We are in for one helluva of a QB competition, and I frankly don’t care who wins the job as long as they can make the offense go.
Tate and Baldwin want to be the starter, and if Fields arrives, I would be disappointed if he didn’t want it just as bad.
Good! That’s the way it should be.
As I said in another post, I’d rather tame the tiger than kick the kitty.
Send the Earth Reverberating
You nailed it, Buck. I’d expound but I feel like this topic got beat to death in the article on Martell’s tweet from yesterday. One thing I think is hilarious is how Kevin likes to use the “what do you expect him to say?” line as though there were no other options but this unrealistic remark about how Martell would just roll over. There is the option of not saying anything and just showing what he can do on the field. Anyway, I digress. Happy Monday!
The word “folks” is typically used no fewer than twice per article. It could be used as some sort of drinking game, except I don’t play games when I drink alone at 5am.
"Now every morning just before breakfast
I don't want no coffee or tea
Just me and good buddy Wiser
That's all I ever need
'Cause I drink alone, yeah
With nobody else
Yeah, you know when I drink alone
I prefer to be by myself"
Despite the high cost of living, it still remains popular.
He must not know how to cover Diddley.
Our people are everywhere, Esto Dignus.
Sorry, Grateful, but that’s about as good as I’ve heard the Dead sound, thanks to the tunefulness provided by Bo Didley. The only guy in that band who was tuneful was Pigpen. That’s why their best live number was Turn on Your Lovelight in the early 70s and best studio single was Operator.
Did Grateful drown some kittens and so now people are DVing him whenever they get the chance? Or does everyone just really hate the Grateful Dead and/or Bo Diddley?
I understand that the Dead are not everyone's cup of tea, but why the hell would this get knocked? If you don't like it, move on. No need to throw out a -1
“The best executive is the one who has sense enough to pick good men to do what he wants done, and self-restraint enough to keep from meddling with them while they do it.” – Theodore Roosevelt
I didn’t DV Grateful, fellas. I’d did a playful critique of the GD. Look at how many DVs I’ve given out in 8 years . . .
It's a great word!
How about he could say: " I welcome the competition. The battle waged with Dwayne made us both vastly better quarterbacks. I look forward to learning and growing in the system even more this spring. Go Bucks!"
What he said was perfect because as of when he said if, Fields is not on the roster. He shouldn’t have to make excuses for things that haven’t happened.
With all that being said, I hope if the Fields transfer happens, it doesn’t create a divide and animosity on the team.
This Fields thing reminds me of the pivotal scene in “Miracle” where several of the players are complaining to Herb Brooks (Kurt Russell) because he’s brought in hotshot Tim Haren so late in the roster selection process. After telling him it’s not fair because “we’re a family,” Herb coyly smiles and says, “boys, we’re going to use Timmy Haren because he can make us better and then we’re going to send him home.” Good for Tate for throwing down the gauntlet. It’s smart for him to want to discourage Fields from coming to Ohio State and taking his job away.
"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." - Edmund Burke
I agreed with you until I got to the “his job” part. I am a big Tate suporter and do hope he earns the job, even if Fields transfers. However, the key word is earns. The best player, in every position, should play. If that is Fields, so be it. OSU is not a union shop, seniority over quality is not a recipe for success.
You’re misinterpreting my point and twisting it out of context. I purposely said “his job” in deference to Martell’s mindset—he sees it as “his job” and he’s not planning to give it up without a fight. Hard not to respect that mentality.
If Fields shows up, that's fine. But I have no problem with Martell taking the reins.
I'm not around that much, running exhausted and lost...
I have no problem with Tate.
And I think the way we "used" him the last couple of games, bringing him in like a Randle-El in obvious running situations, and not allowing him to throw, has skewed the perception of his talent.
Go back to Tulane (?) or whatever game that was where he was 10 for 10 passing. And then go back to his HS career if you think he doesn't know how to win.
Ego in a QB? Damn, that's a requirement of the job!
That's true, but if there's one thing Tate Martell has never been, it's quiet. His comments were extremely Tate, and I'm more than fine with them, given the situation.
Thanks for the reply Kevin. I like the players to be team players and keep the Twittering to a humble minimum. Not a big fan of taking shots at potential future teammates. Don’t know what good that will do. Martell has not proven anything yet. Prove it in practice and on the field not on Twitter.
GO BUCKS!!! Beat Washington!!!!
They should still use that bulliten board material. It’s what Washington people believe. Good motivator for defense.
I am quite excited for the game. The team picture in front of the Rose Bowl is priceless.
The dark shadow in the picture is pretty funny. Can’t hardly see the guys in the middle right. “Mr. Davis I need you to move a little to your left, further, perfect. Now you’re out of the sun.”
"I do not feel like there was an overwhelming difference in terms of talent," Kelly said. "If we coached better and we made plays that we have been making all year, we would have had a pretty good darn football game going into the fourth quarter.
Ohio State and Purdue.
Give back your Coach of the Year award!
ND football is a joke!!!! and remember haters, Bucks are 4-0 v ND since 1937.
Ohio State and Purdue.
Exactly...sometimes games get out of hand for reasons other than superior talent..at least for 364 other days of the year.
I am certain in my own mind that OSU was better than the 30-0 score vs. Clemson and wonder 'what if' they converted on any amount of points in those 2 missed fg's early...how the game would have changed.
I don't like Kelley or ND..but can't fault him on his take, even if I disagree.
Listening to the narrative...you would think Ohio State only played one game.
Yep, plus what is the coach going to say, we sucked and I don't think we have the talent to win that game?
Happy New Year’s Eve to my fellow 11w’s. Enjoy responsibly and Go Bucks!
Class of 2001 - classless since then.
I missed that Tweet (the second one). Laughing my ass off. Lets be honest, most of us would be getting pissed off if people were just writing us off, and frankly, I have very little chill before my Vyvanse kicks in
Have you ever seen a fierce animal who you were sure wouldn't bite? Because I haven't.
That quote is obviously fake. You don’t have to watch a LOT of tape from the Purdue game to realize OSUs defensive weaknesses. Throw to Anyone covered by Sheffield or Arnette, automatic catch or PI, simple.
Excuse me, but I thought anything by Bleacher Report was fake.
"Age wrinkles the body, quitting wrinkles the soul" Woody Hayes
Tate is sure getting a lot of air time lately and he hasn't played much.
"I do not feel like there was an overwhelming difference in terms of talent," Kelly said. "If we coached better and we made plays that we have been making all year, we would have had a pretty good darn football game going into the fourth quarter."
Not to be mistaken with, being in the state of...confusion.
Where that coach up north...never leaves.
Harbaugh's khakis are beginning to get a little hot in the seat.
I'm certainly not making excuses for Michigan but I'm positive that if we lost to Washington with 4 of our best players sitting out a lot of guys on here would be making excuses for us. For Christ's sakes a bunch of people on here made excuses for us and we just lost Bosa. You can't have it both ways
The State of Denial is adjacent to the States of Confusion and Insanity and all of them are within the Big Ten’s footprint.
I’m still irritated.
Browns hosed again by the refs.
True, but can we get a kicker?
I like martells line of thinking and the fact that he’s putting it out there and putting his name on it.
Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.
Absolutely love Landers! What a great young man. Thank You 67 for reminding us to whistle while you work!
"Three things can happen when you pass the ball, and two of them are bad." - Woody
A kid from Kansas graduating from high school and Harvard in the same month. Ridiculous to say the least, but props to him.
The qb room this spring-fall has a chance to be out of this world. Greatly looking forward to it.
I watched the Brian Kelly post game pressed, and what struck me was how un-Brian Kelly like he was. No tantrum, no tomato can head, no bulging neck veins, just measured clips of how close ND is and how the big plays were the only difference. Yeah, just like vs Bama in 2012. Play a real schedule and go through a conference championship game and get back to me.
Time for NYE, without college football which sucks. Enjoy it fellow 11W folks
"They say, "these geeks come a dime a dozen. I'm lookin' for the guy who's supplyin' the dimes." -Classy Freddie Blassie
Meh, I graduated from high school and college the same month. It was June. Six years apart. I remember them like they just happened yesterday and last week.
I didn’t watch the second half because it was over as soon as Clemson jumped up 23-3. Based on the part I watched, I was ready to defend Kelly, because ND’s defense - aside from being inexplainably unable to tackle Clemson’s beanpole of a QB - did hold their own until their best CB got injured and Clemson hit on the two big passing plays late in the 2Q.
So, I was going to say . . . when one team has major talent advantages over the other, they don’t usually have to do all their work in 4 or 5 big plays. But then I looked at the stats . . . And Clemson still outgained ND even if you subtract the 180 yards or so they got on those big play TDs. In other words, Clemson was both more explosive and more efficient than ND.
For the record, I would not have minded if Browning had made that comment. Confidence is part of the game. It's not like he would have guaranteed victory or anything …
"The minute we stop expecting greatness, we become Wisconsin."
Clearly, everyone’s thirsty for another “basic defense” motivational quote from an opposing player.
Don't drink and drive tonight. Stay safe and make smart decisions. That’s the same advice I’ve given my daughter since she was 16.
Didn't Mayfield say something similar before the game in Norman a few years ago? It didn't work out for him that night.
His back up said it.
No, it was the backup QB who's name no one remembers.
"We gotta go win this next game and make the State of Ohio proud!"-UFM
I do remember that whatever-his-name was from Ohio.
My aim, then, is to whip the Weasels, to humble their pride, to follow them to their inmost recesses, and make them fear and dread us. Fear is the beginning of wisdom. - William Tecumseh Sherman (with apologies)
From the article on longevity (paraphrasing) ‘what used to be strictly in the realm of sci-fi may now be approaching reality’
They didn’t actually read the Sci-Fi, did they? They never do. Specifically, what happens when you create a world full of nearly immortal senile buffoons? George, Hoarder of the 12th Ave McDonalds ballpit encountered Cornell the Juggler today. Both are in the ICU at Methodists as a result.
To me, Browning is one of the wierdest QBs to figure out in a long time. The kid has all the talent in the world, but you have no idea which QB is showing up. If he is on tomorrow, look out, he can sling it. We better scheme well!
Given how poorly the Buckeyes’ defense played as recently as the Maryland game, they have no room to take any QB lightly. Their mentality going into the game must be that they’re about to face an elite QB.
As fans, though, our mentality going into this game doesn’t matter . . . And so I can afford to say that almost all of the “good Browning” sightings happened in 2016. The only game this season since September in which he threw multiple TDs was against Oregon State.
If Ohio State can contain Miles Gaskin, Browning will have a tough afternoon. If Washigton is able to establish a strong running game, Browning will be successful as a game manager. I don’t see him turning back into 2016 Browning, though.
Living in Pac 12 country, I have seen a lot of Browning. Even die-hard UW and Pac12'ers now acknowledge that there is nothing to see here. He had the physical tools to be great, but looks like the problem is between the ears.
You are entitled to you own opinion, not your own facts.
Regarding Notre Dame, part of me says "Join a conference you arrogant, laurel-resting punks." However, with the likely hood of the CFP expanding to 8 teams I do not see that happening.
In Urban We Trust.
The CFP committee could make it happen. Tell the golden domers that only Power 5 teams get playoff berths...
Agree. If they go to eight, ND can remain independent and have a legit shot at one of the three at large berths every year. If they stay at four, ND has to play its way in through a conference championship, in my opinion.
The Browns are no longer the worst franchise in all of professional sport.
No need. ND got its usual once every 5 year present this year. ND wont be back in the playoff until 2023 for its next blowout.
We all know this year ND is about the 10th ranked team in the country. How is ND's best win over TTUN looking now?
Once every five years is pretty damn good.
About as good as ND being 0-4 v the Buckeyes since 1937.
This is just my personal opinion here, but to me, it almost sounds like Martell is kinda trying to create a rub between Fields and himself, almost like he's trying to get Fields to go somewhere else..anyone else get that vibe?
Tate's activity on Twitter will need a filter if he becomes OSU's starting QB.
I did learn this weekend that Tate is just as tall as Kyler Murray.
This is certainly plausible. I had that thought briefly, too.
I think the first and most important aspect is that Martell is tired of hearing he can’t throw and is only a running QB. There is no demonstrable evidence to this based on his HS history or his game play this year.
A good portion of our fan base assumes this because they see Tate’s shifty running ability and his read/option performance. He’s a QB more in the mold of Braxton and JTB. The people who are tired of the QB running 15-20 times per game created this narrative that’s Tate can’t throw.
Add to that Dwayne’s generational arm talent and the fact that Justin Fields is a freak of nature athletically with apparent passing ability similar to Dwayne. Easy to see why a portion of the fan base is overreacting negatively to the prospect of Tate starting.
His best point and one the coaches and QBs have made is tha there’s a lot more to being OSU’s QB than throwing. It’s an NFL system of checks and such, so much so that Haskins himself has said he wasn’t comfortable on the field (and there we hear again the reason why JTB was considered the best option at QB last year by the coaches). This offense isn’t easy to run, like say WVUs or Texas Tech or Washington’s State’s are.
My feeling is that Day is going to play the best QB and adapt the offense to their talent s (as he has said). I think he’s much more of an offensive guru than Urban, at least in terms of the current game. He’s less stubborn and more pragmatic. It’s possible that Tate could come in and make the whole offense more explosive next year just like Kyler Murray did after Baker Mayfield. No one knows what will happen. It’s a new Day & I am excited to see it unfold.
You win with people.
And so forth...
9 Units Strong!
I love how the people writing about UM have to throw in a combined record against "rivals" just to get something in the win column. As if beating OSU and beating MSU are equal.
If the Huskie QB's comments are fake, and you guys know this, why is the Forum thread still going?
I didn’t care if his comments were fake or real. It’s no secret the Defense on the Ohio State team is its most obvious weakness at an almost generational level. Whatever was allegedly said was nothing worse than was posted for 13 weeks here.
It's never too early or too late to talk about the recent failures of Michigan football.
Go get'em Cal Poppy - we are behind you !!
It's not a rivalry .............. it's a wreckoning.
Even if they had mr. guarantee the win, the Gators would have hosed'um. (Pun intended.)
41-15. Embarrassing. Like. 62-39. Love. It.
This must be how hairball keeps his job, its his skunk weasel mentality.
*Just proves it fits in with their trustees...theyr all delusional.
**The Mirage appeared 'crystal clear' yesterday.
They overpaid for a good coach but one that can't beat their rival. He's yet to lead his team in big games and that seat is probably getting warm. Problem is, he's a Michigan man and if the experiment fails, who are they gonna get to replace him?
Whine-o-vich. At least his mirage has sum 'fire.'
+ hire the guarantee guy.
No joking, keep the joke up north...croking.
Les Miles. scUM Coach in waiting out in Kansas.
Round on the ends and "HI" in the middle. O-HI-O.
I like Martell's l moxy. The better he and Baldwin, and possibly Fields, are in the QB competition, the better Ohio State will be next season.
Look, anyone who can look back at that game and attempt to explain that those teams were actually equal in terms of talent is either lying or delusional. Kelly might be both.
Comments like these are funny to me. If Brian Kelly had said,"We got smoked because my kids aren't nearly as good as Swinney's kids," then you would have called him an asshole for throwing his players under the bus (which would have been true). Instead, Kelly says that his kids are just as good as the other guy's kids, and that if he had done a better job coaching the game would have been close heading into the fourth quarter. I'm not a Brian Kelly fan, but what would you like him to say?
2-6 vs rivals MSU & OSU
This pisses me off every time I see it. Harbaugh is 0-4 Vs Ohio State... don't lump the Buckeyes in with Dantonio's two game failure.
When I die, sprinkle my ashes over the 70's
So true. Didn't he catch crap for commenting on his players a few years ago? No matter what he says, his response will be shredded apart.
My beef was less with him saying the teams were equally talented and more with him implying that they got boat raced because they lost one player for part of the game. Clemson was clearly the better team on both sides of the ball, and he's acting like it would have been a different game if Julian Love played throughout.
It is much better for him to try to shoulder the blame himself like this, but still, there's a difference in throwing your players under the bus and admitting that you weren't the better team in the game, which was clear. "We just didn't execute" or "they were more prepared" is always code for that.
This just in: sounds like Steve Alford is out at UCLA.
Wouldn’t surprise me. I was shocked at their lack of talent in our game with them. I was more impressed with Bucknell than I was UCLA to be honest.
worst case scenario, they have a sweet backup quarterback.
That's far from the worst case scenario. The worst case scenario is that you bring in Austin Grandstaff, Jr., with the super ego of Terrelle Owens, and expect him to be a team player when he's running with the twos.
I don't know why anyone doesn't see at least the possibility that he's running away from Georgia solely because he didn't beat out Fromm, because that it a very, very real possibility.
It's not like we don't have very well known instant gratification issues in America...

There would be a tinge if irony if Fields came to Ohio State to replace Dwayne Haskins, who bidded his time and learned for two years behind J.T. Barrett and now stands on the cusp of making millions after starting just 14 games. Patience is not a trait many players today seem to have.
I'm not saying Fields to Ohio State couldn't work, but it seems like people think overwhelming success, where everything works out perfectly, is a foregone conclusion.
People thought benching JT for Haskins would have been a perfectly smooth transition, and wouldn't have had any I'll effects on the team.
The only trouble is, people don't work that way. Guys have friends; loyalties exist, and people do care about relationships they've built working their way up with their guy next to them. These are all very real things.
That's fair, but I also feel like managing egos is part of coaching, specifically coaching quarterbacks. And from how he and his quarterbacks talk, that's something Ryan Day's good at. And it's not just Fields, I assure you, Tate Martell's ego is not easy to handle all the time either. I'm sure Dwayne Haskins wasn't always cool with not getting his shot. You're right, none of this happens in a vacuum, but this is the stuff you deal with when you recruit elite players, and I don't think he would be doing this if he wasn't positive it would help this team.
Agree with all that, Kevin. And, I do think that Haskins and Martell each have egos that could be challenging to deal with. Good food for thought - Happy New Year!
ND played themselves out of ANY consideration for future Playoffs. Maybe the price was worth it to pay. But I LOVE the fact that ERRBODY thinks that it was GEORGIA that got snubbed in this whole debacle. WHA!? GEORGIA! Who’d they beat again? Nobody. Florida? Who cares. UK? Really? A basketball school? Wow. Sad!
Well, UGA beat Florida, which beat the shit out of Michigan. They beat seven bowl teams to Ohio State’s six. They also lost by only seven to the prohibitive national champions, the only game Alabama played prior to Oklahoma that it didn’t win by at least three touchdowns. And they absolutely, positively didn’t shit the bed by losing by 29 points to a 6-7 team that got obliterated in a bowl game by 49 points to Auburn, which UGA beat handily by 17.
O.k...just stick with the facts then why don't ya.
(no italics needed)
You've mastered the art of "transitive property." Congratulations. It sounds just like my Marshall friends when they explain who beat who or lost to whom by less so they're better than this team or that team. Georgia had TWO LOSSES, in both games they showed massive holes in their teams. LSU curb stomped them with our backup QB. Smart is not a very good coach and will likely be gone within the next couple seasons. The Bulldog faithful aren't going to put up with another amiable dunce at coach like they did Richt for many years. Florida and Kentucky* were their only legit, resumed wins. And again, I maintain that if you're counting KY as a "quality win," then God Bless you. So FLORIDA. Georgia ALSO played the "juggernauts" like AUSTIN PEAY, Middle Tennessee, and UMASS! That's THREE OOC CUPCAKES!! OH, but PURDUE!!! Gimme a break, dude. How do they even justify this bullshit with a straight face?? OH BUT PURDUE!! Can you even IMAGINE if OSU played those teams?
Why so smug, nut? You do know that our curb stomping at the hands of Clemson exactly two years ago may have had the same impact at keeping us out of last year's playoffs as the debacle at Iowa -- although nobody talks about it. I realize ND did not have to play a conference championship game and they, in afterthought, had a soft schedule this year. But our fanbase has been taking a lot of shots at ND....a team who suffered the same ass stomping to the same team we did not too long ago. Trust me, nobody wanted us in last year's cf playoff -- and used the Iowa loss as a convenient excuse. After two cf playoff curb stomping in a row (Sparty and us) the Committee was not in a mood to do the Big Ten any favors. We'll see what happens next year.
The powers to be, including the media, have already penciled in Bama and Clemson. The other 2 spots are up for grabs. Simple as that.
Did Clemson’ 24-6 ass kicking by Alabama last year hurt their playoff hopes this season? No. They were completely outmatched. Yet here are Buckeye fans like you bringing our loss to Clemson two years ago like it matters. That OSU was legit and two years ahead of schedule. Clemson with Watson was much more experienced and on a mission. It’s not smugness, it’s confidence in our program and Meyer. We recruit as well as Alabama and have much better coaching. We weren’t supposed to beat Alabama in 2014 either and look what happened. Don’t buy into the BS ESPN/SEC narratives. They’re never gonna give OSU their due.
I could agree with much of your post, but when you say “we recruit as well and coach better than Alabama” then you lose me. We may coach and recruit on par or nearly on par with them but not better than to any degree.
If ND is this bad when they are undefeated, maybe they need to be looked at as a non power five team, and only get compared to teams with TWO losses the next time they run through their pathetic schedule without a loss.
The goldless homers just continue to prove why they don't belong. Why would any conference want them to join other than the $ their confused fan base might bring.
You are out of your mind if you think for one minute the B1G wouldn't kill to add ND.
Only...in place of the twerps, rusty knights, or husk-r's...but it didn't happen.
Again, for the green-backs.
The fish folks will never join the B1G.
"Fish folks"? Nice 1940's phrase there, House. And no, I am not Catholic.
Not sure how you place this phrase in the 40's, but I attended parochial school in the early 60's and was taught as a good Catholic was supposed to eat only fish on Friday. As a child I often heard, 'you fish people/folk' etc. It could be taken as critical sarcasm, but I didn't intend it to be. And no you didn't say I did.
I think Tate would be better served just being quiet and stay the course. I think I’ve heard enough about how good you are. Show us next year.
Next year will be quite interesting, to say the least! The Tate Train will be in full force with an offense minded coach at the helm! Unleash the Tate!!! The kid has off the chart potential and it is going to be fun watching him break defensive player's ankles on runs and tossing dimes in the air all season long!
Tomorrow night (the game comes on at 11pm Malta time) will be a mixed feeling kinda game... I HATE seeing Urban leave the sidelines after the Rose Bowl game! He has been so great for the university, the football program, and to all of the kids that played! I thoroughly expect them to go out and lay waste to the Huskies in a proper send off!!!
Let's go Buckeyes
The best thing about Pastafarianism? It is not only acceptable, but advisable, to be heavily sauced
Welcome to Real Life Wednesdays (or any other day of the week) because this is how the world works - or at least the world of capitalism. Even if Tate never makes it to the NFL, the business world is always looking to improve. Whether its the younger professional with advanced degrees/tech skills or the proven employee already on staff, there will always be somebody looking to take your job. So choose your words and actions wisely because you never know who is going to be your boss !! (or peer).
