I think the big difference is he won't take chances on players. He will continue to recruit good people.

HS

Yup, social media has pretty much put an end to recruiting "known" HS thugs/major character risks.............Urban would not have been able to recruit most of the Lakeland 8 or however many there were to tOSU in 2017,imo...............................

They are really going to miss Prince just standing up and getting a false start on 3rd and 4 at least once per game.

HS

If they don't have a valid replacement, they ARE going to miss Prince for the other 58 plays when he doesn't false start.  And I was no Prince fan.  (I'm not a Prince Fan either.)  And for the record, Prince was a minor leaguer compared to the alltime false start king J.D. Shugarts.

That ‘baggage’ was greatly exaggerated by a hating media.  There is an overwhelming amount of good that was ignored.  I’m grateful we had him.

Wish I had more than one upvote I could give you.

HS
Belliott's picture

Really?

You can be appreciative of a coach and admit that he had some sincere and self-caused baggage. Yes he also did a lot of good (real life Wednesday’s are happening at many schools because of him, families got 2 stipends for playoffs, amazing coach, etc) but the man’s baggage is real.

We as fans need to be more nuanced in our fandom.

HS
buckeyenut74's picture

Zach smith is what it is. With that said, how many players got into trouble at Ohio State over his tenure here....I can think of two, and they were punished. Meanwhile, some other programs allowed players to continue playing after they had charges, where was the media focus on them?

Please explain what baggage he had at Ohio State....only one is Zach Smith, and there were a lot of inconsistencies with that story, and as far as I’m concerned, Meyer did what he was supposed to do and made the right people aware of Courtney's allegations. There were things that were withheld from Meyer as well...Zach Smith’s OVI was one of them. There were two players I recall having issues with law enforcement  Barrett, OVI, he was punished. Hyde was punished and if memory serves me correctly, he was cleared and never charged for a crime by the Columbus Police. I don’t recall any other issues over Meyer’s 7 years, and certainly no major issues.

Is Meyer perfect? No, but neither is anyone else. I say Meyer had a very good track record with his time here.

HS
Belliott's picture

Here’s the thing. We’re not Talking about anybody else. We’re talking about urban. We’re also not only talking about Ohio state when talking about him. We’re also talking Florida. He has baggage. That’s what baggage is; it follows you. It’s ok to admit he has it.

And he does have a good track record here. He seemed to have mostly learned. But Zach isn’t just something you pass by as if it’s some nothing situation. Everything outside of the DV stuff (which I won’t debate here) were fireable offenses. It’s very much “Other than that Mrs. Lincoln how was the show”

HS
buckeyenut74's picture

Guess we will agree to disagree. Like I said, no one is perfect. And a lot of the Zach Snith stuff wasn’t known by Meyer. What happened in Florida? Obviously so, but when charges are dropped or never filed means something. You are on a slippery slope when you start taking actions, even after law enforcement and prosecutors say there isn’t evidence for charges. There were many other things that happened at Ohio State in regards to Smith that Meyer didn’t know about, that was documented from their investigation.

HS
Belliott's picture

I’m cool with agreeing to disagree.

I specifically didn’t talk about the stuff involving law enforcement though. And everything else he admitted he knew. The strip club on recruiting trips, alcoholism, being a shitty coach.

And what happened at Florida? How much time do you have? I’ll assume you just don’t know because I thought we agreed all of his bad decisions there are why he made better ones here

The DVs don’t bother me. I know there are 1000 urban stans on here who act like the man is their family or something.

Anyway, enjoy your day man. I get your points, I just think he has baggage, which was the original point of this comment thread.

HS

Baggage I was referring to is not of ZS but the skeletons in the closet at Florida.  The Urbz of today is a better human being than he what he did to win in Gainesville. And, I'm glad he's learned from his mistakes.

I like what Day is doing with the coaching staff. Urban's biggest failing the past few years was settling for some mediocre coaching hires on the defensive side of the ball. It remains to be seen if Day can organize and oversee a program like Urban did and win games in the manner he did, but I like how aggressively he's gone after the coaches he wants to fix the defense. It's a good start to the Day era.

HS
bucknut1994's picture

For the next few years I think Day will should focus on working with offense and letting associate HC Larry Johnson run the defense. But yeah I'm loving the new hires he is bringing in.

That is one thing that Meyer lacked these last few years. The need to twist the dagger at the end of games. A lot of people would call it bad gamesmanship, but I would prefer a coach that makes a statement the whole game never giving the other team a chance to recover.

Bah!  While as a fan and a hater, getting another TD + 2 to hit 70 would've been cool, taking a knee at the 10 yard line isn't a bad troll of another team.

Let's not forget that breaking the 50 point ceiling in 1968 did come back to haunt tOSU in 1969.  I don't have a problem with ANYTHING Urban did with regards to the weasels.  He was perfect.

If so, I hope he doesn't burn out physically, as did Meyer. We all make fun of "satan-Nick Saban" but he his the energy Urban had, and focuses it like a laser. Urban is a very emotional man (I related to him for it...other than we were in the same class at UC) but at a price. I admired his fatherly affection for his players, he kept Zeke together (who I think is as nuts as Mo Clarett but from a better family/childhood). This nature of his may have resulted in the Bi-polar nature of his later teams. One week the most thrilling comeback against PSU, then 7 days later getting clobbered by a mediocre Iowa team. The program was SO emotionally all-over-the-place this year and STILL only lost one game...that in itself is amazing. Yet the program couldn't stay focused enough to lobby for "Dwayne's" (imho) Heisman. Let's hope he's as driven, but maybe a bit less "caloric"

Al Washington grew up in Columbus as a Buckeyes fan and his dad played for the Buckeyes.  Given that, I really don't think there was much Michigan could have offered, short of the DC position, to keep him on staff.  I don't necessarily think this is a reflection of how bad things are at Michigan.

I agree. Coach Day is familiar with Mattison and Washington ( now looking for Jefferson and Monroe), consequently making the offer and hiring much easier.  Similar with the new DB hire.  If they were not from the rival it would be more of the assistant coach carousel.

Washington also was only at scUM for one year (he was on Fickell's staff at UC in 2017). So his loyalty to the program doesn't run that deep. Flipping Mattison to come here was much more of a shock. There weren't even rumblings that he was even considering OSU, just rumblings about scUM forcing him into retirement. My guess is Day pounced on that opportunity last minute.

I just hope Day is the same “I don’t give a damn about ur feelings” type of guy that he is off the field hiring coaches as he is on the field during games. I’ll be impressed when we are up two scores in a big game late, and he isn’t just running the same shit that Meyer did to end up making the game close. Being passive and giving up all the momentum. Keeping games unnecessarily close. Classic Meyer and Tressel. Hope he just keeps the heat on.

HS
Kevin Harrish's picture

My friend was concerned that Day would be too nice and kind to be successful at Ohio State. I think getting rid basically the entire defensive staff and brining in a five-star transfer to compete with a dude who's been there for two and a half years tells me that's not really going to be an issue.

What your friend was concerned about describes Jim Tressel to a T. Didn't stop him from having success at OSU. I don't think it's necessarily a requirement to be a complete douchecanoe for this job in the mold of Saban. You have to be ruthless sometimes, sure, but that doesn't mean winning with class should be thrown out the window. That being said sticking it to our rivals is always a +1 in my book. Day I think already gets the rivalry better than Cooper ever did.

11 Strong.

HS
stxbuck's picture

Tressel is a complete generation removed from Ryan Day. In the 90s, and earlier, successful coaches kept mostly intact staffs around for much longer periods of time. Did assistants get fired-absolutely, but the successful programs generally had much greater continuity. Day is operating in the coaching landscape of today, JT was operating in his time frame.

HS
Dstacify's picture

Tressel was at his height in the early 2000s but I do see what you're getting at. Tressel was also more prone to nepotism than Meyer was with his hires (his brother was RBs Coach during the entirety of his run and he brought Bollman and Dantonio on-board in part because he was close friends with both of them).

11 Strong.

HS
stxbuck's picture

Dick Tressel was a damn good RB coach-just sayin.........................as far as RB coaches are "good'-ie, hired to produce good RB play and not other duties/considerations. Most HCs are in fact good friends w/ some of their assistants-Dantonio-it's a natural occurrence. I'm sure Coach Day considers Jeff Hafley a good friend. Al Washington also coached w/ Day at Boston College.

HS
Dstacify's picture

Didn't say Dick Tressel was a bad RBs Coach (he was excellent in that role). Tressel's worst example of nepotism was Bollman. Bollman never should've kept the OC job for as long as he did. I think Tressel calling the plays from the sideline kept him safe through the majority of his run (many of Bollman's offensive lines were also really bad).

11 Strong.

BuckeyeIn NY's picture

Day is the real deal.  I have been saying this for a couple of years, but Urban didn't lose his fire and competitiveness as a coach.  What he did lose was his ability to make decisions with his head over his heart.  Whether it was a player or coach, he lost his ability to do what was best for the program as a hole, despite personal relationships.  In the end, the personal relationships won out over what was best for the whole team.  I think this ate at Meyer, and was the main point of stress that derailed his health.

Day on the other hand, is proving that he is going to do whatever it takes to win.  I expect some starters from this year losing their jobs.  I expect coaches will perform or be fired.  I expect no more letdowns against far inferior opponents.

HS
ISURVIVEDCOOPER's picture

It's a great business school case study if you ask me.

Urbz is on record around this time a few years ago saying that he was at the point in his career where he had the privilege of choice to be around people he wants to be around [sic]. To me, that was a white flag moment that said that he just wanted to end his career around friends he admired with some quality wins and football along the way. That clearly played out with his hiring of Schiano and his best man, Billy Davis.

Day (as metioned above), a younger version of Meyer, and has a whole lot to prove as the head football coach, and I'm sure he is motivated to make his own impact on our fine program in his own unique way. Now, clearly, he has learned about the value of talent in both coaches and players, as we have seen him already eviscerate UM, but it won't mean scrap if he isn't central to helping the chemistry grow to be epic proportions that brings dynasties to bear. I have full confidence he can do this, and am super excited to see it come to fruition.

Here's to seeing the completion of the DEATH STAR, and it's coming for everyone on our schedules for years to come!

I am one of Urban's biggest fans,  and I wish he had the ability to coach 10 more seasons!  Since he can't,  I love the fact that he's on staff at Ohio State.  I think that is a huge bonus that not many ppl outside of Buckeye Nation are talking about.

Ryan Day does look the part of a ho hum nice guy.  and Great!  Because what it looks like from his coaching changes and the first 3 games of the season is that he looks the part of a nice guy but plays the part of the heartless Villain.  Which IMO is what Urban had when he was in is younger days.   And maybe rightfully so, he grew a heart and starting caring more about ppl than he did wins (ala Tress).  Needless to say he still won a crap-ton of games!  I think we're all going to be well pleased this time next season and for the foreseeable future...

Damn it feels Great to be a Buckeye!!!!
