Defense will definitely need to step up, all the youth is on the other side of the ball this year. Going to have to carry more of the load.
Absolutely. Lots of talent on O but lots of new faces. QB, the line, Weber gone along w/Big 3. I’d expect some growing pains.
“For me, this is who we are. We have a culture. We work at it very hard. And we’re efficient at it.” - Coach Day
A lot of defensive experience and a ton of new blood on the coaching staff is a pretty exciting combination
Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.
Yes it is, yes it is indeed.
It all is exciting, but I think the open question is whether the coaching staff can come to a common mindset. Grinch and Schiano didn't work out so well in 2018.
"We get paid to score touchdowns, not kick field goals"
-- Urban Meyer
I have a great feeling. Strong finish and returning starters who will be hungry to reverse the image. The only way to go is up. Gave up 70 yard runs regularly, and still won the big ten and just missed the CFP.
Strong finish? Gave up 51 to Maryland 40 to Michigan then played high school offenses
We don't have to take our clothes off to have a good time, no no
Yes strong finish. No big plays against Michigan, one against NW, and kin against Washington. Okudah, White, Wade, Young, Harrison did finish strong.
40 to ttun ? More like 25 - 7 were a gift at half and 7 garbage time plying prevent.
Washington ranked 64th in total offense and was in the 40s ahead of teams like Texas, Georgia, Kentucky, Notre Dame, and Michigan in the last 3 games of the season and the Buckeyes held them to 23 points. Far from being a high school offense. Maryland was ranked even higher and a mere 8 spots from Bama in their last 3 games.
I don't buy one goddam drop of gas in the state of Michigan!
Washington has a terrible offense.
The statistics in the post directly above yours say they have a decent offense. Where are the facts to support your opinion?
I don't give a damn for the whole state of Xichigan.
They were 88th in the nation in scoring offense.
They scored 30 points in just 4 games, and those were against North Dakota, BYU, UCLA, and Oregon State.
Also, 64th in the nation in total offense is not “decent,” especially for a team that has an excellent defense and clearly more talent than most teams on its PAC 12 schedule. Their offense was bad.
They had Michigan at only 19 for most of the game with one TD coming off only a quick change and Michigan on the 9. It wasn't until we got up three scores that the defense started having issues but a lot of that was just letting Michigan march up the field instead of giving up big plays
Let’s hope experience + new coaching blood = Silver Bullets....much like Hartline and the WRs this past season.
Either way, if the commitment to fundamentals is followed, we’ll be in good shape.
Al Washington is going to have to magically find a way to make Tuf Borland faster next season. I hope he's up to the task.
Well, I’d say no one is safe - except for Harrison. Too many others who need a look. Gant, Teradja, Pope, Ke’andre.
Hilliard has one more year of eligibility. I wouldn't count him out.
Didn’t intentionally. Just saying there’s plenty of others in that room. It’s hard for me to believe 32 and 20 are two of the best.
As far as 47 I was really rooting for him and still am. By all accounts he’s worked just as hard if not harder than most.
Hilliard, Jones and Browning may all benefit from whatever approach Washington takes to whatever scheme changes are going to be put in place. There was a reason that they were all so highly rated coming in, so hopefully Washington has the ability to utilize it before their time passes.
Hopefully Tuf will be 100% healthy in 2019 , I'm sure his injury slowed him down last year.
"If you take it to em and you keep takin it to em , hell there's no question whose gonna win" W.W.H
He was way too slow to play here before the injury.
An Achilles injury is usually a 12 month recovery. I’m holding out hope that he wasn’t 100%
Borland has decent instincts but is simply too slow to play at this level. I hope Washington explores all options, and seniority is not a factor.
Hope he sprints to the bench. Or akron
Dude, need me to refer you to a therapist? Might help a little in that negativity department.
The pain of discipline or the pain of regret, take your pick
More like CherryWhine, amirite?
That won't happen. It would take him so long to get there that we would subsequently be flagged for having 12 men on the field.
Now that is funny.
Al Washington may not play favorites. The best players will probably play. If Tuff can overcome his snail speed by some other strengths, he will play, but not necessarily so much.
It can only go up in 2019. Therefore, it has to be better.
I wish I could time warp to the end of August.
I think a lot hinges upon getting a consistent pass rush from someone not named Chase Young. Jonathan Cooper needs to step up
Cooper is solid, but Tyreke is the next “star”. He’s young but from what the others have said...
Anyone know if Mr. Harrison is an early enrollee? Not saying he's necessarily going to play a lot this year, but it's an intriguing possibility.
Yes, he has enrolled already. Go Bucks!
We lost guys that is true but still had some of the same issues in the middle of the defense actually for the last 3 years. The only difference in 16 was the Oklahoma game imo. Our LB's were making immediate reads after the snap, and were right most of the time. Probably why Mayfield & Iowa for that matter. was so successful against us with their RPO's in 17. Can't possibly get worse, so we have that.
MICHIGAN STILL SUCKS
And all 3 LB's had at least 10 tackles in the Michigan game in 2016 , Baker had an INT as well , the only difference from 2017 was Luke Fickell.
And gave up 40 points. Congrats
The second “h” is missing from your screen name.
I am encouraged to see what new defensive schemes we'll insert next season - I think we finally have the right staff to put these players in the right positions.
See you in Indy !!
It's not a rivalry .............. it's a wreckoning.
Seattle Sounders 2019 MLS Champions
I guess this is why our recruiting class is so small. I’ll take it
DBs that turn their heads
LBs that diagnose plays
Safeties that take better angles
Three areas of improvement regardless of who gets snaps.
Yes please!! I'll have all of those.
The juice is worth the squeeze
Oh and let’s stop with the 3rd down PIs. I swear half of these calls were on throws that probably weren’t catchable.
Justice delayed is justice denied....#FTP
I think this is more of a trend across all of football. Teams know that the old saying of 3 things happen on a pass, and 2 are bad. Now it's 4 things, and it's 50/50 with PI being the other positve.
You're too stupid to have a good time. -Dalton
We need to have a dominant defense once again. Our offense will be outstanding with either Tate or Fields or Baldwin at QB. However, with a dominant Defense, we won’t have to score 50+ points to win a game.
Need to find some stars. Chase young must be consistently good, not just occasionally. Of course the LBs must improve.
But we need a couple guys in the secondary to make a jump and start living up to their talent/potential. Okudah and Wade both need to be not just contributors but stars. I see a lot of average guys in our line-up. We need more difference makers. Hope the new coaching staff takes a long look at many of the guys in the back 7.
Right. Not questioning recruiting but I miss the days of a Doss at S. Laid the wood.
Laying wood is not legal anymore. You’ll get a flag every time. We are in a generation of gently suggesting a guy go to the ground so we can help him up and tell him what a great job he did.
It depends on many factors and none of them make any sense. Sometimes you get called for wood laying, sometimes you can go helmet to helmet on a sliding QB and nothing happens.
Technique. Too often the defender lowers his head and not his shoulder. Technique. Also one of the factors Mattison is said to deliver. We’ll see. My nephews play HS and JV right now. I see plenty of poor technique. Yes they’re kids but coaching can be the difference.
I think we saw in 2018 how important it is to have a D-staff that is on the same page. If there are issues in the coaches room and lack of trust, it’ll bleed onto the field and effect the players. I am excited to see how this new staff of coaches come together! They have A FULL cupboard of talent the goes well into the 3-deep...silver bullets, let’s lock n load!!!!
"When you help someone up a hill, you get that much closer to the top yourself..."
Wish I could of been a fly on the wall for discussion about the D. With everybody gone...harder to tell who was really getting blamed.
Give Tuf Borland a break. I talked to my orthopedic surgeon who told me, oh he is a die hard Buckeye, TOSU grad, that’s why I picked him, that Tuf was playing on half a foot. Like another submitter said that injury is 1 year full recovery. He said Tuf will be fine by spring ball. Of course that injury effects your speed, lateral movement, push off and such. Why did they go with him, 1. Browning CANNOT play the Mike and 2. Tif is the toughest guy on the team, per his teammates. With the defensive staff cleaned out except for LJ, The Silver Bullits will be back, with the toughness and mean streak of old. Mattison and Washington are both very intense as is Hafley. We’ll see about Barnes. LJ is LJ. Look for Tyrrhenian Smith to push Cooper to the 2’s. Also look for Togiai, Vincent and Garrett to have an impact and let’s not forget Zach Harrison. As for the LB’, it should be Harriison, Borland and Briwnibg, with Jones, Mitchell and Gant the twos. That’s right no Werner. He is not an LB. was Davis’s fav. Can’t tackle over persues and takes poor angles. Secondary should be Wade and Okudah at corner, White and Fuller at safety with Riep as nickel. Arnette(lucky to be a two can’t cover) and Williamson as twos at corner with Proctor and Pryor at twos at safety. Maybe Sheffield at nickel. He also can’t cover. Wint should transfer. Nuff said from the old coach in Naples.
Jack L Frysinger
Careful big fry, people on here dont like you talking shit about players. Apparently we all have to say how Werner is the best linebacker on the team and Arnette never commits any penalties.
Wait are you saying Pete MacSafety..is not BIG LB? Who knew?
“Davis fav”. I remember urban gushing plenty about Werner. Either way I’m hoping for changes. I think Proctor is a guy in the weeds, w something to offer. We’ll see.
Tuf does seem to be an instinctual linebacker with a nose for the ball. I do hope he is fully recovered for 2019.
Fwiw, Werner is the best LB in coverage on the team. Some have suggested using him on obvious passing downs, but that wouldn’t work against tempo offenses.
I just rewatched the Rose Bowl, and Werner had a least one textbook PBU using the no-look technique. Even the announcers commented on it. I've seen him do that in other games as well (maybe TTUN game?) His strip in the endzone of the TTUN game was pretty sweet too. Not saying he should run with the 1's, but he has some skills.
My aim, then, is to whip the Weasels, to humble their pride, to follow them to their inmost recesses, and make them fear and dread us. Fear is the beginning of wisdom. - William Tecumseh Sherman (with apologies)
Tuf was too small and slow before his injury.
Experience is like a favorite "security blanket". They've seen nearly everything and are rarely surprised. Reads are quicker and more accurate, so even less talented players get to the right spot sooner. If Mattison et al focus on fundamentals as reported, we should take huge steps forward on defense, even If some of last years starters get overtaken by younger talent; they'll be very valuable backups. Agree that many of the uncertainties will be on offense. Lots to speculate about this offseason which is why we all read this site everyday!!
Every single position in the back 7 should be up for grabs. If everyone knows they are on equal footing then imagine how many Brendon White type players could explode onto the scene. More rotation on the D Line will be needed this year if we are going to play Clemson in the playoffs.
You never lose to those pricks. Ever. Ever. Urban Frank Meyer
Borland and Werner will not start this coming season the new LB coach will know neither are fast enough to play on an elite defense
Agreed - maybe in spots but certainly not starters IMO
Werner is certainly fast enough to play at linebacker, but lacks the physical size to take on blockers and shed them. He also makes horrific reads and often takes poor angles of pursuit. He is, frankly speaking, very good in coverage (top LB in pass break-ups this season for OSU). Maybe he needs to drop some weight, up his speed a bit and look at safety ??
Wasn't Werner a coverted DB anyways?
That's what I thought too ....
I don’t think people realized how young the defense was to start the season, how inexperienced we were,” former linebackers coach Bill Davis
Well Bill, the defensive line has new starters as the article mentions, yet they were good. I hope the players with more upside have better coaching and take the field. Here is looking at you Justin Hilliard and Baron Browning. Hilliard just couldn't run down the field faster than McClaurin, but he was certainly there every time. Don't tell me he isn't ready.
Man what a money year for Hilliard, Browning and Jones...can’t wait to see who steps up and takes a starter job. BTW..I think Tuf will improve as well. Not sure he was 100%...and still believe he can be a run stuffer.
The last time a first year incoming Coach was left with so much talent in the cupboards and was replacing a LEGEND, he took us to within ONE point of a Natty. We had a Sophomore QB who was a preseason Heisman candidate, We have the highest rated QB to ever step foot in the Woody, period. We had a starting Outside LB on that '79 team by the name of Al Washington (SR.) I doubt this Offense will be one point shy of anything. Oh and this Deeee... will be coached at LBs by one of the hottest young Coaches in the Business right now, Al Washington (JR.) Whom we poached from that barely breathing, TUN. They are reeling, while we are dealing. Hop on this '19 train towards the Natty!! While Dweebo and his Grampa Nick are dealing with alot of holes on both sides of the ball to the NFL, we are returning almost EVERYONE. Factor in the solid Position Coaches we brought in to replace last years under performing ones, and this Silver Bullet Train is screaming outta the gates!!!
Experience can’t fix the slowest and least athletic MLB in the last 30 years
Zach Boren? Zack was hard-nosed and a true Buckeye, but the same can be said for Tuf.
Tuf plays hard and definitely puts forth the effort but he isn't in Boren's league when comes to being a hard-nosed beast. Nothing wrong with Tuf but he is no Zac Boren.
BigBuckeye says Go Bucks
That’s a lot of seniors to have to replace after next season, that’s worrisome.
Oh Bill Davis speaking on inexperience. After spring ball and a few games they have experience. His unit was inexperienced because of his coaching.
The "D" had a full year under their belt when they played the 4th quarter in the Rose Bowl, one of their worst quarters all year. Just happy our new coach saw it for what it was and made some necessary changes that I hope prove to be home run hires!
I like Tuf...as long as he doesn't have to cover someone in space. The guy can lead, diagnose plays, and tackle. If he truly can get quicker/faster, I look forward to having him man the middle again. What I REALLY hope for is that Browning can get coached up and put his athleticism on full display. In the end though, now that I think we have unbiased and knowledgeable coaches in place, I think we'll see the best 3 out there one way or the other. Get em' ready Al!
Wise men speak because they have something to say; fools because they have to say something.
So many coaches on here telling everyone who should and shouldn’t play, like they really know much more than coaches who see them every day. Typical Buckeye Nation (not all, but just a few armchair quarterback morons). Looking at you CherryWine, among others.
Out of curiosity, were you happy with the defense last year?
The way I see it, it's not uncommon for fans to voice their opinion of what could possibly fix the issues with their favorite teams. It's been that way since the dawn of time... or at least the invention of sports.
And on that thought... what would you do to fix our defense?
This was the worst defense in Ohio State history in both scoring defense and total defense. Let that sink in.
That also occurred despite playing no good teams out of conference and at a time where the recruiting has been the best in program history over the past 4-5 years. There is a pretty strong case to be made that our defensive coaches did less with more than any other coaches not just in OSU history but college football history.
I agree with everything you said. It was abysmal
Worst ever! Glad Day started to clean house. Still needs some additional broom work.
"I think Alabama would beat Ohio State if they played next weekend!" Clay Travis Fox Sports Post Championship Show 1.12.2015. Needs no explanation.
Scheme gentlemen. You’re talking apples and oranges in some way. Personnel will perform far differently in next year’s scheme. For example, if schene is designed to strengths, both Borland and Werner could be more successful. And I see LB rotation, with different linebackers involved more as matched up against certain teams. Only Harrison has earned full-time snaps.
Werner is a hybrid player, who might play better as a LB/SS in a scheme that resembles some of what TTUN employs.
I can't wait to watch our D with true superior depth. If someone gets injured or lays the wood and gets a targeting, we won't miss a beat. And if a player is sleepwalking during a game, yank his ass and get the next guy in there.
The best we can hope is this new staff brings the fire to the sidelines. Every defender must believe that they are going to dominate every play with brute physicality. Love the silver bullet moniker, but this year I want to see the BRUTE-US defense.
Let's hope nobody quits.
Its going to be big to have the defense returning 9 or 10 starters and be 2-3 deep at every position. That's a luxury most teams can't afford. I think the defense is going to have a big turnaround in 2019. Like 10 ppg and 100+ ypg better.
"allowing more points per game (25.5) and yards per game (403.4) than any previous season in school history"
And we still ended up 13-1 and ranked #3. Crazy.
Just want to see Browning dominate.
Schedule stacks up well for us. No top-ten non-conference banger to worry about. We don’t face a difficult test until we go on the road to Lincoln. Huskers finished strong last year and will be ready for us. But otherwise - FAU, Cincy, and Miami of Ohio at home, trip to Columbus West to face Indiana. Sets up well for new offensive line to get time to gel before facing tougher teams.
"Woody would have wanted it that way"
Bucks_4_life......I wouldn’t, and never will bash 20 year old college players and badmouth decisions to come back (Arnette is just one of several examples of player bashing), nor would I ever use 20/20 hindsight to criticize play calling and/or call for a coach’s head because certain plays don’t work. Like I said before, so many armchair coaches think they know so much more than experienced coaches. Buckeye Nation, generally speaking, is spoiled with what we’ve had over the years. And those who critique Urban Meyer, and are OVERJOYED with the new hire, need to calm down and see how things pan out. Those same fans who think Day is an outstanding coach will turn on him when things don’t live up to their ridiculous expectations. Again, get off the 20/20 hindsight.
I forsee the defense improving at least 40 spots in the national rankings simply because it appears we have a good defensive staff that will be on the same page. We have too much talent not to be in the Top 30. If we had a Top 30 D this season we wouldve been in the playoffs.
I also forsee some of the younger kids emerging this spring and summer. Gant and Mitchell at LB are my picks. Al Washington will get them ready.
"You're the patron saint of the totally effed" - Hot Tub Time Machine
We are going to run more zone. Well, at least thats what they liked to do at SCUM. It will be a more zone than man. At least from figuring from what we saw last year. That will leave the crossing routes open. So, if we adjust to the crossing routes in that D we will be fine. They played cover 2 as well. It will all be left up to how we adjust to the scheme. I beleive we will have a better Deffense this year then last. We have the talent thats for sure. Go Bucks!
In any given season, the defensive approach must take into account the experience level of players. When players are relatively inexperienced, the approach particularly needs to be simpler and less demanding of players individually making plays, or constantly thinking that they have to . . . more of a sound, fundamental, unit approach to defense.
For whatever reason, with a relatively inexperienced defense last year, that didn't seem to happen in 2018 and, IMO, it contributed, in large measure, to last year's defense being less effective.
"Life is ten percent what happens to you and ninety percent how you respond to it." - Woody Hayes
Let's cut to the chase. Is Borland and Werner going to start in 2019? Asked another way, are there no other better linebackers at THE Ohio State University than Borland and Werner? in 2019?
I believe the defense will be improved next season. Hopefully with a new coaching staff the players will be fired up to prove themselves as I believe every spot will be an open competition. I can't wait for spring practice to watch it unfold.
There are many players returning on defense. If it was a SIlver Bullets quality, I would be elated. However, we are talking about the worst defense in OSU history. Hoping the new coaching staff will figure it out and come up with the proper schemes, develop players, and identify the best players to be on the field.
the good news is everyone is coming back--the bad news is everyone is coming back
