Any Updates on Sheffield And/or Arnette?

I have no idea why they haven't announced yet, but I'm hoping both come back. If they are good enough to start, they will. If not, they won't. With injuries and ejections from targeting penalties, I don't think you can have too many talented and experienced defensive backs.

I dont want them taking snaps away from more talented corners. We have recruited the position incredibly well outside of 2019. Trust in the young talent or they will transfer

Are they taking classes?  What is the deadline to drop out without impacting the APR?  Hopefully, they make up their minds by then.

HS

The deadline's coming up soon.

Which means it'll likely fly by Arnette's head without him ever turning around to see it.

I LOL'd

Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.

and Sheffield will hold on as long as he can until he decides.

Deadline is the 15th and losing them would be addition by subtraction. Wade and Okudah are just better.

Stay golden, Ponyboy.

I hope with Coach Day, these two do not automatically start if they come back.  It frankly just hurts the development of the younger, higher skilled players.  Okudah and Wade should be starters with Arnette playing nickle.  Sheffield has poor technique IMO.  I actually hope he goes pro this year so the younger guys get a chance.  Until I see it, I just won't believe the coaches will play the "best" players with the highest ceiling.  Hope I am wrong.  Same thing can be said for the LB - even more so

New coaches coming in will get a look at em. ..see how well they can improve or not. Let the best players play.

Sheffield can stay......

Arnette needs to go, either declare or just go to the end of the bench.  He is the worst corner in college football today.  Either refuses to tackle, or is incapable of it.

I can't believe Arnette was kept on the field after so many missed tackles...or should I say trying to knock someone down or out with a shoulder...as far as Sheffield, it could go either way and I wouldn't be upset, he has his ups and downs but i have never been a big fan since watching his first game with us.

Sheffield should go. While I don’t think he’s great, he’s going to post a ridiculous 40 time and some team is going to fall in love.

HS

It's a measurables game, and he has the right stuff in that regard. An NFL team will take a flier on his size and speed combo.

They might be waiting to find out who their position coach would be.

Shef is rated as the #7 corner and Arnette the #9 corner in this draft. Combine numbers will likely improve their stock. One mock draft I saw had Shef being a late first-round choice.

Looks like Cris Carter is trying to convince Arnette to stay a year (St. Thomas Aquinas connection).

I think they both go unless they believe Hefly can truly improve their draft stock.

I'm excited to see Okudah and Wade start, with Williamson at nickel (he was in the mix before he got hurt, I believe) and Banks and Johnson and Brown etc.

I think that Arnette needs to focus solely on football and be coached by pros and be in a zone coverage scheme.

He’s talented. Not the best in press man, though. I think that he comes across as not 100% focused and needs the “job” without all the other college life distractions.

So, Cris... thanks but stop!

Was this on The Onion?

He will likely have the fastest 40 time, so would not be a total shock for a team to gamble on that.

HS

and yet he still has to hold receivers to keep up with them. Kendall Sheffield is not going in the first round.

The #7 and #9 corners in the draft? Are you sure they didn’t mean the #7 and #9 corners on Ohio State’s roster??

HS

Arnette is gonna run like a 4.67, the combine wont help him

HS
WoullyBear's picture

If Arnette comes back he will get Dante Booker’ed. A senior and former starter thats there for depth and ST. His time has passed. I think Sheff could make some strides but I’m indifferent with him.

I would drive Arnette to a agents office myself just to get him out of here.

Whether or not they leave or stay I'm just hoping Day plays the best players at all times, regardless of seniority or previous year snap count, etc...   Wade and Okudah have proven, IMO, to be much better options.

I heard from a solid source that both of them ran right past the agents office and neither turned their heads around to see it.  Therefore, who knows?

HS

It may be anecdotal, but Sheffield seemed to regress from a pretty good start.  There were a ton of injuries, new players in the rotation, and obviously questionable coaching and scheming.  I'd like to see him under the tutelage of Hafley, and a new scheme.

HS
KeithMC33's picture

While i assume both will declare, it's smart for them to wait and see who else declares and what the coaching situation on the defensive side of the ball looks like. Right now they are both looking like 2nd or 3rd day picks unless they either blow up at the combine and/or pro day, so there's definitely a benefit to staying and building up their respective draft stock. I think with the coaching staff changes you'll see a MUCH better secondary than what we had last year. I do agree with others that Okudah and Wade are going to be studs, but i wouldn't overlook Sheff and Arnette if they return next year.

HS
Hanawi_'s picture

I wouldn't be sad to see either go, but I also think a different defensive scheme might suit their talents better. Neither is a press man corner. They don't have the ball skills to do it. However, I do think both might be effective in a zone where they can read the QB more and react.

Sheffield is definitely the better of the two and I think he had an ok year. Arnette was not good, and really should be a safety.

HS
BuckeyeJay's picture

I think Sheffield could be really good in a zone scheme with his size and speed and willingness to tackle.

HS

I hear Arnette's diploma will be printed on yellow paper and thrown at his feet so that he knows it's his.

HS

I think Sheffield would've been better served as a safety before White emerged. The dude has good size and great speed, and you'd think letting him play center field with that kind of speed and range where he just has to observe his deep zone and plays the ball instead of a WR ala Malik Hooker, that he would've excelled much more in that position.

I know Sheffield is track fast but I haven't seen it carry over to the football field at all. Dude is ALWAYS a step behind the receiver which is one reason he doesn't turn around for the ball. If he stays hopefully the new coaches can teach him some damn technique. If he leaves his 4.3 at the combine will get him drafted in the 3rd round. I'm just ready to have our corners playing up to their first round talent whomever that might be.

I agree 100%... big time difference between Straight Ahead track speed and speed on a football field.

HS

I am surprised Sheffield has not moved to safety.  He has the speed to go side to side and he is big enough to make some big hits.
