This is super helpful :)

Perhaps that's a warning that potential transferees entering the portal should heed.

A very timely and useful article, thanks for writing it!
I'm making a note here...
What day is this?
If you die before you die, then you won't die when you die.
"Q: Can an athlete remove himself from the transfer portal? If so, are there consequences to removing yourself from the portal?
A: Yes, an athlete can remove himself or herself from the portal. However, once an athlete puts his or her name in the portal, their current school is not obligated to take them back if they decide not to transfer. It is up to the school to accept the athlete back on the team. If a player decided not to transfer after putting their name in the portal, their scholarship or financial aid could be pulled after the end of the academic term."
How about that? You go in the portal and you better be DAMNED sure you are leaving because your current school doesn't have to take you back...wow
vicariously living through tOSU since 1987...
It has to be that way. Otherwise its like telling your girlfriend/wife that you would like to try out tinder and go on dates but if it doesn't work out you can come back like nothing ever happend.
I found that interesting, as well. I think that increases the likelihood of Tate leaving for good.
This is definitely where I parked my car.
While I personally was never a huge fan of Martell, you can’t blame him for leaving. With fields in the mix as Days guy, politically, Fields will get the benefit of the doubt in a an battle. So through no fault of his own, he is starting out from behind. If Meyer were around and fields came, the paradigm is different and I bet Tate stays, but the game has changed and he is wise enough to see it. Plus with jack miller coming in, I can’t see future opportunities if Fields should stumble
Which leads me to 2 questions, Would Day have even recruited Martell out of HS, and also, would Fields even consider this if we still had Urban as HC? I think both are no, and this is a perfect storm.
i'm not sure martell is better than baldwin (MB may be a really good qb) - and with justin fields coming in and jack miller on the horizon, i think martell finds himself between a rock and hard place.
I was a fan until he started talking so much smack over Twitter. If he has that level of maturity, what kind of leader can he be on the field?
If I must choose between peace and righteousness, I choose righteousness! -Theodore Roosevelt.
Soooo, when does this term end? Will there be a decision on Fields before then? This sounds like Russian roulette, but instead of one bullet and five empty chambers, there are five bullets and one empty chamber!
I'd rather be an hour early than a minute late.
Spring semester ends 4/22. However, there are some classes for a shorter segment. It depends on what Martell is taking. It is in both his and OSU's interest for him to be in good academic standing if he leaves.
As an alternative, Tate could withdraw today with no penalty. Classes started Monday.
Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing.
Thanks, Hetuck. Now the question is, when will the Fields decision come down? Could be tough if it comes down after 4/22.
I thought a portal was that Maguffin thing that armies slip through from other dimensions.
I pictured a tunnel full of strobe lights, lasers, and encrypted codes. Matrix meets rave/train station. Fog machines & lsd. No way you can stay in the portal too long and still be a productive qb...
edit: after further thought, I can see a “poltergeist” situation. Opposing coaches talking to the tv static, telling Tate about the light.
I have to return some videotapes

Are we able to access the portal to see who is available?

Nope. Just coaches.
Interesting that only coaches have access, yet some random person on twitter posted a picture of that and tagged several reporters. Wonder what coach sent that to the twitter user who posted it?
Could've been a small school coach.
^^^^^^^So Harbaugh then?
And some dude with a twitter handle of "SloppyBaseballs"...
I'd rather be a minute early than an hour early, 'cause I like to procrastinate.
I know a guy that coaches cross country at a D-III school and he has access to portal. He was joking about emailing Justin Fields to see if he wanted to run for him.
I don’t see a problem. It’s his future, his choice. Maybe he’s looking at all available options, but will compete for the spot ala Jeaux Burreaux. If he competes and loses, it’s best to give other universities enough time to touch base. He runs his mouth a bit, but I’m not going to jump his case for looking out for his interests. Ohio State just has too many good qb’s. Go Bucks
Exactly right. I heard he is on track to graduate in May. If so, he is keeping all of his options open. Doesn't necessarily mean he won't compete or will transfer right away.
You Got Barbecue Back There!?!?!?!
I find it hard to believe that he is on track to graduate this Spring. If I'm not mistaken he is a redshirt freshman and that would mean he is graduating after 2 years. Did he enroll early and then that would make it 2 1/2 years?
Maybe he took summer classes. Incredible though.
The curriculum for Athletes has to be different than the average student. I remember having football players in my classes and with the exception of the first few class meetings, I rarely saw them (I understand they have tutors). I imagine they have condensed hours, so I think they could technically graduate earlier than the average student if they want to.
I could be totally wrong as well. Apparently he took everything OSU off of his twitter profile, so there's that. Not gonna bash him though. The young man has to decide what's best for his future.

"The height of human desire is what wins, whether it's on Normandy Beach or in Ohio Stadium." -Wayne Woodrow Hayes
For example, a player from a Big Ten school is unable to transfer to another in-conference program until they complete one full academic year of residence at their current school.
That's interesting. Tate cant transfer to another B1G school unless he finishes the current school year. Wonder if he intends to practice and if he loses the starting job he's gone?
"You're the patron saint of the totally effed" - Hot Tub Time Machine
no reasons to open the portal unless he want to leave sooner as opposed to later
I think he stays till after Spring ball and his first competition with Fields. If he is winning he stays, if he is losing he is out like Joe Burrow.
I get the feeling that he would have needed to wait until after Spring Ball to put his name in the pipe.
Based on the rules as explained, he has basically told Ohio State he wants out.
Whoso would be a man, must be a non-conformist.
Well with his scrubbing of his twitter account and such, he does seem to be on his way out. But technically he could have just put his name in and still come back. It would be up to the school to take him back.
I read that to mean that the student athlete has to complete at least one year at current school. Tate has completed 1.5 years already and so would be eligible to leave whenever.
That's what I thought too.
Yeah, I'm not sure how I feel about this portal. The kids aren't slaves. They should be able to contact and be contacted by whomever they wish, whenever they wish. Why is this even allowed in 2019? Furthermore, do other students (or student athletes for that matter) have to "sit out" a year if they decide to transfer to another college or university? Do coaches for that matter? Hell no. What makes "grad student transfers" so special that allows them to start immediately? This isn't even about Tate, really, but as it's currently set up, the portal is basically a death sentence for a player. A public shaming almost. "OH HE'S IN THE PORTAL!! ZOMG!!!" Stupid. Just stupid. If you're not gonna pay the kids, at the very least give them their freedom and right to privacy as they pursue their academic (har har) and athletic goals. The current system makes kids have to hire lawyers to plead their cases for transfers, even when racists yell the "N" word at you for pity's sake. Stupid!
Round on the ends and "HI" in the middle. O-HI-O.
Grad transfers have graduated. Yes, that is special. They should be treated differently.
I agree that they should be able to transfer whenever they want, however I dont think it's right that they got a free ride for x amount of years only to leave. I think all school specific scholarships should be paid back if a student transfers before graduating. That includes non athletes as well. I feel the same about coaches, but at least there is a buy out normally.
I had to pay back every dime of my ROTC scholarship when I disenrolled and went active duty, why should not they pay it back? Seems fair to me!
This rule is actual incentive for the players to go to class and finish their degree. They then have the options do do as they please and are not beholden to the university. It’s one of the few player friendly aspects of the whole scholarship relationship thing.
Perhaps the school that takes the transfer should have to pay for the year, two or three years the initial University forked out.
He was on scholarship for 2 years and put 2 year into the football program... Seems like he fulfilled his obligation...
Why? If they have eligibility left for football, why don’t they owe that to the football team that put them through college?
The school can't do anything to prevent it, so no, the kids aren't slaves. At all. As for the rest of it, you want to coach in a situation where your All-American in his second year as a starter can get pursued and solicited openly by many other schools? And if he elects to stay, the fact that OSU has the right to revoke his scholarship doesn't mean they will, or should. Though I don't know how his fellow student athletes feel about it. One week, he can't wait to be their starting QB, or at least compete for the job. The next week, he's on the open market.
Personally, I understand his decision to consider what's out there. It's a bit like the NFL-eligible guys requesting an evaluation to see how they are objectively viewed. But it feels a little premature when he has no idea if Fields is going to be eligible in the fall, or if Fields is good enough to take the starting spot from him. Sort of preferred Burrow's handling of things, at least competing through the spring before transferring out. I mean, if he decides in February or in June, he's sitting this fall, either way. He doesn't have a case to be made for allowing him to play immediately.
"Woody would have wanted it that way"
They can’t prevent it, but they can make them sit out a year. A year is a lifetime for a young athlete. My take on it is more about the lack of privacy the kids have and the amount of power over them they have. Sure, they enter into an agreement when they “commit,” but they still have rights as citizens. I would have absolutely no problem with kids coming and going whenever they want (within reason like pro sports) and playing for other teams. Why should talented kids (or busts) not be able to pursue their desires or goals as freely as coaches or other students? They’re not being paid or on a contract. They’d have to pay back their scholarships perhaps but what else do they owe the university? This situation with Tate is extreme, but there are likely many others in similar situations elsewhere. It’s supply and demand. One could argue that bringing in Fields under the circumstances was a breach of agreements of sorts with Martell so bizarre was the turn of events. Two weeks ago Tate was already crowned the starter next season for all intents and purposes. I think we fix this if we keep these matters private (ie some idiot tweeting out pics of the portal), and let kids transfer without penalty for next season. That seems fair to me. Just don’t like where this is going. “ESPN Portal Watch.” LOL
One issue with having players have the ability to come and go as they please is it makes it really hard for coaches to recruit the right positions for the future. We are going to be sorely understaffed at the qb position this year if Fields is ineligible or if Tate transfers. And we know about these. Imagine if players could just leave whenever. You could have your whole backup line decide to go somewhere else and you have no one to play. Plus the coaches would have to make sure they aren't to tough on players or they make a rash decision and leave.
Plus this is actually not always a bad thing for the players. Imagine if other teams could constantly contact you all the time. It would be an extreme distraction from both school and your play. Harbaugh would probably go all stalker on different players. Plus this system makes the players really think about the decision to transfer and not make the choice to quick.
Yes, but imagine a world where these young men are treated like adults with rights and they CAN have some mobility in where they play next season or midway thru a season...like the pros. Teams have a need? Fine! Get that kid from East-West Directional state that is amazing, like #4 from Purdue or something. Didn’t recruit you from Ohio to OSU and now a standout at NW? Our mistake! Come to OSU! So many possibilities. None of which I would have entertained twenty years ago, but in this age of ESPN/ABC/FOX/CBS/bowl committees making BILLIONS off these kids, I don’t see why we embrace these archaic, unfair, antiquated NCAA rules regarding “amateur athletes.” If they don’t make loot, why should EVERYONE else be making loot EXCEPT the men breaking their bodies and minds? The day that ESPN donates ALL their profits from college football to the universities to pay for the cost of an education, don’t talk to me about “amateur athletes.” Change my mind. ;)
The difference is in the pro sports you can't just walk away from your team and sign with another. You can be traded, which would be interesting in college football. But if you sign with a team they have the rights to you till they decide to get rid of you or the contract is done. The NFL sucks in the fact they don't have guaranteed contracts like MLB and the NBA because that it is bullshit that a team can cut you at any point and not pay you.
I am not trying to defend the NCAA and other companies making money off all these kids. We really should go to a European Football style setup where all sports are club based and are just associated with a university. That way the clubs can pay them. (This will never happen, sadly.) But just allowing players to move around the College football all willy nilly would cause chaos for both the players and the teams. You can't do it in the NFL, you can only choose where to go after your first contract is over and then you are stuck there till that contract is over.
It’s like a Facebook Flesh Fair.
I pray that none of our other players get sucked into this portal
In other words, you must weigh the decision seriously before going into the portal because the school is no longer under obligation to keep your scholly. I would say that Martell is certainly as good as gone. Too bad. I would have loved to see him continue in the scarlet and grey in some form, whether QB or slot or anything that gets his explosiveness on the field.
Aperture Science, we do what we must, because we can. I miss the portal games.

Sounds like his plan is to compete with Fields in the spring (like he originally said he would) and if it becomes apparent he's not winning the job he'll make the move just like Burrow did. Won't be as smooth a transition as it was for Burrow though. It sounds like he might lose a year of eligibility.
Hmm, I don't think his plan is to stay through the spring. It's been a long time since I graduated (1998), but tOSU is still on quarters, which means that now that he's in the portal, the administration can rescind/terminate his scholarship at the end of this quarter, which methinks is prior to spring ball?
Anyone in school/recently graduated more familiar with the academic calendar?
Been on semesters since 2012ish.

If only coaches can see the portal how did that SloppyBaseballs dude get to see it? He/she looking at a coach’s Screen? That seems to imply privacy concerns.
If a player decided not to transfer after putting their name in the portal, their scholarship or financial aid could be pulled after the end of the academic term.
Shrewd play on his part, especially if he's able to graduate in May.

Isn't this only his second year? Would be a damned fast graduation.
Was fields in the Portal?
Yes, Fields was in portal
Yes, he was.
He used the Portal to get here.
Wonder what happens if Justin Fields is not eligible to play this upcoming season?
Then our QB situation is really thin for next year and a lot of this Tate bashing will be nearly laughable. Better hope Baldwin is the real deal and the line keeps him even more upright than it did Haskins this year -- a new O Line that is.
The Baldwin Bus will be leaving the station.
Yeah, that's gonna make for a rough fall. No disrespect to Matthew Baldwin, but I don't think he's on the same level as Fields, or Martell yet.
Martell making this move and making it in January suggests to me that people in the WHAC are supremely confident that Fields will win his transfer appeal. Would have liked to see him at least step up to the challenge of competing this Spring before pursuing something else, but these students have got to do what's best for them. If they're not going to get paid, we need to understand them taking steps to look out for #1, be it the transfer portal, sitting out bowl games, withdrawing from the team to heal and train for the draft.
He is still in classes. He won't leave before the end of spring because that could mess up his grades for a transfer. This just allows him to see who else might be interested. I think he competes in the spring to see where he is in the pecking order.
Wonder what happens if Justin Fields is not eligible to play this upcoming season?
Just a guess, but I'm thinking it means Fields wouldn't play...
Shandy is not beer
When is that supposed to be decided? I don't think it's likely that Fields is declared ineligible but if he is that may impact Martell's decision and keep him at OSU. Assuming he's willing to wait that long.
One 11W article quoted another writer that said the decision could come in February.
Welp, Riddell mini helmet sales to the Buckeye equipment room was discontinued today as well. That is a sure sign Tate is gone.....
Hey Cancer! This ass kicking is brought to you by the Sultan of the sythe. Give it hell CalPoppy.
I can't imagine going into the portal and coming out... he's basically dead to his teammates now. I 100000000% get why he's doing it but that's not how locker rooms work..
Hopefully it's a quick and easy transfer and both Tate and our Buckeyes can move on..

Yuck. That would not be good if he transferred to Mythigan (and I assume he could). He knows our playbook plus I don't think we really want to play against him - after all, he is a pretty good QB.

Nothing wrong with Tate exploring his options and seeing if there is a starting QB spot available. The big difference is that Joe Burrow was a graduate transfer, so sitting out a year was never a concern. I don't think that Tate is in the same boat .....

What...both Brian & Stewie are in the portal?
I would bet everything has already happened behind the scenes. I can guarantee you he already has a school he's transferring to. He's already talked to the coach of that school and worked out all the details. It'll come out in a few days the name of the school. Before he jumped in the "portal" he knew where he was going to land.
Hmmm and a week ago old tater wasn’t transferring under any circumstances. Reminds me of another kid who ran his mouth a lot, name of Manziel. Always Martell was too cocky for his own good. There’s such a thing as having a little swagger, but extreme cockiness and arrogance don’t cut it from this old coach. Bye bye Tater!!
Jack L Frysinger
Has Tate commented on his reasons? Did he see Justin Fields skill set and decide he wasn’t going to win a qb battle Or was it a I am not Day’s guy type situation?
Once upon a time in Columbus......They called me Tater

“I don’t know how many guys it takes to whoop me, but I knew how many they were going to use”
And that’s a handy piece of information to have
Who knows what was discussed with the coaches. Entering the portal just gives himself some options. He will compete in the Spring. If he loses to someone then he will transfer and sit out a year with 3 eligible seasons left. If he wins the starting job then he stays. I would do the same thing because if Fields is eligible to play right away and wins the starting job, Tate will hardly see the field the next 2 years. The dude just wants to play.
Rose Bowl or Bust
He has already used a redshirt. If he sits then he only has 2 years of eligibility.
Good read. But it failed to address the true question on everyone's mind...
His first name is actually Tathan?
Biggest thing that surprised me in all this? His full first name is Tathan...
Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.
The more you know.gif
I'm not around that much, running exhausted and lost...
I've always liked Tate and it would've been fun to see what he could do as a starter, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen. The dude can run, and by no means that justify pigeonholing him as "only" a runner, because he's got strong, accurate arm, too.
I wish Tate would have toned down his comments directed towards Fields--not because what he said was wrong, but because there was nothing to be gained form them--but I can't really blame him for exploring his options
I mean, being totally honest, if I were in his shoes, I'd have to wonder...
1) Will really, truly, honestly be given a fair shot to win the starting job?
2) Even if it's a level playing field, what if this guy beats me out? What if... he truly is the best QB in the nation, so that he narrowly beat me out, and in fact, it's so close that I'm basically one of the top three or five quarterbacks in the nation, well, should I really be OK with spending my whole college career on the bench?
That's a key consideration here, because unlike Haskins, Tate knows he might not have a pro career, at least not at QB, in which case, sure, it's easy tor us to criticize his ego, but college ball might be his only shot, and spending his career as a practice player is a big pill too swallow.
In fairness, Fields himself wasn't okay with sitting on the bench.
It's also worth noting that Urban recruited Tate, but now Meyer's gone. And when you lose your key supporter, you can't help but wonder if the handwriting is on the wall?
Now add the Haskins factor. Mind you, I love Haskins and while I can't say he's done anything wrong here, again, if you step in Martell's shoes, it's fair to wonder if there might be some politics working against you, whether internally or externally.
For starters, despite the usual mantras about "the brotherhood," Haskins openly invited an uninitiated brother to join the Buckeyes to take the job of his current 'brother"--a guy who has fought alongside him in the QB film room and in the trenches for the past two years.
And while it's easy for us to presume that Day will be fair and let "the best man win" the job, Martell knows that Haskins and Fields are part of the Quincy Avery pipeline, which has become a premier source of QB talent in college football. As such, Tate knows there will be invisible pressure on Day to indulge said pipeline... or the pipeline just might dry up for Ohio State.
Given the above factors, as well as the fact that Tate knows that there's an inherent bias and/or skepticism about his abilities because of his size, again, I can't blame him for exploring his options, even though the Buckeyes will be poorer for it.
Fact is, Nick Bosa explored his options; Haskins likewise declared eqrly for the draft, thus exploring his options; Fields did the same by transferring to Ohio State; and Ryan Day has been busy exploring all of his options since taking over, whether interviewing coaching candidates or recruiting, including offering a scholarship to Fields.
What's good for the goose is good for the gander, right?
I just wish that we would have seen how Martell would have performed as a starter, but then, I suspect we will... just probably not in a Buckeye jersey. That said, I wonder what jersey we'll see him wearing--will it be in the Big Ten?
Uh-oh... I think I hear Purdue calling.
Wish he would stay and compete. But this is neccessary if he doesnt win the job in Spring.
I wonder what Day told him?
Thus is what happens when armchair duchebags annoit a transfer laden freshman only perceived to be good, but has no concept of team and a system esp at ohio state.
Tate should be starter.
Yes, Tate read the postings on this website and decided that he would not have a chance to win the starting QB jog this fall, that's exactly what happened
So is this like the friend zone of that hot girl you like?
There is nothing more remarkable as learning to think better.
He's sealed his fate now by entering the portal. All of his bravado now comes off as a weak and hollow.
That's certainly one legit take, and I'm guessing we'll hear a lot of that, fair or not.
Another legit interpretation worth considering is that Tate consciously or unconsciously floated those comment as trial balloons to see if anybody had his back, from Ryan Day to his teammates. If so, as best as I can tell, he didn't garner a lot of support, at least not publicly.
The again, I'm sure a lot of his peers or coaches wouldn't want to put themselves in the middle of a drama. Still for what it's worth, there have been plenty of people in this forum who've expressed a fondness for Martell and wish him the best, including yours truly. Beyond that...
Heck if I know what Tate's really like behind the scenes, or what his true motive was for going public. I only know what coaches and/or players have either said on the record.
To that end, while everyone has said that Martell's a confident guy and his own man, I haven't heard anybody even remotely suggest that he's either selfish or, frankly, anything but a great teammate who's put in tons of hard work and is loaded with talent.
In other words, their attitude towards him hasn't been much different than what we saw with Joe Burrow.
Granted, should Tate skip town, it's possible that we'll suddenly hear a flood of talk about what a bad guy he is/was. But I doubt it. My guess is that most guys will simply say they completely understand the position he's in and they sincerely wish him well.
Of course, the other possibility is that Fields won't get his waiver, in which case, I'd be shocked if Tate left. The only trouble with all of that is timing. Supposedly, we'll know whether or not Fields will be eligible to play in 2019 by the end of February, so I wouldn't expect Tate to leave before then, because he's clearly the lead candidate to start if Fields can't play. BUT, BUT, BUT....
One HUGE consideration that (others might have brought up, but I haven't personally heard it yet) is WHAT IF Tate gets a transfer offer he feels that he can pass up, so he leaves campus ASAP, and then... Fields doesn't get his waiver!!!
Yikes! It could be that overnight we'd only have two QBs with Matthew Baldwin as the presumptive starter,. Frankly, there woulnd't be many options beyond that, unless, let's say, someone like Jalen Hurts transferred (NOTE: As a graduate transfer with one year of eligibility, Hurts isn't requited to get a waiver, so he could immediately play for anybody in the country this fall).
How weird would that be? I mean, imagine if at the first half of last year's Alabama-Georgia championship game someone told you, yeah, in barely more than one calendar year, both Jalen Hurts and Justin Fields will be QBs on Ohio State's roster?
Jalen Hurts put his name in the portal as well. Shea Patterson mat start sweating
After digesting this info this afternoon I am more puzzled about Tate as a competitor. If you compare Martell’s situation to Field’s situation one could indeed say Martell should have the leg up on any potential QB competition. Fields may not even be granted eligibility. Both QBs sat behind starters but at least Tate knows the offense and the team.
All that being said I go to two talking points. 1. Tate got his feelings hurt and 2. Day’s offense will be a stretch for Tate...it won’t fit his style as much as the Urban-Tebow-Barrett offense. So you could say Tate is using his head and making the best move for Tate. I get that too, then why talk all that smack. That makes him look mentally weak.
I was looking forward to watching Martell give it his best to compete.
Sooo you can stick yourself into a portal & pull out without who you are currently attached to getting upset?
"I didn't get a harrumph outta that guy!"
Yeah, If you dump on them, they usually get upset because it makes a mess of things...
Wait,...what are we talkin' about?
Well he's certainly not confident about winning the starting job I guess. Good luck to him. If that's what he wants then go get it. About time these young men have options. But TOSU has options too. Win/ win
Plenty of rumors about potential destinations - some leap out like UCLA (because of Kelly) but especially Penn State or Alabama....
Wahoo! Wahoo! Rip, Zip, Bazoo! I Yell. I Yell. For O.S.U.
So its not a portal but is a MARKETPLACE connecting buyers and sellers - available student athlete who wants to test waters for better opportunities and for schools to pick up disgruntled second string talent.
Sounds like a mess in the making to me.
Schools may not be able to stockpile talent like they once did. It kinda sucks but if you did everything the school wants and they go out and get the next big thing you might get buried on the depth chart. I don't blame them for leaving but when do you compete for your spot instead of hoping for a participation trophy. Playing time is not guaranteed. I don't know how this will affect how you recruit a position like QB. Will the ones on hand leave because you recruit one for that class? In today's society nobody wants to wait their turn, everything is now.
Its the Joe Burrow saga all over again ! We will never know what great things Burrow could have done if our man Dwayne had gotten injured.
IIRC, in Tate's one chance at extended PT(other than 1 play and out) he completed 10 consecutive passes proving he CAN PASS!
Don't start on the argument that it was against poor competition because IF the receivers can catch and be on target and the QB has time and talent to hit that target, school me on why he couldn't do it over again .
Again, if Tate leaves we will never know what he could do or how things could go wrong with an inexperienced QB (in our system) and ruin those who stayed (KJ? Malik?) hoping for a great season.
I just wish posters would just stop eating their own! These student athletes can read this negative crap. It's one thing to have a negative thought about someone and a whole other thing to put it on a public forum like twitter or boards such as this one.
Just try to be kind to one another, our world will be better for it. Try it, you'll like it!
Not the Joe Burrow saga... Joe Burrow didn’t spout off on twitter. He handled it with class and OSU returned the favor in working with him on the transfer.
I wish Tate all the best, but he needs to be humble and stay off twitter...
I think Tate believes he could win a fair competition, but I also thinks he believes that the choice has been made (or at least heavily leaning that way) to start Fields since he fits better into Day's offense. I don't blame him either way. You get passed over for a promotion at work, you start sending out resumes.
I am more than OK with all of this - he is a good kid and talented. If he stays, I would love to have him on the team - if he transfers, I wish him well. Tate is very talented and has a lot of intangibles, but he is probably not in a great situation with us.
Imagine if it was you...or your son. You would not want him on the bench his entire career. Dude NEVER lost a high school game (45-0!)and won multiple (if not mythical) National Championships.
I hope the best for him.
Problem---Tate is in fact really good----he will be great at his next stop, at West Virgina---a likely Heisman Cand. However, if Tate leaves and Fields in not granted permission to play in 2019----Gasp, could U of M win with OSU having a unknown 3rd choice QB???
