What to Know: New Ohio State Linebackers Coach Al Washington Brings Columbus Roots, Recruiting Prowess from Ann Arbor

There is just something special about central Ohio. Our culture surrounding football is unparalleled.  So happy to have Washington home.

HS
SilverHaven's picture

I am happy Al came home, and also very relieved.
Al was the point man in recruiting Ohio boys to Michi.
Al was key in recruiting Zach Harrison to join him up north.
And with the coaching changes it looked probable that Al would not come home.

Most of them seem to be in denial and positioning this as a plus as it removes two guys from the defense that gave up 100+ points in the last two games and will allow Hairball to "upgrade" his coaches.  Just have to shake your head at the way they think and there complete lack of understanding as to why they got waxed in those two games.

This is why we have to beat Ohio State next year.

It will be this shitstorm x 100 if we lose to OSU with a new coach, new QB, new coordinators, in the Big House.

It will make everybody's life miserable and put Harbaugh under a cloud that will kill recruiting.

It will be the start of a spiral we do not want."

The START of a spiral?!? Dude has no idea what's going on with his beloved program.

HS
CowCat's picture

The START of a spiral?!?

It has been a spiral since 2001. They've had one quality win in 18 years (2003). 2011 was bogus because OSU had an interim coach. Still they only won by 6 points and nearly lost the game.

Now the spiral is spinning much faster. Not only did they give up the most points to OSU in history, they lost the two best assistants on their defense to OSU. Magnificent.

There is just so much to love from mgoblog today.

"They've been bullying us and eating our lunch for so many years and we've had no comeback. All we had left to do was just to limp back home and hate them.

Now they showed up on our doorstep in shades and a leather jacket to pick our sister up for a date and all we're going to do about it is go in the backyard and kick rocks."

The Mattison and Yurcich hires, if I'm being honest, left me wanting more, but the Hafley and Washington hires have me excited. The first two, I'm a bit conflicted about their additions, although I'm confident Day knows what he's doing, but Hafley, and especially Washington, are home runs, imo. Can't wait for spring football.

I wonder if Harrison pulled towards OSU because he knew Washington was coming here?

I'm new to college football fandom, so I'm not sure how realistic that is, but even my little conspiracy aside, he did great things to be able to make it that close of a recruitment in the first place. Makes him a great hire as recruiting is just so critical towards this program's and Day's success.

HS
gm3jones's picture

He also recruited Harrison while at TTUN. Now he gets to play for both coaches he liked! Wonder if Day filled him on this?

There is nothing more remarkable as learning to think better.

HS
MiamiBuckeye's picture

Interesting that he's coached runningbacks and special teams as well as D-line and linebackers. Could he take over for Meyer on special teams?

I think our special teams suffered at times having Meyer coaching them--not because Meyer isn't a great coach but because it's impossible for a head coach to have the time and energy left over to coach and control an entire phase of the game to perfection while also overseeing everything else.

Anyone else thinking part of the sale job to Washington was that Mattison turns 70 during the next season and after a couple years of seasoning Al's next in line for a co-DC gig when Greg retires?

HS
avail31678's picture

Certainly possible, but that's kinda the case at any school you coach for - if you do a good job as an assistant, you may get a coordinator position.

I don't think they had to do much luring for Washington.  He's an Ohio guy, and Michigan basically counter offered him a promotion/raise and he STILL came here.

Perhaps the biggest area in which Washington could make an impact, though, will be recruiting. The 34-year-old is highly regarded for his ability to connect with young football players, and could potentially take a leading role among the coaching staff in that area, too.

This gives me hope that we are gonna get a lot better very - very soon.

I think ONE fair point made on MGo is why is Washington considered that great of a recruiter?  Seems it's MOSTLY by reputation and recommendation at this point.  Seems like he's had some decent gets along the way...

I like many was a bit unsure with a hire yesterday but getting Washington blends the wise, experienced, older guys with energetic, hungry, young bloods. This staff has filled out nicely. I’m now very excited. And adding Raymond would complete the mix.

Good point Brutus. Today Finebaum, in the Alabama autopsy, said he thought a huge part of the reason Alabama lost was Saban's decision to go with mostly young, hot shot recruiters after last year as relatively inexperienced coaches and co-ordinators because he was pissed about Georgia's success last year in recruiting. Day has blended a mix of youth and experience building his staff. I hope it works.

Do ya think?! In other news, water is wet.

HS
EZE4TD's picture

Don't get too discouraged, though. Just below that one was a guy who knows a guy who is an insider at Olentangy. He said that Jimmy and Don Brown cooled on Harrison, so Washington went behind their backs and offered to get one of his buddies onto the UM team if he brought Harrison. So Jimmy wanted Washington out, and he "ended up with the cheaters where he belongs."

So while a few have seen the light, most are as delusional as ever. Cooled on Harrison hahahahahahaha.

HS
HoyaBuckeye's picture

That is hilarious. Wasn't JH spotted in Ohio clearly trying to recruit Harrison before the deadline?

HS
avail31678's picture

Yes.  He was spotted at the Kroger just down the road from Orange HS.  It's a glorious story, actually, because it was Joshua Perry's mom who spotted him.  Then she flashed some gold pants at him, and he got irritated and left.

Some of that story quoted above might be true, but there is zero reason to think Harbaugh "cooled" on Harrison.  That's delusion right there.

I'm excited to have him join the fold.  I bet the linebackers are too!

HS
BlueBayou's picture

Just a quick correction.  Al Washington had the “linebackers” coach position at Michigan, but he did not coach all of the linebackers.  Linebacker coaching was divided between him and Don Brown.  Don Brown coached the middle linebackers and SAMs.  It is my understanding that Al was more in charge of the rush linebackers, which I believe included the Vipers.  One article also said he was involved in coaching for the nickel backs.  So that means Al didn’t coach Devin Bush, Bush was coached directly by Don Brown.  Al would have instead been coaching Kaleke Hudson, Josh Uche, Noah Furbush, Jordan Glasgow, and potentially Brandon Watson and Ambry Thomas if he did coach the nickel backs.  Hudson seemed to have a quiet year compared to his prior year, but Uche saw great improvement and Watson saw a leap until Ohio State exposed his lack of speed, which was common knowledge by the fan base, but nobody was able to take advantage of it all year until the Game.

In summary, maybe some regression by Al’s star pupil Hudson, but positive signs with Uche and Watson’s progress.  Uche specifically excelled as a pass rusher, which makes sense since Washington is most experienced with DL.  His recruiting chops are top notch, so slam dunk hire there.

As an additional aside I hadn’t thought of until now, Ohio State’s defensive coaching staff is now loaded really heavy on defensive line coaches.  Larry Johnson, Greg Mattison, and Al Washington have all mostly specialized in DL coaching while dabbling with the other positions.  Mattison with the lone coordinator experience, but from a positional perspective, he Is most recognized for his DL work.  The silver bullets might still have some growing pains with the LBs, but I would have to think this staff is primed to get just about any DL recruit they want.

HS
Buckeyebobby1968's picture

I love the comments from some Michigan fans on Freep and MLive basically saying that Washington's linebackers did nothing during their losses to Ohio State and Florida. If your losing coaches to your hated rivals then something isn't right.

What I'm curious about is how this will play out in recruiting.

We have 2 former coaches from TTUN that now need to say that TOSU is the only place to be. That's going to be interesting. They're going to go back to the same HS coaching contacts and sing a different tune.

I suppose I would pitch it as "OSU is rebuilding itself. Jump on the bandwagon".

I am through the roof at this point for a multitude of reasons. Most importantly, Ryan Day has done damage to the TTUN. Day has taken some of the most drastic moves I have seen, since Urban entered and galvanized the Big Ten. I am in all.
