Saban to the Packers?

That isn't buzz. It is one idiot saying he'd like to see Saban to the Packers and a bunch of content aggregators pushing it out for clicks.

Not going to happen.  Saban has made plenty of comments of why the NFL wasn't a good fit for him.

TeddyKGB - Agree 100% - They don’t call him “Satan” just for kicks in Miami because he was such a good coach for the Dolphins!!!

He did his stint in the NFL and could not adjust to not having control over grown men.

No way he leaves his fiefdom for the NFL.

The reason Saban failed in the NFL was because he couldnt stack the deck in his favor like he's done at Bama. Contrary to popular belief, Green Bay isnt the most glamorous place on earth.

He has made multiple comments that are similar to Urban.  That the problem with the NFL is that you can't outwork the other coaches/teams.  Also a 4 loss season is considered great.

HS
stxbuck's picture

You also can't outrecruit/out talent your competition w/ the salary cap in place. Like it or not, you have to find some role players on the cheap instead of chasing off 4/5 stars who don't develop quick enough and replacing them w/ more of the same.

The NFL is much more about x's and o's and planning on the fly instead of hoarding talent.

HS
Buckeye Chuck's picture

It's also a gigantic overstatement to say that he "failed" in the NFL. He took a 4-win team to 9-7, the Dolphins took a step back the following year with constant quarterback turmoil, and then they fell apart completely after he left for Bama.

Don't kid yourselves, he'd win in the NFL given time and a competent front office. But I think the problem here is that at 67, he's about run out of time to take a new job anywhere. I think he's at Bama for the duration.

I agree completely. Saban would probably still be in the NFL, maybe with the Dolphins, if the doctors at Miami were not idiots and they had signed Brees.

I visited Tuscaloosa when I was applying for Bama's MFA program in fiction. I have a vivid memory of going to a Church's chicken and looking out the window at an empty, desolate plain of gray grass and asking the lady at the register "Is this it? Is there really no more city?"

The only time I visited Tuscaloosa, it was for a breakfast stop during a roadtrip. We went to the "famous" Rama Jama right next to Bryant-Denny Stadium. After sitting for a few minutes a man came to our table completely unsolicited to start talking to our group. That was nothing more than a prelude to him then informing us, perfect strangers, that he's a state rep in congress and that he would like to take a few important minutes to talk to us (or rather, lecture us) on his stance on gay marriage. Oookay, lets hurry up and eat and get the F out of this place!

GB is a fantastic sports city. The place literally lives and breaths Packers football. Its the lifeblood of everything there. Its about as close to a "college town" as an NFL team could get. Sure, it ain't San Diego, but not many places are.

Besides, its not like Tuscaloosa is known for its chic milieu either.

Saban is 70 years old, he isn't leaving Alabama. Which is actually a good thing since now people are negative recruiting his age.

Just like Meyer, Saban values winning, and winning coaches don't like it when you lose multiple games in a season in the NFL, and you still have a "good" season.

Neither Meyer nor Saban are going to coach in the NFL

That's a Buckeye touchdown!

HS

As a Packers fan, I'd be ok with that. It will become dark days for Bama and Harbaugh wouldn't become the coach for GB.

Ain’t going to happen.  He’s clearly loving running college football.  He’s got a lock on CFP every year and is building a legacy that will probably never be equaled in his lifetime.  The NFL is a players league and he can’t rule with an iron fist.  Makes no sense on nearly every level.  Although, I would love to see the fallout.

Not a coincidence this is put into the public domain a day before signing day for recruits. Someone is floating rumor this strategically.

When the NFL allows each team to control its own schedule and doesn't require each game to be against other NFL teams, he might consider it.

Just so we can stop these threads from popping up in the future, NO TOP FLIGHT CFB COACH WILL EVER LEAVE COLLEGE FOR THE PROS.  Not Urban, Saban, Riley, or Dabo.  It is an absolute massive step down in terms of pay, level of control, and job security.  The only reason Pete Carrol did was because USC was undergoing investigation.  Anyone who ever thinks any of these coaches are leaving their programs are morons.

As a NFL head coach, what do you need to really do? Hire the good offensive and defensive coordinators, manage the media, communicate with the front office and manage the game on Sundays.

The head coach does not need to be the smartest X's and O's guy...that needs to be the coordinators. The head coach doesn't need to know the perfect techniques of each position, that is the position coaches job.

In my opinion, a great NFL head coach needs to be a great leader and one that communicates great on all platforms between fans, media, front office, coaches and players. Get the right coordinators and position coaches then the head coach should be more of a figure head than anything.

Why Saban and Urban among others would struggle in the NFL is that they have a drive for perfection/undefeated seasons and micromanage the game. If perfection isn't achieved, then essentially spontaneous combust. Did you see Saban's reaction when his RT had back to back penalties to end the first half? He erupted.

No such thing as a bad win
