I'm ok with him transferring, I'm not ok with all this high school bull crap. If you want to leave, then leave. Do it gracefully and move on. It's called being an adult.
I couldn't agree more!
Agreed. Hope he does well in Miami, but I wouldn't mind if the next time I hear about him is in September.
A quality post garners responses from quality food, apparently.
Pick up your feet, turn your corners square! And DRIVE DRIVE DRIVE!!!
I just want this to be over. Martell has moved on, the OSU program has moved on. We should too.
Already there...all in the rear view (objects may be smaller than they appear).
They already appear pretty dang small to begin with...
Come on Hove, if this is all in the rearview mirror, why you making "smaller" jokes... :)

Martell is gone... and I think there’s reasons beyond what we know.
I’m just really surprised at the public shade thrown by Quincy Avery... who coached Haskins and coaches Fields and is the link to why Justin came here.
Tate can do what he wants. It’s his life. I hope he succeeds at Miami.
This isn’t really about Tate, it’s about a QB coach unconnected to OSU throwing some public shade. There’s some kinda back story here, though.
You win with people.
And so forth...
9 Units Strong!
Very unprofessional a bad look for Avery. I can't believe he would throw shade at any quarterback, regardless of who that QB is. Work must be slow to even be concerned with what is going on.
Or maybe Martell and his pops have a reputation among QB whisperers./guru's...
Stay golden, Ponyboy.
Why is it unprofessional of him to say he doesn't think the existing Miami QB would have an issue with competition?
Agreed. I get that this isn't necessarily an explicit diss of Tate. But not sure why he feels the need to chime-in at all.
Because it is his industry.
BS. I'm sure there are thousands of tweets related to college football that he doesn't reply to (or whatever we call what he did). He had to realize this is a subtle dig at Tate -- essentially, saying his guy has nothing to worry about. That, or he's a moron. I think it's a bad look.
That said, I don't feel bad for Tate. He's been full of bad looks lately. He kind of deserves what he gets at this point.
Nah dude this is some cold shade being thrown there
Boy, I got vision and the rest of the world wears bifocals! - Butch Cassidy
He works with Jarren Williams as well. I can recall seeing a picture of them together.
Am I missing something here? How is Avery throwing shade?
Avery works with Jarren Williams, the prior tweet was some random dude tagging Jarren Williams and saying "lol" to the news that Martell was going to Miami. Avery says "I'm sure he's unbothered" in reference to Williams opinion of Martell becoming competition on his team...
Conext. It’s what’s called “subtweeting.”
Avery wasn’t asked his opinion on how Jarren Williams would approach Tate’s transfer. Had he been asked directly, no problem.
He saw Simone tweet Williams and inserted himself and his low key shade into the conversation. It’s most definitely shade.
Wasn't Williams transferring out anyway? At least I remember seeing clippings on it sometime in Dec
He was going to, then Richt talked him out of it. Guessing Richt told him he was retiring and Williams thought they could actually improve then.
Talk about tossing shade!
Avery's response is probably more a statement about Jarren Williams than it is about Tate
Avery's response is probably more a statement about Avery than it is about Tate
New Day for OSU. Same noon for TTUN.
Jarren Williams is in Tate's league talent-wise, he is going to have to win a battle there too. Tathan and his crew are so full of themselves, that they consistently overlook the fact that most higher-profile schools have uber-talented QB rooms. They are repeating the same mistake they made here, at Miami. If you want to be handed a starting spot, you go to L'ville, or better yet UNLV.
I firmly believe that with the Appalachian State coach going to Louisville, Tate missed out big time on not even considering this landing spot. They need a QB and this guys runs an offense perfect for Tate. Louisville does have some talent on the roster, too.
Tate would have put up some monster numbers in Satterfield's system. He was supposed to visit today or tomorrow, so it does seem like he had his mind set on the U for awhile. From afar it appears his sole reasoning was two of his boys are there and he likes the flash. To not even hear L'ville out, shows how immature and short-sighted these folks really are. I wonder how Daddy Tate made his money, for as bad as his decision-making has been in this situation.
Agree. I'm not sure this was the best situation to force himself into. In addition to Williams, Perry played most of the year for them and he's a redshirt freshman.
So your saying Martell should take his own advice and not swing and miss the second time??
I guess I don't see this as shade, really? Could it be that he's just saying that Williams isn't concerned about the competition? That doesn't have to be a shot at Tate. It could just mean that Williams believes in himself.
Avery inserted himself into a conversation that was not directed at him. He saw a tweet and subtweeted both Williams and Martell in it. Williams because he’s his guy and obviously Martell... as in, he’s not a real threat.
Meh, he's defending his client. I'd say it's open to interpretation. Everything said on twitter doesn't have to be shade.
That’s a fair angle & could be true. My perspective is that it is an unnecessary interjection, since Williams himself wasn’t out there speaking on the matter.
If Avery saying Williams is unconcerned with who he'll have to compete with for the starting QB job is considered throwing shade, would't Martell choosing Miami and applying for immediate eligibility because he believes he can walk in and start right away be throwing shade at Williams? Funny part to me is, Williams is younger than Martell so if Williams wins the job Tate's career at Miami ends before it starts.
If Williams wanted to say he was unconcerned about Tate coming to Miami, that's fine. For a "professional QB guru" to say it is a completely different thing. One is a professional and the other is a college QB. IMHO, Avery throwing himself into the conversation was unprofessional and in poor taste.
He gave his unsolicited opinion, that opinion wasn't defamatory towards Martell at all. No one asked his opinion on Ryan Day coaching Justin Fields either, was it unprofessional for him to share it? It's a huge reach to say Avery was throwing Shade at Martell here.
This thing with Martell imo is far from over because unlike with Burrow there hasn't been one not one OSU player wish Martell good luck on his way out the door. I'm shocked nobody has brought the aforementioned up that not player past or presently on the team or coaches have said anything as it pertain to Martell. Maybe I'm wrong or seeing this differently but it's very telling.
The silence is deafening.
Maybe the brotherhood only recognizes those consider to truly be brothers?
Tate always marched to the beat of his own drum so remember the old saying "if you don't have something good to say, then say nothing at all" because it seems to apply here.....
They also say the empty can rattles the most.

Sorry. I get carried away. Really looking forward to MetallicA in Cleveland in a couple weeks.
Maybe it's the sound of one hand clapping
I’m not on Twitter, but that is pretty damning if true. Cockiness grates on people though, so maybe that happened here.
I'm on Twitter a lot (some would say to much) and I follow almost every Buckeye player and I haven't seen one not even Haskins wish him good luck out the door to Coral Gables. I did see Haskins like Tate's announcement Tweet which imo makes things even weirder right??
That is a really interesting point. I hadn't noticed the silence from his former teammates. I agree that it's pretty telling.
Fields of Dreams
To be fair I think I've seen both Okudah and Werner reply to his post on IG saying good luck and that they will miss him. But ya definitely not like when Burrow left.
Couldn't agree more. I posted the same sentiment:
"I think that the other players on the team did some self governing. I think that the Tater tweets didn't sit well with some of them, just like it didn't sit well with the fans. I believe Tate lost the locker room, knew it, and that was the final straw for him.
I find it very interesting not a single player (that I know of since I am not a Twitter) step up and show some love to Tate."
Commented on Skull Session: Tate Martell Going to Miami, Whether or Not Ryan Day Will Call Plays, and Urban Meyer Talks Real Life Wednesday
There have been players that have wished him well, though it hasn’t been as vociferous as with Burrow.
didnt think about that...
Joe stayed and competed, and then left when he was (probably) told that he wasnt the guy.
I think there is a lot we don't know about the TM situation... did Day straight up tell him??? dude..you're going to be 2nd to Fields and we feel very confident he's eligible, or maybe even, we think Baldwin is ahead of you for what we want, go ahead and look? Without those conversations, I can see how his teammates are like oh, okay dude. Oh well. Good luck, good riddance, go bucks
So my question is, who was/is Tathan's roommate? Would he be wishing his roomie good luck? If not, extremely telling...
Tate's roommate was Pete Werner
Roommates or not -- I'm sure Werner will miss tackles more than he misses Tate -- hehehehe.
You sir I bet don't miss many opportunities in life I bet lol. Bravo this was great.
But on the topic. Nick Bosa left and everyone spoke up. Joe Burrow everyone spoke up. Tate Martell you could hear a pin drop.
Pete Werner did wish him well.
It’s a reach to say this is “shade”.
"Because I couldn't go for three"
Agreed! This is a coach going to bat for one of his guys. This is a pro-Jarren comment, not an anti-Tate comment.
An adult interjecting himself into a conversation he’s not a part of... when it’s well known Williams, Fields, Haskins are his guys. It’s subtweeting shade 101.
Granted, You have to speak Twitter to see how these things unfold and that’s not everyone’s forte.
An adult (with a vested interest in Jarren Williams' success) interjecting himself into a conversation (that Jarren Williams was tagged into by some random Twitter user). Subtweet? Sure, mildly at best. But- can't fault Avery standing up for his guy.
That’s fair. And as you note the subtweet has a context. He’s backing his guy and basically letting Tate know Williams ain’t scared.
Tate Martell is also an adult.
Nope, college kids are still as innocent as babies. When they make a mess of things, we are just supposed to laugh.
Not really, he responds to a tag & simply says his guy is “unbothered”. That statement is so vague any shade has to be inferred, which is literally “reaching”.
You could be right. And I don’t think it’s putting Martell in blast or going after him guns blazing. But most Twitter/social media subtweeting is subtle like that, often so people can deny it if confronted.
It’s a reach
I'm sure Tate is used to having to reach for things
Shandy is not beer
The competition in Miami will keep him on his toes
I’m over it already.
I can’t believe I just read through an article and comments regarding “shade” that may or may not have been thrown.
You're too stupid to have a good time. -Dalton
What is shade?
Better than an article about throwing shanties.
Josh Shamgosh is a damn good username.
Martell is still listed on the OSU website on the roster.
Is he in the email directory though?
Could you expect anything less from Tate? Did you watch the QB1 show? He showed his character as a classless douche on that show. THe family is the same way. Why would you expect he act any different now. Glad he is gone. I am in the camp that I wish he never were.
Thing is Tathan almost abandoned his brothers before this and had to be talked out of it by the coaching staff all the while the team and Meyer were going through the whole ZS/McMurphy shit.
Burrow was beloved, he battled like a warrior and only left after he and his family had a heart to heart with Urban. Burrow will always be a Buckeye but Tathan can go be a hurricane because I've already moved on from him. Let the Fields era begin.
Oooowe TraSmith4, you seemed to have heard the same scuttlebutt I did!
And as you said, while the TEAM was dealing with the Summer fiasco as a TEAM, they were also dealing with the forest fire threat of a Martell transfer.
Guess there’s no I in team, but with a rearranged M and an E, there’s Me; Lol!
Quincy Avery is currently in a Twitter battle with a guy who thinks it's ok to punch little kids.
Hey if you are for grown men punching 12 year old girls in the face we probably will never see eye to eye. https://t.co/sgpW4BFpm2

High and tight boo boo
Adults shouldn't tweet, let alone subtweet (how is that a real thing?).
Now get off my lawn.
Twitter is essentially another version of blog forums...
social media is all a commentary/revelation of our momentary inner monologue.
Every athlete at OSU has to wait their turn. Curtis Samuel is a freak and he had to wait behind Zeke. If you read McCall's comments yesterday, he mentioned having to sit behind a ton of freaks but that is what we do and it makes us better. Then you see Tate's actions.
It's basically impossible to reconcile Tate's words to all those even possibly more talented athletes that are waiting their turns and doing it with class and being honest with themselves. Hooker and Bosa are 2 of the most talented ever and waited they're turns. Martell can't lead a crew that way IMO. For awhile I think he did the tough stuff (for him anyway). But his words lately were not the words of a leader of this program and never will be, thankfully.
If Tate sits out a year...getting the starting job will not be easy. Dude should of taken his time and picked his spot with a degree in hand. I hate to say this...but starting to remind me of another Tate.
Justice delayed is justice denied....#FTP
Maybe it happens, but how come you do not seem to hear of the freaks transferring out of Bama. Yes, Hurts left recently, but that is a special circumstance. you don't hear of the #4 receiver or back leaving looking for playing time elsewhere like you see at other programs. How does Saban manage to keep things in house? (If he truly does)
Kendall Sheffield says hello.
They either don't to stay and win a title (also probs get told that only 1 year of playing time means they get drafted)....or they do and theres hardly any drama about it
Seriously?? Saban had not one, but two 5-star QB’s leave the program in the same year! I don’t think anyone has a problem with people looking to make sure they get to display and employ their talents (nor do they fault the coaches for continuing to stockpile talent)—it’s way the world works. But it’s all about the manner in which you exit. One thing you learn quickly in the business world—you never burn a bridge because you never know if you might need to use it again one day!
In addition to those mentioned already (Sheffield, Barnett, Cornwell, Bateman. The last 3 were all highly ranked QBs who transferred during the 2016 season), Bama had 9 guys from their 2015 class transfer (Jonathan Taylor was dismissed from the program). Jalen Hurts is the 12th (!!!) QB to transfer from Alabama since Saban has been there.
Just a sidebar. What qualifications/credentials do these private coaches have? It seems like many have never coached for a team before. Avery seems like a good enough guy, but people really seemed to have turned on George Whitfield. I'm just wondering how one gets into this profession. I can't imagine the team coaches like this sort of thing.
Most HS aren't equipped to mold many high level passers out there outside of the mega schools of TX/CA. The investment some of these parents put into these coaches is mindboggling.
PS, I'll be at Coach weekend 2, will you be there?
Yep. Have 1 act there this year. Will be at both
Hit me up, we should get a few drinks when I get down there.
See, I think it's all a part of social media hype. It's kinda like all of those "life and success" coaches who take pictures in Patagonia or Seychelles and next to 100,000 cars. Always with attractive people talking about success and living the free life. Yet, they're like 23 and most of it's just a finely projected image and not reality.
I don't know of anyone's credentials...but as you noted people turned on George Whitfield. It was after former QB Shaun King publicly dragged him on Twitter. Here's the article:
Yet, he's still in business.https://whitfieldathletix.com/
But it seems like Quincy Avery stepped in where GW left off as the "college/pro" QB guru.
In my opinion, Quincy Avery subtweeting Tate Martell seemed a little unnecessary and unprofessional. That's why I posted it. I don't have anything against him and don't know his true credentials but that subtweet gave me pause.
I thought he was actually going to try to play early. Now he’s sitting a year, when he could have competed here for a year and then transferred immediately because he graduated. There must be some serious bad blood behind the scenes.
High school is over. Stay off of Twitter.
Twitter is the same thing as blog forum posts, just a different platform for opinions.
Miami got their guy, Tate is no longer on the roster... Let's just give it a rest and see how he does when he's on the field.
Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.
It’s not really about Tate (I’m fine with him transferring, it’s his right/life).
To me the issue is Quincy Avery... who has some influence on Ohio State as he’s now coached Haskins and Fields.
He’s publicly touted Ryan Day and is the link to why Fields is here.
TBH I found his mid-season scripted phone call mini-TV series with his QBs which featured Haskins, kinda odd and distracting for amateur athletes.
Point being this guy has influence. It’s benefitted us somewhat but what do we know about him? What if he turns on Day/OSU? It just gave me pause when he decided to enter the fray with some subtweeting.
I mean, I see what you're talking about, but I would genuinely hope the level of "this person scratching that person's back" and vice versa, doesn't go that deep to the point of deception.
Of course, maybe I'm naïve, and it does, but man, that would be a helluva soap opera type of scenario in my book.
In our me first, media image hype world... Who knows. It just has my attention.
