Might want to remove Mathis now from the main subject post

HS

You can‘t blame the DBs from jumping ship after watching the inconsistency of the players and perceived poor coaching (ex. never looking back for the ball and taking the interference penalty instead, all year long.)

You can‘t blame Mathis if Fields is really coming. That would more than make up for some of the defections.

HS
Kevin Harrish's picture

I think Pete Thamel gave the best explanation so far:

Here’s the situation: During Georgia’s football game against Tennessee on Sept. 29, a Georgia baseball player named Adam Sasser allegedly shouted racist remarks toward Fields. Sasser was dismissed from the baseball team within a week and issued an apology on his Twitter account. Fields could claim under NCAA transfer rules a “mitigating circumstance” that directly impacts his “health, safety and well-being” as one way to obtain the transfer. He also could claim that he’s pondering playing baseball in college, as Fields was considered a high-end prospect in high school. While Fields hasn’t publicly expressed significant recent interest in playing baseball for UGA, he was considered a draftable MLB player. (His sister plays softball for Georgia.) That incident would give Mars fodder to argue that Fields would be uncomfortable playing baseball at Georgia, and perhaps bolster an argument for immediate eligibility elsewhere. He may not need the baseball argument. Regardless, hard to bet against Mars, especially given the sensitivity surrounding the circumstances.

Even if everyone knows damn well that's not the reason he's transferring, it's probably enough for reasonable doubt and it could create extremely bad and loud backlash if the NCAA or UGA tried to fight against it, particularly among the folks not actually familiar with college football or this specific situation.

buckzilla1's picture

So your saying in order to avoid folks who jump to conclusions without knowing all the facts, that this can influence institutions to succumb to pressure from the media and make decisions based upon avoiding perceived wrongdoing, when in fact there may be no wrong doing at all? This is stunning. Gives me an archnoid type of headache.

Hey Cancer! This ass kicking is brought to you by the Sultan of the sythe. Give it hell CalPoppy.

HS
Kevin Harrish's picture

I'm suggesting that if he makes a compelling enough case, it might not even be worth the NCAA or UGA fighting it further to determine if there was any wrongdoing. Especially since the incident pretty clearly happened. It's not like they'd be trying to determine whether or not the incident happened, they'd be arguing about how it affected him and will continue to affect him in the future. I'm not sure that's a battle the NCAA or UGA would like to wage, and even if they did, it's a pretty damn hard one to win.

AZbucks77's picture

This is nothing but pure speculation on my part, but my thinking is that a conversation has probably occurred between Mathis and the staff and it could be a possible indication if Mathis does sign tomorrow that the staff has said they do not intend to pursue Fields.

HS
Buck68's picture

Think Mathis won’t sign or if he does it will be with Georgia. It is a risk for Ohio state to lose him but Fields is worth it. If they miss on both..figure it out later I guess

Stay golden, Ponyboy.

HS
OSU069's picture

If they miss on both then we have Tate Martell for multiple years with Jack Miller and Matthew Baldwin competing for next. We will be fine. Would love to have Fields and Mathis though obviously.

HS
Kevin Harrish's picture

From talking to folks on Georgia's end, Georgia felt they needed two quarterbacks in this class even before the potential Fields transfer. Obviously, that situation gets a little more dire with him on the fence. I haven't personally heard that they're expecting a flip from Mathis at this point, but they'd push hard for him regardless of what they think happens with Fields.

BABuckeye's picture

Why would Fields transferring to Ohio State matter to Mathis? Fields is a year ahead of Mathis so Baldwin should be more concerned. And if Fields gets the waiver? He wants to be the starter in August of 2019. This impacts Tate. So if Fields transfers to OSU, then Tate leaves, and Mathis back to where he started. If Fields were to start right away, he may be more likely to leave for the NFL earlier than Tate so Mathis’ wait to start could be shorter. Shouldn’t the focus be on Tate’s reaction rather than Mathis’ reaction?

HS
Kevin Harrish's picture

I think there's a chance they both have a reaction. I don't fully know Mathis' thought process behind it, but you're only looking at Ohio State's situation before and after a Fields transfer – you're leaving Georgia out of the equation.

What I think you need to do is compare Ohio State's situation to Georgia's after the transfer. Mathis might just see a clearer path to the field at Georgia if Fields leaves than he does at Ohio State. I mentioned Georgia's quarterback situation is pretty dire and there will presumably be an open competition after Fromm leaves – which could be after next season. At Ohio State, he'd have to battle with Matthew Baldwin and Jack Miller for the spot even after waiting two seasons behind Fields.

I’m thinking this was Nick Saban’s  arrogance. Sounds like Hill told them he wouldn’t commit to them if they signed three safeties. Nick probably said something along the lines of “ a recruit is not going to call the shots”. And they took battle anyways despite what Hill told them.

HS
WildBear Buckeye's picture

In the grand scheme of things, Saban was right, even if this is exactly what happened. Bama will still be Bama with Battle, and Michigan will still be Michigan with Hill. Rashan Gary was supposed to make them win every game. As was DPJ. Every position is important, but a safety can't exactly change a game single-handed. Not unless the opposing team plays into that safety's strengths.

Hot take here. Nick Saban has had really good players but his secondary has quietly been pretty bad for a while. Especially at giving up big plays. It’s just the front 7 is usually so good it doesn’t get exposed that much

HS
WildBear Buckeye's picture

I really have to wonder if this has to do with offenses figuring out how to scheme around "shutdown" secondaries, at least for the moment. The days of the kind of secondary LSU had with Patrick Peterson and honey badger seem to be gone for now.

That’s not a bad take. However, I feel like it is scheme, not players because they are still all going to the NFL as first and second rounders.

When given the option of having your rival have a 5 star or not having a 5 star, I will always want them not to have a 5 star. It's pretty simple. In recent history, their 5 stars have been underwhelming. But, eventually, if you keep getting 5 stars, you'll get a true playmaker. I never want Michigan to have true playmakers. This is not even legal in the Big Ten. Big Ten requires schools to offer 4 year scholarships I'm fairly certain. Players can be strongly encouraged to look elsewhere, but they can't just have their scholarships yanked.

Also, 25 is not a hard number if they have the ability to back count early enrollees, which I am not sure if they do or not.

Probably the only thing we will hear is where he takes official visits, and even that likely won't happen until after bowl games, IMO.

Interesting. Gilver and Wiltfong are hearing conflicting info it sounds like. Wiltfong said Mathis will sign with OSU. This one could get interesting as I would say Gilver and Wiltfong are the best in the business

HS

Or this is moving so fast that Givler posted on a more recent development that Wiltfong hasn't had a chance to respond to yet.

HS
huffdaddy's picture

If you are Mathis and are really struggling with a decision and basing it on Fields, isn't the pretty easy answer to wait until February? No point in flipping if you are waiting for more info, and no need to sign if OSU and Georgia are still going to need QBs in February.

I think it is pretty logical to do that. It is not really optimal for OSU or recruiting buffs but it is totally right for the kid. I am not even that convinced the kid is leaving Georgia. Given he is supposed to be with the team through the Sugar bowl.

HS

With Stud having been on staff for two years, this seems like a no brainer. I'm really interested to see what Day does with Urban's apparent two-year guarantee to assistants with respect to Taver. Because I think it's clear OSU could do better without even trying very hard.

AE, birm, and pretty much everyone else have basically been saying he’s out without saying it. Especially if you read their responses to any nester questions.

HS

Yeah, I feel the guy is an average offensive line coach and not a good recruiter. I am surprised he was on the staff for that long really. It will sting to lose him but it looks like losing him with the OL recruits would not hurt quite as much as it would with Meyer.

They need to push hard to keep or get some additional offensive line recruits this cycle and hold or gain ones in the next one.

HS

I wonder what he is basing that on. Tate transferring would hurt. I am not as big on him as some here but he is a solid option to have there.

HS
urbansjacket2's picture

To clarify--if Fields comes, he thinks Martell is sure bet to transfer. If Fields doesn't come he isn't leaving.

HS
huffdaddy's picture

The bottom line on both taking Fields and on Tate transferring: if Day takes Fields, it's because he has spent two years watching Tate and doesn't think he is the guy to take us to the playoffs. Pretty simple. If he thinks, "I am so fired up about Tate starting next year," then we don't take Fields. So ultimately - this is a Day decision. (And Fields' decision of course)

He literally just said what spooner said. I believe he’s said before that it wouldn’t be a good look to the NCAA if they deny Fields eligilbity after using the race incident earlier this year. UCLA could be Tate’s landing spot if he were to transfer.

I hardly think someone calling a player a bad word is a legitimate reason to void transfer rules. If they allow that every single transfer in the country could make such a claim. As a Buckeye fan would I forget about my principles and applaud the decision should he come here, sure, why not.

Sani

HS
SFlaBuckeye13's picture

Transfers are being granted immediate eligilbity more often recently. Obviously, the claim will be deeper than he was called the n word but in today’s climate I don’t think it’s in the NCAA’s best interest to deny Fields what he wants.

The world is yours

HS
bd2999's picture

Assuming that they can make a reasonable claim and feel uncomfortable in the current situation I do not see why the NCAA or the university should have grounds to not let them transfer. It is the kids life either way. Should be allowed to transfer with limited strings anyway. It is not like they have a straight up employment exclusivity contract.

HS
ZMBucks's picture

A bad word is one thing versus a racial slur coming from someone within the athletic program.

I doubt the NCAA and/or Georgia would want to fight against that.

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

It will be extremely fascinating if Tate ended up at UCLA. If you recall DTR was his backup in high school and was not coming here bc we signed Tate the year before. He said he didn't want to sit behind him for another few years. So if Tate ends up there I would bet a large sum of money DTR transfers after ending up the starter as a freshman this year. Lol it will be fun to watch that unfold.

HS
actionstanleyjackson's picture

I think Tate would go somewhere where he can start immediately...could see him going home to play for UNLV or something like that just to get on the field immediately.

Stay golden, Ponyboy.

HS
IBLEEDSCARLETANDGRAY's picture

UNLV is going to be his first choice. Their head coach is his HS coach. UNLV will also be playing in the Raiders new stadium when its finished so there's an added draw for him.

Personally, I dont want to see Tate go. I think he is going to explode no matter where he plays.

"You're the patron saint of the totally effed" - Hot Tub Time Machine

HS
actionstanleyjackson's picture

Well then...if Mathis does not sign with OSU today that will be a big tell of what might be in the works. Still think Mathis should sign because he is going to redshirt anyway and Fields will only be in Columbus 2 seasons if he is provided immediate path to play.

Stay golden, Ponyboy.

HS
bd2999's picture

It could be, but it would still be going out there a bit for OSU if there were not pretty sure about where Fields ends up.

HS
NHBuckeye's picture

I wish it could happen today.  That way it gives Mathis a chance to look elsewhere (even though I still think Martell & Baldwin are more impacted that Mathis is).

Or, let Mathis sign with us today and let the Fields thing play out even if it means we lose out on him.  The absolute worst case is we miss on both guys and that feels possible right now.

Fields of Dreams

HS
napbuck's picture

I think the Fields thing will be quick as well I think he will want to be in class in January in case he gets his appeal to go through then he can start learning the play book quicker wherever he goes. NCAA could take awhile though to get back with his appeal.

HS
actionstanleyjackson's picture

Fields needs to be in school ASAP for winter conditioning and to have a real shot to learn the offense.

If Fields transfers to OSU, I expect Tate leaves immediately. I do not think he sticks around to compete for the job through winter and spring.....which would make the NCAA ruling massive for OSU. If Tate leaves, Fields has to sit a year, Baldwin is your QB for this season.

Stay golden, Ponyboy.

HS
bd2999's picture

Needs to be, sure but ESPN has reported that he plans to stick with Georgia through the Sugar Bowl. Then look at his options again. He is allowed to be in contact with other schools now but it is still possible that he ends up at Georgia. It would be something if he did that and Mathis went there too.

HS

HS

Birm reported that he has some academic issues with Ohio State that would hinder his ability to enroll early. Sounds like he is good to go to enroll early at Georgia

HS
Stellar's picture

Staying with Georgia through Sugar Bowl practices makes a lot of sense for Fields. Bowl practices are one of the key times for young players to develop as they have the opportunity to get a lot more reps than they would durring a typical game week. He wouldn't be able to practice with another school yet so it makes sense to get the work in while he can for the next few weeks.

HS
Go8uck5's picture

Is it likely a coaching staff will give a kid reps who has a foot out the door? I must admit, I'm a little confused on the whole "officially transferring" yet "can be contacted by coaches", but "still able to practice with the team through bowl season" scenario. On one side, it seems like traditional football team values like loyalty and patience are allowed to further decay in this scenario, while on the other side I get if you are a once in a decade talent, you would not want to sit a second consecutive year before playing. I am fascinated to see how this turns out, especially after losing Mathis to UGA. Crootin',is never lacking in drama, that is for sure.

New Creation

HS
Stellar's picture

I'm not very familiar with Georgia's roster but they do need somebody to run the second team offense through bowl practices.  They may not like that Fields has one foot out the door but it's unlikely that they have a lot of better options.

HS
buckslan's picture

It would be in Tates best interest to do conditioning and football practice at Ohio state before transferring to another school. He would transfer after spring practices in that scenario. But Tate is a competitor, he's not going to bolt because Justin Fields joins the team. He isn't built that way.

If you haven't seen the Justin fields highlights for Georgia this season you definitely should. He's decent as a passer at this stage, obviously could use some teaching from Ryan Day, but woo boy does he have some wheels. He gets up to speed fast and is a blazer. He's a true dual threat QB.

HS

HS
SpoonerBuck33's picture

Birm calls him the best QB prospect he's ever seen. Givler and BG say he's a rare once a decade type talent. I trust their judgment since they saw him live during the process.

What kills me are all the posts from fans asking why he didn't beat out Fromm even though UGA made false promises. Theyre trying to compare it to Tua and Hurts. Well for one have they not seen Hurts throw a football or read a defense? He's nowhere near Fromm who is going to be a 1st round pick at QB when he leaves in likely 2 years. Whereas Hurts will play pro ball at another position. So not the same scenario at all lol. Fields is a potential video game stats monster in our offense. But I'm good either way bc we will have QB's in confident can take us all the way.

Georgia and Alabama seem to get who they want on the trail this year. That is for sure. A little surprised given the rumors just started and Mathis was solid up until this point. Georgia may have been talking to him the whole way but just surprising to me that this would be the case.

OSU could be in deep trouble at QB currently. Particularly with Fields being an unknown until after the Sugar Bowl. Georgia could end up with Fields and Mathis. I doubt that but it is possible. Fields could go anywhere but OSU and OSU is in a bit more trouble at QB in terms of depth. I think they would have two guys maybe three at that spot?

Life blindsided him with the very high likelihood of Fields coming to OSU. It was already going to be very hard for Mathis to break through, with two years of Tate followed by Jack Miller being the much more likely path. Now Tate may be replaced by a more talented player who would spend one more year than Tate at OSU. Can't blame Mathis at all here. He might never have broken into 2nd string at OSU, with Baldwin around.

Everybody gets flips. Hard to blame Day too much here. When the whole Meyer retiring thing hurt in some ways and not in others. The Mathis one hurt but Fields could have made the same choice then. If he was that shaky than there it is.

Also, it seems he was not eligible to enroll early at OSU but Georgia let him in. So, that probably helped their cause too. Day cannot help that.

Does not matter now, not sure he can just transfer out right away or anything. It would be a little ironic for him in the end. OSU really needs to work Fields to transfer in though. They need that sort of guy or a QB in the class now. It will probably hurt with another QB though.

Really, this is not great for OSU unless they get Fields and even then depth probably suffers a bit still. Need to take two in 2020. Hope Miller is cool with that and does not get shaky.

The actual report was that OSU HAS been trying to get him to sign in February as they work it out academically. He thus began to explore other options, and the Fields report helped UGA in their last-ditch recruitment of him. His teammate is Justin Rogers (2020) who is already committed to UGA.

Not hard to see the REAL story.

Mathis is not Days or UFM fault...that is completely because of our strong interest in Fields...if we get Fields, all is good in the world

HS
Buckeyejohn's picture

I have a crazy theory that is almost certainly incorrect but I’ll float it for fun. What if Kirby asked Fields to put his name in the portal and start all this drama? Hoping that OSU would bite and then steer Mathis to UGA as a result of the uncertainty. Fields then takes his name out of the portal a couple days later and publicly states he was never seriously considering leaving. Kirby steals Mathis while keeping Fields. I know it’s nonsense, but the thought did occur to me.

HS
WildBear Buckeye's picture

So ... Kirby would have done all of that to flip a player outside of the top-200 from OSU. Well, he is Smart ...

HS
Buckeyejohn's picture

Right, a coach like Kirby probably wouldn’t do that. Not unless he believed Mathis to be an absolute world beater and even then it would be nuts. It would take a slick coach like Franklin to pull something like that off.

HS

I don't know how that really 'screws' over Ohio State when they have Martell and Baldwin with Chugunov as third stringer and their guy for 2020. Even if no one transfers in, I'll 'roll' the dice on Martell and then Baldwin.

No such thing as a bad win

Except fields has shown frustration with Georgia at times this year on how he was used. Also he did not beat out Fromm, who is going to be on the roster in 2019 and almost surely a 3rd year starter. He has better chances at playing time elsewhere, and he's a big fan of Ryan Day supposedly.

HS
WildBear Buckeye's picture
HS
urbansjacket2's picture

Guys, the Fields rumors certainly impacted Mathis, but it sounds like there are legitimate academic reasons for the flip as well. OSU would not allow him to enroll early, which was a big deal to him, which certainly played a huge part in the flip to UGA sight-unseen.

HS
actionstanleyjackson's picture

So we wait on Harrison, McKenzie and any word on Fields

What if Fields has already picked OSU? Could see where he has been thinking about this for a bit...used his QB mentor as the go between him and OSU..I just cannot see Day letting his only qb in this class who has been committed for months walk unless something was solid

HS
Hoosierbuck7's picture

Several have already reported/implied that it will still be a while before we know anything about Fields...if the transfer does indeed happen.

My guess is that the Buckeyes didn't let Mathis walk, but were handcuffed with academics and his desire to sign now before they know more. No doubt, they'll explore other grad transfers and JUCO prospects to hedge their bets.

Didnt see if it was posted above but Cornelius Johnson commited to Michigan, they have a really good class and we likely wont pass them due to total numbers. We are currently at 14 and will get to 16 later.

I think it will depend on who we sign in Feb. Bet we add 2-3+ more then.

HS
ponder10's picture

Based on what we have now plus IF we get Harrison and McKenzie AND Fields commits, that would be a top 5-7 class in my mind (irrespective of what the rankings say).

Then, if we replace Stud as the OL coach and particularly in the recruiting department and we replace Davis and potentially Taver that would put this class #2 or #3 in my mind. That would be amazing and I think several of these IFs that have been mentioned are likely.

Quality over quantity. Ohio State has a full 2 points more than Michigan does on 247 and that's without Harrison committing yet.

This! I am most interested in average score. We can shore up numbers and depth with the next two classes.

Been saying this for a while, have not been impressed with his tape or stats. I really don’t think losing Mathis is that big of a loss. Sure for depth it stinks. But I don’t think he was ever going to be a starter.

Anyone else kind of worried right now?  If you look at our board, we've signed everyone but G.Wilson and Doug Nester, our top 2 guys in the class. Seems like everyone is banking on Harrison coming our way, but even if we get those guys, our class is going to be down in numbers.  Sure quality over quantity is what we want, but you will always have injuries and transfers or things just don't work out.  I would really like to get this class close to 20, but sitting at 12 right now is somewhat concerning.

HS

No.

Wilson signed, Nester was never planning on signing today nor is he a top 2 guy. We will be at 16 today and could land Justin Fields this is a good class for a transition class.

HS
bd2999's picture

Someone posted a video of Wilson signing his LOI above. I have to imagine it will be in soon. The numbers thing is a bit of a concern in terms of bodies but not worried about it.

Really, the spot I am worried about for depth is the secondary. Even with Battle there was one in this class and you need to take one or two of those sorts in each class. They still will probably try to after the early signing day passes but will have to see what they do.

it is not great to sign a small class, but even with schools that sign 25, or OSU most of the time, it is not like all of those players ever see the field too much anyway. Many are backups at best. It is better to have solid backups than not but it is not the end of the world.

They should get two today and then probable get two or three more before Feb. At least I imagine that is the hope at the moment. That still would not reach 20 but it would put pressure on 2020 to be pretty good. They need OT's and DBs pretty badly.

HS
WildBear Buckeye's picture

OH2MD's picture

You’re probably going to get down voted into oblivion (I will as well) but I think there is some validity to your concern.  Losing and/or missing on Battle, Mathis, Broeker, Jacobs, Butler, et al  this late in the process is not ideal.   Missing on Harrison at this point would be problematic.

However, in the grand scheme of things Day by most accounts has done a masterful job of keeping this class together.  Day will have 2 months to reset the board, build a few relationships, and secure a few prospects who are not even on our radar at this point.

Battle, Mathis, Broeker, Jacobs, Butler

These aren't all the same. Battle -- yes, serious loss. Mathis ... it's complicated, not the least by his apparent grade issues. Broeker and Jacobs -- two guys whose likely future would have been career backups, with the added fact that their position coaches are on the way out. Butler ... I mean, I'm all for depth, but not being able to flip a guy from Kentucky to come to OSU and almost certainly max out at 3rd string -- I can't hold that against the staff.

HS
OH2MD's picture

Very fair points.  Thank you.  My understanding is that all of them were "takes".  If that's the case and OSU didn't sign any of them then they would have to be categorized as misses.

East Coast living with Ohio roots

HS
skierbuck's picture

I think Battle is a huge loss, as are the LB & OLs that stuck with their commitments.  I think that is telling, in itself.  Either the CB, LB, & OL coaches don't recruit well or that tOSU wasn't able to say with confidence that they'd be around after the bowl game.

I think Mathis was a good/great high school player and I don't believe he had "grade issues'.  That term gets thrown around a lot with a negative connotation.  In order to enroll early, there are other qualifications that he may not have met yet.  We would have accepted his commitment, but not his request to enroll early, simple as that.  Add in the Fields to tOSU rumors and you get what we got.

This is still an excellent class (average ranking) and we need to add a few DBs & OLs before the February signing period.  I have confidence that changes will be made and we will fill the "gaps" in this class with solid prospects and/or a surprise like NPF come Feb.

Go Bucks!

Ouch, all the way down to #18 in the 247 rankings.

But still #4 in players' average rating.

HS
bd2999's picture

And then they will jump back up some when they get some of the signs today and some of the others in Feb. So long as the class is top 15 or 20 they are fine. It would be a down year but it was going to be a down year anyway compared to past years.

Tune in about 12:45. Have to imagine Harrison and McKenzie will bring us up borderline 12-15. Which with a class this small would be unbelievable.

HS
napbuck's picture

My take is if we get Fields which nobody knows for sure and honestly wouldn’t be surprised to see him got to Oklahoma with Haselwood, but if comes here and Martell leaves we might need to go get another grad transfer like Hurts or Wimbush. We will for sure if Fields doesn’t get immediate transfer.

HS
Buck-n-A's picture

If we get Fields, why would Hurts or Wimbush come to OSU?  You would have to think they will look somewhere where they have a strong opportunity to start.  I'm not sure OSU would be the landing spot for either of them.

Id be more worried if we had a class of 25 recruits and were sitting in the high teens/twentys.

'57Champs's picture

If you calculate the class with ZH, J McKenzie... And Nolan Smith (Closest you can get to adding Justin Fields) then this class would finish #8, with 3 less commits than anyone above us.

Combine that with the fact that this was a "weak" class, and I think we'll be ok.

Because I couldn't go for 3.

Yes recruitng rankings matter but overall class rankings are as much about quantity as they are about quality. The only reason OSUs class is that low is because it's small right now Ohio State only has 14 commits signed. Almost all of the teams ahead of us have 20+ guys. Nobody in the top 60 classes has less players right now. If you're worried about rankings look at the individual players or the class average, not the class rankings.

HS
IBLEEDSCARLETANDGRAY's picture

Yeah Tressel didnt win many games with all this 10th+ ranked classes. His entire tenure was a disaster.

HS
Señortaystee62's picture

Game has changed drastically, especially since the early years of the Tressel reign, due in large part to a changing society (online connectedness, social media, faster reporting cycles, etc.). Coaches like Urbs and Saban have recognized this and adapted accordingly, which also helped spur on the evolution of college football.

To be sure, I think Tressel would still perform admirably as the head coach of OSU, but I bet even he would acknowledge he would have to tweak some things about how he ran the program.

Man, what a golden age we've been living in for Ohio State football! May the good times continue forever!

HS
bd2999's picture

To a point, I am not sure having a top 15 class is going to tank OSU's future outright given they have had top classes through this point. So long as you are top 10 or ideally top 5 I am not sure there is a correlation. Other than Alabama skewing it upwards. The rankings of any one player may not matter that much and probably don't.

This may be a bit of a reach but I think we'll be OK in the long term.

I liken this cycle to the coach who has player that has acted out and knows he should be disciplined. Also, this act occurred during the playoffs. So the coach has to decide do I sit the guy or play him (which is the only leverage a coach really has for discipline). If the coach sits the guy and they lose everyone says the coach was wrong. However, if he doesn't sit the guy, he sends the wrong message to all the players - current and new. Don't get hung up on the "acting out", the point is some times, at a critical juncture, you will have to make a decision that has short term consequences but long term benefits.

So, I think tOSU did the absolute right thing to announce Urban's retirement and the coaching transition as soon as possible. Also, reaching out to the 2019 commits (prior or close to the public announcement) was the proper move.

It looks like we are taking a couple of short term hits - Battle, Mathis -  to the 2019 class. However, I have got to think over the long term players (and parents) would appreciate the honesty and up front approach to communicating tough decisions.

PS this grad transfer rule also allows a team to plug a hole (or two) as a short term fix.
