Can someone please explain to me how there is a 5* DB out there that was and is interested in coming to TOSU and we haven't been recruiting him???? WTH was going on with our DB coaches? We need new blood onvthe Defensive side of the ball! Get me Al Washington in here (he has been rumored to be coming) or Marcus Freeman (my personal wish for LB coach) Put Schiano back with the safeties and somebody find out what it would take to get Coach Coombs back, whatever the price...he's more than worth it!

FYI Marcus Freeman isn’t leaving his DC job to come coach LB here. He should be looked at for the DC job. I also like Jon Tenuta (from C-Bus) who is on Ficks staff at UC and has probably taught Marcus Freeman a lot about being a DC. Tenuta was a big name only a few years ago but got caught up in quite a few head coaching changes- I remember he played really agreessice style of defense with ND and GT I believe. His defenses put a TON of pressure on the QB

HS
BucknutinNC's picture

Yea I wasn't meaning bring Marcus Freeman in just to be LB coach, I would like to see him brought in to be a Co-DC/LB coach but I didn't say that clearly here. I've said that on other threads though. I think he deserves a shot to be a DC here as well, but what I meant was as his specific position coach outside of DC responsibilities to be with the LB's

Jaiden Woodbey. FSU may be in shambles but he started as s true freshman. He had 59 total tackles, which was 4th on the team. Brendon White (46), Isaiah Pryor (31) and Jahsen Wint (26) combined for 103 (although presumably some would’ve been on special teams).

BuckInNashville's picture

Agreed - I don’t feel the loss here like I did when  Vrabel, Herman, Fickel, and Coombs left. It would be interesting to go back and see what the WSU writers and fans said when Grinch left there for OSU.

(likewise, when Beck came from Nebraska, I had Big Red fans telling me from the get go that he would not be good for OSU QBs)

HS
fear_the_nut70's picture

That is because all those other guys you suggested were here longer, that's all.  Grinch turned the D around at WSU, a place that is notorious for big offense and a tough place to recruit.  The book on Grinch hasn't been written yet.  There are tens of thousands of kids out there, and I am sure it is common for some to fall through the cracks everywhere.  Suggesting this is proof we didn't want Grinch is ridiculous.  Urban brought him in, and though he has had some misses, most worked out, and that was enough for me.  Posts like this are very similar to "didn't think that kid was very good anyway"after  he chose another school.   Pretty weak IMO.

You are entitled to you own opinion, not your own facts.

HS
yantubos's picture

No one seems to question the Grinch hire. I do. Before Grinch was co-DC, the Buckeyes were pretty good - statistically - on defense. Grinch comes on and they tank. What gives? I'm not sad to see him go.

HS
fear_the_nut70's picture

Do you know the difference between causation and correlation?

You are entitled to you own opinion, not your own facts.

HS
BuckInNashville's picture

Yes, I am a statistician. No seriously - MS statistics.

Causation means x variable caused y result . Not a coincidence, which can be measured by correlation.

But there are two sides to evaluate.

Did Grinch cause the safeties and defense to be bad ?

Did grinch cause the safeties to improve ?

I cant answer the first, but it’s painfully obvious that he couldn’t judge who the best safeties were in his room. The improvement came by chance, a coincidence that fuller was ejected, and White came in and never left the line up since. Sure as hell not causation by the position coach.

certainly players have shone as a result of injury or unavailability of the starter, aka Nick Foles taking the Eagles to a Super Bowl championship. But Carson Wentz went down, and the back up was inserted. Wentz didn’t perform questionably all year where the coach should have considered a change anyway.

HS
BuckInNashville's picture

Kevin, can you explain how the coaching staff covers recruiting ? For example, I would have expected Mark Pantoni to have made continual contacts after Coombs left, followed by Taver Johnson calls.

And still, even after the recruit reaches out, Hartline makes the call. (Maybe Johnson is on vacation or something).

OR is there a regional set up for recruiting where Hartline covers Texas ?

HS
TXNut2488's picture

Hartline seems to be turning himself into one hell of a recruiter so perhaps they made him the big gun to go get this kid?

HS
iowabuckeyes's picture

I think it’s a combination of things. Pantoni and his staff are responsible for vetting a player's skill, character and interest, probably acting as the first point of contact, maybe even going as far as to extend an offer—sometimes, it’s the “non-committable” variety that’s contingent upon further analysis and building mutual interest. Then either the position coach and/or whoever covers that area gets involved further vetting the player’s skill and building the relationship with the player and his inner circle (coaches, parents, guardians, siblings). So Pantoni probably did his job but it sounds like, if the kid is to believed, Grinch dropped the ball building the relationship. I don’t know if Hartline covers Texas but he is being credited with Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who’s also a wide receiver.

The Buckeye coaches, at least under Meyer, did have regional recruiting areas.  Of course positional coaches or Urban himself could also be involved, but they had regional assignments.

Always interested in reading about the Salem witch trials, even on a Saturday morning. Makes sense that there would be medical conditions that would have contributed to the hysteria no doubt.

Tate vs Justin will be fun to see. I want to see Fields with free reign, unlike what he seemed to have at UGA last season, but I really like Martell also. Spirited competition will likely create a great offense, I hope.

Big one for the BasketBucks. Looking forward to watching that one. Enjoy your Saturday everyone.

My prediction, Tate transfers. I know we had the best passing QB in OSU history in front of him, but there were plenty of opportunities for Tate to throw the ball and they wouldn’t let him. Hope he stays, but how could he if he gets passed over again.

HS
iowabuckeyes's picture

I realize I may be a lone voice in the wilderness but I absolutely hate it when posters suggest or predict certain players will transfer. It’s like predicting close friends will get divorced—what purpose does it serve? To be able to say “I told you so” if it happens? That’s not the high ground.

"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." - Edmund Burke

HS
BuckeyeatTSUN's picture

Not a lone voice Iowa.  11w staff, and many OSU fans, have been very critical of Tate recently.  I don’t understand the disdain.  In any event, we can run off a proven winner and 4* QB because we have Cinderella now.

HS
BuckeyeNut71's picture

I agree 100%. Fields knows nothing of the OSU play book and hasn't proven anything at the college level. Tate has put in a lot of work for OSU, knows the playbook, and has built solid relationships and trust with the other players. In my mind, he is "next man up". I loved his response during the Rose Bowl interview. Competition is good, but I think he's the QB until someone can beat him out. Not easy to do. Steel will sharpen steel.

BuckeyeNut71

HS

HS
BbBnD's picture

And one of the games they did, he went 10/10. If I was betting, I’d put my money on fields. Having said that, all of this “Tate can’t throw” stuff is absurd. Does he have Haskins’s arm? No, but he throws much better than many of our past QBs.

HS
iowabuckeyes's picture

The sample size to evaluate on Tate’s arm is too small. It’s based on lukewarm performances as the third man in the spring game, hardly playing past the Rutgers game, and when he did, being relegated to running the wildcat. Sure, who doesn’t wish he was 6-3/215 but I love his mobility and feistiness. I’ll be cheering for him just as I will Baldwin and Fields because I want what’s best for Ohio State.

But I also think about what happened to Alabama when Jalen Hurts took over in the second half of their 2016 opener—two QBs left during the season and one quit immediately afterwards but at least he stuck around. My #1 fear is that Justin Fields coming in could drive both Tate and Baldwin away. And then it’s just Fields and who? Our backup’s # should be 0 because that’s the margin of error we’ll have if Fields gets hurt.

"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." - Edmund Burke

HS
BbBnD's picture

I might need a bigger sample size to figure out if someone is going to be a good college QB, but I don’t need more to know if they have a good arm and can make throws.

HS

HS
Zone's picture

This off-season is amazingly ridiculous. I want to call Grinch a bum, but don't know enough of the story. However, a 5* #34 player in the country should never ask about his recruitment, especially at the DB spot. Garret Wilson is a better recruiter than Grinch, that I am sure of.

HS
fear_the_nut70's picture

See above, assistant coaches had recruiting zones under Meyer, might not have even been Grinch's area (always wondered why you would see a receiver coach reach out to a DB for example).  Also, don't underestimate that some of these kids go to twitter and say stuff like "recruit me bro" simply because they like the attention, never having any serious interest in the particular school in question.  This is just a guess on my part, but since there are only so many hours in the day, coaches have to be savvy in how much time they spend on a kid they have reason to believe isn't seriously considering your school.

You are entitled to you own opinion, not your own facts.

HS
73buckeye's picture

I talked last night with a friend who is a Georgia fan, lives in Athens, Ga. He says the reason Fields didn't play more was his inability to learn to read defenses. Makes some sense that this skill might not be developed well in high school, given the massive talent spread, but Fields is reportedly a smart kid and could be taught, given the right coaching. Not familiar with Ga's QB coach, but If I remember right, Kirby Smart was mainly a defensive guy. Ga's play calling kinda confirms that. Maybe that's one of the reasons he chose OSU and Ryan Day. Gonna be an interesting year.

ernie

HS
SEQUOIA473's picture

I live in Atlanta and hear all kinds of excuses why he left and that is one of a few I’ve heard that I don’t believe. Fields didn’t play because the guy that got there a year earlier helped take that team to its first title game in 38 years, and if he’d handed the ball off just a bit more they’d be national champs. Smart wasn’t benching a kid with what Fromm helped accomplish. The issue is Smart. If he was more offensive minded and had better offensive coaches he’d understand you need more than Fromm to beat Bama, and Fields was that guy. I just don’t buy the “He can’t read defenses”. Vince Young was arguably one of the least intelligent QB’s of the last couple decades that won a title and he was a runner, which UGA needs to do more of, whether it’s with their backs or QB. One thing I’ve learned living in GA, UGA fans are the utmost experts with excuses.

That Apple article is spot on. A mature blue chip vs. constant speculation that has to end sometime.

The Apple article was accurate, but they missed one contributing factor.

With every new version of the Mac or iPhone they keep removing input jacks or changing the input technology. My iPhone 8 has no headphone jack. I have to use a stupid adaptor to use my favorite headphones. The new Macs have no standard USB ports, etc. etc.

This is a disincentive to upgrading. People want to use the peripherals they already own, not be forced to buy new ones.

Because Popeye's is incredible and cheap. In terms of pound for pound and return on investment? Very hard to beat Popeye's IMO. Especially when you factor in they're everywhere from the south to Ohio to Boston. I liked Hot Chicken Takover when I lived in Cbus but isn't even an option for me now.

Additionally, I am over the moon about Fields & Yurcich, ready for a Basketbucks win and some NFL playoffs. Go Bucks!

No wonder he didn’t recruit me hard to come to OSU , Can anyone tell them to recruit me hard ?

Ohio State co-DC Alex Grinch will be Oklahoma’s defensive coordinator, @BruceFeldmanCFB reports

Grinch was never really all-in, it sounds like.

I am not saying this is true based on this, but if true it is not a professional approach.

Go All-In wherever you are.  Be a pro while you are there.

That is all.

In old Ohio there's a team that's known throughout the land...

Honestly, good riddance to Grinch.  He never really seemed like he fit.  I can’t put my finger on it, but it never seemed natural.

Congrats Mr. Wilson!

Lets got get that 5star corner!

Meanwhile, over on Oklahoma boards, they're probably accusing us of being salty that he left and won't be missed.

I don't know what I don't know but it seems like maybe there were too many chiefs and not enough Indians on the defensive staff, i.e., when you have two DCs, you don't have any. Assistants need to check their egos at the door but when you bring in a hotshot younger coach to work with older guys in their 50s and 60s and he's looking to implement his scheme, you're going to have some heads butting. I believe Day earned the staff's respect, while Grinch may not have. If true, that doesn't make Grinch a cancer, more likely a poor fit. in hindsight. But again, that's only my speculation.

Grinch is going to have talent at Oklahoma that's comparable to Ohio State's so we'll see what he can do when he's not sharing the reins.

Don't know much about Grinch... Except our defense took a huge dip this year with him on staff. Good riddance!

Congrats to Garrett Wilson and Dwight McGlothern. May you both have incredible Buckeye careers!
