Need him now that Tate is apparently in the portal.
@birm @alexgleitman @jbook37 im being told Tate Martell is in Transfer Portal pic.twitter.com/WFstrDVrEL— FantasyNoob (@SloppyBaseballs) January 10, 2019
Headed to the U
Baldwin Bus; not sure how much of a case Fields has here to play immediately. Hopefully this tweet is wrong and Tate competes.
Fields will be granted eligibility in February.
You’re a little off-base he has a very good case.
He has no case. Grow some thicker skin.
Screw you. That’s a kid being racially harassed in the Deep South.
This is just a bad take.
Go1, he has no case? None? The highest graded recruit we’ve ever had with no case to start. That’s definitely a take. If we wins the job come Fall, I will want to see you explain yourself.
Can confirm that Tate Martell is now in the NCAA transfer portal. He’ll begin to explore options outside of Ohio State — believe Miami and West Virginia are two schools that are worth watching.— Jeremy Birmingham (@Birm) January 10, 2019
Wow, this is the first I’m hearing any of this. I’m not a fan, but I can’t blame him. Just sad it had to happen to someone like him who was so loyal and a good dude through all of this.

Why would Tate do this before the NCAA rules on Fields? Also, does he also think he can transfer and not have to sit out a year? He should follow Joe Burrow's lead and stay and compete to be the starter, and then only transfer if someone else is named starter after Spring Football.
Burrow was a graduate transfer and didn't have to sit out. If Martell waits until after spring ball and is made to wait a year - he will have to miss spring ball next year with his new team. It makes total sense for him to do this quickly if he can.
In think tathan can play immediately under the head coaching change rule .

Lost seasons of Braxton Miller? I hope so by seeing that senior video. With a better arm.

I'm not ready to hand him the starting job yet... He's talented, but can he lead THE Ohio State on the field? QB competitions exist for a reason.
Apparently someone thinks you should hand him the starting job now!? +1 to offset
His HS Oline didn’t donhim any favors either.

+1 for the DV, I guess Dilly Dilly and National Championships aren’t popular with some us...
Dilly dilly is stupid, but I don’t see how anyone can be against titles.
Got all the measurables, has a coach that can develop qb’s and has a lot of WR talent to utilize. If this young man can pick up on the system quickly and earn his teammates trust and respect, I believe we all will be happy he has chosen to bring his talents to the Buckeyes.

I still would love for someone to explain why he did not displace Fromm with all of these abilities. Was it because Smart was not comfortable replacing his starter from the previous year who is clearly a good qb but not elite? Or is there some growth needed between the ears when facing complex schemes that led to turnovers and bad decisions in practice that Smart said the risk was not worth the reward this year?
I also get from Fields standpoint that if it was about not being willing to move on from Fromm then the reality is that, barring injury, Fromm would be the starter the next two years because Smart was not likely to make it an open competition next year and I cannot see where his draft stock would be very high next year as a junior.
I don't buy one goddam drop of gas in the state of Michigan!
That is one eerily familiar post, Philly. Can't quite place where I've seen that circumstance, where the HC has a favorite and plays him no matter how ridiculously talented the back up is, minus the actual transfer. Hmmm. I'll need to think about where I may have last seen that...
Maybe I can help......... Tebow vs Newton. Wow, what a plethora of talent. Newton clearly better though Tebow not shabby in college.
Then maybe, just maybe JT vs Lord of BIG Record Keepers (aka Haskins). I'm just guessing. S font implied.
And here's a new one..... Mcalfrey vs the guy they call Lord Shea. Though this one not quite as obvious, and the talent level overall is lacking.
WOW, are you out in LEFT FIELD on this, talk about having NO CLUE AT ALL!
Newton was not going to beat out Tebow in his freshman season as that was the year Tebow as a Sophomore won the Heisman that season. Newton severely injured his ankle in the season opener and prior to that Urban openly stated that he planned to go to a 2 QB system. Newton took a medical redshirt that season. That 2008 season, Tebow led them to a 13-1 record winning the BCS national championship that year.
2009 might have been the year for Newton at Fla but Newton got arrested for stealing a laptop and was dismissed from Florida.
No sane coach on EARTH is going to sit a kid that won a title and the Heisman.
You WIN with people.
S font implied went for the entire comment. Then I thought of the Michigan duo. So I can understand the issue. My bad. You are not going to replace a heisman winner with another stud, even if the stud is a stud. Although, I will say, Newton is a better quarterback than Tebow. Probably both in college and certainly in the pros. But you are not going to replace the heisman winner. Just trying to have some fun with it. All is good.
Cam Newton < Tebow in championships. They chose right there. Back to back.
Sorry, you don't change GREAT starting QB's with the HOPE that the next greatest thing MIGHT get you another few TD's. You don't risk an 12-1 season on the outside chance that perhaps the new guy might be a tad better because you are much more likely to turn that 12-1 season in to a 10-3 season. Other than OSU LB's that might be the exception to common sense and intelligence
A "tad" better?!
Urban Meyer 4 Jim Harbaugh 0
Well you do if you want to win National Championships the last two seasons.
Go Bucks, Deacs, Panthers, Braves
You'd have to have a GREAT starting quarterback to begin with.
Ignorance isn't bliss for the rest of us.
Are you serious? We literally had this exact same scenario with JT and Haskins last year. Furthermore, just because Fields is an outstanding prospect doesn’t mean he was ready to play over a very good QB as a true freshman. With his talent and then now being coached by Ryan Day, he’s going to be a superstar here.
@OSU069 - Not sure if your post is in response to mine or someone else's. If mine, I was being sarcastic. So, no, not serious.
Haha no my bad it was in response to phillynut questioning why fields couldn’t beat out Fromm.
Based on the timeline, I got the sense that Fields committed early on, and early in Smart's' tenure at GA before he had an opportunity to see how Smart coached. Fromm is talented, but still looks more like a system QB to me. Hand it off, audible to a better play, don't make mistakes - IOW - don't lose the game.
Hmm, tons of run highlights.
He usually entered the game with the Dogs comfortably in the lead. Entirely possible Kirby told him not to throw.

Watched some tape...pretty much one read and done...then off to the races. Behind Trevor here...but just takes study and reps. One thoughtful thing Tate said...takes time to maximize the offense.
take a look at him in the elite 11 7v7:
I actually think Troy was physically a perfect dual threat prior to his senior year. Easily a 4.5 guy in 2004 and had a cannon. He seemed to put on a bit too much weight in 2006 and wasn’t nearly as fast or quick running the ball. He also didn’t need to run.
I seem to remember Troy returning kicks for a time early in his career before he was the starter.
Troy also immediately stuck out to me as the prototype equal run/pass talent.
I was thinking the same thing. Tressel didn’t have a RPO offense so running for the QB was really only on an if needed basis. With guys like Ginn, Gonzo, and Holmes (and Hartline, maybe you’ve heard of him) he didn’t need to run much, especially his senior year. But when he was first seen at QB for the Bucks he ran quite a bit.
We've always had the best damn band in the land...

I think that Justin just realized he would develop better in Day's system. Even if he was ineligible his first year, he would be in a better position development wise.
Disappointed about Tate seeking transfer. He said he would compete and he should compete. He would be added to the list of outstanding backup QB's that tOSU relied on to win. Why lose a year? Get a degree and then transfer. It worked fine for Joe. Day must have had the talk.
I would love to see Tate stay and change to a HB/Wr but it’s not going to happen. Part of the reason for the transfer, my guess is that Tate feels a bit betrayed and part of it is that he knows what Fields is. He is as elite as elite gets, I love Tate’s skill set but there won’t be any competition come spring.
If you are to watch some of the Elite 11 videos and read what the QB experts are saying Fields may be the best QB that the B1G has ever had. Now of course that has to be proven on the field but that the type of conversation we will be having in a few years. I’m sorry to say Tate is as good as gone if not now then by spring.
If you haven't watched the series QB1 on Netflix (another 11w user put me onto this), go do it. Fields is on Season 2. The first time I watched him pass my jaw dropped open. OMG! Leadership was on display. You just kinda love the kid, like everything about him.
FWIW - Season 1 featured Jake Fromm and our "own" Tate Martell. Fromm came off very lovable - great leader and competitor. Tate came off as a privileged jerk who you want to punch in the face almost as much as you want to punch his Dad, Al. Could have been the director/producer setting them up for a hack job, but that is how it came off.
Character means a lot to me. This series kinda showed me some stuff. I'm on the Fields Freeway

We have a future NC game MVP on our hands!!!!
When do we play the tarheels?
National Championship game.
His recruiting ranking gets thrown around a lot. He has a higher recruiting ranking than Fromme but didn't beat him out. Hopefully Martell is just keeping his options open and we have a competition.
Negativity is a choice.
This is what I am hoping for as well!
OMG. After watching this tape of Fields from high school, I understand why Martell is leaving. I know it was high school, but an accurate pass is an accurate pass. He can lumber too.
Next season is the most anticipated season for me since 2013.

While I love and admire character. There are different kinds of it. Tate is extremely confident and that comes across as arrogant maybe. And maybe when everyone has been telling an undefeated his whole life QB that he can’t do it, he has to stand straight up and say he can. Which comes off as being a jerk maybe. If he comes in spring and doesn’t win the job, then I don’t blame him for leaving. He has been here and wants it. But he needs to stay and compete or it looks like he is running away.
Exactly. When I watched Fields on QB1, it reminded me of Tate the season before. Both very confident.
Justin's Hudl videos are no better than Tates. In my opinion, Tate's videos and achievements are more impressive.
Lots of talk about how great Justin is but he didn't win the starting job.
Tate never lost a game in High School. 0 losses and they played the top High Schools in the country.
I don't blame Tate for entering Transfer Protocol but but Justin was a backup at Georgia and there is no guarantee he will win the starting job at tOSU.
1. Coach is always right.
2. See rule #1.
FWIW, Tate also didn’t win the starting job. So there’s that...
Truth! Fields didn't win the job over a guy that just lead his team to within one play of winning the National Championship. Tate didn't win the job to a guy that had never started a game in college yet. Tate also played High School Football in Nevada(less talent overall) while Fields played in Georgia(lots of talent overall).
Also a little confused with people saying Tate never lost in High School. His wiki page states this. Martell attended Poway High School, the local high school where he grew up, but was only able to lead them to a 4-7 season. He then transferred to Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, Nevada..
Was he not in high school at at that point yet?
Hence why Joe Burrows was and is always impressive to me as a high school QB, he played for his hometown school and went up against some pretty tough competition during the playoffs, if they do not have Joe - Athens has no chance, he gave them one!
Most of these QBs are hard to judge because they are rarely facing teams with EQUAL talent to their own. I not just believed yet KNEW Joe could compete because I recognized what he had on his team and what he faced on his opponents!
West Virginia and The U?
They have new coaches yet?
I'm not around that much, running exhausted and lost...
The U hired Manny Diaz back. I think they ran into the airport as his plane for Philadelphia was about to depart, like Ross chasing Rachel.
Tailgate Fare Historical Archive
It's difficult enough to have kept track of all things Ohio State lately.
I do think Fields gets the ok, (somewhat) like Shea O'Pat up north.
I like Fields, and I like Martell...guess we'll all do what we have to do.
I was Team Tate, but this was all handled very poorly.
Fields first tweet will read something like this “I haven’t even thrown a pass yet bro and you leavin already?” Come on now Tate where’s all this I’m not afraid of competition? Time to man up.
Of course, now that he's at Ohio State he may change his answer...
It's a stretch to find a past Ohio State quarterback to match the potential Fields possesses
The pain of discipline or the pain of regret, take your pick
He could hit the fans in the stands like nobodies business!
Fromm played 4 tough teams this year and lost to 3 of them. Not all his fault, but still.
This will go down as a monumental F up by Kirby Smart.
Not an insider...but Fields (IMHO) didn’t understand the offense to the same extent as Fromm. Fields just needed more time and reps. With that he is going to NYC for Heisman consideration.
Maybe. But college coaches who are winning big are unlikely to make changes to a true Frosh QB with a winner on the field. A million scenarios to back that up. "MAYBE" (a zillion of those floating around) Smart made it implicitly or explicitly clear that Fields was going to have to wait his turn... Fields believe his time is NOW and isn't willing to wait 1-2 more years, especially after getting a "get out of jail free" card from the baseball racist. I've no problem with that scenario. Let's find the best QB willing to play for Coach Day and see if we can get us ALL that CFP Va---a Trophy we want so bad!!
Looks like Pryor. I can't wait to see this kid on the field.
Better thrower. Training and coaching much better now...part of the reason year 1 guys can start and play in the nfl now.
I watched the Pryor vs. Oregon bowl game (2009 I think) last week. It had been a while since I watched a game from that era. Two things stuck out (all the more obvious given what I saw of our team in 2018):
- How much Pryor carried that offense. We weren't that good.
- How poor Pryor's throwing mechanics were. Butt ugly watching him compared to Haskins.
Here's hoping that Fields is better than Pryor.
Can we get this guy some buckeyes gear and a photo shoot? Sick of looking at all these Georgia uniforms.
Sounds good to me.
Very excited about Fields. Of course, my worrier self keeps wondering what happens if the NCAA does not grant the waiver AND Tate transfers to another school! Then what?
If Fields is this kind of a talent then why couldn’t he beat out Fromm? I watched Fromm and UGA a bunch of times this season and thought that he was a solid QB but more of a game manager at times.
Fromm had just taken the team to within one play of a National Championship, there was no way that he wasn't going to be the starter. It is like saying why didn't Haskins beat out Barrett. Haskins is and always was obviously the better QB talent, but still sat 2 years behind Barrett.
Also most experts expect Fromm to be a future first round pick. So it isn't like Fields was behind some nobody.
Also just like when Tua replaced Hurts and Lawerence replaced Bryant.
The big difference is that literally no on thinks that Hurts or Bryant are going to NFL QBs. Tua, Lawrence, and Fromm will all be most likely 1st round draft picks.
This is gonna be one fantastic season - too bad it's just so far away.
Go get'em Cal Poppy - we are behind you !!
It's not a rivalry .............. it's a wreckoning.
I’m so curious how this “God’s gift to the QB position, could not beat out a merely decent Jake Fromm. Fields also must have lacked confidence in beating out Fromm next year. Isn’t this a bit strange for one considered to be our “savior”?
Yeah I was wondering the same thing. Looking like Day better be right about this kid.
Fromm is going to be a 1st round draft pick so I don't know where this just decent comes from.
This article was published 9 days ago and the last bit says "Fromm has a chance to be the No. 1 pick in 2020, but he also has plenty of competition as NFL teams continue to evaluate the entire quarterback class."
Same can be said for Haskins and Barrett last year.
Martell couldn't beat out a guy who had not started a single college game (Haskins). Fields didn't beat out a guy who led UGA to within a play of the national title as a true freshman the prior year. B1G difference.
TOSU WR corps should be licking their chops...

Screw Fields. He is unproven. Tired of losing good players that want to be here and can play, but dont kiss the right ass.
Martell is literally done less than Fields in his college career while being in college for an entire year longer so I don't understand if you are trying to say that Martell is more proven or what you are trying to say here.
Cant wait to see Fields in S & G. He has all the tools to be really special. He has that 'it' factor in spades if you have seen his any of his youtube clips. He will have a plethora of talent with Dobbins/Teague, Hill/Olave, Berry/Ruckert etc. to get the ball to. The hype reminds me of Pryor coming in his freshman year. Spring game can't get here soon enough.

No pressure Justin, we're only expecting you to run like Braxton Miller and pass like Dwayne Haskins. :P

Wow. I know it's high school but damn. He's a freak. He flicks his wrist and it goes 50 yards.
Is this an earlier article that was updated? Time is beyond strange, but the article states he was granted eligibility today and it is dated 10 Jan?
Beat everyone, in every sport, all the time!!!
And most of the comments are from January too. When they called it a transfer "portal," they weren't kidding!
