HS
LWiegand91's picture

Pet Peeve of mine. Since Bruce won, Every other big 10 school has had a coach of the year. In fact each school has won it at least twice. During this time OSU coaches won the big 10 (with ties) 16 times, finished in the top 10 - 21 times, Top 5 - 13 times, National runner up 3 times and 2 National Championships (rest of Conf 1). Expectations are fueled by recruiting, which according to Urban is the most important part of the job. When do you get credit for that? Other conferences seem to have figured it out, Pete Carroll, Dabo, Saban, Bowden, Spurrier, Stoops and Mack Brown all won their conference coach of the year during their prime runs. It is criminal that Tressel and Meyer never won it (Cooper's TTUN and bowl record might keep him off).  Names of guys that won the award when OSU finished firs in the Big 10 and you can ask huh? Leon Burtnett 1984 (Purdue 7-5), Bill Mallory 1986 (Indiana 6-6), Gary Banett 1996 (NW 9-3), Ron Zook 2007 (Illinois 9-4), Bill O'Brien 2012 (PSU 8-4) and Jerry Kill 214 (Minn 8-5).

Illinois 5
Indiana 2
Iowa 6
Michigan 5
Michigan State 3
Minnesota 2
Northwestern 4
Penn State 5
Purdue 2
Wisconsin 5

HS
SilverHaven's picture

I was curious about who won the Big 10 coach award when Tressel won the nat'l champ in 2002 season and won the Game of the Century in 2006.

2002 Kirk Ferentz, Iowa (11-2)
2006 Bret Bielema, Wisconsin (12-1)

So at least they had good teams in those years.

Ua Mau ke Ea o ka 'Aina I ka Pono. The life of the land is preserved in righteousness. (Hawai'i state motto) Aloha nui kakou.

HS
PhillyNut's picture

Since 2000 the head coach at Penn State has won it 4 times, the head coach at Iowa 4 times, Wisconsin coach 3 times and the MSU head coach 3 times. 14 out of 19 years to those 4 schools and none of them played in the BCS nor have they made it to the CFP. Meanwhile the Buckeyes have 2 national championships, another appearance in the BCS, and an additional appearance in the CFP.  Bottom line is that the bar for an Ohio State coach is so high that it is impossible to reach.  If Meyer could not win it in his first year going undefeated after a 6-7 season there is no hope for a Buckeye coach to ever win it.  So be it.

I don't buy one goddam drop of gas in the state of Michigan!

HS
Trebor40's picture

Yes, these things do not happen in a vacuum or as a rash expression. Day has developed in his mind what he needs and is setting about acquiring the pieces! This should indeed be troubling to our opponents as it points to the fact that men were interviewing for their jobs this season and did not even know it! He keeps his own council and acts suddenly! HELL YEAH, things about to get real!

HS
NavyBuckeye91's picture

I'm of the opinion that Meyer probably would've made some of the same coaching changes, and the anxiety of that (dismissing his best man and another longtime coaching friend) were contributing to some of the stress-related issues that were exacerbating the effects of his arachnoid cyst. Stepping aside when he did, allowed Coach Day to begin the search process in Dec and provided an amount of plausible deniability for Meyer when these coaches were replaced.

I just hope fans give him a chance when the first “bad stretch” happens; let’s remember even Urban’s teams lost two in a row at the end of 2013.

And I hope fans do not count on Day equaling Urban’s absurd winning percentage; even the great Nick Saban has not done that.

I am hoping Ryan Day is the coach for the next 15 years plus and that, with an expanded playoff system of 6 teams probably happening  down the road, he will have the opportunity to guide the Buckeyes to more than one national title.

HS
Darksungm's picture

I will gladly take Ryan Day's level of passion over That Walmart-Khaki-Wearing, Chicken-Hating, Sleepover-Loving Screaming Lunatic Up North. During Day's 3-game audition I think I saw him yell at someone once during the Oregon State game. Other than that he had the same expression until we did something positive and he would cheer and crack a smile. Has Harbaugh ever smiled in his life? Lets hope Day is up to the task of winning important football games. The games he's supposed to win are expected whether he likes it or not.

That Week 5 game vs. Scott Frost in Lincoln is gonna be really interesting.

It absolutely takes a little bit of crazy to run this program. It also takes something else, and that something else has been evident in this first week on the job - the ability to have the tough conversations and do so without hesitation.  The fact that Day has moved so swiftly to make staff changes, which resulted in the removal of experienced coaches, tells me that he is not one to shy away from the hardest, but most important part of the job.  It's obviously still early, but this combined with what we saw when he took over on August 1, makes me think he has "the right stuff" for the job.

Also an editorial comment,  Ryan Day is actually the second 2-time OSU coach.  Jack Ryder, who was the second coach in program history, came back in 1898 after the 2 guys who succeeded him lasted only one year each.

HS
ohiopanda's picture

All coaches in the HOF since WWII is just bonkers. Is any program even near that?

We've had it good for a long time.

HS
NavyBuckeye91's picture

OSU has seven coaches in the HoF (all post WWII), the most of any D1 school. The next closest teams have six, including ND and UM, which have pre-war coaches on the list.  If I had to guess, Syracuse or A&M might be the only schools with six post-war coaches in the HoF.

https://footballfoundation.org/sports/2018/7/31/college-football-hall-of...

DYK - Jim and Lee Tressell are one of only two father-son pairs in the CFB HoF, and they're the only father-son coaches inthe HoF. The other pair is Archie and Peyton Manning.

Day's staffing choices tell me that he is willing to be a boss first and friend second. This ability to keep his personal feelings in check and be ruthless for the good of the team is exactly what is needed to make the kind of tough calls/adjustments to create a savagely unstoppable juggernaut of a team. I've been daydreaming about the OSU team who doesn't give me heartburn against lesser opponents and handicap itself with loyalty to underperforming coaches and players. Day's first impression has me hopeful that we'll see this team live up to it's full potential. It's a new Day.
