Re-tooling? I'LL RE-TOOL YOU!

Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.

HS
Blue Eyed Buckeye's picture

Ryan Day is going to take this program to the next level.

Fact is we don't win the national news championship in 2014 if Urban is able to play the quarterback he wants in JT Barrett. We only won because fate put Cardale Jones under center. Then, when he had Dwayne Haskins on his roster he chose to bench him for Barrett. Even when Haskins was the starter Urban couldn't help but play a backup QB who's transferring out because he can't handle competition.

Ryan Day will manage the most important position on the field better than Urban did. Ryan Day has a better offensive scheme and calls better plays. 2019 is going to be our year!

I am expecting to see something at OSU -- similar to what happened in OK when Bobby Stoops stepped aside for Lincoln Riley.  While the Defense did not bulk up, the Offense became a juggernaut in OK.   I expect the same thing here without Meyer's shackles.....with a mandate to improve the Defense.

Only at Ohio State could you have someone as good and successful as JT Barrett and still have half of the fan base hate him.

HS
Buckloving's picture

I'm pretty sure half the fan base doesn't hate him. I'm willing to bet 95% of the fan base likes him a lot. He just wasn't very good at throwing the football. And I'm not even going to place it all on him. He was solid his first yr. It's our coaching staff's job to make him better and help him develop. They didn't do that. If he could throw the football he'd be in the NFL right now. He has everything else

I think that Barrett's broken ankle had a lot to do with his lack of development. He never really threw the same after the injury.

HS

I don't think there are many people at all that hate, or even dislike JT. Personally, I love the guy and the effort he put into my favorite sports team. Just so happens that there was a generational arm talent that should have been on the field in 2017, and he would have been had the QB room stayed on schedule and JT moved on after the '16 season. It does feel as if 2015 - 2017 were missed opportunities due to the lack of a dynamic passing game. Just look at how underutilized Mike Thomas was when he was here. I love all that JT did for Ohio State but I won't be sad to see the real option offense go away.

Seems some think . . .

  • Haskins was as good a QB at the start of the 2017 season as he was to start 2018.
  • Passing ability is the only criteria to evaluate a QB

Interesting.

What's so boss about this....*New Day in Buckeye Land,* is although next to zero HC experience, he's been groomed, & endorsed by 1 of if not Thee GOAT U. Frank M. Coaching Tree.

And RD has immediately produced huge (capital + results). Can we say, Equaliser Man, holding the ship steady amidst Heavy Turmoil{1st 3 games of the suspension}. Next he helped slam 62-39 on the weasels.

He's making his own vibe, scarfing *ichigan staff out of Hairball's grasp.

What this off-season has is no ceiling. He's already proven thus far to have continued to take Urban-Culture to the next level. Day Creations Inc.

College and pro football are ripe for an investigation by the EEOC for age discrimination as they have yet to be asked to prove that in order to get recruits you have to hire younger coaches or that age has a direct impact on the ability to perform the job as a coach.  Especially public institutions on the college side.

I don't buy one goddam drop of gas in the state of Michigan!

Agree.  And I have a sneaky feeling that we will feel the same about Greg Mattison a year from now.

HS
Tater_Schroeder's picture

Methinks this is how a huge "coaching tree" takes root. We may see a graphic on ESPN in 20 years of all the coaches that have worked under the wildly successful Ryan Day which will include some of the names in this article.

Pray for potatoes with a hoe in your hand.

HS
CowCat's picture

I don't see age discrimination at all.

LJSR, Alford, Mattison, Studrawa and Wilson are still on the staff. If anything it was just a simple "do you suck at your job?" evaluation. Our defensive staff sucked apart from LJSR. Remember that Alex Grinch was a "young gun", but he was canned anyway.

It's Ohio State. We expect energy and results. LJSR and Mattison are older, but they definitely have energy and proven results.

That’s great. Push the old guy out and call it whatever you want to, to get around age discrimination. What goes around comes around and will eventually catch up with the young guns. Being young and a great recruiter does not necessarily translate to being a good/great coach(see Alabama this year).

HS

The old guy still works there. Are hoping Day loses a few games next year?

It should be said, what is going to happen if Day does lose a couple of games next year?  Will we give him the boot ala Major Applewhite in Houston after a couple of years of losing a couple games? His personality don't seem to be on the same as UFM, Tom Herman or Lincoln Riley's. He has in fact changed the offense from UFM's to his own version and hired 2 Michigan guys to shore up our defense. It is scary to think about him being like Rich Rod or Fred Flintstone. On the other hand, what if he is more like Nick Saban and win every year? As of right now though, we know nothing Jon Snow. I think it is exciting.

Hey Cancer! This ass kicking is brought to you by the Sultan of the sythe. Give it hell CalPoppy.

Urban brought a lot of up and comers into the coaching ranks as well which stocked our cabinet for these moves. He saw it as a development opportunity at the time and asked for a 2 year commitment. I wonder if Day is asking for the same 2 year commitment from these young coaches. If the Buckeyes meet expectation next year, these young coaches are going to have a lot of teams come calling with positional promotions in hand.

Day's coaching staff has me very excited for the coming years. There is no doubt that LJ is a coach Day wants in Columbus as long as possible. His decisions were not made or hampered by age. He hired men to do a job - coach and prepare players to win football games.

HS
BUCKEYE3M's picture

I was just discussing the dynamics of hiring coaches yesterday.  I believe that we've never seen a greater rate of coaching failure than we see now.  So, with so many coaches getting fired, there's always an opening around the corner.  Combine that with everyone wanting to skip rungs on the ladder on their way up, and I think the reason so many coaches fail, is because they weren't prepared along the way for the duties thrust upon them.

At the end of the day, hiring coaches is totally a copy cat business, and the growing trend is to find young guys.  But, I don't think that it's an act of ageism or discrimination, it's just a trend.

Meyer's first staff and thier ages at the start of camp

Meyer - 48

Herman - 37

Ed War - 49 or 50

Fickell - 39

Withers - 49

Drayton - 41

Smith - late 20's

Vrabel - 37

Hinton - 52

Coombs - early 50's

HS
Dstacify's picture

Let's be realistic. Coombs was a 25 year old man in a 50+ year old man's body. He's about as much of an exception to the rule as you can find.

11 Strong.

HS
jpfbucks01's picture

Agreed about Coombs, but even with his actual age, Meyer's first staff in terms of average age was younger than Day's

Day's average is 46.6 as he has 3 quite older coaches in the mix while Meyer's first staff was 43.3

HS
Dstacify's picture

Meyer's staff only started getting older later on when he started bringing guys like LJ and Bill Davis on-board. His original OSU staff including guys like ZS, Herman, Fickell, and Vrabel definitely dropped the average age down quite a bit.

11 Strong.

HS
Dstacify's picture

I really, really hope Day views this job as a long-term one and doesn't bolt for the NFL at the first opportunity he gets like Bill O'Brien did. OSU is a better job than most NFL gigs so hopefully he plans on being here for a long time if he does well.

11 Strong.

There is a nice mix of youth and experience on this staff. More important, it's a group of guys with skills in coaching and recruiting that can cover our advance to the QB centric college game. We have been overdue to become a QBU school; we have the reputation as a national power, but our scheme and past history were holding us back. RD is about to fix that and put us in position to compete equally with the Clemson's and Alabama's of CFP.  It's beyond 'about time' and I am excited to see us take this next step.
