Kendall Sheffield Pleased With Progress At Ohio State, Undecided On NFL

I really believe that he needs one more year. Raw athleticism notwithstanding, his play and one on one cover skills were too inconsistent to play effectively in the NFL.

Shhhh! Don't listen to him Kendall, go ahead and test those waters!  (I'm only sort of being sarcastic. I think we would be better by subtraction if he left)

arnette on the other hand.... pls gtfo

We were saying these things about him last year. I think it's pretty clear who both of them are by this point, and if there's one player on defense who gets beat as reliably as Jahsen Wint did at safety it's Sheffield. He was basically the reason we didn't beat TTUN by a few more touchdowns than we did. Measurables are nice, but its all about recognition and he is forever a beat slow - meaning his speed counts for nothing. Plus, when has he ever ball-hawked an interception or laid the wood on somebody? All he brings is speed, Arnette can do it all.

He looks like an "action figure."
And fast?
In Feb 2018, he broke the record for the 60-yard dash at 6.66 seconds.

How many times have we seen that speed run down someone on the edge? Or how about while he's running away from everyone on a pick-6? Definition of a track star with no ball skills.

Example 1, 2, 3, 4, 5

I could go on and on if I had more time.

Players can develop a lot from one year until the next even if they are 2 year starters. These are still kids becoming grown ass men. He has a chance to develope into a first round pick if he sticks around.

Third or fourth rounder at best. He has all the tools, but has struggled at time this year.

HS
NHBuckeye's picture

Round 3-4 seems about right.  He should go get that money if that's the draft grade he gets.  One more year in Columbus is not going to elevate him to a 1st or 2nd rounder.  Plus, he runs the risk of Okudah and Wade both moving ahead of him on the depth chart.

Sheffield has the size, speed, and athleticism and fluidity to be a 1st round pick. The issue is technique and a cover skill set. He has part of that but is very inconsistent.

The lack of size, speed or athleticism is a major reason why many CBs don't become first round picks. His ceiling is high because of his athleticism. If he got better in terms of technique and fundamentals, he could be a 1st round pick or raise his stock from the 4-5 range to 2-3. He has a lot to gain by staying another year

HS
iowabuckeyes's picture

Yeah, this is pretty much where I net out. I am a big CFB fan and rarely watch the NFL but when I do, I often wonder who a lot of the pro players are as I don't recognize their names from college. So either I'm not as big a CFB as I think I am (likely) and/or the NFL is pretty good at developing raw athleticism (extremely likely), i.e., recognizing a player's potential--which is another word for saying you haven't done anything yet--and developing it far beyond what college coaches are capable of doing. The talent on pro rosters also helps--watching and learning your craft from the best--and not being lazy or complacent or just trying to get by on raw athleticism.

That said, Sheffield's a long way from Washington's Byron Murphy, UGA's DeAndre Baker, LSU's Greedy Williams or Florida's CJ Henderson, who was "only" second-team All-SEC but who I thought was outstanding against Michigan (a common opponent for measuring Sheffield). Preseason, Walter Football projected Sheffield as a 2-3 round pick but I wouldn't say he played like that. Personally, I think he'd benefit from another year.

Wow, are you NUTZ?!

You do realize that the ONLY significant difference between a 1st round draftee and the last guy taken in the draft is the signing bonus right?  The Salaries are in STONE.  A guy taken last in the first round is getting was 23 million dollars than the #1 pick.  The average length career is under 4 years so the odds of getting the second contract aren't very good.

If you are tabbed as a mid 3rd rounder you're not getting millions you're getting a very small signing bonus, none of it guaranteed in the contract.  The idea that He can't get better and elevate into the second round is absolutely, totally absurd.  Its not like he was a starter last season and you havent seen any improvement

I think unless youre getting a significant bonus and you have 2 years of eligibility youre dumb as a box of rocks to leave early

You WIN with people.

As they say you only need one team to fall in love with you to be a first rounder but IMHO it would be in his best interest to come back.

HS
BuckeyeFan150's picture

We’ve all complained about his play at times but he’s only 2 years into the program. His speed can’t be taught and his technique/preparation can always get better with time.

He will go 2/3 round if he declares this year. Next year could push him into the 1st if he stays, but also could hurt his stock if he gets hurt.

Go now, get on a good NFL team and possibly get a max deal after your rookie contract expires.

I think he will be more effective on the next level than he is at ohio state no matter where he gets picked. Had some awful calls against him as well as some circus catches.

he isn’t a star but speed goes somewhat far in nfl, brahs.

Problem he and Arnette have is that if they go this year they were starters, if they come back and we really change the defense, they may not be starting so even going in 3rd round this year may be their best bet and they both can move up during combine

HS
buckeyepastor's picture

Are you suggesting we might move to a defense that doesn’t require cover corners?  If they potentially may not start for OSU next fall, how the frick are they ready for the NFL?

I was suggesting the guys behind them like okudah wade banks are better and may start ahead of them hurting their draft stock, why would we ever move away from cover corners

He’s not ready, but it’s his decision. If he has the option to get paid to play, rather than to do it for free, I can’t fault him for going.

Why the downvotes? Am I wrong? It seems like every time him and Arnette are challenged downfield, they interfere or hold the receiver. There's no denying the kid has all the athletic ability in the world, he just isn't even close to ready to be playing on Sundays.

I don't downvote and don't really understand why people downvoted your comment, but I also don't understand why you need to go negative on a very talented young guy who needs to learn to trust his eyes and speed more and not grab the receiver. Its all part of the game.

Whatever decision he makes, I am proud of all these guys who compete at a place like the Ohio State University. I think we fans take for granted how hard it is for even incredibly talented individuals to become truly elite football players. I wish Kendall all the best!

IMO Kendall has improved in recent games but if he wants to be a first rounder, which I believe for him is attainable he needs another year. The difference in contract money could be generational for him and his family. Just my opinion.

He has things u cant teach and would be a steal in the 3-4 round. Some NFL team will develop him over a couple of years and he will play for 8-10 years with that speed

To be fair, Coombs leaving didn’t help either one. But it is what it is. I think he needs to stay and it wouldn’t take much to upgrade a round in the draft so it would like getting paid to stay.

Winner winner Chicken dinner. Coach Coombs was damned good and this year serious regression.
The young man could benefit from more development but the talent moving up is going to challenge for playing time.
Best of luck Buckeye. Hoping for the very best results. A great set of NFL coaches can further develop him as well.

HS
Steel City Buckeye's picture

That's a great way to look at it. The difference between getting drafted in the 1-3 round next year really would be like getting paid to play if he is a 4-6 round pick this year. I imagine its a couple million. This is the situation where I would recommend staying but I would still never blame a guy for going to get paid.

HS
ckennard22's picture

I really hope he goes pro. He was a liability this year. Any time there was a big play in the passing game, dude was always the one getting beat.

HS
IGotAWoody's picture

CB is one of the toughest positions to play. The WR has all the advantage, since they know what the DB doesn't know. That's why there is only a handful of elite CBs at each level of play.

Elite CBs don't get beat often, but still do on occasion. Great CBs get beat more often, but their overall play is still solid. I think that's where Sheffield is right now in his development. The question, as it is for every player, is has he peaked? Or is he still getting better?

HS
Buckeyejohn's picture

The ceiling for him is a slightly above average college corner. The ball skills will never be there so he really has to rely on his speed to be in position. The question is whether we are better turning to athletes who are inexperienced but have considerably higher ceilings.

I think him and Arnette should both leave. I don't think either of these guys are gonna gain anything from a fifth year. And with Okudah and Wade pushing them for playing time, it would be best for them to just leave. Sheffield will kill it at the combine anyway.

HS
HoosierBuck's picture

His speed is sometimes negated by his reaction time it seems to me. IF he can improve that part of his game, he could very well be an elite 1st rounder.  come back if that is his goal. jmho from watching every game he has played as a Buckeye.

HS
buckeyepastor's picture

Most of the talk about Sheff and Arnette being bonafide for NFL seems to be about following in the footsteps of other elite corners at OSU.  First round talent doesn’t come about via osmosis.  The others always named as justification for Sheff’s potential as an early entry person, guys like Conley and Ward, were lock-down corners who owned their quadrant of the field to show the NFL they were ready.  They didn’t inherit that.  They worked for it.  Arnette and Sheff can become those guys, but they aren’t there.  Whatever Coombs told them, he has been gone for a while.  I think Coombs would have chewed his butt off this year over all the PI calls he took.  The kid can do what he wants and I wish him well whatever he decides, but he is reading too much of glowing praise of himself and taking it too much to heart.

Sheffield has until Jan. 15 to make his call whether to leave or not

I heard Haskins say the 15th in an interview. Selfishly I hope Haskins wait's till the 15th because he would miss the window :)

Believe he and his fellow Buckeyes have until the 14th. NFL makes the list of players declaring early available on the 18th..

From NFL.com

Jan. 14 Deadline for college players who are underclassmen to apply for special eligibility. A list of underclassmen who have been approved for entry into the 2019 NFL Draft will be sent to clubs on Jan. 18.

Arnette and Sheffield should both go. Arnette’s tackling is a plus, but at this point I truly believe Wade and Okudah are better pure corners than them. Kendall and Damon more than likely won’t improve their stock that much if they stayed, it would just add another year of nitpicking.

If Fuller were to leave as well, I really would like to see a secondary of Wade, Okudah, White, and Proctor next season with Tyreke Johnson or Sevyn Banks competing for the nickel spot.

This is definitely where I parked my car.

HS

Agree. Both have shown a lot of bad film and that isn’t going away. Best to enter draft, blow away combine, and hope some team will spend a 3rd round pick on a developmental corner.

Sheffield and Arnette have not shown any improvement for the last 2 seasons. I'd like to see Okudah and Wade as corners for 2019. I don't see either Sheffield nor Arnette being high draft choices; however, I see a bright future for both as future referees. Both do a lot of animated incomplete hand signals after giving up completions.

Definitely not ready for NFL, hard seeing him make an NFL roster. If he came back, he may have a hard time holding his starting position. May have enough raw speed to get drafted in later rounds, but he has no natural instincts for the ball.

No one is harder on Ohio State players than our own fans. Reading the majority of these posts I wonder why any player would want to come to Ohio State. If you think these are bad you should read the ones about Michael Jordan after he was named a First Team All American. Apparently many of our fans know more about football then any coach, pundit or talent scout. I sincerely hope that our players do not read this web site due to the constant negativity toward a 12 and 1 team. With that being said, Let's Go Buckeyes!

I understand what you’re saying, but this isn’t an Ohio State propaganda site. It isn’t about only writing comments that paint the players or coaches in a positive light. If that was the case then all the content would be fluff with no real substance. This site is about the fans and respectfully discussing anything related to Ohio State athletics. That includes personnel and their strengths or weaknesses.

HS

Honestly, I think he should stay and switch to FS...Jordan Fuller is likely to go, imho with his consistency on the back end of the defense and especially in run support...but looking at Sheffield's game, he's a pretty sure tackler and has the size to help in run support and the speed to close...but his range with that kinda speed if he were allowed to roam as a center-fielder ala Malik Hooker would probably be a better fit... I couldn't imagine the D getting beat deep or even the long runs they've given up with not too many guys who would be able to outrun him.

You want guys in your whole secondary (and especially at safety) who say to themselves "that's my ball" every time it's in the air or "I know what's happening here" before the ball is even snapped. That is the antithesis of who Kendall Sheffield is. He goes with those statements about as well as oil goes with water. He doesn't have a crazy amount of responsibility (when compared to safety) already at CB, and he constantly isn't in the right place. That's a hard pass from me.

If everyone couldn't tell from my posts on this thread, Sheffield was the one guy this year who made me want to shoot myself each gameday. Wasn't the linebackers like everyone else, it was pretty much him very consistently. Incredibly frustrating to watch a guy with the athletic talent he possesses struggle to put it together for years now.
