Need more consistency from Woods and Jackson. Kaleb was a beast but he needs some help.
Agreed, but obviously something was wrong with CJ. Played an awesome 1st half (10 pts, 5 rebs, 5 assists, 3 steal) and hardly played in the 2nd half.
I am guessing leg cramps were the issue. They have bothered him in the past.
Woods gave us next to nothing though.
I play, coach stays. He goes, I go.
Man. If we could only get all of the guards playing their best at the same time. Big if.
Agreed. Need more consistency (and less leg cramps) out of CJ and Woods.
On a positive note, Muhammad and Washington played a pretty solid game considering the opponent. Those two have been pretty consistent all season, especially Muhammad. They could be quite the duo by March.
Hard fought game. We played a real choppy 2nd half. No CJ for most of the half was felt - I thought he was hurt, even. Woods was outplayed by K. Ahrens, and Cassius Winston was the difference in the 2nd half.
Man we went cold at the end! I told my buddies the first team to 70 would win the game. Luther hit that FT to go up 70-69 and I thought we had it locked up with 5:29 left. Crazy we only scored 7 points the rest of the game.
Salute to Caleb, he banged with Columbus-area’s Nick Ward and really held it down for us offensively. It was a wrap once he fouled out.
Good learning experience for the hoops squad. They’ll bounce back.
Everybody wants to be heard, and the easiest way to be the loudest is to be the hater
No CJ for most of the half was felt - I thought he was hurt
Holtmann said CJ had cramps.
Our honor defend, so we'll fight to the end !
I really thought the Basketbucks were gonna pull this one out up until that last 5 minutes. Caleb fouling out really hurt, but the real difference was the guard play. When the team needed them to be intense and on point to finish strong, they did just the opposite on both ends of the court. I think if Washington would have had a bigger role in that last 5 minutes it would have had a different outcome though
~ The Buck Guy
I think the reason he wasn’t out there was because of his defense. MSU guards were consistently getting around him, leading to easy shots for themselves or others. I think it’s the product of playing really good guards much more than Washington playing poor defense. Other guards were just able to do better defensively.
Washington made several bone-headed plays down the stretch. Missed free throws by Wesson and others at the wrong time hurt. Just showed how young and immature we can be. At least we never quit.
Izzo wore em down. The officials that is. Never seen such a crybaby.
I was gonna blame this on Chip...
There's no points for second place, gentlemen.
Three Buckeye players had 5 fouls in their home venue and how physical MSU is with their Bully Bowl goons they have no players foul out. Buckeye guards didn't make their shots. Need more Kyle Young in the games.
Young is solid. He jumps!
Izzo will take the win any way he can even if it means acting like a crybaby. What's crazy is that he probably has the best talent in the Big10 but also uses a win by any means approach. Players initiating contacting, swinging arms, tackling players, and arguing for every call.
I'd rather be a minute early than an hour early, 'cause I like to procrastinate.
He is a douchebag. I will actively root against them in March.
He’s a little bastard, too. I’ll bet he’s not any taller than 5’4”.
Are refs instructed not to "T" up coaches who are constantly whining, bitching and screaming at them? A couple of games of being T'eed up twice early in the game and forcing him to "coach" from the locker room. Maybe the refs are just too intimidated by the coach icons.
Double post. sorry
He was D-II All American-dude could ball in the day.
Yep, like I said below he is the dirtiest motherfucker there is in the game. And he whines and cries on top of it. He really is an embarrassment to MSU and the game of basketball. People used to make fun of Crean, but Izzo is far worse, and he's getting even worse in his old age.
I was losing my mind with how unfairly the refs were calling the fouls on the Bucks and ignoring all of the roughhousing by MSU (especially off the ball). And I wasn't the only one. I watched at the Green Turtle near College Park here in Maryland and the folks there watching were all pointing it out. Some were saying it looks like the officials have an agenda, thinking the conference wants to get MSU to a #1 seed this season. I'm not one for conspiracies, but I'll be damned if I can explain the obvious difference in how the fouls were being called in this game.
Their CENTER has two fouls in an entire B1G game, and the offense runs through him?! GTFO, impossible.
Our players got shoved in the back on rebounds at the end. Refs let it happen so we should have done the same at our end of the court.
I am not sure if I have ever seen Izzo during a game when he is not complaining to the refs or looks like he is in sever pain.
So frustrating to see the outcome of the game affected so much by interference of the officials
Go Bucks! TTUN tears are best! Beat Wisky!!!
Seemed like an inordinate number with both teams in the double bonus early 2nd half. Not fun to watch with a whistle almost every play.
Refs were lost. Couldn't keep pace with speed of game.
Let's delete the last 6 minutes of that game from human history. It was a phenomenal first half, but that got ugly in the 2nd. Honestly not sure we made more than 1 defensive stop in the entire 2nd half.
Hard to play defense when the rules state you aren't permitted to do the following:
Stand too close to an opposing player
Breathe too heavily
Look in the direction of an opposing player
Obviously it is up to the discretion of the refs to determine whether any action fits one of those descriptions, but Ohio State was clearly the only team violating any of those conditions down the stretch.
Tough Game, great first half and rough second half. We looked sluggish at times, some tough officiating in the second half, and CJ and Woods not playing well at all makes it tough to win.
On a positive note, I think Washington and Muhammad will be very very good. This was the first big conference game for them and both played very well at times.
Use this to learn, fix things, get better and make it count later in February!
On a positive note, I think Washington and Muhammad will be very very good. This was the first big conference game for them and both played very well at times.
Yep. These two freshmen are impressive. And Ledee is coming along too. Just keep getting better, freshmen.
Thanks for the thread and Bingo, IP.
Izzo is the dirtiest motherfucker in the game today. He constantly whines, and his player play dirty. Fuck him and that program. I don't mind losing a game, but what I don't appreciate is a coach like him who cheapens the game. It will be fun watching them go down in flames early in the tournament again.
It all depends on how close the refs call the NCAA ref game. Game is called fairly MSU is in big trouble. The biggest problem with Big Ten referees is they expect MSU to play goon basketball and they get away with it.
Biggest problem with Big Ten refs is that they wear striped uniforms and get to officiate basketball games. They're fucking terrible, year in and year out. Games would be better officiated by geese.
Were there any Buckeyes left on the court at the end of the game, or had everybody fouled out? Haven't seen so many fouls in a long time.
Success - it's what you do with what you've got. - Woody Hayes
Not very often you see a Holtmann squad crumble like that in the last few minutes. Disappointing performance from Woods and Jackson today.
This is definitely where I parked my car.
refs and woods/Jackson not showing up
Stay golden, Ponyboy.
Jallow needs added to that list.
Jallow didn't play any different than he normally does. Dude isn't a shooter/scorer in the least-if you want to blame Holtman for giving him a scholly when he needed bodies on the bench-fine, but it's not like the dude was out there playing below his normal level.
You’re correct, hence adding him to the no-show list.
Man there were some crappy calls in the game. But of course they go MSU way because Izzo whines about everything. Oh well onto the next game
Successful people do what they have to, whether they feel like it or not
Not all of them. Was shocked kaleb didn’t get called for a charge when he knocked Ward over.
They made up for it on the next trip down the court with the blocking call.
Ward also flopped, it should have been a no call on both ends
It’s hard to win when you have trouble. . .
Not to mention missing a number of lay-ups and in close shots. Team may need to do some practice drills shooting lay ups and in close shots under pressure.
Another frustrating home loss. Our guards were terrible today! Keyshawn Woods was a total no show. C.J. Jackson out almost the entire second half with CRAMPS?? Are you kidding me! Your 5th year SR Guard doesn’t know to hydrate before a game??
Two awful foul calls against Wesson in the second half changed this game. Games aren’t won in the first half. The crowd did not bring the same energy in the second half and neither did the team.
Crowd never brings the energy in the Schottenstein Morgue! Value City Arena (Schottenstein Center) is the House That Yanni Built! I wish they would use that arena for multipurpose events and use St. John's Arena for basketball games.
The crowd was pretty rockin in the first half. I don’t blame the arena, I blame the fans.
Both it's the arena and the fans in general. The arena is designed for multi-purpose use and just not enough blue collar fans. Rocking in the first half, you have never been to Mackey Arena, Cameron Indoor Arena at least St. John's in the early 90s that was rocking.
Other than maybe a few games in the Thad 5 era, the place is very quiet. It is a horrible basketball arena.
It was pretty loud today, but in general it just ins't the same as SJA. SJA is a basketball arena, and the Schott was built on purpose as a multi purpose facility. Sadly, the purpose it is least suited for is the primary one - basketball. I would love nothing more than to tear down the Schott and move back to SJA. I know it won't happen but I can still want it to happen.
Yes, I know that. It's not me you have to convince. OSU just needs to have more multipurpose events all year around in the Schott to make up the difference in attendance so the basketball team can go over to St. John's Arena. It's ideally suited for basketball. It's never going to happen. Honestly, I am surprised they haven't torn down St. John's Arena.
Another frustrating home loss
Yes, a loss—at home—but only the 2nd loss at all this season. And to a talented, very experienced, top-10 team.
These Buckeyes are YOUNG and fairly inexperienced. As long as they keep getting better, I'm liking it. They only had 5 turnovers today, and that's a big improvement.
On to the next game, on Wednesday: Beat Rutgers!
Buckeye freshmen played a combined 55 minutes*, and had only 2 of the team's 5 total turnovers against a very good team. Add made 3 assists.
There's still work to be done on rebounding and defense, but give credit when due: that's good ball handling.
* Out of team's 200. So frosh logged 27.5% of OSU's minutes. And sophomore Jallow (who is the same age as the freshmen) added another 10 minutes.
Two foul in the first 1:26 of the second half. Game.
Why did Young not play in the second half?
That was a bad final 5 minutes.
We used to have three’s but no one underneath. Now we have some power underneath but no three’s. But there’s potential here.
If you die before you die, then you won't die when you die.
He played in the 2nd half, he had that monster put back dunk
I think we're really seeing now how many problems KBD solved last season, because other than Kaleb Wesson, there's just no one on the team who creates shots and forced defenses to respond to them. In that respect, it reminds me a lot of Matta's early teams, with Terrance Dials playing the part of Kaleb. Jackson didn't draw a free throw the entire game. That shouldn't be the case for your point guard.
The most "loud mouth, disrespect" poster on 11W.
Agree to an extent, but I think two guys that can break defenders down and get shots consistently are Muhammad and Washington. But it is hard to rely on that from Freshmen that don't have 5 star elite talent.
Hopefully they get better with that as the season progresses.
Lu Mu drove tge lane and scored in the final couple minutes of desperation. He needs to do that in the flow if the game. Don’t save it!
I'm really not even sure how we had the lead for such a long stretch of the game today. MSU was clearly the better team and played much better for nearly the entire 40 minutes. I guess we sort of took advantage of their short period of inconsistency late in the first half, but we didn't get any back to back stops at all in the second. The very few times we did force a missed shot they rebounded nearly all of them. Our offense was stagnant for way too much of the second half, theirs was constantly moving. Add that in with the typical Izzo-directed dirty play in the last 3 minutes and you end up with the result we got today. It's a long season and this game won't matter come March. Time to get back on the road and get 2 wins before coming back to the Schott. Go Bucks!
This game showed exactly where both teams are. MSU is an experienced team with national title aspirations. The Buckeyes are young and most haven't been in a game like this. MSU is where the Buckeyes want to be but aren't quite there yet. Give the Buckeyes a little more experience and a little more depth and we're there. This team will get nothing but better. And that's pretty exciting!
I don't want to be anything like MSU. OSU will be just fine. This was 1 game out of 20 vs a veteran team.
Michigan State is very good, but they are definitely not a national title contender. Nick Ward and Cassius Winston are elite players but the rest of their team is kind of average. But I completely agree that once we get more depth *cough* CJ Walker *cough* DJ Carton, we are going to be major B1G contenders again.
I don't think your giving enough respect to MSU'S Josh Langford (didn't play against OSU today). I'd say he is an elite BIG10 player averaging 16pts per game, 84 percent ft shooter, 40 percent from 3 pt land, 4 rebounds per game etc. Mix him in with Winston and Ward and MSU is a team with a good chance to win The BIG10.
"We're going to give the ball to dumb-ass and grind meat"--Woody Hayes
If this was football. And the SEC, ESPN would call this a good loss.
Down the stretch was tough - learn and grow Buckeyes
See you in Indy !!
It's not a rivalry .............. it's a wreckoning.
Seattle Sounders 2019 MLS Champions
You could see it coming, as we were struggling to convert. Washington played a bit out of control and his age, but hard to blame him when he is the only guy trying to create offense. Nothing against Andre Wesson, but when you are dependent on him for scoring, particularly from the perimeter, we’re gonna have some long nights.
Definitely need to be more balanced in the final four minutes.
The refs called the game differently when MSU had the ball. Several times they bailed them out with calls. The Winston 3...Ahrens on the rebound...it was just pretty blatant.
Gotta get that defense squared away. Sparty basically had free reign to do anything in the 2nd half - hence they shot 70+% from field. Team needs to learn that hoops is a full 40 minute game and needs to match the opponents intensity when they ratchet up.
Put this one in the rearview mirror - Weds is another tough game.
Not going to beat that team when your seniors aren't able to play, be it physically or mentally, and you have no front court depth.
Their Ahrens had a good game, maybe our Ahrens should have had more of a chance?
Luther did a good job on Winston for a while, but just could not contain him in the second half.
I'll just add, I try not to complain about officiating these days but it wasn't easy today.
This might have been our best chance to get a win against a ranked team. Oh well. Couldn't make any plays down the stretch.
the empire never ended
started a bit sluggish, but the last 12 minutes of the first half was probably the best basketball we played all year. sharing the ball, making correct reads outside the set offense, taking care of the ball (seriously, only 1 turnover and it was the correct play to make, just bad timing) beating msu on the boards and preventing them from getting out in transition. The second half we started solid, but defensively just weren't good enough. They shot well, but the were getting easy looks. The differences in the second half were cj not being able to go (woods was awful and you could tell he couldn't match the athleticism on the floor) and kaleb picking up a couple of dumb early fouls.
I didn't think the refs were great, but didn't think they were better for one team or the other. kaleb easily could have picked up another foul or two and should have been called on lowering his shoulder for his 5th foul. We don't have shot makers, so we have to rely on movement, sharing the ball and kaleb creating out of the post. We were pretty good in the first half, but msu clamped down in the second half and with kaleb picking up early fouls and cj hobbled, we just didn't have enough fire power.
It was a great game for almost 35 minutes. Spartans have lots of depth and that is talented depth as well. They can afford to rest a starter or 2 and never miss a beat. We struggle when one of our guys has to sit any length of time. Our talent is not as deep. A poster above stated that C J Jackson was suffering from cramps. On T V, Johnson and Jackson had no clue what his problems were. So, I was getting pissed that C J was not in there. Don't we have trainers who can help players with cramps. This is not the first time he has had to sit for a long period of time. I hate to pick on any freshman on a basketball team. But, how in the world did Coach allow Washington to play that long when he jacked up 3 after 3 and made none of them? Also, Woods seems to be getting worse as well. And he is a graduate transfer. Hang in there fellow Buckeyes. Better days are ahead for this team! GO BUCKS!
I refuse to bang on Holtmann’s coaching.
My thoughts on everything......................
1-This game went about as expected. tOSU didn't play bad, but w/ Jackson out for most of the 2nd half screwing up the offensive flow, and MSU being able to out-athlete tOSU, the more talented team won.
2-Kaleb Wesson is kinda playing like Sully, w/out the NBA hype clock.....scary.....................
3-Coach Holtman has this team playing about as well as it can. He can't increase the athleticism of the roster mid-season, but he has them playing hardnosed d and unselfish offense. This team lives and dies by the 3-coach isn't going to yank players for missing open 3s-except maybe for Jallow............
4-It was cool to see Urban and Justin Fields sitting next to each other courtside.................
