Skull Session: Rose Bowl Reminiscing, Nick Vannett Hangs Out With Gee Scott Sr., and Brian Hartline Tweets Cryptic Tweet

The Haskins anticipation is starting to KILL me. He’s going to either be the best QB in college football or the best rookie QB in the NFL next year

Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.

I wish they wouldn’t put those tweets out there.  I can see no way that he returns...it would make no sense on so many levels.  I wouldn’t put much stock into him staying.

HS
SilverHaven's picture

Oregon's 1st-round NFL QB Justin Herbert announced he is staying in college another year.  Herbert said:

"The University of Oregon has been a special place to me for as long as I can remember. Words will never be able to express my feelings of gratitude toward the people that have built and maintain our program.
"What I have come to realize, though, is that nothing could pull me away from the opportunities that we have in front of us. As we prepare for our bowl game, I would like to ensure that there are no distractions outside of this game. My commitment to my teammates, our coaches, Duck fans and the University of Oregon has never been stronger. I’ll be returning to the University of Oregon for my senior year. Go Ducks!."

Herbert hurt his shoulder last month in the rivalry game against Oregon State, but says he's even going to play in the bowl game against Michigan State.

I actually think there are a couple levels where it does make sense.

As great as he was this year, there are still some parts of his game that he needs to clean up before he can be considered a good pro QB. Obviously that's the case with a lot of draft eligible players and he's not necessarily going to be expected to be elite from day 1, but I think he could really benefit from another year honing his craft against lesser competition before being thrown into the fire in the NFL.

That said, he's pretty much guaranteed to be a top-10 draft pick, especially given the relative lack of other competent QBs this year with Justin Herbert staying in Oregon and Kyler Murray (possibly) playing baseball instead. So while I think his pro career as a whole would benefit from another year of college, it's hard to pass up the $10-20m signing bonus he'll get this year for another year of unpaid ball where he runs the risk of an injury that seriously hurts his draft prospects (and puts him into the same draft class as Tagovailoa and Fromm which could make it crowded at the top).

My guess is that there are more top WRs who are silent commits to Ohio State. I agree that Haskins is getting paid next year. Any team picking at 5-10 that doesn't pick him may regret it. Hopefully he is there whenever the Bengals pick.

HS
Dstacify's picture

I would love for Haskins to become a Bengal but unless he's BPA on their board when they pick I think they would pass on him. They are pretty steadfastly committed to Dalton as their starter for now (as annoying as that is) and the team does have much bigger needs than QB (specifically O-line, TE, and LB). I think it's very likely Haskins ends up a Giant. Unless Pat Shurmur is fully drinking the Eli Cool-Aid now and intends for him to remain the starter well into his 40s lol.

Yes it does Buctor. And with the new year, I vow to keep my posts on the positive side, not so much with scarlet and gray glasses, but less critical of the coaching staff. I went back and saw way more negative stuff coming out of me about Coach Meyer, Beck and now Davis than they deserve. And now that Meyer is gone and will go down in the books as a legend, it’s just idle bitching from a guy who never coached and never ran a 40 fast enough to play Big Ten football.

J.Williamson 4 Star top 150 recruit and I think he is underated.  He has great size and legit track speed.  He has a hurdle play where no joke gets about 6-7 feet in air and travels about 7 yards or 20 feet.  He also runs good routes for a Highschool track type player.  He broke Eze Missouri hurdle record as well.  Reminds me of Devin Smith.

Then the 2020 haul.  If we get this guy as well wow.

All those articles you listed do not analyze the Rose Bowl-- except for the first one you mentioned with Kyle Jones doing his video analysis weeks ago back on Dec. 10th.
Mahalo, Kyle.
The other articles deal with OSU players in the NFL draft or an OSU coach in retirement or... but have little or nothing about how the competing offenses and defenses will stack up in the Rose Bowl.

The Gaston v Beast powerpoint is a very fun way to start the day after Christmas. Nice choice Kevin.

I could watch the 2010 Rose Bowl over and over. Not the greatest game of all time, but so well played and coached by the good guys.

Very glad that bowl games are back finally. I have to work part of the day, but should have plenty of time to watch some good football, not that NFL stuff.

Hope all 11W folks had themselves a good Christmas, or whatever else you celebrate. Time to get back to it.

It was marvelous to behold.  I admit I was fearful, and kept anxiously waiting and waiting in the 2nd half and esp in the 4th quarter for the vaunted Oregon offense to cut loose on our Buckeyes.

They held strong.  The Bucks have still not lost to the Ducks.

I don't know why Hartline of all people would be tweeting about Fields but it sounds like that deal is close to being done anyways. Which makes me think Haskins is indeed leaving. I can't really see Fields coming here if Haskins returns for another season since his desire is to play immediately (which obviously won't happen if Haskins is back).

2. Delivering packages for Amazon is honorable; writing stories that border on lawsuit invitation is not.

3. I posted this elsewhere, but Hartline could be the first in a line of former GAs with NFL experience. I think Day likes the youth and energy. Combine that with the NFL creds and you get recruiting success.

Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing.

Brian Hartline for Zach Smith was a pretty good deal for us.

Even though Urban turned out to be the “player to be named later” in that trade? I’m not saying I prefer Smith over Hartline—straight up, that deal’s a hands-down winner—but I personally believe the origin of Urban’s retirement is a part of the collateral damage stemming from Smith’s shenanigans.

See I feel that was minor on the list.  I think his health was by far the biggest.  I also think he got tired of not getting the benefit of the doubt on a lot of things.   Only team that goes 12-1 in two season and not make the CFB as well.  Urban for all he accomplished has always been looked at as the bad guy.

HS
iowabuckeyes's picture

I think a lot of that may have been a by-product of the Smith scandal. His headaches weren't new but they might've been exacerbated by the added stress and scrutiny wrought by the fallout and accusations. He was exposed to the harsh glare of the spotlight and the microscope like he never had been before. That isn't good for anyone's health.

HS
buckeyedude's picture

I would love to see Haskins back for another year of amateur sport, but nothing leads me to believe that is going to happen. If the Fields kid comes to C-bus, I'm looking for an old fashioned battle for the starting QB spot for the Buckeyes. And don't sleep on the Baldwin kid, either. That was Day's hand picked QB. I just would like to see a firm decision by the end of spring camp.

"If you're not changing, you're falling behind."

HS
Dstacify's picture

I'm sure Baldwin will be considered but if Fields comes here he'll be third in the pecking order in the competition behind Martell and Fields. And Martell's tweet is definitely an indication that he has no intention of jumping ship immediately if Fields is brought on-board. Bring on the competition.

For some purists, Christmas movies must center predominantly on the joy, love and nostalgia that define the season. But the season is actually "defined" by much more. It also amplifies loneliness, cynicism and family dysfunction, for instance.

Based on this definition, “A Midnight Clear,” which is an underrated movie about a squad of US soldiers assigned to a listening post in the Ardennes just before the Germans attack in the Battle of the Bulge and the chaos that ensues as they try to escape the onslaught, definitely qualifies as a Christmas movie.
