In buckeyemail, which is the Ohio State email system, there is a Justin S Fields. Now, that doesn’t gaurantee anything, but it is extremely coincidental. Not to mention at Ohio state there is a numbering system associated with your school username. The first person with last name Smith is known as Smith.1 etc..

the number associated with the Justin Fields above is the highest I found when running a generic search on all last name Fields in the directory. Be clear, I did not look through every Fields in the directory ( there are 500 plus).

I'm sure he'll give you one to complain about shortly.  The Martell hate is absolutely insane here.  If I'm him I would be looking to leave OSU solely because of the lack of loyalty our fan base has shown towards him.

HS
avail31678's picture

Wha?  There's at least three people on this thread alone who are saying they don't like Fields coming here.  And there's been many people on the Tate threads saying they love his confidence and attitude.

I think people can be additionally excited that we are getting the highest rated prospect (from recruiting rankings) ever at OSU, and simultaneously not be "disloyal" to Tate.  This guy has the potential to be no the level ofTerrelle Pryor but with an arm.

Quite frankly, if Tate beats him out to win the starting job, then that's awesome because that means Tate is better than we all thought.

HS
Josh P's picture

I'm not saying I don't like Fields coming- I'm pumped for him to join the roster and his talent level is without a doubt going to blow us away.  I'm more referring to the people that are already crowning him the starter, or repeatedly bashing Tate for something that nearly every kid his age does:  tweet.

Again, if I was Tate, and the idea I'm getting from Buckeye Nation is basically that I'm chopped liver and have no chance, I'd consider that as disloyal.  Martell never lost a game in HS, played lights out this season when given the chance, and was pretty highly rated as well by 247 sports.

Fields gave a postgame interview at UGA where he came across as spoiled/entitled (referring to the time where he basically said "I didn't do shit, i handed the ball off good, how do you think i did" when asked how he thought he played) which rubbed me the wrong way.

I guess my overall feeling here is: why are we all so convinced Tate isn't good enough to beat Fields out, and why are we all so quick to turn our back on a kid who has already put in two years at our program for someone like Fields? It makes no sense to me.  Let them settle it during spring ball.  The best player will play and I already feel sorry for Tate if he loses that battle and has to hear "I told you so" from Buckeye Nation.

HS
Hovenaut's picture

I'm actually a fan of Tate, have been since I saw him play in the Army AA game a couple years back.

Have no problem with him at the helm, I just don't get why he's Tweeting incessantly about all this.

Keep your head down and grind.

Got M...igan gossip? Bang it here.

HS
BuckWylde's picture

Best post I've seen on the topic. Martell is a beastly talent himself, who has the advantage of familiarity and relationship with the new HC and the returning players on the team. Fields coming aboard just makes the QB situation ultra competitive, like it should be at an elite D-1 program like we have in Columbus. Haskins had  to spend 2 years watching Barrett before taking the helm and changing the offensive culture at a time when the Meyer spread offense had grown stale and outdated. If Fields has to bide his time behind Tate then so be it; but if he's good enough to come in and take the starting job from day 1, then good for him and the team as well.

I'm hoping that Fields has the self confidence to sit for a year or 2 and then  seize the appointed day with as much gusto and success as Haskins has enjoyed in his year as he starting QB. I'm tired of seeing gifted divas who don't want to compete and win the job as opposed to guys demanding guarantees for playing time they've yet to earn on the practice field.

Very nice!  Looks like a great talent.

That said, he has not been green-lighted by the NCAA to avoid sitting a year (based on what Kirby said the other day, I would expect UGA to opposed exemption from sitting out).  And even if he doesn't have to sit a year, Tate is a hell of a talent himself and has 2yr in the system and Baldwin will be 2yr away from injury and have a year in the system under his belt.  So, it's not like Field's would be strolling into a coronation.

Either way, I'm pretty happy with the QB situation.

HS
TheBadOwl's picture

I would expect UGA to opposed exemption from sitting out

I didn't see what Kirby said but this would be a bad PR play for them if the racial slur is used as part of the justification (even if playing time is his primary motivation) given that they're a higher-learning institution.

When I walked in this morning and saw the flag was at half mast I thought, "Alright, another bureaucrat ate it." but then I saw it was Li'l Sebastian. Half mast is too high. Show some damn respect.

HS
CincyBuck's picture

I tend to agree.  The "so what if you were called the N-word by a fellow collegiate athlete?" argument is a dicey one for PR purposes.  If I'm UGA, I'd prefer to let this happen without any further media coverage.

That said, still has to be approved by the NCAA I assume.  Though I don't know how that works when the former player's institution isn't fighting the grant of immediate eligibility.

HS
TheBadOwl's picture

If I'm UGA, I'd prefer to let this happen without any further media coverage.

Yeah I'm sure the UGA football program is probably vehemently against it, but their university and athletic department probably don't want to get into the PR nightmare of telling a young black man that he's overreacting to being called the n-word.

When I walked in this morning and saw the flag was at half mast I thought, "Alright, another bureaucrat ate it." but then I saw it was Li'l Sebastian. Half mast is too high. Show some damn respect.

He's not leaving because he was told that another student used the N-word towards him. He and his parents have already publicly announced that they aren't happy with his playing time and he's using this racial slur as a means to avoid the transfer rules. He was fully aware of the QB situation when he signed on @ UGA. I read recently that his sister signed an LOI to play softball

For the record, I don't disagree with you.  I just don't think it matters.  If the immediate eligibility is contested, the racial incident will be the first thing that comes up.  And it'll be blasted everywhere.  That's very, very bad for business.

HS
LCT's picture

That's what's unfortunate. No serious examination of facts can take place where one inarguably should. It's a bad state of affairs.

Lifetime vs. UM: L 8-1, C 7-0, T 4-0

HS
martin anderson's picture

I'm as happy as anyone, except maybe Tate, to see him come but if he's given immediate eligibility then the NCAA ought to just do away with any and all transfer rules. The rules were put into place to avoid this type of free agency among college athletes. I'm not buying the racial slur incident. If it was that bad @ UGA his sister wouldn't have signed an LOI to play softball just a month or so after this incident took place

HS

Can you only submit transfer paperwork to one school or is it like applying for college? You're not the only one.  We have QBs in line that imo are developing.  I don't want to see some kid come in and think he is going to jump them on the DC.

Also, his UGA highlights are not that impressive.  IE: he's struggling to find open WRs against bottom feeders like Austin Pea and UMass, and he has ALL DAY to throw it!!  This is not another Dwayne Haskins...Martell and Baldwin is where the competition will be imo -at least I hope.

Definitely not a Braxton Miller, which makes all these special little snowflakes dv's all the more humorous.

Are you serious?  I mean, everyone's entitled to an opinion -- and I wouldn't DV you for it.  But yours seems to be based on pretty much no concrete evidence, rational thought, etc.  Doesn't take a "snowflake" to recognize that.

Your biggest knock on the guy is that, as a true frosh, he isn't as good of a runner as Brax?  The guy who is arguably the best running QB ever to set foot on OSU's campus?  Yeah...  he must be a no-talent ass clown.

Let's take that analogy further: does anyone remember what Brax looked like throwing the ball his freshman year -- or, heck, most years?  Brax was great.  But he didn't look like Fields throwing the ball his freshman year.  Heck, early on, Haskins didn't look like it, either.  Does anyone remember any OSU QB that looked like that throwing the ball his freshman year?

I like Tate's talent a lot.  I was looking forward to him taking over the offense (at the same time bemoaning the pending loss of Haskins).  I wouldn't be surprised if he won the job next year.  But denying the fact that Fields is oozing with talent is just objectively ignorant.

HS

JT

JT didn't even play his true freshman year, if memory serves me.  But I vehemently disagree that JT ever had arm talent similar to Fields.

HS
Earthoid.'s picture

That he's not a Braxton Miller isn't a knock on him, it's just a fact.  As for the knocks I do have on him here are just a few:

  • He's not as fast as tate and appears to lack stamina
  • Nothing throwing wise stands out in his first-year highlights from UGA.  He seems to be a slightly above average strength thrower with good accuracy.  I personally think Tate is a better throwing QB at this point.
  • He doesn't appear to having any truly elites traits.  Not speed, not elusiveness, not field recognition (often double, triple clutching) and not release and arm strength (like Haskins)

That said, now that he is officially a Buckeye I'm rooting for him.  Maybe Day and Mickey can get him where he needs to be to be truly special and elite, but for me that's not going to happen immediately and if he has to sit out a year, and Tate gets a free year ahead of him starting, it's going to be hard as hell to catch back up.  I wouldn't be surprised if literally nothing comes out his transferring here.  The deck is stacked against him right now and so if he actually gets out of this what he wants, he'll have well deserved it.

I just hope that none of this affects the opinion of future QB recruits.  Personally looking at the situation as a recruit right now, it would give me pause and make me wonder if someday I might be heir apparent to the throne and then have them accept a 5 star transfer out of the blue.  As much as everybody says it shouldn't matter, you want guys who aren't afraid of competition, it does matter even if a kid won't say it out loud.

A gentle reminder to BE NICE. Plays guitar and makes iced tea in the winter.

HS
CincyBuck's picture

Well, we'll agree to strongly disagree.  To me, several great/borderline elite traits standout on film.  But we'll see.  Like you, I'll be happy with any QB who wins the competition.

Interesting point about its impact on recruiting.  But I suspect the OSU prestige and Day's reputation as a QB coach will strongly outweigh any potential negative impact.  Day turned Haskins into a monster in one year.  If he does the same with Fields, recruits will be lining up.

HS
Triv's picture

He's a true freshman who was more athletic than most players on the field. He was pulling after his first read on most of those, as many jumpy freshman do (go watch Pryor's freshman highlights, you'll see the same decision making as well as a significantly worse ball coming out of his hand).

Look at the improvement we saw from Tate from the Spring game (he was awful, no way around it) to the Rutgers game where he went 10/10. You act as if 39 pass attempts as a true freshman define the kid.

Maybe. I happen to fall for the, you win with people, moniker. And I stand by it.

I do default to loyalty to kids who pay their dues and are already part of the team over kids I just don't know about it.

But I'm willing to give Fields the benefit of the doubt and the only true way to gauge this is through competition. Tate should be open to this.

Or ....wait for it.... Haskins stays, Fields does not get his immediate release and has to sit out a year. Bum Bum Bum .....what then?

...or Haskins leaves, Tate transfers, and Fields doesn't get his immediate release...womp womp

If Fields has to sit out a year Tate will start, why would he transfer? Unless Baldwin beats him out. As for 2020 THAT will be interesting.

Do you know what this means?  Fields’ transfer gives OSU the top 2018 recruiting class, retroactively, over UGA - hooray for recruiting stars!!!

HS

I'm sure ESPN would go back and retroactively drop Fields' rank 10 spots.

PS - I just wanted to take proper advantage of the widely accepted tenet that stars really do matter when we win.

If Tate were to transfer, can he claim that someone called him a short shit and that he now suffers from the short man syndrome so he should be granted immediate eligibility?

HS
ELJTSA76's picture

You’re getting the hang of this!

of course, he could also graduate, and be eligible immediately under the current rules. But there’s no drama in that.

So, you are saying Field's made it up now? That is low. You could argue he is possibly exploiting the incident, but are you in his head to know if it had no impact whatsoever on what he is doing or why?

If Martell had some sort of slur uttered to him and he did not not like the environment he could do the same.

HS
martin anderson's picture

Where did I say or even insinuate he made this up? I fully believe it happened. The incident happened 2-3 months ago. He's just using this reason as a way to avoid the transfer rule of sitting out a year. If this slur was so devastating to him why didn't he seek an immediate release from UGA? His sister must have also been offended, so much so she decided to sign an LOI to play softball @ UGA a month after this incident occurred

Mgopooppants fans heads are exploding.   Last year when Patterson transferred they found every reason why his transfer was justified, now they are crying about Fields transfer.

If all holds true, it’s an absolute home run in every sense of the word.

mmm...not the baseball sense.

New Day for OSU. Same noon for TTUN.
