You're forgetting about the not insignificant portion of the fanbase doing the whole "we didn't want them anyway, we're better off without them" thing. We know obviously that this is untrue. But there are a lot of them trying to do that.

I watched an _ichigan fan on YouTube this morning that was just distraught over losing Mattison.  The video was made before losing Washington too.  I guess both of them are excellent coaches and recruiters per this fan.  This guy told TTUN fans to quite lying to themselves that this poaching of 2 quality coaches, by your enemy, was alright.

I was at this game and it was warranted.   UM players were throwing punches after a kick return and the refs did nothing.  UM players acted like straight up thugs - which is NOT the norm.  Say what you want about UM, but they usually are respectful of the game.   I was so furious - watch at the end of this - UM players were grabbing facemasks and it was "off setting."

Man the NFL is literally just parody for the sake of parody itself.

Nothing against Kingsbury but the only thing he ever proved is he can score a lot of points and still lose. What is with this idea that you just hire a young offensive minded coach and all your problems are solved?

The cardinals will regret this one

Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.

HS

Exactly.

Can I get fellow 11W posters to start hashtagging my handle across social media as a HOT NFL head coach candidate.  I think that will get me some interviews.

HS
CieGrant_Blitz's picture

Not if he is able to hire a great DC.  The NFL is different in that other than Belichick and maybe Sean Payton there really aren't any CEO type coaches anymore.  You're either an offensive guy or defensive guy... look at the offensive guys paired w/ great DCs and you see a lot of success-- Matt Nagy + Vic Fangio,  McVay + Wade Phillips, Doug Pederson + Jim Schwartz, Frank Reich + Matt Eberflus in Indy....

HS
Extramedium's picture

There aren't, but there should be. If you look at the success Billy and Sean have had

HS
Sampson8080's picture

Fortunately there is only one Bill Belichick. And Peyton focuses most of his energy and time to the offense.

HS
AZ Buckeye13's picture

True...it really didn't work out for the Rams at all.

HS
RunEddieRun1983's picture

The rams sold their soul to snag every named free agent in the NFL to put on that squad, and most of them are rentals for a short period of time. They just backed the brinks truck up to Aaron Donald, so the real measuring stick for them will be in 2 years, regardless of who the DC is, how do they draft and how do they utilize those players?

They got a good, young offensive minded coach, but look at that roster... They can't keep every one of those guys. Talk to me about the rams in 2-3 years, and if they've sustained that success I'll concede.

Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.

HS
AZ Buckeye13's picture

They did kind of mortgage the future but they have been good the last two years and probably for a couple more. I would take that as a Bengals fan...LOL.

HS
RunEddieRun1983's picture

I can't blame you, but I'm kind of a roster snob. I'm an Eagles fan, and we, by and large, got the superbowl last year with players we drafted and cultivated with the exception of a few key positions.

Bastardizing the future to get the hot ticket free agents, in my book, is never a good play.

Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.

I'm more blown away by how quickly the NFL has gone from 'that college stuff won't work here in big boy football land' to hiring a recently fired college head coach from a middle of the road school like Texas Tech.  As someone who's argued for years that NFL offense were boring and uncreative af and that they should be implementing so much more of the spread innovations from college ball this is by far the more incredible development.  I hope Kliff does great.

HS

Exactly.  The biggest selling point for Kingsbury to the NFL was probably Patrick Mahomes.  Hats off to Andy Reid for evolving his offensive philosophy too- guy deserves to finally win a SB.

HS
buckeyenative01's picture

The prevailing thought here in Arizona is that if he doesn't have to worry about recruiting and can focus on coaching, maybe he won't be so bad?

But who are we kidding? This is the Kardinals we're talking about. They make the Bengals look competent.

HS
Kurt's picture

It's hard to say where and when the spread revolution began in the NFL but I'd venture to guess it was when Philly rolled the dice in hiring Chip Kelly.  As everyone knows it didn't work for him but they just won the Super Bowl last season and from what I've understood Pederson kept a lot of what Chip was doing offensively in place and I think even some of the coaches on Chip's staff remained.  Then obviously Andy Reid started melding the West Coast with all kinds of college spready stuff.  Both teams have won a lot of games and that's all it takes.

I mean, it's mind boggling.  A few short year's ago people were saying 'you can't run a zone read or a speed option in the NFL! the defenses are too good and too fast!'  LOOOOOOL.

(I just wish the Browns - a team with NOTHING to lose - were the ones hiring Kliff...)

HS
Extramedium's picture

I know, its like they forgot the guys on the offensive side of the ball are pretty good and pretty fast too.

HS
fear_the_nut70's picture

Many derisively call them the Retardnals here.  If you look at their history, but for pulling Kurt Warner off the trash heap (and they were gonna make him the back up to a ball room dancer), which was getting butt lucky, this franchise has been an absolute disgrace.  Because Warner got them to a SB, this confused people into thinking this was a brand new team.  It isn't.  You can tell it's not when ownership doesn't change, and it is still a Bidwell running the team.  When an organization fires a coach after one year, they are telling you they don't know what they are doing.  They either don't know how to hire a coach, know when to fire him, or both.  Sure enough, follow this up with a guy who had one college job where he had a losing record and was fired (and don't bother with, its Texas Tech.  Mike Leach won there, Urban won at Bowling Green.  Good coaches win wherever they go, and Kliff was there when Texas was down and A&M had left.  And for christ sakes, he had Mahomes and still didn't win much).  This is gonna end poorly out here; next time, both the coach and the GM will be fired. and it likely doesn't take 2 years.

You are entitled to you own opinion, not your own facts.

HS
cricejr's picture

Let's see...Saban: great in college, sucked in the NFL. Jimmy Johnson: Great in college, great in the NFL. Pete Carroll: Great in college, good in the NFL.  Bobby Pertrino: Good in college, sucked in the NFL. Kingsbury, Average in college, ??? in the NFL.  The point is that one thing does not always translate to the other.

I guess it's easy to mock the NFL, they make themselves mockable.  But to assume that ones performance in one is equal to performance in the other when the means of operation are dissimilar doesn't make sense.

I bleed scarlet...literally

HS
Extramedium's picture

And then you have a guy like Bill Belichik who sucked in the NFL, and is now a living legend in the NFL.  I think at that level when there is a lot more parity among the players, it has more to do with health of the entire organization top to bottom and to whether or not a good coach can get anything going.

Silver - exactly!  Being an old man, I remember the massive hype around a 4/5 star QB stud named Justin Zwick... he was all you heard about 24/7 and many were already dusting off the shelves for the championship trophies that were guaranteed to follow. That same year, the last person to commit was a 3 star QB named Troy Smith!  Zwick ended up being a COMPLETE bust and Troy, well, we all know how that ended!

The best thing about Pastafarianism? It is not only acceptable, but advisable, to be heavily sauced

HS
andretolstoy's picture

Zwick wasn't a bust. No one expected Troy to do what he did and that wasn't the easiest of transitions.

Besides, at great as Troy was, he seemed to always have an 'issue' every so often pop up because of bad choices. In any case, Zwick most likely would have done well if he transferred, and probably should have.

If you die before you die, then you won't die when you die.

HS
Arizona_Buckeye's picture

Well - given the hype coming in and what happened - he wasn't all that impressive, opposed to a complete bust! He never, ever lived up to the hype, whether that was his fault or just the ridiculous levels of expectations!

I'll take a "bust" over a human being with moral and ethical shortcomings. Smith is a real piece of work...

HS

Outside of the DUI a couple of years ago, what has Smith done that’s immoral or unethical? I hadn’t heard anything.

HS
SEQUOIA473's picture

The rampant talk of sleeping with his teammate's girlfriend before the national title game against UF? The multiple DUI's? Very selfish.

HS
Sampson8080's picture

That talk always seemed like fan excuses to explain away the talent different in the lines that we saw against UF. I've never seen anything real to prove it.

HS
SEQUOIA473's picture

No, I think the main issue with his performance was due to his being away from the team and not practicing while doing his Heisman tour. That has shown to be a distraction with many winners.

HS

I assume you don't have any of those moral and/or ethical shortcomings

HS

I don’t believe it’s pious. I didn’t mention the drugs that were found on him, twice in a years span of both DUI’s which is another story. I can't be the only one thinking this "QB battle" will turn out similar to the one with Haskins and Burrow, can I? Only in this case Tate is a year away from graduating and if in fact he does become QB2, it won't make sense for him to transfer this season so he'd wait until after the season to transfer and who knows how the QB spots around the country will fall.

"Come on, you sons of b!tches! Do you want to live forever?" -- Dan Daly, WWI

HS
iowabuckeyes's picture

I always hate to speculate about transfers but if Tate were to not win the starting job, if he graduates in May 2020, he’d still have two years of eligibility ala Burrow. And we can be sure someone will be happy to take him. Personally, if Fields wins the job, I’m hoping Tate will be open to moving to another position, e.g., slot receiver. There has to be a way to get him on the field (no pun intended).

HS
AZ Buckeye13's picture

I really don't think that Tate could play the slot over the guys that we have now. Of course, that depends on his foot speed because he is an elusive runner.

HS
MassiveAttack's picture

Why don't they give Tate some H-back looks, if he doesn't win the starting position?  With his throwing ability it would give RPOs another wrinkle.

Would that mean taking out Hill/McCall/Gill to give the ball to Tate at the H? If so, i'd rather him just be our backup qb..

HS
BbBnD's picture

I highly doubt Tate is willing to move on from QB. He’ll probably end up transferring if he loses QB1. He wouldn’t be starting next year either way if that’s the case so he might as well start leaning the new playbook. I’d prefer he stayed to continue competing, but I wouldn’t blame him if he left.

HS
Extramedium's picture

Because we already have multiple guys who are better prepared to play that position

HS

It’s got to really suck be a fan Up There.  I was beginning to get worried that their successes this year were a Harbinger (pun intended) of doom for of the cycle of spread offenses, but it seems Jimmy jumped the gun.

I think the power run heavy beefy 1-2 TE Oline phone booth offenses will catch on again but it may not be for  another 20-30 years.  The Single Wing forced a spread out defense with faster (lighter) defenders from the early 1900’s to the 50’s.

From the 50’s to the 60’s the T formation / I formation started to take advantage of defense built to spread out and stop the Single Wing by over powering them.

Single Wing concepts started making a comeback in the early 2000’s taking advantage of defenses geared to stop the Power I.

If you want to be an early adopter of the next cycle it almost seems to me that you need the personnel for 2 teams - 1 to do what you do and another to practice against that does what everyone else does.

To be so close to being the team that could usher in the next cycle and then have it all come crashing down in flames must be devestating, but it seems deservedly so.

HS
causeicouldntgo43's picture

There was some of what you were talking about in Monday night’s SEC/espn invitational where you had an Alabama team that has begrudgingly adopted the RPO spread game with Tua, and a Clemson squad that went full blitzkreig mode with it.

While Bama was still trying to establish a running game and use pop passes up the middle, Clemson relentlessly attacked the perimeter. Until the final Clemsom drive where they were just chewing clock, Clemson threw 31 times and rushed only 18 times.

This strategy may be what Day has in store for the Buckeyes if he has a QB that can execute it, a solid O line and of course a defense that can force enough three and outs.

HS
Extramedium's picture

This is why I wish we had a chance to play Bama Instead of Oklahoma.  Seeing as how relatively close they kept it, I'm fairly sure we'd have beaten them in the semis.  Again.

While excited about Fields I want to see how he is between the ears when he is on the field and how much time and how quickly he is able to learn coverages and how he adjusts. Raw talent is great but you have to he able to execute and that takes the gray matter functioning at a high level.

I don't buy one goddam drop of gas in the state of Michigan!

HS

Can you stop saying that about Fields? The fact that true freshman are regularly starting QBs in the NC game shows raw talent is more important.  Fields runs like Terrelle Pryor and throws like Dwayne Haskins, he is already enrolled and has the best QB minded HC in the business.

I was not one to jump on the Simba express and wanted to "wait and see". I am different with Fields. I believe that he will enroll early and be our starting QB this coming season. I then believe that he will challenge the record books.

One of USC’s problems has been that it keeps trotting out former football stars as ADs (Mike Garrett, Pat Haden, and now Swann) as opposed to accomplished college sports administrators. The Trojans have actually fallen farther and faster than Michigan. Michigan’s demise has been a slow burn but USC competed and won national championships in this millennia. Now they’re almost an afterthought. Michigan at least has Ohio State to play the villain but who does USC have to blame? What west coast rival is standing over its rotting corpse and gloating? It sure isn’t UCLA. And who can hate on Washington or Washington State or Stanford? Oregon’s about as good as it gets and it’s not as if the Ducks have been setting the world on fire lately.

Interestingly, the Lusitania, mentioned in the article, was also lost at sea; except she was torpedo by an U-Boat. That helped push the US into the war since American lives were lost and the British claimed she was only a passenger ship, and not carrying ammunition as the Germans claimed. Years later, the UK admitted she was carrying  lot of ammunition and thus a risk to anyone trying to salvage her.

HS
iowabuckeyes's picture

RMS Lusitania was sunk in May 2015. 128 Americans lost their lives. The US didn’t enter the war until nearly two years later on April 2, 2017.

In keeping with the spirit of the true conspiracies link, Germany alleged that the ship was carrying hundreds of tons of munitions, which many historians believe caused a second explosion after the torpedo struck—the sub only fired one torpedo—that ultimately doomed to ship to sinking much faster than it might have and resulted in a greater loss of life than it should have.

iIRC my history, “Remember the Lusitania” was a rallying cry for those pushing the US into WWI. Not a Pearl Harbor-like event with an immediate reaction, but still very relevant.

HS
osu78's picture

True, however the sinking of the Lusitania helped create more anti-German sentiment and was used to move the US to entering the war.

As for munitions, it's not a conspiracy theory anymore since the UK eventually admitted it was carrying a large amount of munitions.  She apparently had been used to transport munitions previously as well; and carrying munitions in a British flagged vessel sailing in a war zone and not flying a flag would make her a legitimate target. The Lusitania was not an innocent passenger vessel, but it was convenient to sell that story to get the US to move off its position of neutrality.

The British also created Q-ships, armed merchant vessels designed to attack and sink U-boats that surfaced and gave crews time to abandon ship; the Lusitania was fitted for guns but unarmed at the time of her sinking. They also expected vessels to attempt to ram and sink U-boats instead of abandoning ship. The British expected the Germans to follow the Cruiser Rules but ordered their vessels not to do the same. This lead to unrestricted submarine warfare by the Germans, which also helped turn US opinion against them.

Strive at all times to bend, fold, spindle and mutilate.

HS
osu78's picture

I meant to add the British blockade of Germany lead to Germany declaring a war zone around the UK and Ireland where enemy vessels would be sunk without warning, despite the cruiser rules.

I was wondering all of this, too. My guess on who’s footing the bill: The Ohio State University.

HS
BBQ_Fan's picture

Could the University pay the legal fees of a student athlete?  Seems like that might be a benefit not be allowable by (wait for it) the NCAA.  I'm wondering if there is a payment plan that recoups cost based on future income, whether in the NFL or not based on some sort sliding scale.  e.g. Get a pro deal and you pay it all back plus a kicker. Just become an otherwise productive member of society and pay a significantly discounted rate.

HS
iowabuckeyes's picture

I think it depends on what’s in the best interests of the school and the athlete. I know that schools are allowed to pay for a draft eligible players’s insurance if he decides to come back so that if he’s injured, he’s covered for lost wages. While Fields family may be “comfortable,” is that true for every player who wanted out of Ole Miss or did Shea Patterson’s or Van Jefferson’s families cover the tab for everyone or were they included pro bono?

As I think about it, what’s to keep the attorney from betting on the player going to the NFL and signing a contract for future payment once he’s making pro money? I bet that’s allowable as long as he’s not acting as an agent.

Its insane that it was only 8 days ago we were celebrating a Rose Bowl win and celebrating with Urban. Ryan Day is absolutely killing it. Between coaching hires and guys returning, he has kept enough continuity from the machine that Urban built, while also attempting to fix some weaknesses and put his own spin on the program, and its only been a week!

Looking forward to seeing what the DB's do....I agree with most, keeping Sheffield would be huge, Arnette would be a bonus. Finalize the staff. And then see if there is a big late recruiting W before signing day (on top of keeping Nester), and get Fields cleared. I'm still excited as if its the middle of football season.

Trevor Lawrence was not start gonna over Jake Fromm, no one was. Kirby Smart was in love with Fromm and believed he was the type of game manager they needed to go back to the national championship. From what I have seen of both on the field, Martell is somewhere between Barrett and Braxton as a runner, while Fields’ running is more reminiscent of Pryor, so somewhere between Pryor and Barrett.  Run edge - Martell.

In terms of passing, Martell reminds me of Barrett.  Fields lands somewhere between Barrett and Haskins.  Pass edge - Fields.

Again, that’s just my opinion based on their minutes/highlights in games.  Also, Fields seems to have had more meaningful minutes than Martell.  But, Martell has been in our system, has had Day as coach for two years.  It’ll be quite a battle.

I see Fields as a bigger Troy Smith with a higher ceiling both passing and running. As long as he puts in the work, which I believe he will, I don't think the competition for QB1 will actually be all that close. And I'm not sure Fields' closest competition won't be from Baldwin.

HS

Fields is bigger and faster than Martell, not sure how you can give Martell the edge. He may run the read option better, but from a pure running standpoing Fields is a notch above Tate.

Michigan may never have been at a lower point than it is right now. I can’t imagine anyone up there happy. Is it too early to declare them a basketball school? They’ve got that stupid Jumpman on their football jerseys so why not?

Fields will 100% get his waiver and will win the starting QB job and torch the competition all the way to a natty next season, and the season after that (unless he’s draft eligible). Ain’t no way the cucks at the NCAA are gonna deny a waiver based upon verified use of the “N” word being yelled at him by a member (former) of the UGA baseball team.

I feel bad for Tate, and perhaps he’ll still win the job, but Fields is basically a bigger, faster, stronger, more talented version of himself.

I really do think that if we go up north and beat them yet again, which seems likely, it will literally break their program. Harbaugh will scurry back to the NFL and they will have to figure out where they go from there. And I am so looking forward to it!

Re: Kingsbury.  That is quite an amazing rise from getting fired at a middling B12 team to NFL HC in the span of less than 2 months, with a 30 minute day layover in LA. I'm intrigued by him as well.  He really seemed to have picked up where Leach left off (Tommy Tuberville's short term in between kind of forgotten) but he just could never find the right DC to keep them afloat. I suspect that the Cardinals figure it will be easy to attract a high level DC in the NFL and they want him for his offensive brain. Personally I am glad he didn't lsat at USC, he could have brought them back quickly on the offensive side, so I'm glad he jumped ship to the NFL. It will be interesting to see if it works out.

I will say this - I know a coach for OSU  and he told me BEFORE the UM game that "stuff was going on in UM."   He would NOT elaborate, but he implied that the locker room was anything but aligned, even though they were WINNING!   Pure speculation here (because I asked questions!), but it "felt" like there are/were MANY perceived "favorites" and a flashpoint occurred when a previous starter was injured and then not moved back to starter when healed.   Again, I have no specifics, but he was adamant that there were issues.   I have not been able to speak with him since the bowl game, but I believe OSU knew about this for awhile...

One thing that the skinny guys article doesn't mention (but should) is how age plays into it - based on the couple named ages and the descriptions ("couple years out of college"), it seems like everybody referenced in the article is in their 20's or just outside it. Would love to see them track down formerly 'skinny guys' who are now in their mid-30's or 40's.

Because I was the exact same way in college and my 20's - my diet couldn't make me fat no matter how much I tried, my weight training was just to gain weight, and if I took a break from the gym, I'd melt right back down in weight. But once I hit the early 30's, a lot of that vanished. Not entirely - I'm still fairly thin relative to others...but an extra 10-15 pounds of weight and that middle-aged-man belly roll both can appear fairly easily when I don't take care of diet and exercise properly.

HS
tajikey's picture

Fellow 30-something skinny guy, here, and I can say that if my wife hadn't thrown them out, I'd still fit into the clothes I wore my senior year of high school. I did the high-calorie meal plan + personal trainer thing, too, and like you, my muscles will cut, but I didn't actually gain any sustainable weight that didn't go away after a week or two off.

HS
Extramedium's picture

Most of that "middle aged weight gain" comes because, whether you realize it or not, you're not as active as you were before.  It's always calories in vs calories out.. if your calories out slowly goes down as you sit at a desk more etc, but calories in stays the same, you're going to slowly gain weight and hit a new equilibrium that comes with a belly.

As far as gaining significant muscle and keeping it on, you not only need to be in a caloric surplus, you have to really work your ass off with weights.  That's why it always cracks me up when women don't want to do any lifting because they're afraid they'll get bulky.. like guys aren't specifically trying and failing to bulk up just a little bit.
