Pick up your feet, turn your corners square! And DRIVE DRIVE DRIVE!!!
Hell yes! That's what I want to see in the quarterback. Own it.
You do you Tate!

Nothing needs to be added but a BOOM for the confidence he has in himself. Martell reminds me of Baker Mayfield and that kid isn’t too bad.
He has no need to as it will be his job to lose.
Good for him and good for us that we have a competitor like Martell. I would love Fields but I hope that if he comes he understands it is a competition
Perfectly stated, Wasme. Love the cajones on Martell and would also love to have Fields join the team. I have a feeling they would both make valuable contributions. Let whoever would give us the best chance to win, play.
Not only that, but I feel like everyone is just assuming he is going to get the hardship waiver, when that definitely isn't a sure thing.
Might be my favorite post in the history of this site. Brass Balls on Martell
Not only is it a competition, but it includes a pecking order and Fields doesn't have a pecker in the fray as yet!--Go Tate!!!
All progress has resulted from people who took unpopular positions. -Adlai Stevenson, governor, US ambassador
Damn there’s some strong words in tbere
I love this from Tate Martell. This is Baker Mayfield type competitiveness. I’m still holding out hope that Haskins will be the QB next season, but when Tate’s time comes I think he’ll shine.
He will blow it.
Fields is going to have to compete no matter where he goes. If Tate can beat him out...so be it. Tate is confident. Just don't want to lose the passing attack they had this year with Haskins. Don't want to go back to the days of QB being a glorified running back
Stay golden, Ponyboy.
Question. If Martell runs more, but the offense works to the same level (if not better) than this years attack, what would be the problem?
"Go out there, make plays, they'll remember your name forever. FOREVER!" - J.T. Barrett
Martell needs to run more than Haskins...that would be great..but it does not need to be at the level it was under Barrett. OSU needs to be able to continue to throw the ball at a good clip
A dual-threat QB that throws/runs 60%/40% of the time and does it well, is the ideal QB for the college game. That should come to about 25-30 throws and 10-15 runs. give or take. obviously, he needs to be able to do both at a close to elite level.
You'd have a recruiting problem... they are out there selling to these kids we are going to sling it.. Not a coincidence we set passing records and elite WRs are chomping at the bit to come to Ohio State...
You suddenly revert to JT and running the QB and it wouldn't sit well with the recruiting imo...
ok the thing is JT couldn't throw. actually, he showed he could throw it at times, but he tended to always lack confidence and second guess himself before making a throw. that's why you'd see all those pump fakes where as haskins just slings it with no hesitation. tate is oozing confidence. he can certainly run, but don't act like he can't throw
"I feel ready for whatever awaits me on the other side. I don’t fear adversity. I don’t fear the spotlight. I don’t fear success. And I don’t fear failure." - Braxton Miller
Being able to throw AND run is a thing. JT was just limited when it comes to arm talent/mechanics.
Yes reverting back to that style of offense would be a problem. That type of offense does not work against elite defenses. Running up the numbers against rutgers, indiana, michigan, etc. does not m ean anything when we're playing Clemson or Bama.
The reverse is also true. Nobody beats Bama without a running threat at QB.
Nobody beats Bama period.
I don't buy one goddam drop of gas in the state of Michigan!
I think the 2014 National Champions disagree.
I bleed scarlet...literally
Actually the last 3 games of 2014 agrees
it wouldn't be a problem. and also, it won't run better if the bucks go back to a barrett-style offense that has the qb running 20+ times a game.
31-0 is the problem.
Exactly right. Coach Day should work with Tate heavily to pass with tremendous timing, accuracy and efficiency. If Tate can run and pass equally we can be great. He should be passing 500 balls each day to become his best.
Still think Fields is a better option bc he's 6' 3" tall and heavier.
H back is a very possible landing spot though. Be your best and help us win.
H back pass play for a 70 yard touchdown ( 42 yards after catch) ... Yay !
If Tate can run and pass equally
This season, Tate Martell played in parts of 6 games, where he completed 23 of 28 passes (82%) with no picks for 269 yards total, and 1 TD, with a QB rating of 174.63. He also ran 22 times for 128 net yards. Roughly 45 ypg passing and 21 ypg rushing on 50 plays. Extrapolated to a game's worth that's about 300 yds passing and 60+ yards rushing (other players will also carry the ball).
Impressive, but these stats were achieved nearly entirely in blowout wins vs lesser competition, and are likely to be lower vs better competition. In comparison, Haskins completed 70% of his passes this year.
If Tate can complete 2/3 of his passes as a starter next year and average more than 4 yards per carry, he'll probably be the starter for 2019 (assuming Haskins leaves). To me, that's a big IF. Time will tell.
Our honor defend, so we'll fight to the end !
Rutgers....and Tulane. Not yet proven against real talented defenses.
It's a bit of a reach to use those stats in Tate's favor, but it's equally a reach to use them against him.
Sure, you can pile up some nice numbers against lesser competition, but not always, since usually you're coming in from the cold with lesser weapons and a severely pared down playbook. Even when Tate played relatively meaningful snaps, they were usually in predictable situations and he never played long enough to get in a groove.
For now, we all know the guy is as competitive as Hell, hates to lose, has never lost, and clearly can run (being really fast, smart, and evasive), especially in the open field, and by now, we should expect him to know the playbook inside out, on top of which, he's forged a great relationship with his teammates and Ryan Day, and vice versa.
What we don't know for sure is how he'll fare if he has to grind out short-yardage, but he certainly should fare better inthis area than Haskins, on top of which, IMHO, it wouldn't be the worst thing if we figured out a way to rely on our RBs a bit more than QBs in those situations.
That leaves passing as the question mark left, and just because Haskins has an all-time arm doesn't meant that Tate can't be a truly great passer in his own rite. It's not as if he struggles to sling the ball more than 50 yards or throw darts downfield or across the field. We just don't know how quickly he'll read and react to defenses yet on a college level against major competition, but then, nobody knows that until a guy plays.
In any case, none of knows that Martell can't be every bit as effective as Haskins 'overall" as a QB per the whole package of skills that he has to offer. Maybe. Maybe not. It's a tall order, and I might add, that exceptional standard might not be necessary to win a national championship.
Still, for what it's worth, again, we DO know that he's got a strong arm. We DO know that he has a history of being accurate. We also know that he'll be surrounded by a great O line (I anticipate a big upgrade in this area next year), terrific RBs, and a talented corps of WRs with a great work ethic and an extremely promising new position coach, not to mention a new head coach that apparently knows a thing or two about the running an offense and getting the most out of a QB.
We also have every reason to believe that Tate should be able to scramble out of the pocket and will probably drive defensive coordinators absolutely nuts with his ability to avoid rushers and then tuck the ball and run for big chunks.
Frankly, my biggest question about Tate has to do with his size and being able to take a beating for a whole year, but then, he's given every indication that he's a tough and resilient guy.
Personally, I expect big things from Ohio Tate, just as I likewise expect the offense he runs to look somewhat different than what we've seen from Braxton, JT, Cardale, or Haskins. If nothing else, nobody can complain that the Buckeyes don't give their fans something new and interesting to behold every year or so.
Well, that is, outside of the full century that Barrett played QB for Ohio State.
I'm with ya. An offense that relies on a running QB can get to the dance but ends up getting waxed by good defenses (see Clemson 2016). I have no doubt that OSU (with Haskins) would have gave Clemson and Alabama far better games and possibly even knocked them off. OSU with a running QB with limited passing ability would have gotten beat by 30.
Urban Meyer 4 Jim Harbaugh 0
depends on what you mean:
1. you personally like QBs who are passers first;
2. you just plain don't like Dual-Threat QBs (therefore, they are "QB being a glorified running back");
3. It's more important that the team wins, and if that means using a dual-threat QB, so be it; or
4. It's important the team wins, but doing so with a pass-first QB.
5. One or more of the above.
Anyone who thought Martell would not stay and compete don't know Tate. The kid is a baller and leader. OSU's offense will not skip a beat with Martell at the helm.
Go get um cuz......lite up the B1G next fall.
Love the fight from Tate.....
Haskins Sidenote..... Tampa Bay set to announce they are re-signing Winston and won't be taking a QB.. there's a REAL possibility there won't be a team in the top 10 that ( thinks it) needs a QB...
Giants and Jags both have top 10 picks though.
Jags rumors have them chasing Flacco.the Jags think this year was a blip. Sign Flacco or another game manager and they are back in the playoffs..... and LOTS of rumblings NY Giants think Eli has a year or two left and that one of the worst offensive lines in football is the problem..
Plus, unless there are coaching/management changes both Shurmur at the Giants and Coughlin running things for the Jags prefer dink and dunk type QBs...
Teams most in need of a QB are in the mid teens..
Teams posturing right now unwilling to reveal their cards. Trust me, one of the top ten teams will take a QB or a mid-round team will trade up. BTW, Jameis Winston is a piece of shit rapist that got a free pass from the media pretending like none of that ever happened.
@ silver. I had said Gruden will unload Carr and take Haskins. Could be Bucks go #1 and #2
"Three things can happen when you pass the ball, and two of them are bad." - Woody
No chance... They don't want payroll.. They traded back like a dozen times last year.. They are putting all of their marbles into the move to Vegas in 2020.. they want as much cap space as they can have to go free agent shopping in 2020...
That is the point Tcm, if they unload Carr they would be unloading tons of cap space! Serious question: Do you know how NFL contracts and cap space works? By trading Carr, they would get cap space plus picks! They would bring in Haskins or draft any other QB at rookie pay scale.
Carr is one year into a $125 million contract.
I've got no love for Winston... just reporting Tampa was one of the spots a QB could have gone in the first round and that appears to be off the table..
It's REALLY starting to look like it will take a Denver or Cincy trading up for a QB to go top 10.. and even Cincy isn;'t a lock.. same thing for Denver.. if Denver fires Joseph they'll be the team to beat... but if Joseph gets another year they may not go QB...
And don't forget.. all the momentum right now for the first QB off the board is Jones from Duke..
The crap thing for Haskins is he has to decide by Jan 14th.. He could decide to go and then just prior to the draft find out the Jags have signed Flacco and Giants have resigned Eli and then there really wouldn't be a team in the top 10 wanting a QB..
I've said it a 100 times... it;'s just an odd year because you have so many teams picking in the top 15 that don't need or just took a QB..
You're living in a fantasy world if you think the Giants are going to re-sign Eli.
LOL. You serious????? What fantasy land do you live in that ALL teams in the top 10 DONT draft for the future? Riddle me this: Jags sign Flacco and Giants start Eli again next year, what would their future be without drafting a QB?
Look at most of the playoff teams and look up when they drafted their future QB. Spoiler alert: most of them were top 10 qbs that sat a year or were forced to start because of injury. That is why we do what we do, and they are highly paid GM's that have done it that way for years!
I don't think anybody in NY believes in Eli anymore--not for long--so they're either blowing smoke (maybe to throw other teams off the scent per their draft plans), or, even if they did think Eli 'might' have a little life left him, they'd still KNOW that they can't count on it.
The being the case, they KNOW that they'll need a plan for the future, i.e., draft a top QB... NOW.
Actually, since Eli is a pocket passer, he'd be the perfect QB to take Haskins under his wing, or at least ensure that NY doesn't have to change their whole offensive scheme if they draft Haskins. In short, I'd be surprised if the Giants don't draft him... IF he's available. And if they don't, he won't last long--not with the limited QB options available this year.
I'm guessing Giants fans are salivating at the prospect of an arm Haskins joining up with the legs that Saquon Barkley has to offer. Plus, overnight, they'd steal any thunder that the crosstown team has earned in the Big Apple per drafting its hotshot young gun, i.e., Sam Darnold.
That is why there are trades for draft pics.
Well since the NFL draft never features trades I guess Haskins will go undrafted FOH.
Would love to pick up Fields, but he better be ready to spend at least one year learning the system. Probably two.
Suddenly the subtweets make perfect sense.
I feel like this little interview was directed more towards Buckeye Nation. Dudes been reading the tweets, and he’s sick of it. We heard about Fields possibly transferring and starting crowning him as the new face of the Buckeyes (not here, on other sites). I like the confidence and I can’t wait to see this kid ball in 2019.
Let's be honest there was a lot of it here too. All I will say is we aren't Michigan, if someone isn't good enough at Georgia why would they be good enough here?
Never bet against someone that competitive.

Love the competitive spirit.
"You win with people" — Woody Hayes
I like this young man named Tate Martell.
"If you're not changing, you're falling behind."
Wow... so he throws down the gauntlet. Love it, but I hope he is welcoming if Fields joins because dont need lockerroom drama. I'm done with drama after this year.
"I don't apologize for anything. When I make a mistake, I take the blame and go on from there." - Woody Hayes
If it is Tate...OSU will be fine
If it is Baldwin...OSU will be fine
If it is Fields...OSU will be fine
It is all about the defense.
you forgot one :)
If it is Haskins...OSU will be fine
I will rejoice if he does. Just not sure he can turn down first round...maybe top 8 money
Especially since he'll have a lot more competition for the top QB spot in next year's class (Herbert, Fromm, Tagovailoa) and he's the top one by a longshot in this class.
When I walked in this morning and saw the flag was at half mast I thought, "Alright, another bureaucrat ate it." but then I saw it was Li'l Sebastian. Half mast is too high. Show some damn respect.
Top potential by a long shot... in terms of being ready he's probably 3rd or 4th... Jones at Duke much more polished and ready, same for Luck and Grier... they don;'t have the ceilings/potential though but they wouldn't be learning on the job.,..
While rooting for fields to come, that’s a baller comment by Martell. I’ll be rooting for him to be the man ready to step up.
He must of been told the zone read is coming back. It may but I don't believe it because of the wide receivers coming in and the rest in the barn are more Pro Style qb's. Why on earth would we revert back to the zone read? I will say I loved it when we recruited Martell I was very excited. On the other hand watching McSorely and other qb's that are not tall I am now on the fence about him. I have seen way to many tipped passes and batted passes this season and Bowl games with the short qb's. The lineman have gotten taller with longer arms. I watched the Oklahoma game last night and he had to double clutch a couple times and had a couple tipped and nearly intercepted. Imagine being 5/10 throwing a pass over a player even at 6/3 with long arms plus they can jump. Good luck at 3rd and short throwing a crossing pattern to a wide open receiver that's batted or tipped end of drive. Burrows thought he was going to win the job too
Baker Mayfield, who was 6'0" at the senior bowl and then miraculously grew an inch when the Browns drafted him, doesn't have an issue... nor does Kyler Murray, Drew Brees, or Russell Wilson. I saw Adam Schefter say this morning that many NFL teams are 'enamored' with Kyler Murray despite his looming baseball career, and that a team will draft him based on his talent alone. Martell is bigger than Murray, who was said to be 5'9" during the Heisman insanity show. Tate Martell can ball... he proved it in high school Vs the very best national competition, and he's one confident alpha dog... and that's what you want in a quarterback. May the best man win the job, but dismissing Martell due to height, imo, would be a mistake.
When I die, sprinkle my ashes over the 70's
I agree, Kmp. I think Day will find creative ways to find lanes for Tate and get him into space, on top of which, I think Tate will find lanes on his own, regardless of the play that's called--much like Murray.
Mind you, I'm not saying he'll be a Murray clone, and it wouldn't be fair to put him in the same category as a Heisman Trophy winner just yet, but I do suspect that he's going to bring a bit of Murray's element to his game, as well as a bit of Baker Mayfield or Drew Brees.
In the end, he's his own guy with his own skill set, and he'll have to prove his limitations (or lack thereof) out on the field. But for now, he sure has the attitude and history of a winner. We just need to see him do it.
Meanwhile, hey, I won't cry if I see Fields on the 2019 or 2020 roster, too, or on the field. May the best man win, or... may both of them win-win for the Buckeyes.
We did QB runs and read this year at times. We probably would have done it more if our run blocking didn't suck ass.
But I don't want to go back to the zone read! Lol
Tate ain’t playin y’all. He’s going to put up Kyler Murray numbers.
Wait, but how could he put up Kyler Murray numbers if he’s not playing? JK!
Would love to see our QB in contention for the Heisman next year regardless if it’s Haskins, Tate, Baldwin, Fields, or Chugunov.
They're all chickens. The rooster has sex with all of them.
QBGeddon III is nigh.
I want a fall Saturday in Ohio Stadium..
Impossible not to respect Tate's fighting spirit highly.
"The minute we stop expecting greatness, we become Wisconsin."
I know people here won't like this, but to me Tate is very similar to Baker Mayfield in all the right ways.
What's there not to like (other than the whole trying to put a hole in artificial turf thing)?
At least you're not comparing him to Ben Roethlisberger ... ugh. :)
The will to win is not as important as the will to prepare to win. -- Woody Hayes
If he has Baker’s accuracy, I’m all for it.
This is definitely where I parked my car.
I like Tate...Tate for Heisman...Go Tate...Go Heisman...Go Bucks
I AM SO FIRED UP RIGHT NOW GUYS.
I usually find CAPS annoying but somehow this made me smile.
Bold statement. A big fan of Tate, but for his own potential benefit I don't think he should shut the transfer door just yet.
TATE MARTELL IS BAKER MAYFIELD 2.0!!!!! HE IS NOT JUST A RUNNER THE DUDE CAN PASS!!!! HE IS NO DOWNGRADE FROM HASKINS AND EVEN I KNOW HASKINS WAS THE GREATEST QB IN TOSU HISTORY!!!!! HE BETTER BE OUR STARTER NEXT YEAR!!!!!!!!!
Don't really think Tate is like Baker at all. Baker wasn't a runner in college, although he could run occasionally if it was called for. The correct comparison is probably the one that was made for years and that is Johnny Manziel. A dual threat who can run for 800-1000 yards and sling it also. I don't think Tate is quite as athletic as Kyler Murray but that would obviously be the high end of the spectrum as well for what you'd hope Tate could do. Baker was always more of a Brees type.
Even if Fields comes, I hope Tate wins the starting job. I think people forget that he was the 2nd ranked dual threat QB in his class and a top 100 recruit. I think his patience will be rewarded. In a perfect world, Fields would transfer in and, regardless of whether Fields is able to play next year, he would wait a year behind Martell. Not sure if he'd be willing to wait two years, but I want to see Tate get his shot. I don't think it would be like 2017 where there was no creativity and the Buckeyes leaned heavily on the zone read. I think the zone read would be just one of the concepts used to fit Tate's talent as a runner (as well as a passer). But then again, I'm just a fan and have never been paid to evaluate QBs, so what do I know.
"It's not that I'm so smart, it's just that I stay with problems longer." - Albert Einstein
Correct. It’s not an all or none proposal. We NEED a Qb to be a threat to run. Should we do it exclusively like we did with JT? No. Should we run it 5-10 times per game? For sure
He’a definitely going to play...in the fourth quarter after Fields and the 1s are taken out.
"The height of human desire is what wins, whether it's on Normandy Beach or in Ohio Stadium." - Woody Hayes
No sir. He’s going to win the job....and a TON of games after that.
No idea why people are so convinced that Fields will start.
Tate played QB in essentially 3 games this year, mop up duty vs Tulane, Rutgers and Oregon St... though he saw time in 6. His last 3 appearances... Sparty, MD and Mich... he attempted zero passes.
Justin played in 12 games, but like Tate the majority of his stats came from 3 games in mop-up duty... Austin Peay, Middle Tenn St and UMass.
Tate's competition seems a bit more robust than Fields' but it's close. Given Tate's limited exposure, I'd have to give him the edge, at least stat-wise... but it's very close:
Comp Att Yds TD % INT Long Att Yds TD Long
Tate Martell 23 28 269 1 82.1% 0 51 22 128 2 47
Justin Fields 27 39 328 4 69.2% 0 57 42 266 4 47
Fields would be an incredible addition to our lineup, and I sure hope he pulls the trigger for the good guys.
But to rule out Tate, his 2 years experience with the program, his brothers and teammates, and his coaches... well, it's just ludicrous.
Tate's a winner. He can throw, he can run, and he can lead. Can't wait to see him play.
"The future is bright at Ohio State." - Urban Meyer 1/1/15
Fields ran more and TM had a higher completion %
no more zone read, ugh it's easy to scheme against. We need a quarterback who can pass. Tate in high school was a career 55 percent passer. That is not good enough. We don't need a running back at quarterback.
Switch to receiver Tate, if you have any aspirations of the NFL, go the Julian Edleman route
Successful people do what they have to, whether they feel like it or not
Zone read is a good wrinkle to add in but it can't be the focal point. Fields would be perfect, he can throw but he's also athletic and capable of running zone read.
"The hate of men will pass, and dictators die, and the power they took from the people will return to the people. And so long as men die, liberty will never perish" - Charlie Chaplin
Based on what? Recruiting rankings...
22 Saturdays till kickoff
You're wrong. Martell completed over 60% of his passes during his BG career and was a 63% passer as a senior. I agree Ohio State needs a QB who can sling it... but we clearly disagree about whether or not that could be Martell.
ok 247 sports lied to me about his passing percentage. Looked at Max Preps. So while he completed 60 percent, Justin Fields completed 66 percent. I just feel Fields is a better option
Fair enough... and Fields very well could be the better option, but I believe Martell is as of right now. We'll see...
So we agree to disagree. That's fair, hey if Martell ends up being the right choice I will eat my crow with a glass of cold milk like a man
This is great and all, but if Fields comes to Ohio State, you can bet the rent that he’s gonna start (so long as he is cleared, of course). Not saying I don’t like Martell (because I do), but Fields would fit Day’s offense much better, and he’s just simply a more talented QB.
Suddenly everyone is pro Tate. I've been saying this, kid will be the starter next year. Hes not.goimg to lose down to anyone. As for being welcoming, there's a difference between friendly and friends
He might win the job vs Baldwin but I do not think he beats out Fields.
No way he beats out Justin Fields. It’s crazy to deny Fields’ talent and yet so many seem to be doing just that. This is Ohio State. We recruit the best of the best of the best. If we ever stop doing that, we will fall.
And yet he washed out at Georgia...
I understand Justin Fields was an elite recruit, but what has he done on Saturdays that makes people so confident he would beat out Martell? I don't get it. Recruiting rankings? Height? Garbage time stats? Martell was ranked #56 nationally, a fairly high ranked 4 star. The most recent Heisman winner is 5'10 tops.
I say this every year when these type of discussions come up...I just the best player to win the job. I don't care at all if it is Martell, Fields, Baldwin or a walk on. I have no favorite and I have never met or seen any practices. I have no clue who is better, and neither do 95% of the fan base.
People get these ideas in their head and attached to recruits. I see it with Jack Miller. People already talking about how OSU is set at QB in 2022 blah blah blah. Emory Jones and Danny Clark ring a bell.
Just let the shit play out...whether it be Zwick vs Smith or JT vs Cardale or Haskins vs Burrow or next years race...why waste time trying to predict the future?
Cdub, I’m with you in your second paragraph. Let the best players play. Of course I loved Urban but I don’t think that always happened under him and I believe it may have cost us at points. Regarding your reservations of Fields, I would play devils advocate and ask you what has Martell done to make everyone believe he’s going to be so great? If it applies to Fields, it applies to the rest of our QB room right now.
I'm pretty sure Cdub's point (because it's exactly what he wrote) is that none of us fans have seen enough of Martell or Fields or Baldwin or Chuganov to have the faintest idea of who should start next September. The Spring Game won't show us much, none of us have access to summer camp, film or weight rooms or fall practice to have a whit of the knowledge the staff will have to make their decision. Trying to make the decision today, on this board, is fool's work. A needless displacement of above body temperature vapors.
North until you smell it, west until you step in it
I understand Justin Fields was an elite recruit, but what has he done on Saturdays that makes people so confident he would beat out Martell? I don't get it. Recruiting rankings? Height? Garbage time stats?
WestSide, I read it as singling out Fields as you can see from the quote above. He then went on to list Martell’s credentials. If he would have stated it like you did, I wouldn’t have played Devils Advocate. You must have missed where I said I agreed with his second paragraph. Cheers.
Yeah, we waste a lot of energy taking sides and declaring our guy as the clear favorite.
I’d rather go the route where these are all my guys.
Go Buckeyes’ QB!
Whoever wins the competition is fine with me. This is Coach Day's team in 3 days, no longer Coach Meyer's. The fact we are even pursuing Fields shows perhaps a change in QB philosophy, but I trust they will put the best product on the field come next fall.
Attaboy! Congrats to him on confidence and a good decision. Hope he shows out in Spring ball and Camp.
Y’all thought QBGeddon of 2015 and 2018 was bad, just wait until this offseason if Fields transfers to OSU. Batten down the hatches.
I hear he sucks at Fortnite though...
Wahoo! Wahoo! Rip, Zip, Bazoo! I Yell. I Yell. For O.S.U.
I’m more than ready to jump on the Martell Express...hard to beat experience and confidence!!
Is it me or does a potential incoming transfer in OSU's case not make any sense? QB recruiting has been great and those guys chose Ohio State first. If Fields thinks he's going to come in and jump Martell and Baldwin on the DC he better be Haskins like, which I doubt he is.
Thank you Urban Meyer and Gene Smith
Fields is that good. Some fans are gonna feel pretty stupid if Fields goes somewhere else and lights it up.
If he's so great why was he a backup to a QB not quite in Haskins league?
Jake Fromm is going to be a first round draft pick next year...
He was he backup for the same reason Tua backed up Jalen Hurts at Bama. Seniority.
So he's running? Haskins waited his turn and it was worth it.
Kirok, I would wager there are factors at play beyond just whether the guy in front of him is better and when is he leaving.
I believe Fields is that good too. Number 2 talent last recruiting class. That's elite.
Spencer Rattler (sp?) is the numbet 1 pro style QB who is committed to Oklahoma. Fields had Oklahoma on his short list. Rattler was told by Lincoln Riley that he would be the only QB OK signs this season. Perhaps the odds have increased for the Buckeyes. We will see what happens.
I would love to see Fields join us and an awesome competition in the spring / summer.
Love to see this. Talk to me after spring ball and if Fields is here, though.
#TeamTate. Love this kid. He will be ready to go in 2019. He has paid his dues and has been patient to learn the system. I think he is going to a couple/few very good years at QB.
#Fighter. Love it.
Fields of Dreams
Good with me. Worse case scenario is we have Miller 2.0 as a back up. Worst case.
It is god to be a Buckeye.
This makes me want to pull for Baldwin to start. Tate has little man syndrome.
Choo choo Chugunov
I read where Chug is not expected to return.
You are rooting against a player who says he is not going to transfer and wants to compete?
Talent trumps trash talk.
Fields isn't even here yet. Also, Martell is talented too.
Right? I swear huge portions of this fanbase are slow. One player is here and has been for two years and these couch slugs are shitting on him for some guy that COULD NOT win the starting job at Georgia.
I belong to the school of not wanting to shit on either one of them bc one of them will likely be our starting QB next year and we should be rooting for the one that is going to give us the best chance to win it all.
Ladies and Gentlemen and Buckeye fans
We have a winner.
Being a big talker doesn’t make someone a winner. Win first, then talk.
Is he supposed to lay down and say "Fields will start over me"?
I lnow you've been declaring Justin Fields as the buckeye savior, but its time to stop putting down someone WHOS ALREADY A BUCKEYE in exchange for a transfer. Welcome Fields, but don't put your own down.
He’s not supposed to say anything. He hasn’t done anything. Win it, then spin it. Let your play do the talking. This isn’t Michigan.
It is great just to see a quality kid committed to being a Buckeye as well as his teammates.
I love Tate Martell. Whether Fields comes here or not, we’ll be in great hands at the QB position once Dwayne leaves.
Confidence is great, but I don't like hearing Martell claim he's elite or him downplaying what Fields could potentially bring. Just compete and let the coaches sort it out. Talk is cheap.
I think it will all come down to who is the best decision-maker with the ball. Who reads defenses the best and calls out protections. Who reads through the progressions in 3-5 seconds. Who is accurate.
Even if we have Martell and get Fields, we can't count out Baldwin.
"We get paid to score touchdowns, not kick field goals"
-- Urban Meyer
Pretty bold for a dude that's seen little playing time and proven nothing on the field. He's been a one play "package".
OH-IO living in SEC! SEC! Ville
Team Tate...assuming Haskins moves on of course.
"Toughness is a choice."
Tate will transfer. He’s just not transferring yet.
Love his confidence, but if Fields transfers and is granted hardship, there's no way he's sitting on the bench.
All Tate is doing is trying to intimidate Fields into not transferring here. These aren’t the words of a confident quarterback. It’s desperation.
Just went shoppin and talk is still cheap
Creds to Martell for sticking up but if Fields comes here it’s game over. For those spewing about how Martell is superior please put a sock in it
I trust Ryan Day to put the best QB on the field. Whatever that decision is, everyone must live with
*Message disapproved by Mark May*
You just contradicted yourself.
You claim to trust Ryan Day to put the best QB on the field, but yet you don't even want a competition to prove it? Or are you saying Fields is so good that Martell doesn't have a chance? If thats the case why did he not unseat Fromm if hes this world beater you're trying to claim?
Your talk is cheap, too. I expect Martell to win the job.
Neem, there could be many reasons why Fields didn’t start over Fromm and could be many more why he decided to transfer. We don’t know all the details. Imagine what an outsider could be thinking for why Haskins wasn’t able to start over JT last year? Recall Fromm had a full year as a starter over Fields and almost won the National Championship his first year out. Fromm will be a likely first round draft pick and has been solid. There may not have been a true freshman in the nation that could have started over him. Also, we know there was an incident of racism toward Justin that could have factored in. Again, we don’t know all the details. I expect the QB that will give us the best chance to succeed to win the job. If it’s Martell, I will be 100% rooting for him. If it’s Fields, Baldwin, or Chugunov, I will be 100% behind them. Just as I was 100% behind JT once he was named starter, even though I wanted to see Haskins get the nod. Cheers.
Love it!!!! Gonna be a heck of a spring game and 2019 season. National Champs!
Heck of a glorified powder puff game you mean? Have you never been to one?
oh never mind. Dumb question.
tate's all in and ready to take on any and all qb competition next spring considering all the pro-field stuff posted here that he's had to read since the story broke. day will put the best qb on the field.
Love the mindset. That confidence and determination feeds the team. Now go win the job, on the field and in the film room.
"I love football. I think it is the most wonderful game in the world and I despise to lose." WOODY HAYES
I like this guy. Hope he does well
"Luck is my middle name. Mind you, my first name is Bad."
Tate is saying all of the right things, and I hope he will stay regardless of what Haskins and Fields decide to do. I like his spirit, and I would not be surprised if he won the starter job even if fields transfers in and is cleared by the NCAA to play in 2019.
Me likey. Go on with your bad self Tate. Be curious to see what he actually does IF* he doesnt win the starting qb position next year. (* denotes a purely hypothetical construct of course)
Everyone forgets he was the #2 QB in his class behind Tua. I think this guy is going to be special. Would I love to have Fields for depth-sure-but he isn't starting at Ga for a reason..
Pigskins & Porkrinds
He was a true freshman behind a guy with a full year as a starter who nearly won it all. That’s quite a head start. I doubt there was a true freshman in the nation that could have overtaken Fromm, who will likely be drafted 1st round next year. Not an indictment on Fields that he didn’t win the job his first year out.
The guy is a total WINNER and will continue to win given the chance I love his attitude and winners mentally . " Tate the Great"
" we play to win the game "
Did anyone watch the Browns vs Ravens today?
A short, scrambling QB in Mayfield and Lamar Jackson w/ read option and QB designed runs. Two extremely successful rookie season.
I’m very happy with the direction my Brownies are headed! Had they canned Hugh Jackson earlier, the Browns would have had a good shot at the playoffs! I’m happy Jackson is finding success after all the doubters but I don’t believe his style of play is sustainable, both from the perspective of potential for injury and teams learning to figure him out.
I REALLY don't like the fact that he is taking direct shots at Fields here. "This dude hasn't done anything." Now if Fields does come here, the QB room is going to be cancerous with Tate already coming in not liking him just because he wants to play here. I don't like that at all. If Tate is truly about the competition and winning the job, he should be supportive of his teammates or potential teammates if they beat him out.
“This dude hasn't put a single second into Ohio State football. I don't know why somebody would think that the grass is greener on the other side, but I guess he's kind of looking at it like a fantasy way, I guess.”
Agree, not a fan of this kind of talk at all. It's one thing to brag about how many places he could start at and how he's still here at this point just because " he loves his boys." But it's not his place to be speculating about the motives of a potential transfer in public and essentially acting to try to sabotage OSU recruiting a player. This is not a good look at all and actually shows me a lack of confidence. You really are a competitor, then welcome the competition. Close your mouth and compete. This just sounds like a scared cat hissing to try to ward off a challenge.
"This just sounds like a scared cat hissing to try to ward off a challenge".
That was the funniest line I have read here in months. Great analogy.
“ this dude has and put a second into Ohio State football “ Tate
Dude needs to shut up. He’s creating ill will already. Can’t imagine what he will say if he loses the job
I like his moxie. regardless who it is, OSU's QBs will be just fine...
16-2 is SWEET!
I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t dreading a return to the zone read. Love me some Tate, but but a buncha five and four star WR’s aren’t going to be Blockers first.
Round on the ends and "HI" in the middle. O-HI-O.
I hope Fields does come to OSU. But, if he does he must beat-out both Martell and Baldwin. They must start out as 1 & 2.
Haskins will be first round pick of Giants, Jacksonville or perhaps Denver. Hoping for Giants.
Holy Cow, DP, you posted the same thing like 10 ten times!
Pretty confident these 10 posts were an accident. Why don't moderators delete 9 ???
This man is full of Buckeye Spirit.
Many will jump on his bandwagon, after he leads us to a championship.
Don’t EVER underestimate him.
I love Ohio Tate, and I have to say, when I first saw the headline for this story, I expected him to make a bold statement, but I didn't think he'd mark his territory quite as defiantly as he did. But, hey, good for him!
At the same time, I really hope Fields comes here--I say bring on the competition and may the best man win--OR...
What if it's a win-win situation. That's my best hunch. After all...
In 2014, did it turn out to be a bad thing that Cardale Jones and J.T. Barrett played on the same roster? Or, hey, was it a bad thing that Kyle Murray transferred to Oklahoma and shared the same QB room with Baker Mayfield?
Oh, and this just in--apparently, Alabama has done okay with Tua and Jalen Hurts taking snaps for the past two years.
For that matter, there's even this ugly rumor that the Buckeyes were beaten by a tandem of quarterbacks at Florida back in 2005--by Urban Meyer, no less! But, alas, I still don't believe that nonsense, because I personally tuned out after Ted Ginn took the opening kickoff to the house, so I knew it was over and watched a movie instead.
I did to add to my previous comment. Not only is Tate a winner, but he is a Buckeye.
The kid's got spunk! I like spunk! I also see some of the same things in this kid that I see in Baker Mayfield.
Welcome to Real Life Wednesdays (or any other day of the week) because this is how the world works - or at least the world of capitalism. Even if Tate never makes it to the NFL, the business world is always looking to improve. Whether its the younger professional with advanced degrees/tech skills or the proven employee already on staff, there will always be somebody looking to take your job. So choose your words and actions wisely because you never know who is going to be your boss !! (or peer).
You gotta love a guy who is willing to take on the challenge, instead of running away from it.
Proud Buckeye, BSBA Class of 2000, MBA Class of 2003
Day will select the best quarterback for 2019, in this I have complete trust. Whether that's Martell, Fields, or Baldwin, who can say, but the takeaway from Tate's statement is that no matter what happens, we will have a wealth of options at QB next season.
"porque las estirpes condenadas a cien años de soledad no tenían una segunda oportunidad sobre la tierra."
I wish he would just shut the fuck up and let his play speak for itself. If he's really unconcerned with competition then he doesn't care WHO comes into the program. Doesn't he have a game to prepare for?
