I agree. I remember at the beginning of this cycle many of the recruiting sites talked about how weak of a QB class this was. It took a while before OSU locked on to Mathis. They looked at several other QBs before flipping him. I always felt like OSU wasn’t ever really in love with Mathis but he was the best option at the time. I don’t see this as a big loss as long as Day holds on to Miller.

Don't listen to Freddy P. Soft

I really don't take this to mean that Fields is in.

Me neither.  Can't read too much into the decisions of 18-year-olds.  Reports linking OSU to Fields may have been enough.

If we get Fields, this is probably worth it.  Though the ultimate nut-punch (both to OSU and Mathis) would be if Fields decides to stay put.  If that happens, the conspiracy theorist in me would want to call shenanigans on Ol' Kirby.

HS
Ih8UMich's picture

Hopefully one reached out to the other and they have their commitments and teams straight. Because yeah, it'd be nuts for both - but especially Mathis - to make this kind of decision in the dark when a simple DM would make life easier for each of them.

HS
deg0ey's picture

Worst case scenario (from our perspective) is if the outcome of that DM conversation was Fields saying "I'm definitely leaving Georgia and OSU is still on my shortlist, but I haven't decided for sure where I'm going yet"

That's probably enough to talk Mathis into the decision he made, but doesn't necessarily mean Fields will take the spot in Columbus.

HS
deg0ey's picture

I really don't take this to mean that Fields is in.

Agreed. I think it's a signal that Fields is probably going to leave Georgia, but it's far from a given that we'll be the beneficiaries of that move. He was previously committed to Penn State and took an official visit to LSU before settling on Georgia and both of those teams could use an upgrade at QB. And that's before we even get into Oklahoma making a push after presumably losing Kyler Murray after this season.

I think we have as good a shot as anybody at landing Fields, but it seems like a long way from a done deal at this stage.

HS
Northern Nevada Buck's picture

I'll make that trade 7 days a week and twice on Saturday.

Mathis was a MSU type player...think Tony Banks from 30 years ago. Milton at scUM is much better. Come on down Fields or Hurts.

For whatever it's worth, 24/7 Sports has him the third ranked HS QB since they started publishing rankings in 2000 (behind Vince Young and Trevor Lawrence) and tied for the eighth ranked HS player at any position (behind the aforementioned QBs, Clowney, Robert Nkemdiche, Rashan Gary, Ernie Sims and Ronald Powell).

Obviously there are no guarantees he lives up to that level of hype (and it's surprising a guy that good couldn't beat out Jake Fromm), but it sounds like he had a pretty damn impressive HS career.

HS

If Fields comes and the QBs on the roster can't beat him out, why do we care how they feel?

HS
BuckeyeInOrlando's picture

I don't care how they feel... but I care if the QB room is left depleted.

As Buckeye fans, we should know and appreciate the value of the backup QB as much as (or more than) anyone.

HS

Agreed. But you don't worry about bringing in a possible game-changer QB just because it might mean some backups will transfer.

God bless and go Bucks.

HS
EMoThaGr8's picture

Not only another school, but two other schools.

If I remember correctly, he originally flipped from Iowa State to Michigan State, then from MSU to OSU, now from OSU to UGA. The only thing left for him to do is transfer lol

The Buckeye behind enemy lines...

HS
Chewbucca's picture

He could also give up football and take up lacrosse.  Options abound.

HS
CptBuckeye24's picture

If the Fields rumors gave him cold feet so be it. But you figure Fields is going to jump at the NFL at the first chance. So Dwan is legitimately getting a fair shot to be a starter as a RS sophmore (assuming he would RS this year). Haskins did the exact same thing.

I don't see how his playing time and future is affected. If Martell won the job, he's probably a 3 yr starter, leaving one less year for Mathis. If he feels UGA is the best choice for him, then he has to make the best decision for him.

This Seems like that might be a hastily made decision when you consider he just flipped without visiting Georgia. I could be missing something but I didn't read anywhere saying he visited. Seems like a strong reaction to something that may have had little effect on his future here. Regardless, he would have to compete with Baldwin and Miller in the future and that didn't change.

HS
Always_A_Buckeye's picture

Remember, JK committed without visiting OSU.

HS
CptBuckeye24's picture

But not in the 11th hour.

A lot going on here

HS
TarBuck's picture

So he didn’t want to sign here in case Fields transferred, but he’ll sign with Georgia who still have Fields until at least the Sugar Bowl?

If Fields ends up staying at UGA, then I have every reason to suspect this as a long con on their part to flip a QB in order to sign 2 this cycle.

HS
TXNut2488's picture

Nah, he wanted to enroll early and wasn't able to qualify academically for OSU. However, UGA seems to have found a way to make that work. Go figure.

HS
osu78's picture

If someone can't qualify for OSU I'm surprised they could for UGA. Its gotten hard to get into UGA, even as a GA HS grad with nearly perfect grades, SATs and activities.

HS

Georgia is a great school. It's ranked ahead of tOSU. I don't know where you guys come up with some of this shit

bobbyd

HS
osu78's picture

+1 to counter DV.

It, like OSU, has upped its game over time; neither are any longer graduate and get in. That comes at a price, namely kids who always dreamed of attending OSU or UGA and may be multi-generational legacies don't get in. The flip side is it tends to up the game at other in state schools as they get kids with stellar credentials they may not have gotten in the past.

What I like about rankings is how they are all over the place and there are enough subcategories so schools are top 10 in something; which they then can trumpet..

Strive at all times to bend, fold, spindle and mutilate.

HS
TXNut2488's picture

Who was talking shit about UGA's academics? I'm talking more about a SEC school figuring out a way to get a kid in academically. No one said it was a dumb school or anything...

HS
jcposu's picture

Where do you come up with your shit? The QS World Rankings have tOSU at the 89th best over all university in the world. Georgia comes in at 431. Times Higher Education rankings have Ohio State at 71 & Georgia in the 401-500 range. The Wall Street Journal put tOSU at 21st and UGA at 54th in America. So who’s ranking UGA a better university than tOSU?

The GA lottery funded the Hope Scholarship which made wonders to the academic quality at UGA.  When it first started having a minimum of 3.0 GPA for a free ride certainly helped in attracting in-state kids from going elsewhere, and I'm sure they've upped the requirements now.

Bodene

HS
bd2999's picture

Yeah, from what I have read it is possible that Fields stays at Georgia. Particularly if they give him playing time in the Sugar Bowl, depending on how that goes for them. They for sure wanted two this cycle.

Just kills OSU if they do not get Fields now.

HS
TXNut2488's picture

I think OSU is fine, one way or another. Of course, getting Fields would be great but I have every bit of confidence in Tate and Baldwin.

I don't see any way Fields stays at UGA though. It would just cause way too much shit if they try to make him happy by playing him in the Sugar Bowl...then what? Fromm gets pissed off? He already mentioned he was looking over his shoulder at times this year.

HS

I can’t imagine what the last 24 hours have been like for Dwan. Before the Fields rumors I am sure there wasn’t a single thought about not signing with the Buckeyes today. Just shows how fickle recruiting can be.

You have to think this bodes well for upcoming news pertaining to Fields, though. If that is the case, I’ll take it.

HS
Chewbucca's picture

Even if we get Fields, he would not be eligible to play in 2019.  That would still leave us down a QB overall would it not?

Wait a second, Fields may or may not transfer.  So this kid gets all shook and commits to the school that Fields is technically still at?  Either there was something else we didn't know brewing with this kid, or he has serious phobias about competing for a job.  I find it hard to believe that in 2 days the Fields news could have completely rattled a kid that bad.

Either there was something else we didn't know brewing with this kid...

We should assume that there is, in fact, 'something else brewing' to which we aren't privy. I mean, that just seems obvious, to me at least. Day did not just let his 4star QB sign elsewhere not knowing what's going on with the status of Justin Fields. If Mathis had been on the fence then him flipping wouldn't have been in Day's control, but he was "100%" Ohio State 48 hours ago... Fields is on his way, and if he isn't I'll be shocked.

When I die, sprinkle my ashes over the 70's

HS

I agree with you.  Just like it has now come out that Day preferred Baldwin over Emory Jones and thus Jones flipped on signing day.  I'm assuming the same thing has happened here.  Don't forget Jalen Hurts might be available as a grad transfer too.

HS
camcop71's picture

Mathis - "Hey Dwayne, what's up with your boy Justin?"

Haskins - "He's leaving GA. Not saying he is coming here, but..."

OK, first of all, hard pass on Wimbush. Second, I'm not super bummed about this. Not because I'm over-hyped with the possibility of Fields, but because I can't remember a QB commit we have been so collectively indifferent toward. All the attention is on Jack Miller next year. Some times, I can't remember if his name is "Dwan Mathis" or "Graham Mertz."

New Day for OSU. Same noon for TTUN.

Could still have nothing to do with Fields maybe coming to OSU. Could be as simple as Haskins is coming back and the QB room is more crowded then Mathis thought it would be. Fields going anywhere opened up the depth chart at Georgia and he's QB2 day 1 so it was an easy flip. Haskins comes back and Mathis is QB4.

Many times that is out of desperation. I guess if he is graduating and trying to enroll early, he feels like he has to do it, but worst case is graduating early and then working out for 6 months and signing in Feb. Not that bad of an option really.

Agreed...I think he couldn’t quite get in here and big bad GA called him and he just was star eyed filled. I think I would have waited to see what happened. Teams need QB’s and if OSU doesn’t get Fields, he burned a huge opportunity.

Off the top of my head I can remember Marcus Baugh doing that with Ohio State.

I mentioned in another thread I wonder If Mathis was told he would be the only qb in this class to bring him here from MSU. I also wonder if Tate is the man Day wants as a qb with his style of play.  When I think of Martell I think of Chase Young batting balls, tipped or knocked down at the line of scrimmage as he did in the  PSU game ?

Not great, Bob. And the Fields bit isn't a surefire happen either. A 247 post yesterday said that he's heard OU would be the early frontrunner, plus he's sitting a year (and, if not, Tate isn't going quietly into the night).

I would have advised Mathis to wait and see if Fields actually does transfer before he signs anywhere.

My Georgia buddy sent me a text last night asking if I had heard anything about him flipping but I laughed it off.  Jokes on me.  Gotta go hard after Fields now.  Ugh, 'crutin.

Well, for those who were waiting for some signing day drama...

HS

Don't know about Fields either. He said that he WANTS to play with his long time friend who is either a Miami or OU pick. We just might be out of luck on this one, depending on what Fields feels.

The kid was looking for a place where he does not have to compete for a job just because Fields says he wants to come here does not mean he will and also does not mean right away. Fields does not leave GA. with out the ability to play right away. Also we already have 2 QB's waiting to compete for the job as well here. He does not think He will have to sit at GA. more then a year and wait on Fraum to leave. What every though If the young Man really wanted to be here he would be. Good luck to him but have fun with fields staying there.

Just saw Georgia tried to flip Texas A&M qb 4 star last few days. Sure seems Fields is gone and Mathis is like Georgia's 2nd side chick.

That’s a pretty bold move considering he’s never step foot on campus or built a relationship with the coaching staff. Where there’s smoke, there’s fire.

I am more worried about his teammate Justin Rodgers, but would have loved to have Dwan as well. Has the ship sailed on Justin?

QB is the last thing we’re going to need to worry about under Ryan Day

it sounds to me that he felt he could not beat out fields. That is even if Fields transfers to the Bucks. Good luck to him at Georgia.  I hope its what he is looking for. We have Tate Martell and hopefully Fields. Who knows? this year has been nothing but drama! I am glad we have who we have...these are strong kids with strong character. Go Bucks!!!

LOL, Deteroit Free Press posts story that "OSU loses top quarterback recruit." Guess they're a little butthurt over Harrison.

Prolly not going to run the story that "Michigan loses to defensive end recruit." SBD!

I'd rather be an hour early than a minute late.

Three decommitments from three different teams? That's a huge red flag, because it comes off as he's trying to find the path of least resistance. If he thought he was going to sit on the bench at Ohio State, guess what? He could get buried in the depth chart if Fields reconsiders and stays at Georgia. His father isn't doing any favors for him, by shopping him around.

Jack Miller in the 2020 class. No worries here.

HS

Not terribly concerned about losing Mathis.  What I don't get is, why do players who have made a verbal commitment wait until signing day to switch?  The only purpose it seems to serve is to stick it to the team you made the verbal commitment to.  It would have been another matter if he was uncommitted, and made his choice on signing day.

I know they're just kids, but geez, don't they have parents and coaches?

Just keep the team players that WANT to compete coming to Columbus.
