Great team win today! Really looking good with one more tune up game before B1G play re-starts.

The first half was ROUGH to watch.

Can’t tell you how enjoyable it is to watch this team play ball, there are so many contributors. Especially when it’s winning time - they just seem to be able to lock in, and take the opponents heart. Daggers until the other team taps out.

 . . . against zero turnovers!

Great play by Woods, CJ, Kaleb and Young.

Thanks for the threads and Bingo, IP.

Very nice win. Cant remember the last time we even beat UCLA. Lets blow out High Point and enter B1G play on a high note.

We only lost 2 games that year & played in the championship game.  I’m for repeating that.

1961 was the last time we beat them. We had lost 5 in a row.

Great team balance with Kaleb carrying them early and the rest of the guys wearing them down on perimeter and along the baseline. Go Buckeyes!

For as ugly as the first half seemed to be...the stats showed that OSU played a great team game.

Also, CJ has flirted with a Triple Double two games in a row...sneaky sneaky

His first half was really ugly but he redeemed himself nicely in the second half.

I thought Washington would be the one to shoot UCLA out of the zone, but it turned out to be CJ. CJ is much better on the wing being the shooting guard.

I'd rather be a minute early than an hour early, 'cause I like to procrastinate.

HS

We need second half CJ going forward.

Stay golden, Ponyboy.

HS

Great win but CJ and the team have played back to back poor first halves, in fact quite poor.  Just think of what they could do if they play two solid halves in the same game which they will need to do in a challenging B10.

Took awhile to get it going but Wesson was huge in the paint and we hit the shots when it mattered.

Another good win! UCLA isn’t an easy team to beat. I like where this team is at, 11-1 with one more tune up before Sparty comes to the Schott on Jan 5th!

If the guards can play well more consistently this team in dangerous.

HS

If you would have told me this team would only have 1 loss (assuming they beat High Point) during non-conference, I would have been ecstatic. This win, along with those Cinci and Creighton away wins, will really help soften the blow for that brutal B1G schedule. Great second half, Bucks.

This is definitely where I parked my car.

Just continued to be amazed at how good a coach Holtmann is. Just his in game calmness and adjustments are superb. And with the players he has coming in the next 2 seasons...look out.

Stay golden, Ponyboy.

Next years roster is going to be scary. Going to be scary deep with 10 good to great players. Feel bad for a guy like ahrens though who guys seem to love and is a team first guy. Just don't see how he is going to get any minutes his first two years. Know he played today but it was very briefly and because of the zone. Hopefully he can be patient and wait his turn because he seems like a good dude.

HS
southbay's picture

His brother seems to be doing ok at MSU, we’ll see.

HS
Ohio Guy in Jersey's picture

Way too soon to make judgments about Ahrens. The guy can shoot. That’s always a valuable skill.

HS
raiderred's picture

Well he’s not getting any minutes right now is what I am basing it off of. And that’s not me trashing him. I don’t think he’s bad or anything. Just hard to get minutes as a freshman on a top 15 team. And we are only adding more pieces than we are losing next year.  So it’s only going to get harder. Again, I like the kid and I will be rooting for him. I hope he sticks around like his brother did at MSU and makes an impact to earn minutes by that third year when they should be available

i so no it just can't be true, but...

Well if this ends up being a "second half team", that will be OK.  CJ really stepped up after halftime and even though we never really lit it up at least some outside shots went in and forced UCLA out of that zone.  I do think we will see a lot of zone from opponents this year as we just don't really have a plan for attacking it.  Both Syracuse and UCLA left some pretty big gaps that we didn't exploit, we did a better job today of at least probing it, but the best way to beat a zone is to dribble drive to the basket right through those open spaces. That will get them out of it faster than firing 3s.  Also, gotta recognize the 2 alley oops that Kyle Young threw down.  Those were just beautiful finds from Washington and Woods and he finished them both perfectly.

HS

They have a plan. Had open looks today and against Cuse. This is a streaky outside shooting team, so even the best plan won’t work in that case.

What a great addition Woods has been. And what a great move to start him. Such a veteran presence on the court (except for that foul with a minute to go)!

So with UK beating UNC it's quite possible we come out of this little double header as the highest ranked team of the 4 tomorrow.  In a "rebuilding" year.  Crazy.

HS
Kieren1's picture

It was a good, gritty win. UCLA always has talent. Woods is a must as starter. His presence and shooting has been a big boost for this team. Jackson had a great game as a leader but needs to work on his passing and cut down on the turnovers! K. Wesson is a centerpiece for this team. Strong performance. Would like to see him be even more aggressive with the ball. A. Wesson has improved significantly since last season. Young is coming along well as a key contributor in the paint as a rebounder and short range shooter but needs to be more aggressive. Muhammad is showing flashes of brilliance on offense and his effort / D is critical. Washington is a fearless shooter and really like his play. Jallow is a great athlete and is continuing to improve. Keep playing hard and leaving it all on the floor Buckeyes. Pick up your next win and go into the Big Ten season at 12-1 with momentum.

7 times i started to post about this game... 7 times i deleted the words...

i got "rolled" by the abrupt roller-coasters of this contest.

There were 'terrifics' ...right next to 'awfuls' in a 'Helter-Skelter' pattern, individually and team.

This game data made the concept of value by 'averaging'... absurd.

Had Coach Holtmann substituted by what a player did, or did not do... who played what when would have been... uh... 'different'.

A fascinating example of why we ought to be 'students of the game' and each other's helper/supporter... not some 'expert' on the sidelines.

Our Buckeye team is much worse AND much better and more mysterious and more inspirational... than i realized.  I suspect there's 'more' what that came from but i haven't a clue who, or when, or how much !

GO BUCKS!

I think the "roller coaster" is becoming the norm across CBB.  I watch a lot of basketball games and while I am not as "invested" in non-OSU games, I certainly see similarities across the board. So often I see teams lose some intensity when they get a 10-15 point lead, while the team behind maintains their intensity and the game tightens. It always seems like it's harder to regain the intensity once you let it go. Yesterday OSU did a better job of keeping UCLA at arm's length, but Kansas, for example, didn't and ended up losing to Arizona State in a game they led most of the way, and looked to be in control of for most of the way as well.

HS
JMeadows's picture

See a lot complaints here about the first half and they are legitimate, but I saw some great adjustments that led to a well played second half.  We all knew this team doesn't like a 2-3 zone and it really affected the first half play, but immediately in the second half the passing was better, especially into the high paint where Kaleb was able to get more involved with the offense.  So, all things considered I thought the learning that evolved made the first half worth it.  Maybe the Bucks will have an answer the next time an opposing coach wants to exploit a zone.

Never place a bet on anything that can talk.

It is incredibly fun to watch this team! Even when it is frustrating for stretches they are giving their! Thank you Holtmann!

Woods at the point and CJ off ball is a VERY difficult matchup!
