Dwan Mathis' Flip to Georgia Leaves Ohio State Needing an Immediate Transfer and an Additional 2020 Quarterback

Birm says he couldn't get his academics in order to enroll early at OSU.  Not saying he was told yesterday, but could have been told last week and was trying to get it figured out/look around

The 6-foot-5, 205-pound 4-star prospect from Oak Park (Mich.) had intended to sign with Ohio State and enroll early with the Buckeyes. But as he received word that there may be some academic issues holding up that plan he began to explore other potential options.

HS
joeb69's picture

He wanted to be an early enrollee and he couldn't get the grades to get it done at Ohio State according to Birm

HS

He couldn't enroll early due to grades and he really wanted to enroll early so he is going somewhere that he has a better chance to enroll early.

HS

I don't think I've ever heard of someone rejecting the school they really wanted out of an inability to enroll early (though I suppose if I lived in Michigan, I'd want to get out ASAP).

Is this a known fact?  I recall Emory kept looking around and wouldn't reaffirm his commitment.  Then OSU finally had enough of it.  I don't recall him being told to look elsewhere for unrelated reasons.  Then again, that was already a year or two ago.  I could be misremembering.

Some facts of the matter per tOSU recruiting................

A-tOSU does in fact have higher academic standards for incoming players than other schools. Not at the level of Stanford or NW, but certainly above the SEC or much of the rest of the B10. That said..........

B-The staff/school certainly isn't going to air the admissions dirty laundry of recruits-for both legal and class/ethical reasons. As some have said "Where's there's smoke, there's fire", the reverse is also true-if you aren't seeing any smoke/contact/info-the fire has burned out and isn't being rekindled........

C-I'm certain the staff does in fact tell recruits that admissions and such might be "easier" at other schools-and recruits get the hint.

HS
Buck68's picture

Very useful relevancy, on several points, LB U!

WAG:  'this' is not 'the last second'... nor this, nor this; but,

continuing last second perspective...reveals a very vulnerable 'feeling' to 'telling'.

Rather, does any Buckeye know if Mathis just got fall H.S. grades, and, if so...how do they affect his academic standing and college eligibility?

And here's another of those 'so DV' quotes:  "IF you can keep your wits about you... when all around you are losing theirs...."

Is there a "just have to take" "the latest greatest ever super-star", where it's best to start solving a perceived immediate problem... with an unknown #2 w/'benefits'?

I would 'highly recommend'... 'letting' ttun test "fire, aim, ready" for us as a 'best practice'.   ;-{)}

I was wishing him the best. And wondering about Haskins not going, Martell, Baldwin, and if Fields comes is actually a crowded room. Ohio State cooling certainly could have happened.

Finishing his education is a legitimate reason for Haskins to stay. Me wanting to watch him sling it one more year is not.

#walkaway

HS
BrutusB's picture

That puts the Buckeyes in need of a quarterback who can play immediately, as well as one who can add depth for the future.

Did Tate get hit by a bus or something? I know he doesn’t have much real game experience, but outside of seven throws last year neither did Haskins and that turned out ok.

Though to be clear, I’d definitely take Fields if he’s interested.

HS
Kevin Harrish's picture

I meant in the sense that they are at the very least on the roster and able to play, not that Ohio State necessarily needs them as a starting quarterback. And they can't get that from a 2020 quarterback. But obviously, if you're going to add a transfer quarterback, you want to get the best one available, which is Fields.

Buckeye06's picture

If Haskins declares (and we all expect he will) then we are down to 2 scholarship QBs going into 2019 which is not enviable

HS

Good chance that Battle flipped even if Urban was still coach. Tough loss but not tragic. Mathis flipping actually got me excited as hell. This years QB class is NOT strong at all. Mathis would have struggled to see PT here anyway. He was strictly depth. But him flipping obviously makes Fields a near lock. Fields is a generational talent. We should all be excited. Best QB coach in the country is our HC and the recruits will come.

HS
Silver Sniper's picture

I agree, Maka. The math never added up for Mathis to see much playing time between the QBs already entrenched and a stud from AZ on his way. Prolly best for both parties that he took off now rather than later.

HS
LB U's picture

If you've been paying attention, you would know Battle has been gone for weeks now and Mathis signing somewhere else shouldn't be that shocking considering all the smoke around Fields.

HS

  1. I sincerely doubt this result would have been any different if Meyer was still the head coach.

You have to remember that Urban's first signing day was not an early signing day. He had from end of November til February to build something. Day had two weeks to manage things with the coaching change.

HS
Bucknut20's picture

He's also a first year head coach. Not one that already has 2 national titles under his belt.

HS
Ohio Guy in Jersey's picture

Urban was a rock star before OSU. He had a proven track record. Day is largely unknown by recruits and high school coaches. This season will be very important to launch his career successfully. And he has a good roster to do it. Just need to shore up the QB position. Fortunately that’s Day’s forte.

HS
fishleehooker's picture

Urban was and is a rock star through and through.

But Day at 39 is another Urban possibly. He doesn't yet have the rock start thing, but with the Urban and Chip Kelly connections, the up-and coming coordinator turned head coach thing personified, and the Qb coaches and HS coaches that meet him becoming VERY impressed with him as well as his offense.....it's kind of only a matter of time, though not many coaches have that Urban rock star thing for sure.

HS
Monclovabuckeye's picture

The Quincy Avery recommendation of Day is huge with Fields and will help our QB recruitment for the foreseeable future.

Meyer is still the head coach at OSU at the moment. So, this is not really fully Day's class. It is sort of a strange spot to consider.

HS
cecsix's picture

We've known this 2019 class was going to be a down year since the Zach Smith stuff this summer.  They were getting verbals from great players up until that happened, and then the spigot was immediately shut off.  This isn't Ryan Day's fault.  I'd put it more on the University leadership for dragging out the investigation and suspending Urban for no reason.

Ryan Day is known to be a great recruiter, but there were some serious headwinds for this class.  2020 will be a top 5 class.

HS

I'd imagine it depends on the NCAA (he's trying to get cleared to play next season).. If he's cleared that would speed up the timeline. If he's not they would just bring him on scholarship to the class it made sense to do that as there wouldn't be any rush since he couldn't play until 2020...

HS
cecsix's picture

It won't be decided by then.  The NCAA is slower than the federal government when it comes to making decisions.  They didn't make a decision on Patterson for months, as I recall.  Fields is going to have to pick a school without knowing his eligibility status for sure.

RunEddieRun1983's picture

I just don't want to see them "take a guy" because they need a guy. Yes, depth will be a concern, but make sure the guy you take at least is of the right mindset, and has the talent, and potential.

For instance, I know we all love, now, reading the tweets of one Stephen Collier, but when he was given a scholarship, it honestly just felt like, well we missed out on our guys, and we need a guy, he's a guy.

NO disrespect intended to Collier at all, but he was never going to see the field at Ohio State, but to his credit he turned his time at Ohio State into a degree, and is, by all rights, doing well in his life post football.

Fields is a perfect example of a guy that could make some noise at Ohio State, I'm ready to go all in on him.

Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.

HS
camcop71's picture

And from everything he said while he was here, and after, he was a "team player". He knew his position and expectations and was fine with that.  Could he have been a serviceable QB if called upon? I think so.  But he wasn't called upon and he was fine with that.

"I was tired of trying to work my way around the back so I just ran him over.” -Joey Bosa, PSU 10/25/14

HS
RunEddieRun1983's picture

I guess it just comes down to perception. To be okay with just being a guy on the sideline, to me, that lacks a little bit of that competitive spirit. Not to knock the guy, like I said, no disrespect, but to accept that role, to me, shows a lack of that competitive edge.

HS
tcm1968's picture

You have to wonder what a kid like Martell is thinking. The guys that recruited him are gone. We appear to be mid change in our approach to QB and play calling. His new head Coach hand picked Baldwin and all sorts of rumors we are in play for Fields.

Martell went into spring ball thinking he had a legit shot at QB1 and could go into this spring buried on the depth chart depending on how things shake out..

Go Bucks!

HS
Nickstar532's picture

As of right now Martell still has the best shot of being QB1 in the fall, think that's what he's thinking.

Go Bucks!

HS
analyticalguy's picture

AND he's a competitor. He'll battle for it. On the other hand, if Fields lands in Columbus eligible for 2019, AND finishes ahead after spring ball, Tate could go the transfer route.

HS
Hineygate's picture

I still think Tate would stick around as a back up for the 2019 season in that case. He already burned his red shirt so his eligibility wouldn’t be effected by sticking around and he would be one injury away from being the starter. I do think he would transfer for the 2020 season however.

HS
analyticalguy's picture

He has three more years after this one, and would have to sit out the first year at his new school no matter what. It may not make a lot of sense to transfer after a rsSo season, sit a year, and then play just his fifth year at a new school.

Of course, I think that Tate IS likely to win the job for the Buckeyes, even if Fields transfers in and is deemed eleigible, so there are a lot of "ifs" that would need to fall one way for the transfer option to come into play.

HS
Bucks19's picture

Tate is NOT better than Fields. No way he is our starter if Fields is here.

HS
script-ohio's picture

No one comes to a school like Ohio State thinking we'll never recruit another kid at his position again and that he'll be handed the starting job.  I don't get why anyone is concerned about what Tate or any other player thinks, you come to Ohio State because you're confident in your ability to earn the job.

HS

HS
TarBuck's picture

Fields is still supposedly playing in the Sugar Bowl. I would not count on him even transferring yet. For all we know it was a UGA ruse or hothead decision that will be walked-back. Hell, at this point Haskins returning is just as likely as landing Justin Fields.

I’m sure Coach Day will find another QB but all this talk of increased chances of landing Fields seems a bit premature.

HS

Gotta agree with you here. I've been seeing that same "sugar bowl PT" stuff around. Just have a hard time believing it. He isn't going to play over Fromm next year, and Fromm has already admitted to looking over his shoulder at times this year. So people are saying Kirby is going to play Fields just to get him to try and stay?? Have a very hard time seeing that.

HS
Bucks19's picture

He hasn’t decided yet. That’s why. They are treating him like a recruit as they should

HS
Kevin Harrish's picture

I'm going to have to disagree strongly on the "Haskins returning is just as likely as landing Justin Fields," because I firmly, firmly believe Fields is transferring and Haskins is heading to the NFL.

But I do agree that Mathis' flip doesn't mean much in terms of the chances Fields ends up at Ohio State (though it might provide a little indication of Georgia's quarterback situation). Fields could still go to a school that isn't Ohio State.

'57Champs's picture

If you calculate the class with ZH, J McKenzie... And Nolan Smith (Closest you can get to adding Justin Fields) then this class would finish #8, with 3 less commits than anyone above us.

Combine that with the fact that this was a "weak" class, and I think we'll be ok.

I really don't like the idea of taking someone else's 2nd choice.  Hurts and Wimbush aren't right for us. Though Hurts led Bama to the title game 2x, it was never really him leading it, he had a fantastic supporting cast and needed Tua to take over to win the title game.  He could do great at OSU, but he would never win us the big game. Wimbush was benched for a better player at ND.  IMO ND was one of the teams that regressed this year, not moved forward, and that was with their "better" QB.  I don't want either of these guys to come to OSU, they are both good players, just not elite level QBs that go out and win you a game.

With all that, I am also confident in both Martell and Baldwin for the future and Jack even later down the line.  Don't start freaking out quite yet, but yes address the depth issue. Don't bring in a guy to cause a QB controversy if you don't need to.

HS
QuadCitiesBuckeye's picture

HS
SoHudBuck's picture

Agreed, but what I meant was with the other 2 options (Wimbush and Hurts)  Both are transferring with the intent to play and play now. Both have been benched for a better option. I don't want a guy coming and stirring up the locker room for no reason.  I'll take an athlete like fields any day. Just don't want a situation with a QB controversy. Even with JT and Cardale the offense never clicked because they didn't know who to follow.

HS
QuadCitiesBuckeye's picture

OT,, so I went over to Mgo to see what their coverage of recruit signing is like.

I would like to thank the team here at Eleven Warriors for the excellent, easy to read, easy to spot coverage of today's signing day. The mess of a website called Mgoblog is about as easy to navigate as a Paris roundabout. I think Michigan has two signees, plus they got Hill back either on commitment or signing, I can't tell.

With no Signing of the Stars recruitapalooza as in year's past, it's almost impossible to figure out who has signed with them. Even their members are going to BTN to watch for signing news, LOL( and complaining the coverage is awful.)
