Day moves fast if nothing else, damn
More likely he had all those moves lined up already, they're just leaking out to the press now.
Some coaches Day worked with before, eh?
Hopefully, they are high-quality, effective coaches and recruiters . . . and high character guys. Coaches that Gene Smith has carefully vetted, and signed off on.
Our honor defend, so we'll fight to the end !
Yeah I’m also a little scared of the friends and family plan continuing!
I agree, but that's how pretty much all coaching hires are done it seems. As long as they are hired because they actually know the position, and didn't have a spot found for them on the staff a la Billy D

He’s the reason I am in the NFL today. He taught me how to study the opponent and what to look for. Took me from a inconsistent starter to an All American. One of my favorite coaches at any level and a lifelong friend. Great Hire https://t.co/ixI8ppMKJ1— Logan Ryan (@RealLoganRyan) January 7, 2019
from Alex Gleitman at 247sports a couple days ago.“Hearing Ohio State is nowhere near with revamping their defensive staff. Some very interesting names being thrown around that would definitely shake up the BIG a little.” Then said should be complete by end of this week with NFL names now in the mix. But didn’t name any.
Hammer on head for Alex
The OSU Defense was not good in 2018, and I'm for shaking up the coaching staff.
I'm happy that OSU's hiring criteria don't include coaches that fans (at one particular school) have heard of, and are "big names."
One's experience and reputation in coaching circles seem more valid criteria.
Hafley coaching the secondary why isn't Taver gone! Gosh dang tired of that secondary getting PI calls all year long under Taver. Get Raymond for lazy Grinch!
ITS ALL HAPPENING SO FAST

What’s bad about this hire? Tell me how he’s ever proven to be a bad coach or not develop players. If you can’t, then your post was so ridiculous as it already is.

Look, I understand the humor, coincidence and irony of Mejer and Day each hiring their best men as defensive coaches, but one example does not a pattern make.
Whether a person is your best man doesn't correlate in any way with whether he is a good or bad defensive coaches. I'm sure that of very many defensive coaches in America were best men for someone. Is anyone saying ALL of them are horrid?
Just because Davis sucked dead donkeys does not mean Hafley will. Just sayin'

Seems to be an excellent defensive back coach. Coached at Pitt (Darrelle Revis) and Rutgers. Coached the Browns D-backs when three went to the Pro Bowl in the same year. Richard Sherman raved about him as 49ers coach.
Reputed to be a good recruiter but has been in the pros for 7 years. I heard he doesn't even have a twitter account. That will need to change, and fast!
Well, we have a co-DC who is 69, and a co-DC who is 39. The average is 54--that's okay--right????
You Got Barbecue Back There!?!?!?!
"I heard he doesn't even have a twitter account. That will need to change, and fast!"
I don't get it. Why does he need a twitter account?

i was thinking the same thing. the only thing that gives me pause is that he's "friends" with Coach Day, and worked often with Schiano. He did seem to rise pretty fast; a few years in D1 before spending 4 in the pros

Day isn't messing around. I don't know anything about this guy, so I hope he turns out to be a good defensive coach and recruiter for the Buckeyes. Although, after this past year, I'm not sure the Buckeyes could do much worse on defense.

The 49ers offense and QB play wasn't too hot before we hired Ryan Day from them, so give it a minute before making generalizations
He did great as the browns DB coach when he was in Cleveland. Some guys had their best years. Logan Ryan also tweeted out high praise.
interesting - replace schiano with someone who coached under schiano at tampa? still in the wait and see what happens, but interesting.
I don't think Schiano was fired, I think he left. So it makes sense from that perspective
Good to see 11W is still up and running.
Maybe Vic Fangio is next to join the staff, let’s keep this train rolling.
Just from quick Google searches, appears that he's a strong East Coast guy. This is some material from a Pitt board where he was a coach.
"I remember Hafley being a great recruiter and Wanny trusting him 100%. Didn't he (Wanny) agree to take Dion Lewis without even looking at him because Hefley liked him so much. What I also remember was everybody on this board thinking he was the absolute worst secondary coach of all time."
"Out of work in San Fran. He would be an upgrade to Hill and improve recruiting in NJ. Not sure he would come back to college, but also not sure what other options he'll receive."
Also referred to in a 247 article as an "ace New Jersey recruiter"
Also listed in a CBS Sports article that teams could be looking at him as a defensive coordinator (in the NFL).
In another point, if 11W has absolutely nothing to add on a story do we really have to close the forum topic for it?
Makes sense to cope with the loss of an elite East Coast recruiter that is Schiano
"To Buckeye Nation: You have my word that I'm going to give everything I have to continue the tradition of excellence and winning that this program has enjoyed during its storied history."
Great hiring, this man knows how to teach DBs to get turnovers, his Tampa Buccaneers were 3rd in the league in interceptions & turnovers, and ive see the DBs he’s coached , pretty good imo
I hope the scheme of ˋlet them catch the ball and then try to knock it out‘ changes. I hope we go back to looking for the ball.
Coached under Schiano at TB and Kelly at 49ers so he's clearly a recommendation. Hope those guys are right about him.
Day was on the same SF staff with him in 2016.
I tought we didn't like hiring your buddy?
You win with people.
I don't think he's ever overlapped with Day. He was in San Fran in 2016 but Day was at OSU by then.
Day coached with him in 2016 at SF.
from my googling, it looks like they were together in 2016 under chip kelly. day came over to the buckeyes on january 3, 2017.
I tought we didn't like hiring your buddy?
No problem with me if they perform. Problem with me if they don't.
Best man at wedding and grandchild of boss are not the same as pro football position coach and co- worker.
If your buddy is a good coach with experience and track record, why not? If you move your buddy around to fill random positions on your staff as needed, that's a problem.
Dude hasn't been anywhere longer than a 1-2 and he's been quite a few places. Please let this not be another Davis hire ...
If you die before you die, then you won't die when you die.
He's pretty young. If you look at any big time head coach (Urbz, Saban, etc.), they usually have a lot of different jobs in the first ~10-20 years of their careers before they start settling in spots.
Day hasn't really made any mistakes yet (that we know of), so I'm gonna hold off on assuming it is Bill Davis 2.0 before things play out.
This is going to be a long, but exciting offseason.
You can say that again
Strive at all times to bend, fold, spindle and mutilate.
Since he's coached secondary everywhere he's been, including in the NFL, I think it's safe to say he's not another Bill Davis.
Sounds like Grinch's replacement...his entire career is coaching secondaries. Let's hope he's not the next Davis on the recruiting trail. Co-DC might just be to get his pay in line with NFL pay.
I hope Mattison isn't the other Co-DC. Maybe special teams coach, giving him time to be a sounding board for the D coaches?
Still holding out hope for Freeman as DC.
Just for the record, how many of you heard of Ryan Day before we hired him?
The same number who had ever heard of Chris Ash before we hired him. Zero.

I hope he does better than the last 49'er coach that came to the BIG
I was actually referring to JH. The jury is still out on Ryan Day
If your jury is still out on Ryan Day, then I think you need to declare a mistrial due to an incompetent jury.
We have no idea how well Day is going to do as head coach. Hopefully you're not using the first three games of this past season as a barometer of his success. The band director could have coached this team in the first three games of this past season and came away with W's. It was less than 12 months ago when people were having orgasms over the hiring of Alex Grinch and now people are rejoicing that he's gone. Good Grief
I didn't understand why people were so excited about that hire, and really couldn't understand why they wanted him to take over the defense after last season. I feel the same way about this guy, let's see how he does.. but I trust his pedigree more than a guy whose biggest accomplishment was working as part of a PAC12 defensive staff that slightly improved from one season to the next.
Why because he won 3 games with a team Urban built? I think most people our optamistic about Ryan Day but acting like he is a cant miss head coach just isn't true.
Yeah, god forbid the guy who just developed the best statistical qb in the history of the big 10, had the number 2 offense in the entire country, and just brought in the highest rated qb in the history of ohio state needs to do more to prove his worth.
Day is an absolute can't miss HC prospect...there's a reason why college and pro teams wanted him. Shit, if we had Day has HC the prior year maybe we would have had Haskins for 2 years as our starter as we should have (bring it on JTB supporters).
That's all nice...but he was hired to win championships. The steps along the way are just that...steps along the way. As was said earlier, he still has a lot to prove before he can be called a homerun hire. Nobody's saying he won't be awesome...just that he has never been the head guy anywhere and it's still a long way from here to where we want to be.
TXNut: I think Day is going to be fantastic, but...for the record, every one of your arguments focuses only on one side of the ball (offense) and actually mostly on just one position (QB). He's fantastic at it, but developing a QB is far from the only job of a head coach. How is Day on player discipline? How about game-day clock management? Can Day set a large-scale recruiting strategy? How is Day at roster numbers management? When a coach underperforms, will Day realize it quickly enough to jump in? Glad-handing boosters? Dealing with the media? Can he keep his assistants/players from going off the rails with NCAA violations?
I personally think he's going to be wildly successful, but you don't have to look hard for guys who were stellar coordinators but just didn't quite have what it takes in the main chair. Or even proven head coaches who couldn't quite get it done; remember when Harbaugh was hired and we were all worried about TTUN finally nailing a coaching hire?
I have the same questions you have, Lighteyes.
However, so far, so good. Day has a support system in place with LJSR, Hartline, Marotti, Pantoni still on staff. Gene Smith is still the AD and will help him keep the program stable. He's made 3 great hires in recent days, especially on defense.
What he'll have to adjust to is being both the boss and the face of the program. He already has direct experience in what it means to be the HC at a top-tier school like OSU. He handled that well. Now he has to get used to kissing babies and such.
"We get paid to score touchdowns, not kick field goals"

If Day retains Studrawa you must convict.
FWIW Wikipedia has him listed already as Defensive Backs coach at Ohio State. Maybe that plus the Co tag??
We didn't lose the game.. we just ran out of time. Vince Lombardi
If its on Wiki, it must be true.
I'm guessing he'll closely oversee DBs, and my guess is that Day has empowered Hafley to show Tavers (or Davis) the door if he sees fit. (And if he doesn't see fit to do so, I immediately question his judgment).
Isn't he the Diary of a Wimpy Kid?
39 years old...wealth of experience....question is now is he a corners or safeties coach...and is Taver gone?
Please be safeties coach and bring in Corey Raymond lol
Thats a fantasy at this point imo.... He wont make that move without being upgraded but both Co-DC titles are taken
Light shines in the darkness and the darkness has not overcome it-John 1:5 SEC meet Ohio State, Ohio State meet SEC
Who says that we can't have three Co-DC titles...

2 hires 0 RECRUTABILITY
1 will hinder because of his age. And his last ran DC job was horrible. That plus Michigan as his only resume the past decade.... Not really a selling point. And now an NFL guy who recruited one year i think back in 2011 lol... God i hope this works
I assume that 7 years of NFL coaching will help him with recruiting. It's not like he has been flipping burgers since last recruiting in 2011.
How was Bill Davis?
I like our LB haul we had this year AND last so I am not sure of your point?
I would rather be on hand with 10 men then elsewhere with 10,000 - Timur Lenk
Recruiting LBs wasn’t the problem. Coaching them was.
Mattison is a great recruiter, and was a very solid DC under Hoke. I don't know enough about Hafley, but the guy is known as a great recruiter in northeast.
Larry Johnson has been promoted to Associate Head Coach.
I like these moves a lot.
How many years of recruiting did Hartline have? Seems to be working out okay so far and yes I know he was a player not a coach.
Mattison's record would indicate that he is an elite recruiter.
A joy which death alone can still.
And as importantly, an elite coach. Coach Mattison and LJ together? Bring us all the Defensive Linemen.
When I was 6 I was thinking about this rivalry. This one is seared on your soul, It's ingrained through every part of your body. -Urban Meyer
Hafley coached in college from 2001-2011. He coached at a few small schools, then Pitt from 2006-2010 (coached Darrelle Revis there) and Rutgers in 2011.
Lack of recruiting experience didn't seem to hinder Hartline
Posters like you make the 11W/Buckeye fanbase look sooooooooooooooooo intelligent.
Seriously, I can’t wrap my head around this. We lose a Mount Rushmore coach and somehow get better. Lol feels good to be a Buckeye right now!
“SWING!....... SWING!!........ SWING!!!!!!!”
Never heard of this guy before but I see he coached with Day in San Fran... I can already see the "OMG Day is hiring his friends just like Urban did" comments coming.
It's a beautiful day in Columbus, Ohio... and TTUN still sucks.
Personally I have no problem with that. In my experience when hiring there is no better reference been having worked with someone first hand. If you know what you’re doing, and I assume Day does, then there’s a pretty good chance you’re going to hire people who know what they’re doing as well.
Who? and then I looked him up https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeff_Hafley. And then I was still like who?
The only way this day gets crazier is if we can confirm the reports of Davis leaving and then the announcing of the new LB coach.
He has been relieved of duties.
"I don't think you necessarily have to get a trophy to be a winner." - Nick Saban 1/2/15.
Bucknuts has also learned Bill Davis will not return as Ohio State's linebackers coach.
We have confirmed OSU has reached out to Al Washington, but we have not confirmed if Washington is headed to his hometown of Columbus.
Will OSU announce one new hire per day so that each can have his moment in the spotlight?
I’m not liking this hire. It feels like another Billy Davis.
My thoughts exactly. Linebackers and safeties have to prepare for much different looks in college than they do in the NFL. Davis clearly wasn't able to adjust and prepare his unit. Hafley is a younger guy, and maybe having Mattison helping with players' assignments on certain plays will be a good thing. I don't want to just assume the worst about Hafley, but I think just about every fan wanted and expected Freeman or Washington as co-coordinator.
You do know this guy has coached Elite caliber talent players? Like Darelle Revis ,dude has coached amazing secondaries liked the Browns 2014 secondary that 3 Pro Bowlers , he also coached a buccaneers secondary responsible for 21 interceptions & top 3 in turnovers in the NFL
I agree. I felt like we could have landed a more known quantity at the college level, like Freeman or Kentucky’s DC. I would be more than happy to look like an idiot with this take, but my first reaction wasn’t positive.
Hafley coached in college from 2001-2010. Coached Revis in college at Pitt. Also coached under Schiano at Rutgers. He has college experience coaching D-backs, but has been in the NFL the last 7 years.
Thus, he has experience recruiting the Jersey area.
Where the hell are people coming up with this hot takes? You've probably never heard of the guy but already you're like "YEP BAD HIRE". Guess who has heard of him, and thought highly enough of him to entrust his own reputation to? Ryan Day.
In my opinion, the combination of Mattison and Hafley is a home run. Two ace recruiters. One defensive mastermind. One apprentice that will fill in to continue and cement DBU. Just need a young hire for the front 7 and the succession planning will be complete fir when LJ and Mattison retire. Love the strategy.

My question is whether he still has the "want to" on the recruiting trail. It's been since 2011 since he recruited
Hafley is a huge hire—great upgrade to Davis!
This is the Grinch replacement. Davis is still (somehow) employed.
A secondary coach with a nice amount of NFL experience? You mean, our DB's will be taught to get their heads around? Sign me up.
If you're going to play a lot of cover 1 and cover 0, you don't want your dbs getting their heads around. If we're playing more pattern matching schemes, then you'll have eyes on the qb.
Also, NFL experience is pretty useless in terms of determining if someone is any good at coaching football.
I know I sound like a broken record, but he coached for 10 years in college before going to the pros.
So does this mean Taver is gone or is this the Grinch replacement?
Outside of Larry Johnson, the defensive staff is getting scorched Earth
Make preparations in advance. You never have trouble if you are prepared for it.
"just a guy, nothing more, nothing less" ~ Some troll then *poof* he was gone
Two hires and neither of them excite me. Mattison would be a great hire as Defensive Quality Control but I don't like hiring a 70-year-old defensive coordinator. Hafley has never even served as a coordinator before, and has spent the majority of his coaching career in the NFL. I'm not crazy about hiring NFL guys to coach linebackers or safeties at the college level because the offenses in college have their fair share of differences from NFL offenses and they can force linebackers and safeties to read and react differently. Thankfully we have Fuller and White back next year. I could really use an Al Washington or Marcus Freeman hiring announcement right about now.
But it worked so well with Davis.
Believe me, the second I looked into Hafley's coaching history, I had PTSD of Billy Davis, and I don't think it's even been 2 hours since Davis has been off the staff. I have no reason to be optimistic about this hire, and it will take a HUGE improvement on defense this season for me to believe that Day made a good choice with this one.
FYI--Halfley coached for 10 years in college and then 7 in the pros. Big difference from Davis.
Those saying Mattison is the other "co"... are you speculating, or is that being reported? I know Mattison is being brought on staff, but has his title been determined?
When I die, sprinkle my ashes over the 70's
Please tell me he and Mattison will run either a quarters scheme (Like Ash) or a pattern matching scheme like Bama (wow, that hurt to type something I like about Bama
I think the letdown is that we heard a lot of really interesting, positive names out there... Mike Tressel, Corey Raymond, Bill Burch, Al Washington, Jonathan Gannon, Matt House... etc. Then we get a soon-to-retire Mattison and some DB coach we've never heard of.
This could work out really well for us...and I'm going to trust Ryan Day (who has a lot to prove in following Urban so I know he's not just winging it)...but this is underwhelming given the names that have been out there.
You win with people.
And so forth...
9 Units Strong!
You heard a lot of random names.
Let's be honest, Mike Tressel was never coming here.
Taver is gone. Press release from OSU said these 2 will join Larry Johnson on the defensive staff. No mention of Taver.
2 spots still open
Well I mean the last guy they hired from San Francisco worked out well...
What is with all the Co-coordinator positions? Why can't one coach run the offense and one run the defense? It seems like the whole, "if you have two quarterbacks, you have zero quarterbacks" philosophy. Not sure I like this anymore...
It's a way to justify paying them more money.
I was going to post that .I like one boss and the rest Indians. Imagine Hillary and Trump Co/Presidents?
You are a brave man
I'm thinking the old guy mentors the young guy for a year or so. Then the old guy rides off into the sunset and the young guy takes over.
What is with all the Co-coordinator positions?
Yeah with all the "Co"-this and that and now "Associate" this and that and so on, we're going to need an expert in the English Royal family to help explain how the titles and protocols will work: who stands where, how different coaches are to be addressed, where they sit on the team plane, at dinners and other functions. It gets complicated! /s
Seems like a good combo to me, at first glance and on paper, which is what every one of our analyses are right now. One is an older, experienced veteran with a pretty good record of success both on the field and in recruiting, and specializes more in the front four. The other is a young guy with fresh ideas, an up and coming name, also with a pretty good track record and who seems to have a lot of buzz around him, and specializes more in the secondary. Sounds like a good pair to get together and run a defense, not to mention give the young guy a bit of help coming into his own as a DC to perhaps take over on his own once Mattison is ready to hang it up.
Hafley came recommended to Ohio State by Greg Schiano, with whom he worked for a year at Rutgers and in Tampa.
— Kyle Lamb (@kylamb8) January 7, 2019
Not sure what to make of that coming from an ex-employee...
You're too stupid to have a good time. -Dalton
I think he still wishes Ohio State success...
Schiano wants to be a HC. It sounds like he informed OSU that he did not want to return and offered recommendations of replacements. Not everyone who chooses to leave a job does so because they hate it and are trying to sabotage it.
Exactly, this could very well be at least semi-mutual. Day could say "look, Greg, I know you want to be a head coach, so I'd rather go after someone else who will be here for more than a year."
Gee, Rutgers d, Browns D, and 49's D.

What I'm hearing....
Haftel and Mattison Co-DC's
L. Johnson will be D-line coach and Asst. Head Coach
We're talking to both Freeman and Washington about LB position
I haven't heard anything about Taver
I don't know anything about Haftel, but the general buzz is very favorable right now
So he's a Co-DC that specializes in secondary coaching. I would have to believe he'll be heading up the safeties if Taver Johnson stays on?
Also, if Mattison is in the fold, his specialty is DL... Larry Johnson isn't going anywhere, yes Mattison is the co-DC but what positional group is he heading up?
Wow, I'm not negative on anything that's happened today, it's just a lot of change REALLY fast. Let's go get em!
Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.
Same one Schiano did, which was none in particular. Once they added a 10th assistant, there's room to have 1 guy not specialize in one position
Sorry Urban, Woody is still my favorite
Take it FWIW, but someone trustworthy trust told me that Corey Raymond to Ohio State is unlikely to happen. Think it would be a great hire for Buckeyes, but being told right now not to expect that.

I like the release of this information.
1. LJ as associate HC
2. DC x 2
3. Still waiting for the position coaches.
Hang on for a fun ride this Monday, good luck to the 11W servers.
I hope he succeeds, but nothing about his resume or results make me optimistic.
Not even the coaching three pro-bowlers at Cleveland part?
Coach Day knows what/ who he wants and goes and gets it.

If our defense would have been just average this season, we are playing tonight. Cannot get any worse.
Cannot get any worse
The Big 12/Oklahoma would like a word with you.
So this essentially rules out the possibility of getting Marcus Freeman, right? Freeman is already a DC, I don't know if he'd be too crazy about losing that role, even if it meant coming to tOSU, to be just a position coach. I could be wrong though. I hope there's a good announcement coming to us about Al Washington or Marcus Freeman in the near future. The first two defensive hires Day has made are very questionable to me.
Co's often tend to be a problem unless it's simply to get a higher salary for a coach in waiting.
So was this guy unemployed until now?
No. He has been the 49ers DB coach the last few seasons
Hes the reason I am in the NFL today. He taught me how to study the opponent and what to look for. Took me from a inconsistent starter to an All American. One of my favorite coaches at any level and a lifelong friend. Great Hire https://t.co/ixI8ppMKJ1

Accidental double post
That's ok, it's worth seeing twice. Better than all the hot takes from people calling it a bad hire after they first heard the guy's name 6 minutes ago
Crazy that any fan would be down on the moves today after the ridiculous struggles on defense this year. Even a casual fan could have told you the problems this year, yet the defensive staff waited until it was too late to make any adjustments.
If nothing else, Day is not messing around with egos. The Iowa and Purdue debacles were due to stubbornness, egos and lack of game planning by the defensive staff. Hell, they could have hired 2 high school coaches to run the defense and I would be happy.
Change needed to happen.

Time will tell, as with all new hires. Kerry Coombs was just a few years removed from being head coach at Colerain High School outside of Cincinnati when Urban hired him. If his hires don't produce then Ryan won't be here long
Day is attempting to fix the team's glaring problems, and he's doing it swiftly.
What more could you want?
Let's not immediately hop on the negativity train, aided by the sole reasoning of "Because Bill Davis."
I think we can manage to be a little more nuanced than that. This guy isn't Bill Davis. Give him a fair shake.
HE'S MAKING IT WORSE -- TWO HUGE "SWING AND MISSES" LAND ON YOUR BUTT FOR RYAN DAY HERE WITH THESE LAST TWO HIRES -- THIS DEFENSIVE STAFF IS GOING BACKWARDS!!--
Caps don't make your argument more convincing. Chill, homie. Give it a chance. It's January 7th. Got a ways to go here before we see anything.
Stu thinks we should have hired Nick Saban as DC I'm pretty sure. He's one of those kinds of fans.
I think you just need to crawl in a hole until the season starts. I've about had it with all of the "doom and gloom" people on here, knowing damn well they couldn't do this job 1/10th as good as Day will.
The juice is worth the squeeze
Lets see who goes where and does what before we judge?
After going 4-12 this year in the NFL, why would he want to leave?
Welcome aboard, Coach Hafley!
You're going to have some great players to work with. Make 'em shine!

...yep, great players and even better fans...
and even better fans...
Yep. And I'll count on you, AC, to coach 'em up.
Mahalo, GTH, it's such a refreshing change to hear classy comments like this.
Are you from the Hovenaut school of Moderating?
Or perhaps the John Wooden school of coaching?

Both great role models, Silver.
If only Day would start making some changes.
I am not super excited about either of these hires but see the basis for both. They lack that Boom but do not lack success.
Mattison has been a great D coach for years. He has been the rock of the Michigan program even when they were low. My MI side of the family loved him and his recruiting. They aren’t happy today.
Hafley seems like an up and comer ready to make a jump. His last few stops have seen great improvements. Several top 12 NFL defensive backfields.
While not sexy, both these seem like solid picks to settle our horrid D. Remember, we had a horrid D this past season. Let’s add an up and coming LB and call it a day.
To be fair...nobody considered Day a sexy hire when he was brought on. Worked out great.
Right. That is what I was getting at.
GOT A GUY READY TO RETIRE FROM SCUM IN MATTISON AND A GUY FIRED BY SF 49'ERS AFTER BEING A PART OF THE WORST TEAM IN THE NFL FOR THE LAST 3-4 YEARS -- GREAT HIRES COACH DAY!!
Dude shut up
I hope you're caps lock button is broken otherwise you're as obnoxious as you seem.
ANYMORE "RE-TREAD" WHITE GUYS OUT THERE TO HIRE??
You add nothing to this community with ridiculous comments like this. I hope you get banned so you can use one of the 10 other accounts you have.
You know, this comment ought to get you kicked off of here.
I BET THESE TWO BORING GUYS ARE GONNA DO GREAT IN RECRUITING LIVING ROOMS IN THE 2020 ERA!! PFFFFFFT.
Will you please shut the fuck up? We get it. You don't like the hires. Go bitch about something else.
You've convinced me, getting drunk on Monday's is a great idea!!
I only get drunk on days that end in Y so no Monday drinking for me...
I heard in jail you can only get arrested for driving drunk on Monday's, that's why. #jailhouselawyer
Someone ban this troll loser already
Dude, please logoff and take a valium.
Welcome aboard Coach!!!!
And I have ZERO problem hiring guys you Coached with at other stops. That's what coaches do. Heck, I don't care how or where a guy comes from if he does his job at a high level.
We don't now how Day will react if and when a Coach isn't delivering... Urban's problem wasn't hiring Earle's grandson or his best man.., his problem was letting them hang around when they weren't getting the job done..
Here's hoping if it comes to making those decisions Coach Day is more Coach Saban then Coach Meyer..
We don't now how Day will react if and when a Coach isn't delivering.
I think we’ve already seen that he won’t tolerate it. They weren’t his hires, but Day was very vocal about the support Schiano gave him earlier this year. Shows he can make a decision on performance and not loyalty.
Could be..... but I need to see the dust settles first before I come to that conclusion.. For all we know Schiano is off to Temple and him leaving has nothing to do with Day wanting someone else..
And I'll go to my grave thinking the defensive problems were MUCH more Urban then Schiano..
I have to wonder if, with Mattison at least, Day is trying to maximize recruiting payoff. Otherwise ... it's hard to get very excited about a 70yo who's long been rumored to be about to retire. Feels almost like a placeholder until someone else becomes available a year or two from now.
Never heard of Hafley before, so I really don't know what to think. Last guy I had never heard of was Ash, and that worked out pretty well.
GREAT---I HOPE !! THE KEY QUESTION FOR ME IS : CAN HE RECRUIT THE BEST YOUNG MEN FOR BUCKEYE FOOTBALL ?
old griz veteran
I though Day would be indebted to Schiano for his help during the first three games, but Day is freaking cold-blooded. Being cold-blooded is not a bad trait for a head coach--just ask Satan.
Nut on top
This guy has not coached in 2 years. No one has wanted him for 2 years and all of a sudden he is some DB guru. This reeks of a desperation hire.He has no recruiting ties. This is literally Bill Davis 2.0. I am not impressed with how the defense is being handled right now. Mattison is old and wont last any more than a year maybe 2. This guy we pulled out of the soup kitchen line. This is Ohio State and we need to be pulling the best defensive coaches out there.
This guy has not coached in 2 years. No one has wanted him for 2 years and all of a sudden he is some DB guru.
Before you post, check your facts. He has coached the last three years with San Fran.
Do you struggle with reading comprehension? He has been the 49ers secondary coach the last 3 season. I suggest doing a little research before making yourself look like an uninformed ass when you post.
Holy hell the mouthbreathers are out in full force today. Set down the can of busch light and read before shitposting.
I try and never shit post, but I do have a case of Natty in the fridge.
The lord of brevity.
Busch light...must live in Iowa.
Shiner Bock all the way!
He coached through 2018 in SF. Let’s get our facts straight if we’re gonna make soup kitchen comments.
Great coach. Hard worker. I personally would go to war for the guy. Great hire. I expect great things. #GoBucks https://t.co/QdpQvnQY45

I prefer to make all of my judgments on this hire from all of the experts on this site. How can you trust a former player who he coached more than some guy who is drinking Natural Light and eating Doritos on his couch every Saturday and Sunday?
I resemble those remarks. Especially if they are Cool Ranch Doritos.
...not that there's anything wrong with that.
Now I need some Cool Ranch Doritos
Does a recliner count...because I love my recliner...
So with all this hiring going on, Is there room for Al Washington??? Hope we get him to coach the LBs but also to RECRUIT, he almost poached hometown Harrison to the dark side
Yes, Davis’s spot.
Will Harbaugh up the anti for Al by making him a Co DC?
I'm hoping the "Co-Defensive Coordinator" tag is just for money and enticement to leave purposes. I assume Mattison will be the one calling plays...because Hafley has never done it before by my research.
One things is for certain...when Day, Mattison, Hafley, Hartline go to recruit...they can tell every single kid what it is going to take and what the NFL is looking for. All four have extensive experience in the pros. That can only help on the trail.
So I just assume all the people who are pissed about these hires are the same ones who wanted to conduct a national search when Urban retired instead of just promoting Day?
I get that it's 2019 and it's trendy to be #MadOnline but holy shit, this is just dumb. What has Day done that would lead anyone to doubt him? Did him developing the best QB in big 10 history (arguably) cause a problem? What about having the number 2 offense in college football this last year? OR what about bringing in the highest rated qb recruit in our history? Who specifically came because of Day?
Also, as mentioned by others, I love this cold-blooded nature Day has with the coaching staff. Much needed.
I can see Hafley in the box and Mattison & LJ on the field. Key will be who calls the defense and I think it's Hafley.
Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing.
Hafley has never called a D and spent the last 7 years in the NFL.
I'd be pretty surprised if it's not Mattison who calls the D.
the empire never ended
It's not official, but all signs point to @OhioStateFB offensive line coach @CoachStudOL staying with the Buckeyes.

it's easy to understand the volatility of this forum. i for one don't know a damn thing about these two, but on the suface it IS a little scary. i haven't read anything yet about how successful they've been. one of the complaints about last year's defensive staff was that they weren't developing 4 and 5 star recruits. another knock i heard was that they couldn't adjust/game plan to their opponents. and finally, they looked like journeymen moving from job to job. if these guys are TOTALLY opposite, then i'm all in. if we see the same shitty defensive play, i will join the chorus that is bound to get loud. the age thing doesn't bother me at all as long as they are effective. go bucks!
Sincerely, X Prytanis
San Francisco 49ers cornerback Richard Sherman on Ohio State co-defensive coordinator/secondary coach Jeff Hafley: "His preparation is some of the best I've seen. I've had some great defensive back coaches, great defensive coaches, great defensive minds and he's right up there."

Richard Sherman on Jeff Hafley: "He's with his preparation, how he breaks down film and how easy and simple he makes the game plan sound and how easy he makes it for guys to understand. He paints a very vivid picture of what you're going to see and it's all about executing."
— Garrett Stepien (@GarrettStepien) January 7, 2019
Yeah, but what do any of these guys know about football when compared to our army of angry fans who don't even know how to spell this f'n guy's name? /s
I see today's moves as a transitional plan.
Day has a lot on his plate with minimal experience on the defensive side of the ball, so he has clearly decided t0 rely on well-established coaches to fill his personal void in knowledge. To that end, I'm guessing that he has relied on Meyer per the Mattison hire, while Hafley is clearly his guy, which suggests that familiarity and comfort level was THE key factor (hopefully, not at the expense of expertise and recruiting ability).
For me, the most disturbing twist here would be if Day retains Davis and Tavers, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and presume that it's just a matter of time before he lets both of them go. My guess is that Day wants to empower Hafley to hire a new DB coach and Mattison to hire a new LB coach.
In the big picture, per the 2019 season, it's hard to imagine the Buckeye's coaching won't be capable enough on defense in terms of Xs and Os, or else relatability to coach up ballplayers. However, at least for now, the staff looks especially weak from the standpoint of recruiting.
In fact, should Day make the horrible misjudgment of keeping Tavers and Davis, the Buckeyes suddenly might go from having THE best crew of defensive coaching recruiters in all of college football a few years ago to perhaps having the worst and oldest recruiters of any major Power Five program. However...
That's why I believe that this is a three-step transitional move, wherein Day
1) hires 'safe' guys that he can fully trust to know what they're doing per Xs and Os and getting more out of the existing, talent-heavy roster; 2) develop Hafley's ability as a DC as he works with a highly experienced staff; and 3) scout around this year and next to find the best possible coaches who can also recruit.
The lynchpin for success with this move depends on Hafley ibeing a really personable guy and a top-notch recruiter (for a top college program, not Rutgers), which remains to be seen. For now, basically, we're relying on Day's judgment, and I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and see how it plays out.
That said, if Day keeps Tavers, I'll raise my eyebrow above my hairline as my doubts grow a lot higher. And If he keeps Davis, well, sorry, as much as I like a whole about Day so far, I'll immediate conclude that he's merely an offensive specialist and nice guy who simply isn't head coaching material.
However, I fully trust that he will dump Davis, or rather, he'll have Mattison or Hafley show Davis the door.
Anyway, I can't say the new hires are home runs, at least not on the surface, since Hafley might be a classic overreach as a "buddy" hire (i.e., repeating Meyer's nepotism syndrome), and Mattison's best days 'might' have passed him by, on top of which , they might both damage the program per second-rate recruiting ability, but... I dunno... maybe they could turn out quite well.
I say, let's see if and when the next shoe(s) to drop. But at this point, if nothing else, I give Day due credit for sending the message that the defense's performance in 2018 simply was NOT acceptable.
Davis is already gone just no announcement yet
Thanks, Keith--I hadn't caught that news (at least not at elevenwarriors), and I hope it's confirmed sooner than later. Meanwhile, I did see the rumors about Washington but with no follow-up... yet. Assuming that Mattison likes him, that should happen fairly quickly.
If that happens, I hope he's good and a top recruiter. The Buckeye score didn't reflect that, but that can be explained away as a matter of interior talent plus Don Brown was calling the shots.
Anyway, let's hope we're taking the best guys from TTUN and making them weaker rather than stronger--sortuva a matter of killing four birds with two stones situation.
Very glad house is being cleaned on that side of the ball. Its hard for this long time Buckeye to understand how such a talent laden roster was the statistical worst defense in the history of this storied program. Think about that.
Hafley is going to crush it at OSU. On the field and in recruiting.
Who the fooook is this guy ?? I thought we were going after LSUs DB coach
" we play to win the game "
I assume they will both kick ass because Day knows his stuff. That's pretty much all I have to say about that.
Hafley is too young, and Mattison is too old. Where's Goldilocks?
