This is a really good hire for them. He's a really good WR coach and UM has a ton of receiver talent in DPJ, Black, and Collins. We'll see if he can call plays, but this is without question an upgrade over Pep Hamilton

Sorry Urban, Woody is still my favorite

HS

I agree.  Here's hoping Jimmy keeps butting in to "help" their offense...which to be fair has been truly offensive (to their fans).

HS
BKallDAY's picture

I agree as well . . . I look forward to having him on OSU's staff next year!

HS
lljjgg's picture

How much of the play-calling did he do compared to Locksley? I wasn't really impressed with the Alabama offense at all down the stretch when they finally played worthwhile opponents, and from what I've heard from Bama fans lately neither were they.

The other question about any UM OC is how much do they call the plays/organize the offense, and how much does Harbaugh call the plays/organize the offense? I'm sure a UM fan can answer this for me. But regardless of their OC, their offense has looked stone age. I would be surprised if any OC can really change what they're doing dramatically while Harbaugh is at the helm, his offenses have looked the same regardless of where he's been.

HS
WVBuckeye's picture

People around the Bama program said he was actually 3rd in line behind Locksley and Enos even though he was officially the co-OC. Apparently he’s a great recruiter though. Harbaugh hiring a guy who’s never called plays before sounds an awful lot like he wants to control the offense, but wants to get input from a guy with a different philosophy to try to adjust their offense.

HS
ScarletnGreyTexan's picture

Great observation, If you ask me the offense looked stagnant down the stretch after you had coaches jumping ship. To me this was a Hail mary by TTUN to grab a "name" after being embarrassed by Day. Let's be honest, Gattis by all accounts was heading to Maryland and then out of nowhere he signs with TTUN. Sorry, but I think this is much ado about nothing BUT we need to go back and look at what his fingerprint looks like. How much was their "Great receiver play and offense" really do to just exceptional talent. Hell with some of their receivers my son could have been a great coach there. The magic in Alabama is Saban, not all of their coaches.

Michigan fan here.  I'm actually curious how things are going to go.  Nobody has really been given the OC title until now.  Previously coaches have been given titles of Passing Game Coordinator and Run Game Coordinator.  So this is a first.  It doesn't guarantee things will operate any differently though.  I'm sure Harbaugh will keep the final say on plays.  I guess we will see what happens.

HS

Whatever Jim has been doing, here’s to having him keep doing it!

HS
ItsMichiganFerGodSakes's picture

Lljjgg yes they did not perform in the national championship.  However, which part of their previous 3 games was you not impressed on with?  The 50 points dropped on Auburn, 35 on Georgia, or "only" scoring 45 on Oklahoma?

For your second question, I think it is a bit of a mystery.  This is the first time under Harbaugh where they are naming someone as the title of offensive coordinator.  In the past, it was mixed on who would give input on the plays. From my understanding, the majority of play calls were from Pep but Harbaugh obviously had the option to change the play.

HS
CTBuckeyeFan's picture

However, which part of their previous 3 games was you not impressed on with?

All of them?  Oklahoma's D may be the worst in the country, Auburn lost to Ms State and TN while that UGA D had no answer for the sensational Sam Ehlinger.  Curious why Gattis would be leaving Bama with the OC spot open if he was really that good.  Bama in 2018 was a product of a pretty weak schedule.

HS
8MileBuckeye's picture

They still have Pep Hamilton so I’m not worried about this hire.

HS
iowabuckeyes's picture

But if Gattis is OC, does that Pep's taking a demotion or is he gone?

Doesn't matter who they hire as OC. It's Harbaughs offense and he's never going to let anyone come in and change it. He's essentially hiring someone to scapegoat when his offense inevitably fails again.

Won't change a thing until Harbaugh gets out of the way on offense. Michigan comes up with these game plans but resorts back to Har-ball each time.

Damn. I've followed Josh ever since he helped win an ACC Championship at Wake in 2006 as a safety. Remarkable career path, already having worked at PSU, Bama, and now Michigan. He's a legit recruiter and awesome WR coach. Would have preferred him to Yurich, to be honest, especially since Day is a QB/passing coordinator guy.

HS
BurningRiverBuckeye's picture

You'd rather have someone who has never called plays be your OC over a guy with a proven track record? Interesting.

HS
DeacBuck's picture

Kevin Wilson has called plays. Ryan Day has called plays. I think he'd be cool to have as a young, up-and-coming ace recruiter. There's also the diversity factor which may or may not matter to players/recruits. Plus I really like the guy.

However, we do have Hartline crushing it coaching/recruiting the WR position, so it probably wouldn't have been as much of an add for OSU as it is TTUN.

Go Bucks, Deacs, Panthers, Braves

Just went to mgo.blow and they are thrilled with the hire.

Everything I read about Gattis is that he was a defensive back in college and a WR coach in college. LMAO, he's now xichigans OC???? He's never been an OC, only a co-OC.

HS

That’s the new trend, if you haven’t heard.

HS
teddyballgame's picture

He's a WR coach that's been passed over for legit OC duties at PSU and Bama.  Michigan is going to finally give him a change to prove himself as a p5 OC but Bama guys don't think he's ready.

HS
analyticalguy's picture

No worry. He'll have Harbaugh there to help him succeed.

HS
Moutarde's picture

He's ready.  Calling plays for TTUN is easy.

1st down: Off-tackle left

2nd down:  Off-tackle right

3rd down:  Throw it somewhere

4th down:  Punt.

To be fair, he had about as much to do with this as Mattison and Washington did with giving up 62 to Ohio State.

HS
Homey1970's picture

Wonder if he’ll be as successful without the Bama 5 stars.

HS
tcm1968's picture

This is going to end badly... a guy who has never called plays coming from an offense that didn't have to be creative because they flat out could just out athlete people. Going to a school that has to be creative because they can't out athlete teams...

And I don't see any mention of an offensive coach leaving???  they didn't have an OC last year.....

Gattis is a solid young coach..... but that's a big leap... if we were bringing in a guy who never called plays to call plays the 11W server would melt down..

Go Bucks!

So how is this different from bringing in Hafley on the defensive side of things? I think this is a nice hire for TTUN, but honestly, Harbaugh has consistently made decent assistant hires throughout his tenure. The problem with it all is him, and until he realizes that and allows his assistants to do the playcalling without his input and influence they will go nowhere. It is interesting that he was on the move to begin with since Locksley was already departing. Seems as if he was told to find new work as opposed to being a hot commodity.

HS
actionstanleyjackson's picture

Calling offense a bit different. Plus OSU brought in the old dog Mattison also. And Hafley has a ton more experience than Gattis and both levels.

Stay golden, Ponyboy.

HS
tcm1968's picture

Overall experience for one.. Gattis has only coached for 8 years and this will be year 18 for Hafley. And it's not shared up in Michigan like it is at OSU with Hafley and Mattison as Co-DCs.. Gattis is the one and only OC although Harbaugh will still clearly meddle with the play calling..

Plus the obvious different side of the ball. Defense is always a more collaborative effort in coaching.. Mattison has been a DC, Larry Johnson has 30 years of experience and we still don't know who are final defensive coach will be..

I think he's a solid coach and it's good hire... but it's still asking a lot of guy who's never held the position or called plays... as I said.. think it will be end badly..

Go Bucks!

Ohio State's first game is against FAU, soooooooo if Kiffin got fired in midseason and promptly hired by Harbaugh, he'd have the unique distinction of losing his first and last games to Ohio State, which would not only be unique but also fitting.

Actually the exact opposite.  This is the first OC brought in in the Harbaugh era.  They have had passing and running coordinators in the past.

HS

Will help their recruiting but I doubt it helps their offense. I could be an assistant at Alabama with all the 4 and 5* recruits they have. Alabama sells itself. The TTUN fans that think their offense is about to take off and look much different are about to be disappointed.

I feel whomever comes in is stuck behind the playing style. The power game is fine and all but it worked better in the Pac12. If you have to play an OSU sort of team that has you beat in terms of athletes and scheme than it does not go well most of the time.

Have to see how they do. I imagine they beat a fair number of teams, get overhyped and then struggle against their better competition in the end.

I don't expect this to go well. Gattis may introduce some new scheme's in their passing game, BUT Harbaugh for some reason just can't get out the way up there.

It's really shocking that the guy who rode Kap and that style of offense to a NFC Championship has done so little to upgrade and modernize his game in AA..

HS
NoVAsmitty's picture

OK.  So Gattis was co-OC to Locksley OC at Bama.  Locksley leaves for the MD HC job and Gattis isn't promoted to top dog OC at Bama.  Harbaugh grabs him.

This is a replacement for McIlwain as WR coach.  Just wait until Mgo realizes this is the real deal.  The melt down will be epic.  Maybe the guy brings in some "new ideas," but Crazy Jimmie is still in complete control of that 1988 offense. If he was really being brought in as sole OC, wouldn't Pep be shown the door?  Has he been?  I have a feeling the only person that was shown the door was Gattis by lil Nicky down in Tuscaloosa who in his old age moves just a tad slower than Ryan Day with staff changes.

Well it does look like a good hire for TTUN since the Bama fans appeared to think he was a good coach (at least looking at the comments on this AL site).  https://www.al.com/alabamafootball/2019/01/josh-gattis-leaving-alabama-f...

Too bad he did not go to my other rooting interest, MD.  Oh well, maybe we'll get lucky and get Hurts (talking about MD, not OSU).

HS
BuckeyeBulldog's picture

M fans seem happy with this one, being a WR coach I can understand their excitement. Still has to be given control of the offense to show any real differnece though and I doubt that will happen.
Bama assistants always leave me wondering too, how much of their success is their own v. a product of the talent differential they have over most teams. See ex Patriot assistants for more evidence.
