So here today's news roundup as best as I can summarize:

- Justin Fields is officially a Buckeye!
- 5* 2020 WR Julian Fleming tweeted he is a fan of the Fields move
- Michael Jordan declared for NFL Draft :'-(
- Alex Grinch left to coach defense in the Big 12 - lol
- Al Washington still looking good to be our next LB coach
- Stud looking likely to remain on staff :'-(
- Plane went from Columbus to Baton Rouge today - could be Aranda, could be Raymond, could be Busch??? Was def a tOSU plane though from what we can tell
- Ryan Day does not sleep much

In case you're interested here's the flight tracker info:

Plane def took off from tOSU airfield to Baton Rouge so it has to be football related IMO

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

Again hoping this is at least to go see Bill Busch the safeties coach at LSU. Here's his 247 profile with recruits he's being listed as having landed. One good thing to note about recruits credited to him is there are some 4* OL in there.

https://247sports.com/Coach/Bill-Busch-934/

HS

Does this get us back in on Elias Ricks you think?

HS
Dasniksder's picture

Maybe we are returning Studrawa to LSU.

HS

It's my dream that this is the reason and he's released back into the wild where he belongs

Probably going down to see if Burrow wants to transfer back.

I think our QBgeddon takes are going to be hot already without that! lol

You Got Barbecue Back There!?!?!?!

HS
buckslan's picture

I don't think Grinch is the answer OU fans are hoping for.
Julian Fleming WILL be a buckeye
Kinda bummed Stud will be retained but at the same time the OL wasn't that awful this year. The pass protection was the best I've ever seen it.
Losing Michael Jordan really really sucks. Now we are down 4 starters from our OL, but it still looks promising in 2019. Myers, W Davis, NPF, Munford... It's your time to shine.
I agree about AL Washington
It definitely isn't Aranda imo.

HS
XUBUCK's picture

3 5 Star Olinemen to replace the starters along with Bowen.

Of course, that is no guarantee, but it is nice.

HS
EvanstonBuckeye's picture

PSU fired their WR coach whom Fleming liked. Lots of time to build a relationship with new Nittany Lion coach, but Hartline + Fields + Day's offense would sure seem to give us a leg up.

HS
FieldingMellish's picture

From what i've read Fleming didn't have a great relationship with PSU's fired coach. When asked about his recruitment he mentioned Franklin as his strongest relationship on PSU's staff.

HS
BuckeyeJay's picture

could be Aranda

You know he makes $2.5 million per year at LSU right?

HS
TheBadOwl's picture

I doubt that it's Aranda but OSU could definitely match that, actually.

Hell, OSU could theoretically match Aranda's salary, triple Marcus Freeman's salary, double Busch/Raymond's salaries and actually save money on the coaching staff.

Position 2017 salary 2018 salary
HC $7,600,000 (Meyer) $4,500,000 (Day)
dc $1,500,000 (Schiano) $2,500,000 (Aranda)
DL $750,000 (Johnson) $750,000 (Johnson)
LB $500,000 (Davis) $750,000 (Freeman)
cb $345,000 (Taver) $850,000 (Raymond)
saf $800,000 (Grinch) $750,000 (Busch)
total $11,595,000 $10,100,000

(Entirely possible that my math is off)

This isn't counting the offensive staff. Theoretically, could roll that $1.5 million difference into the offensive staff, which combined to make $3,140,000 last year (if you count Zach Smith's $340k salary instead of Hartline's $46k interim salary). When filling out the rest of the offensive staff, they could essentially guarantee that any position coach would be the highest paid one for their position in the nation.

Obviously this is a deeply flawed pipe dream (since swiping three great coaches from LSU is a massive longshot, Al Washington appears to be joining which would give them a sixth defensive assistant and OSU may decrease their overall coaching budget), but damn if it's not a really fun one.

When I walked in this morning and saw the flag was at half mast I thought, "Alright, another bureaucrat ate it." but then I saw it was Li'l Sebastian. Half mast is too high. Show some damn respect.

HS
FootstepsFalco's picture

No chance it is Aranda, who currently makes $2.5M a year.  Raymond and Busch both at ~$400k to $450k annually, so maybe?

Pain heals. Chicks dig scars. Glory... lasts forever.

HS
EvanstonBuckeye's picture

I'm no good at math, but some quick calculations and, if I carry the one, would lead me to believe that Aranda makes as much as the rest of the defensive coaching staff combined.

HS
NorthPoleBuckeye's picture

why is there such a wide range of salaries on the coaching staff. Is Aranda a co-head coach or something?

HS
Woodshed's picture

Because the head coach is a COMPLETE buffoon.

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

To be fair he's half human and half frog

HS
4thandLong's picture

I heard we're bringing back Joe Burrow from LSU today........we need more competition in the QB room to challenge Dr Phil (aka Coach Yurcich).

Only kidding well sorta. :)

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

Ok jfc yes I understand Aranda makes a lot of money it was more a tongue in cheek than anything. Coaches move all the time for various reasons though. Bama's OL coach just left for Georgia Tech. It's his alma mater so I get that but he ain't making more money there than at Bama. So coaches leave current situations for reason outside of money and even alma maters sometimes.

HS
EvanstonBuckeye's picture

I wonder how a Corey Raymond, who has recruited and developed a lot of studs, feels about making 14% of what Aranda makes? I can't imagine it feels great.

HS
osu992's picture

Yeah, but in Aranda's defense, Raymound makes 700% of what his studs make.

New Day for OSU. Same noon for TTUN.

HS
bd2999's picture

That the LSU DB coach may be coming to OSU. What potential position or if he is for sure is unknown. One would assume he would be DB coach though.

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

Not sure but looks like Corey Raymond liked a tweet by tOSU staff and even uses the hashtag #brotherhood. It's very interesting he would retweet or like the 'Best Fridays in Football' tweet from our staff though

If Day pulls this off he's straight up destroying this off season. IMO this is the best DB coach in the country hands down and only Coombs could compare.

HS
WestDesMoinesBuckeye's picture

He uses #brotherhood in tweets well before this week.  Would be huge to land him, but not getting my hopes up too soon.

HS

HS

Probably not...but he also doesn't 'like' much. Get to November pretty quickly with his most recent likes. That said, there is nothing particularly noteworthy about the content of this tweet. Not sure how much to make of it.

New Day for OSU. Same noon for TTUN.

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

No it's extremely rare to retweet or like a tweet that comes from another team's verified Twitter account. Especially the one he retweeted from our staff there was no reason for him to do so he has nothing to do with the tweet and it wasn't about a kid associated with a certain school like Tyler Trent who recently passed away (RIP Tyler btw) to show support. So in the years I've been on Twitter I've never seen assistant coaches from other schools do that out of the blue randomly like Raymond did above.

HS

Is it too early to do the arithmetic? 16 commits plus Fields=17. 9 graduating seniors plus Bosa, Jones, Jordan and Weber=13. Need 4 more to leave to =85. Who?

HS
bd2999's picture

Yeah, not really a worry at the moment. Folks worry about it but the coaches are the ones to figure it out in the end.

HS
IBLEEDSCARLETANDGRAY's picture

KJ Hill, Arnette, and Sheffield may all leave so there is 3. I also still think some of the guys currently on the roster whom Urban recruited may transfer out, we just dont know whom yet. Maybe Max Wray?

HS
BurningRiverBuckeye's picture

And there's always guys who see the writing on the wall with playing time and transfer. Guys who have been in the program for a couple years and aren't even sniffing the two deep or have been passed up by an underclassmen.

HS
MorrowCoNut's picture

As much as I hate to say it, I think you can add Tate Martell into that mix. I would be shocked if he were to stick around.

HS
Buckslip's picture

I think you are forgetting the future NY Giants QB...aka Haskins. That's your 4 right there. Even then I still expect a few transfers from guys low on the pecking order and for us to grab 1-3 more commits for the 2019 cycle. Likely the 3 we've been discussing...I forget the names, but the short CB, the mountain of a man for OL, and Nester.

HS
TheBadOwl's picture

Haskins, too. Plus I'm sure a few guys will transfer out. Wouldn't be surprised to see Snead out either.

I think OSU will add 1-2 more guys in the 2019 class and perhaps another grad transfer. A few interesting names here (Taj Griffith, Ykili Ross, Richie Petitbon) who were former top recruits.

When I walked in this morning and saw the flag was at half mast I thought, "Alright, another bureaucrat ate it." but then I saw it was Li'l Sebastian. Half mast is too high. Show some damn respect.

Can we stop with this? Every year I see the same thing, ppl freaking out about being at 85 during signing day.  It's 85 at camp, and over signing has become the norm.  You are figuring out something the coaches don't already know.  Okay, sorry Poco Loco, rant over.  I have just seen this thing, one too many times.

GO BUCKS!

HS

Was thinking about this a bit. Wondering if it’s either max Wray transferring or stud staying. Either would be unexpected technically and neither would really classify as a bombshell

HS
Hanawi_'s picture

Might show some concern with Nester. Though, I'm fairly certain Vimahi is planning on going on a mission for 2 years.

HS
bd2999's picture

I would not think so. They need more offensive linment period. Even if Nester stays in the class they would probably like to add another guy or two on the OL.

HS
rampageripster's picture

we need lots of bodies at the OL... I'd like to see them add Nester plus at least one more... right now we barely have a 2nd line and there are not 3rd stringers along the line

Cause I couldn't go for three

HS

Good. I hope we have a chance.

We need options besides Nester. There is a kid in GA named Bell that I'd guess they have looked at. I always thought Harrison-Hunte would make a good OG but I haven't heard anything about him in a long time.

HS

Rumors are that the whole defensive staff except for Larry Johnson are gone, including Schiano.

HS

Raymond from lsu as DB/CBs

HS

Wouldn't we also need a new safeties coach?

Not sure how they will assign responsibilities but the number they would need is 4, if you are going to have an even split between offense and defense.

HS
Northbrook's picture

At the very least LSU will be paying more for their coaching staff.

HS
Belliott's picture

Honestly I don’t know if they can. I’m surprised they’re paying aranda that much. The financial situation of Louisiana as a state basically means that the football program subsidizes the university. I know a few years ago, they gave more to the university than any other program because they had to.

Heres and article that touches on it. https://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2016/2/12/10978892/lsu-football-budget-louisiana-governor-john-bel-edwards

There's been a little buzz about him transferring in the past few weeks. Something about him wanting to be closer to family IIRC.

Dwight McGlothern, a defensive back recruit from Texas. It's posted in the 2020 thread.

HS

2020 kid, but all but confirms that Grinch wasn't here for the long run and didn't do much recruiting.

HS
Beantown_Buckeye's picture

He's a 5 star with Texas A&M and Bama as the favorites so someone should probably get on that.

HS
seltsaC's picture

Hartline & Paris Johnson just followed him. Looks like we're not wasting time getting after this one.

HS
actionstanleyjackson's picture

Grinch come on man. Sounds like he didn’t do much of anything here

Stay golden, Ponyboy.

HS
EvanstonBuckeye's picture

Just get the feeling that once Grinch realized Schiano wasn't going anywhere and that he wasn't going to grow in that shade, he seemed more like a grad assistant than a co-DC. A bungled hire all around it seems.

HS
Hanawi_'s picture

Agree. They basically paid him 800k to coach one position. Guessing that's not what he was expecting when they offered him the job.

HS
Bucks19's picture

He had 1.3M reasons to leave

HS
NHBuckeye's picture

I don’t understand how Urban let that happen.  He’s always harped on how important recruiting is.

Fields of Dreams

HS
BornAndBredABuckeye's picture

Don't let the door hit you, Grinch. Shit, Day should have dropped him off in Oklahoma on the way to Louisiana just to make sure

HS
Beantown_Buckeye's picture

On the flip side, in Birm's article today he says although Grinch only had one 3* recruit this past cycle, he is energetic on the trail and will be missed in that respect. Obviously that's just Birm's take but it would have been pretty easy for him to take the opposite position given that Grinch didn't have a big recruit this year.

HS
EvanstonBuckeye's picture

Read that, too. I'm not sure what to make of it. Maybe Birm just being magnanimous, or suggesting that Grinch is really a good coach, but that this just wasn't a good fit. I'm all for the one-and-done if it just isn't there. In fact, I have a lot of friends who had similar marriages.

HS
IBLEEDSCARLETANDGRAY's picture

Wow, so we have not one, not two, but three assistants who dont recruit. Was Grinch moping and pouting because he wasnt named sole DC when hired last year or is he really that awful a coach?

Coach Day please fix this. Pretty please with sugar on top.

"You're the patron saint of the totally effed" - Hot Tub Time Machine

HS
Spartan13's picture

Do we know why Stud is safe? Day seems to be ruthless so far and may be dumping every defensive coach but LJ and getting a transfer QB. OL depth is also pretty close to disaster mode going into his fourth year.

HS
bd2999's picture

I am not sure that we know anything until things are official. It would be a surprise to see Schiano get the axe though. I am not sure I think he is being ruthless at all. Accepting a transfer QB may upset some of the other QBs but his job is to make the team better.

HS
OSUlewis's picture

With what Day has been able to accomplish so far as the head coach, I am just going to trust that he knows what he is doing.

HS
OSUlewis's picture

I checked out the Oklahoma boards to read their thoughts on their new DC (mostly excited) and saw a thread about Jadon Haselwood's scheduled "public" commitment today. There were several posts commenting that they think he ends up at Ohio State. I didn't even think we were being considered anymore.

HS

HS
EvanstonBuckeye's picture

Rivals suggested the same thing: that he could end up anywhere as his recruitment was so unpredictable. I know the game was a logical time to announce, but I'm still hoping the Fields transfer gives him a last-second change of heart.

HS
Belliott's picture

Word out there is he signed during the early period like tyreke smith last year and is just announcing where that was today. I would think if it wasn’t Oklahoma, we would have heard long before today.

So AA game today:

East: Nester, Miller, Chambers, Harrison, Hickman

West: Wilson

So, here are the “Man that name sounds familiar” list:

East:

QB: Graham Mertz (Wisky)

WR: David Bell

WR: Wandale Robinson (Nebraska)

LB: Justin Jacobs (Iowa)

LB: Kane Patterson (Clemson)

West:

DB - Dax Hill (TTUN)

and yes, it’s Tua’s brother and yes, it’s Jake Fromm’s brother.

Think Zach Smith (and maybe the rest of the staff too) kinda botched that one.  Hartline tried to get involved again with Bell once he took over, but it was too late.

Yeah, I remember the talk during the early signing period was that Bama sees him as a safety, rather than a corner.  It was part of the reason Daxton Hill was upset and ended up back at TTUN.  He didn't want them to take three safeties (himself, Battle, and Hellams).

So Wilson made two amazing catches but also had 2-3 drops . Hopefully he can clean that up.. consistency is as important as big plau ability.

A few of the reports from his practices this past week told the same story. Absolute stud who stands out above his peers but needed to clean up some drops. Nothing wrong with noting facts. He's a HS player he's not the finished product yet. Excited for the OSU staff to help him get to where he needs to be.

Per Gleitman:

- Washington has an offer (Givler confirmed as well) so now it's all on him whether he accepts or not.
- Definitely conversations happening with both Corey Raymond and Bill Busch at LSU
- He's also hearing about another name that would make people say "woah" but didn't divulge it bc he wants to make sure instead of just starting a rumor which is the way things like that should be handled so props there.

Good stuff Spooner.

Is there any logical reason why Washington wouldn't leave scUM for OSU? Is there even a benefit in staying there? I could understand if his family is firmly entrenched there, but if not, I see no reason to stay there if OSU has offered him.

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

Alex said its someone from the BIG so I'm not sure who that could be but going through coaching staffs by school I listed some guys that could be worth a woah I suppose

PSU: Sean Spencer (DL) or Terry Smith (DB)

Wisconsin: Jim Leonard (DC/DB) or Bob Bostad (LB/former OL)

Michigan State: Mike Tressel (DC/LB)

HS
actionstanleyjackson's picture

My guess would be Tressel.

Stay golden, Ponyboy.

HS
buckslan's picture

Or Don Brown. I know a lot of people cringe at that idea but I still feel like he's one of the best out there and would flourish with our talent. Jim Leonard would be a huge addition but extremely unlikely as he's a Wisconsin guy through and through.

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

Reports are that Schiano is likely back so I don't see this happening. If that's the case I really don't know who it could be honestly bc there's not one guy outside of Al Washington that I really want on this staff.

I don't want Brown either bc he's a guy who refuses to make in game adjustments. He couldn't stop the mighty Florida offense under Feleipe Franks at QB who's trash. That's a big no thanks from me.

HS
buckslan's picture

I don't think Brown is really the reason for the Florida disaster. Not having two first round picks on your defense playing and a plethora of injuries proved to be a major factor. Don Brown has had good defenses at BC and scUM, I wanna see what he can do with high 4/5* prospects at OSU. I'm not gonna let a few bad games turn me away.

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

He schematically couldn't stop crossing routes after being embarrassed by them by their rival on their previous game. Showed no improvement and looked like they schemed not thinking Florida would do it. There's nothing in Don's career to suggest he's capable of dominating a top 30 offense. If we want to hire him to dominate the crap teams in our conference then fine bc that's where scUM's top D stats come from. IMO he's a fraud and don't want him leaving there anytime soon.

HS
buckslan's picture

His inability to stop crossing routes wasn't anything to do with scheme, it was talent. Remember #28 getting burned play after play because he was too slow (aka a lowly 3*). scUM didn't have any better options to put out there. That kind of stuff would not happen with a Shaun Wade out there and that's the point I'm making. Give Don Brown these good players and you'd see a good defense.

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

They've recruited well enough to deploy personnel capable of stopping the mighty Florida gator offense. They didn't. Go ask any knowledgeable fan or analyst and they will tell you Don is exactly where we want him for a reason.

HS

Could also be mattison, used to be urbans d cord at florida. Would be pretty sweet if you think about it. I believe urban also said at one point in time he was the best recruiter he's ever worked with

HS
brothadudeguy's picture

He was also the DC for TTUN when they were complete garbage. This dude is 70 years old too. Now hes only a Dline coach for TTUN so obviously got demoted. I would tend to think this would be a terrible hire. I hope that's not true. Where are people hearing this from?

HS
Attack51's picture

HS
EvanstonBuckeye's picture

That was the name that struck me, too.

HS
TroyBuckeyeFan22's picture

I would also be impressed with that but he’s at his alma mater. It’s always tough, especially an in-conference opponent with a favorable path to a Big Ten Championship Game. I understand Wisky doesn’t have the title potential that tOSU does but I’m sure he’s loved there, unless we give him a huge raise I doubt it.

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

Very important to note that January 11 is the end of the dead period. So Day will need to finalize the staff lest they want to be behind the 8 ball on the remaining recruiting calendar.

So I think we will know the hires by the middle of next week.

Btw I'm also happy to announce that it's looking like Taver isn't safe and may not come back which would be another great move by Day.

HS
actionstanleyjackson's picture

Best thing Day can do is fire them all but Larry Johnson and being his own guys in.

HS
JarheadBuck's picture

It might help a bit, but the '19 class is already in the barn other than Nestor and any surprise.  So a few days one way or the other makes little difference imho.

That said, screw recruiting, he needs to complete the staff ASAP so I don't have to wear out my F5 key.

HS

They need at least 3 or 4 more. So I don’t know that they’re in the barn yet.

HS

I wishfully posted earlier about getting Busch and Raymond lol. I imagine the "woah" is going to whoever the D.C. may be. Best recruiting defensive staff in the country if this all pans out.

HS
tampatom's picture

This started way before Grinch decided to leave for Oklahoma wonder if he was told to take it as he was not going to be in the mix based on recruiting and safety play.

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

They were not about to pay Grinch over $1.3 million after this past season.

I mean he makes over $900K more than Corey Raymond and he's not 1/10th the coach or recruiter Corey is lol

HS
actionstanleyjackson's picture

Exactly. No way that much for a recruiting liability

Stay golden, Ponyboy.

HS
Belliott's picture

Most reports were they wanted grinch to stay but probably not at that price and they probably wanted him to share DC duties.

HS
Buckiowa's picture

Poster on LSU board saying that Corey Raymond is 50/50 on his decision. Is insinuating that LSU hiring Busch was a slap in the face to Raymond, who was expecting a raise.

I'm all for throwing as much money as possible at Raymond and making him Co-DC. Iowa's DC, Phil Parker, is also their secondary coach and he produces great DBs every year.

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

Yeah I'm sure he's a decent coach but that's not a 'woah' hire either. Not sure recruits would be all like "omg Phil Parker to tOSU!" on Twitter lol. Pretty sure 90% of 5* recruits have no idea who he even is.

HS
Buckiowa's picture

Hahaha that's definitely true. Just some honest speculation, because he's produced some great corners over the past few years that are now in the NFL including Desmond King and Josh Jackson, and the main knock on those guys was that they weren't super athletic, which won't be a problem with the kind of athletes tOSU recruits. Probably not a hire that would send reverberations around the CFB world like poaching Corey Raymond would for sure.

HS
Belliott's picture

He didn’t say recruits would go woah, but I agree. It would be a good hire but not a woah hire.

HS
actionstanleyjackson's picture

Feel like Raymond is using osu for leverage. And Busch is the more likely of the two to come here

Stay golden, Ponyboy.

HS
OSUlewis's picture

I think that is what he did in 2018 and LSU didn't really bite. He may be fed up with them not paying him appropriately at this point.

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

There was massive controversy in paying Les Miles' buyout bc they could barely afford it financially. As an institution they are not well off financially and it's not miraculously gotten better to my knowledge. You offer Raymond anything close to Grinch type money and they won't be able to match IMO. He's also not getting a promotion since he's been passed over at least twice now. Alma mater or not that's a slap in the face he's not the highest paid DB coach in the country or have any influence or coordinating the D.

As you so often tell everyone else, there is a thread for coaching talk and potential hires already. Multiple, in fact.

Ok cool thanks for the heads up but I like to have it one thread. Since one directly affects the outcome of the other :)

Let’s just add our game threads in here as well since the outcomes of those influence recruiting too.

HS

Actually they do not. Recruiting is literally all about confront and relationships and coaches influence that. Rarely do kids pick a school over the outcome of a game. It's always relationships and draft.

Tell you like everyone else that comes in here. Please feel free to start your own thread and make the rules within it. It takes less than a minute of your life to do so :)

It appears that he was at Rutgers prior to this year at LSU. I didn’t realize he was a quality control guy here in 2015. Also has coached at Wisconsin.

HS
Beantown_Buckeye's picture

His 247 page lists him as the secondary for Ricks and a 4* G from Michigan who signed with LSU this cycle. He was the primary for Ika, the big 4* DT from Utah they signed this cycle. He also was responsible from Prince Amukamura at Nebraska, although he was a 3* but obviously he developed very well there. It seems like he did fine as a recruiter in his one year at LSU but his history as a recruiter doesn't exactly jump off the charts the way Raymond would.

Praying to the football gods this does not happen. We don't need 70 year old dudes on the staff out recruiting. Bc if you think we were negative recruited for Urban's health there's no way they wont do that with Greg. I would hate this move.....ugh

I don't think it's ageism so much as many don't want a guy that's been demoted from the UM DC job to a positional coaching job while at the tail end of his career to become a corner piece of Day's inaugural staff. The DL role isn't open so if he comes to OSU is it a co-DC? If he's not good enough to be their DC as of three years ago why would we be ok with him here?

Maybe it would be as LB coach, in which case it's still an upgrade and not as terrible, but if we're going to poach an LB coach from UM Washington seems more exciting.

Here’s what I make of the chatter (and after speaking to a connected OSU booster):

OSU did reach out to Washington. They were confident but they offered him pretty much the sa,w positions so it was a lateral move. If Brown and GMatt retire, there is thought that Washingtoncould move up at Michigan. Who knows what that means. Probably not DC, but there are additional responsibilities he could assume.

GMatt us seriously considering retiring, but Harbaugh has pretty much been begging him for one last season. Brown is likely gone.

as for Pep, this seams like the classic situation where Harbaugh is getting a ton of pressure to make a big offensive change but he is resisting.  This last part is pure speculation. The prior paragraph is info from my OSU booster friend.
