools. It was basically a mess. The transfer portal makes it clear who is interested in transferring and gives players the best opportunity to view all possible options. The portal is making it seem like tons of guys are transferring, but this happens every year. The change is that its transparent so we see it publicly in real time.
I believe it allows other schools to contact player without tampering.
Looking at Lamont Wade, I think he was down to us and PsU. With no real corners in this class, any chance he would be able to get immediate availability (at this point, I'd almost bet the chances are better than not they way the NCAA is going) and sign with us? I know we are in on quite a few highly rated DB's in 2020 class, but doesn't do us much good the next couple of years.
"I was tired of trying to work my way around the back so I just ran him over.” -Joey Bosa, PSU 10/25/14
Next years CBs: Arnette back, Okudah/Wade/williamson 3rd year in the program, Johnson / Banks 2nd year, plus Riep who was a top 25 corner prospect and moved to safety (but is buried), cam brown who was moved from WR. If L Wade were to transfer, it would almost work out better if he had to sit a year.
Everything that happens-good and bad-should motivate you to be persistent. ~JT
Yup the present depth at corner isnt a concern but we need to load up in 2020
Lamont Wade was a safety at PSU and he was awful. That is why he is transferring.
No. We don't need him.
Kendall should transfer to a Big Ten West school because then he'll get to play against teams like Iowa and Wisconsin, both of which use basic defenses. Somehow I think he would get basically roughed up against those teams, but at least it wouldn't be an exotic beat down.
I thought he was transferring to WVU?
Looks like Moneymike was right -it is Keandre Jones.
