This is the low key one that iinitially popped into my hear... Chip Kelly's offense seems like a perfect fit... Couple that with the Ryan Day connection to Chip and the fact it is back closer to home near Las Vegas on the west coast. I would for sure root for UCLA if that happened.

Hurts is looking at Miami as well.  But I guess Tate needs to sit a year no matter where he goes.  I thought I had read somewhere that his old HS coach is now coaching at UNLV.   That might be a good spot for him.

HS
Atl_Buckeye72's picture

Nah....He'll get a waiver. It wasn't fair that another player came in just when it was his turn to play.

HS
mittenst8buck's picture

So he will have to sit a year? I wasn't sure because someone told me with a coaching change he thought he could play right away but I don't know the rules. So he will have to sit a year and then have 2 years of eligibility left?

HS
Triv's picture

Letter of the law says yes, he will have to sit a year. The NCAA is becoming increasingly more lenient (which is a good thing) in granting waivers for immediate eligibility, particularly for athlete's who are in good academic standing, so we'll have to wait and see if Tate applies for one.

Sorry Urban, Woody is still my favorite

UCLA current starting QB backed up Martell for 3 years in high school. Having watched Martell with elite talent around him and UCLAs QB with ucla talent I don't think Tate is an upgrade

HS
BrewstersMillions's picture

Not sure who goes where and why and Tate is probably above it, but the thought of Jeff Brohn-the future biggest threat to the Day empire-getting his hands on Tate scares the hell out of me.

Purdue has its limitations even with a coach as good as Brohm can be (63 to Auburn) but I'm more saying offensive minded guy getting his hands on a jack of all trades QB is enough to give me pause for concern-especially combined with Purdue shockingly good recruiting class.

Proudly dispensing unbridled arrogance since 1983.

HS
Triv's picture

Brohm turned down Louisville this year, but he won't spend more than one or two more years at Purdue. He keeps having offensive success, the big boys (and the NFL, see Kliff) will come calling.

Sorry Urban, Woody is still my favorite

HS
BrewstersMillions's picture

That's a rock solid point Triv. While a little older than the Nagy's, McVay's, and Kliff's of the world, offensive innovation is the new hotness in the NFL and the thoughts of college only-offensive guys being ignored is being challenged. McVay and Nagy's early success will certainly make teams stuck in their ways think.

Proudly dispensing unbridled arrogance since 1983.

HS

IIRC, OSU can block a transfer within conference?

O-H

HS
Defiance's picture

Any school can contact players in the portal. However, some conferences have rules hindering certain transfers. For example, a player from a Big Ten school is unable to transfer to another in-conference program until they complete one full academic year of residence at their current school.

This is just a quote from the article posted here on 11W .

In Tate's case, I don't believe this would apply to him since he has already completed one full academic year of residence at their current school.

but I can’t see him being available (if he indeed transfers)

How were Antonio Williams and Jack Wohlabaugh immediately eligible for transfer from Ohio State, but Martell has to sit a year? I know that Shea Patterson had 'special' circumstances in gaining immediate eligibility last season, and that Fields has some supposed unique circumstance, beyond being called a name by a UGA baseball player, surrounding his transfer, but Williams and Wohlabaugh were just two players who weren't good enough to play at Ohio State and who transferred to UNC and Duke respectively and gained instant PT waivers. Why is Martell different? I'm not saying he isn't, but why are some assuming he won't get the same benefit many others are getting from the NCAA?

UCLA... home, Chip Kelly / Ryan Day connection, the offense.

O-H

HS
BUCKEYE3M's picture

Not as unlikely as it seems.  It's possible he brought a load of college credits with him if Bishop Gorman offers dual-credit courses and he took AP classes.

One of my daughters entered college with 27 semester hours, and another with 18.  Add to that the fact that they stay in school all summer long, and he will have completed 6 semesters on campus come May, so it's possible.

Atl_Buckeye72's picture

It seems like if a kid goes back home, or at least closer to home, then the NCAA seems to give a pass. If memory serves Williams cited "family issue" (not sure if the dog ran away or what). Regardless, he is from NC so the waiver didn't surprise me. I don't know anything about Wohlabaugh. He was from Ohio, so not sure about that one. How would we look silly? Dude talked all that stuff & in the end transferred , I call that a cop out. If I were seriously committed to being the best I can be , why would I settle and transfer just because Fields has came in the picture ... that just motivates you to work harder smh

HS
Dstacify's picture

He hasn't transferred yet. My guess is he's going to compete first and see if he has a chance of beating Fields at all and then make a decision.

11 Strong.

HS
actionstanleyjackson's picture

You don't put your name in the portal unless you are ready to move now. In addition, since he graduates in May he could have just competed in the spring, seen if Fields was cleared to play and then make his decision. Doing it this way says to me he is ready to move immediately.

Stay golden, Ponyboy.

HS
silverbullet71's picture

I find it weird how people call him cocky, etc. Yet Iwatch qb1 season 2 and Fields literally says "4? I'm going to put up 8" I guess that's not cocky? The hate started the minute Fields name was rumored. It's not like.Tate just suddenly became the version we see now. Hes been who he is since highschool . The kid backed it up in highschool and imo would do so in college once given the chance. I may be wrong, but I have a strong belief that Fields was told he'd be the guy if he came here. Everyone talks about lack of loyalty when it comes to Tate, yet they are drooling over a guy who literally has none! If Tate was 6'3 people would be enamored with Martell, no matter what his twitter fingers said.

Lastly, Joe Burrow leaves and has 25 threads during the season. What's the difference? Because Burrow doesnt twitter? Who cares, it's the generation

HS
aj99's picture

Loyalty. I was disappointed to see Day make that move so early in his tenure. I understand it, but I don't like it wouldn't have done it. As a coach you want your players to trust you. I would not stay if I was Tate either. Hope we don't play against him because he's tough with a chip on his shoulder. I would love to see him end up on the west coast somewhere. I'd probably go watch him.

HS
Buckeyenurse1's picture

What move did Day make that you are referring to?

HS
saintstephen11's picture

Actually Day told them all that it is an open competition ... Tate ran from that because he feared that Fields would be given the inside track.

HS
I am Kirok's picture

Is it possible that after being at OSU for two years he knows that "open competition" means jack shit at OSU? Do we really think that an "Open Competition" between Haskins and JT would have resulted in JT winning?

HS
Atl_Buckeye72's picture

I think that without having an established incumbent, a true "open competition" would actually happen. I agree with you, there was no open competition between Haskins and JT. However, coaches are conservative by nature and will generally stick with the devil they know. How do you think we got Fields in the first place? If you believe "everyone", Fields has a much higher ceiling that Jake Fromm but Fromm is the leader of that UGA team and has their offense doing what they need it to do.

HS
Atl_Buckeye72's picture

I don't think that people are really hating on Tate. However, it is hard to ignore his very recent comments. While it isn't my style, I wasn't offended by Tate's tweets and comments. I felt like they were genuine and were coming from a very competitive and confident kid. Whether or not he can deliver on the field, time will tell. Personally, I feel like Tate is more built to run Urban's style of offense of 90% RPO's vs Day's pass heavy style.

BTW...IF I were 30 years younger, 6'4, 210, a rocket for an arm, could run a 4.4 40, and read a zone blitz then people would be enamored with me too! However, I'm not and Tate isn't 6'3...but neither is Kyler Murray and I would say that worked out :)

O-H

HS

OSU cannot block him but the B1G transfer rules state a player cannot transfer within the conference without first finishing the entire school year. If Tate wants to be gone now he wont want to wait until the end of the school year.

HS

O-H

HS

Yes, although he will have to sit out a year wherever he goes at this point. Unless he stays at OSU.

HS
kmp10's picture

Block the transfer of a player who wanted to be here but who has seemingly been told he isn't wanted? If that's what happens, talk about a shitty way to do business. IF Martell transfers, and IF Day told Martell, "Fields is my guy, so if I were you I'd go elsewhere," and IF Martell believes 'elsewhere' is within the B1G, well, he should be allowed to go anywhere he pleases. I think the intra-conference transfer blocking rule is limited to players who've yet to complete one school year, as someone states above, although I could all wet there. I understand why Day wouldn't want him in the conference, but I also understand you can't have your cake and eat it too... or at least you shouldn't be able to.

When I die, sprinkle my ashes over the 70's

He's just opening up his options so schools can contact him which gives him a better sense of where he can transfer to.

I have to think that a couple things are going on.  1) Ohio State has information that says Fields is going to available immediately and 2) Tate was told he's not the guy for Day's offense.  I just can't understand otherwise, why a guy who 10 days ago said he was staying and going to win the job to just decide it was time to take off.

The entire time his tweets and interviews really were just thrown out there to try and keep Fields from transferring in.

HS
saintstephen11's picture

HS
Brohio's picture

A few points here:
1. Tate is gone. His family being very public with their Twitter activity (specifically Rylee and Tafi) right now. He is not going to fight for his job. Based on the activity, he will be heading to Miami to join his teammates from Gorman
2. I hope we just let him go because every program has skeletons in their closet. I assume we are no different. Martell has always been and remains a loose cannon and I can see him trying to get revenge online in the typical spoiled kid fashion. He's already proven that he solves his problems on Twitter and not on the field and that's about the last thing Ohio State needs. Let him go. Wish him well, even if its disingenuously. Let's move away from this family as quickly and quietly as possible.

HS
buckeyenut74's picture

Only conclusion I can draw from this is he is scared of competing against Fields....specially after running his mouth.

HS
kmp10's picture

Maybe Day sat Martell down and told him that Fields is their guy moving forward, and then advised Martell that considering opportunities elsewhere would be in his best interest. That probably isn't in OSU's best interest, but it would be in the player's best interest, and maybe Ryan Day genuinely cares about what's best for Tate Martell. That's a conclusion that could be drawn, in addition to the conclusion you drew.

When I die, sprinkle my ashes over the 70's

HS

Poster on Bucknuts saying they have inside information from a source very close to the family insinuating that Tate (or his family) have contacted Penn State and another non-big Ten team bout transferring, with Miami 3rd.

I know these kids are 18-20 and flavors of the moment but I also won’t turn on Tate. I don’t agree with his decision but I am not going to wish him ill-will. That was my first thought of a team for him.  Based on his recent postings, it would seem like he would burn bridges when leaving and doing anything he could to validate himself.  I don't know anything about him other than what anyone on this site would have seen as a fan, but his recent antics made me think he would be more than willing to make that sort of move.

He absolutely doesn't fit TTUN's offensive style. He's not going to want to be a caretaker, handing off 25-30 times per game.

Trust me! I'm an Engineer.

He has followed, on Twitter, coaches from Miami, WVU and Auburn. Take that FWIW.

If he is as upset at Ohio State as reported, I believe he goes somewhere he can play the buckeyes. I think it will be Penn State or Michigan State, however I wouldn't rule out Cincinnati.

Playing for Dantonio would be good for the kid, but Dantonio wouldn’t touch him with a 100 foot pole. Same with Fickel. Franklin would, but I think he’s all set.

It's not fair that I put in years of practice and it's now my turn to be the starting QB and some guy comes in and takes my right away from me. I'm transferring to another University so I can start over the other guys that put in years of practice and deserve to start.

I think it’s going to be Miami. The life style fits him and his ego he has teammates down there and there’s a chance to play in a weak conference.

Miami is also desperate for play makers at quarterback.

Stay golden, Ponyboy.

More than likely Tate is sitting out this year and wouldn’t have to compete against Hurts

HS

My guess is he's not going anywhere that they're going to need him in year 1... So I think Oklahoma might be a stretch. A team like Oregon makes sense, Herbert is in his final year, he's for sure starting, Martell will be back on the west coast and can spend the year learning since he's going to have to sit.

Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.

I get it, kid wants to play he has made that clear and thinks highly of himself and he sees the writing on the wall that it will not be at OSU.  He has sat on the sidelines for 2 years with no real action to speak of, if i were to transfer, would i want to sit another year if not granted a waiver?  That would be 3 years of no game action at QB.  If waiver is denied, why not go down a level be an all star at that level and keeping your skills sharp, win lots of games with big stats and then transfer back up to D1 and go wherever you choose.  I would want to play now if in his shoes and not sit another year as a transfer.

Outside chances - Oregon State ... pretty close with Tyjon Lindsey who transferred there from Nebraska.  Also, Houston - with Holgorsen being their new head coach and the success Will Grier had running it.  Who knows - wish him the best!

Tyjon & Tate had a falling out of sorts their senior year of high school which many believe was the reason Tyjon decommitted from Ohio State.

To me TCU or WVU are no brainers - the next level to me would be either ASU / South Carolina / Duke / Washington State

Miami makes zero sense especially since they have Jaron Williams...

Oh man, all of you somehow arriving at the notion that Day told anyone that Fields is his guy and that Martell should look elsewhere need to get over your unhealthy Tater infatuation and stop letting your butthurt cloud your judgement.

There is no chance in hell Fields was made any promises or that Tate was told he wouldn't be given a fair opportunity to win the job.  At the same time, Martell's not stupid.  He knows his particular skill set was more suited to an Urban run offense than a Day run offense.  In that respect we all may be missing where the real competition was going to come from.  From what I've seen of Fields, it's going to take some work to break his run-first tendencies and turn him into a Troy Smith like deadly-assassin who only used his legs as a last resort when his reads broke down.  Tate Martell clearly has an advantage there.  He also has an overwhelming advantage in knowing the offense.

There is, however, another quarterback on the roster who is rumored to have similar accuracy and timing as Dwayne Haskins, and no run-first tendencies.  I'm talking of course about Matt Baldwin, who could well be the dark-horse player that Tater may think has skills that better fit Day's offense.

Although I'm calling him "Tater" now, I don't really have anything against Tate Martell deciding to go elsewhere.  Quarterback is a different animal.  It matters a whole lot who your coaches are and what they like to do on offense.  And it's not always "fair", even though coaches will never say anything publicly to give that impression.  There really only can be "one" at a time.  You're either that one, or you're the one coming up.  It's difficult to have any players in between and make it work.  So coaches often have to make some highly subjective decisions before they've been able to adequately evaluate players with real game time.

HS
ShawneeBuck74's picture

Agreed. Don’t sleep on Baldwin. His skill set is the most like Haskins and Mason Rudolph, the successful OkState QB for Yurcich.

It took until year 3 for Troy Smith to truly break from his “run first” mentality.  And 2006 Troy was awesome.

That said, I’m a fan of a quick strike simple/fast offense a la 2014. JTB was at his best when it was “read-read-run” and we were going uptempo.

Fields doing the same thing would be a sight to behold.  OKState’s offense moved fast and isn’t over complicated.

There is a piece missing somewhere along the way. I can’t imagine Day Saying anything to anyone about playing time. And then I cannot imagine Tate just up in quitting for no reason after all the hard work and he hasn’t complained at all really, about waiting his turn. He is absolutely correct that it is going to take a lot of time to learn that offense and he has that huge edge you mentioned.

Agree totally on the first point.  A lot of people are somehow assuming Tate was told something regarding his place in the pecking order, so he's high-tailing it out of Columbus to find a better opportunity.  I don't see how that is even feasible.

There's no way Day is going to make any decisions about who he is plugging in at QB1 when he doesn't even know if Fields will be able to play next year.  Birm had a very insightful writeup about the situation.  It sounds like it comes down to the fact Martell believes he deserves to be named the starting QB, but he feels like Fields will be given preferential treatment instead.  Meaning, he is now under the impression the job is up for grabs rather than him getting first chance.

In the end, Martell doesn't want to compete.  He thinks he's already earned it.  That's now how big-boy college football works.

Are we totally the Martell transfer wasnt coming either way ???... Wouldnt seem that way, id think he'd put his name in the portal before January 8-10 (Name offically went in the 10th, OSU had 48 hours to put his name in the portal after being notified)... But, it has been rumored he almost transferred other times...

If Tate stays at least until after the spring game, it would be interesting if the coaching staff would split the team into, Team Scarlet RPO/Read Option offensive with Wilson/Martell on one side vs Team Grey Pro/Air Raid offensive with Yurcich/Fields on the other side.

HS
NoVAsmitty's picture

No way will they do this. You don’t take reps away from the QBs who want to compete and stay with the team. I think we’ll hear this week that Day has told Tate to get the hell out of here!

Looks like Austin Kendall is entering the transfer portal...not sure how he’ll do if he couldn’t hack it against OU’s “basic defense” in practice. They said they wouldn’t take another QB but that probably changes things now and may open up a spot for Tathan.

Tathan will be a Heisman finalist if he goes to Oklahoma and stays healthy. I would not wish him that "well". Hopefully that doesn't happen.

Most of Tate’s Twitter likes are of people encouraging him to go to Miami (Miami Martell) which also gives more validity to the whole Martell Cartel moniker, no?

Theres a big Bishop Gorman to Miami movement/push.

He’s follow coaches from Miami, Auburn, WVU, and TCU.

I think Tate wants the quickest path to the field. Miami does not run his style of offense with Dan Enos coming in. Plus they have Jarron Williams there who Tate would have to beat out.

WVU makes sense because he could plug and play and there isn't much competition.

Stay golden, Ponyboy.

HS

It is all about playing time. WVU is in the Big 12 and Neal Brown is a heck of an offensive coach and loved by his players. Would give him exposure.

That said, TCU, Auburn, and Mississippi State both have offenses that would suit Tate and have needs at QB.

According to 247 Martell is expected to choose next week where he will transfer too.  He is down to 3 schools.  I guess he will not be here to spring ball.

1.  West Virginia
2.  Miami
3.  Louisville

I live in San Diego and started watching QB1 tonight on Netflix. Didn't realize the family lived in Poway and then moved to Vegas so Tate could play at Bishop Gorman.
