according to wonderful big ten officials, i thought laying on top of a defender after you bury him was a 15-yard penalty
the kids are playing their tail off, and the coaches are screwing it up! - JLS
Yes, that was some crazy BS call.
Also the defensive "illegal block below the waist".
Yeah, had not heard that one, or at least not in a long time. I almost felt that for a while they were trying to keep the game close when it looked like OSU was moving the ball well. I do not think that is what they were doing but it felt that way.
Yeah, that was a horrible call. Just horrible. Not that OSU does not deserve a fair number of penalties but there are way too many that are just stupid bad calls by the officials.
Yeah never heard of the pancake penalty before dec 1st .
"Vitalum Vitalis "
Wow, if a pancake was always called a penalty, I wonder how Orlando Pace could have ever played? The rules, or at least the modern interpretation of them, is completely changing the game, and not for the good.
Wyatt Davis has very high potential.
Games are won in the trenches.
In old Ohio there's a team that's known throughout the land...
Wyatt Davis has a very bright future at Ohio State. Yes, there were mistakes in his first start, but overall he played very well.
There should've been some hiccups expected in his first start, both from him, and the coaching staff.
He's a blue-chip prospect, and he's got the right people in his corner to make him get better.
Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.
Nice write up, Colin.
I could read these types of articles all day. Its too hard to see individual performances while watching the game live, so an article like this is really great. well done
Can't wait for Wyatt to reach his potential and do what his daddy did: "Kill everyone."
For those who don't know that's his dad playing Alvin Mack in "The Program."

Yep. That was surfaced during his recruitment.

Great movie !!! I remember my Dad taking me to see it when I was in 8th grade during football season. He caught alot of shit from my mom for that one lol
" we play to win the game "
20 bowl practices as a starter will do wonders.
Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing.
I'm glad the future interior of our line is 6'3". I really think we had an issue playing with good leverage this year because they were all 6'6" or bigger.
I agree, especially at the center position. I've mentioned this before and people look at me like I am stupid. The average center in the NFL is 6-2 6-3 with 6-4 sprinkled in there, not 6-7. Obviously NFL teams prefer that height for good reason(s).
Wisconsin never seems to have a problem with leverage at that height.
To give anything less than your best is to sacrifice the gift.
Enjoy the wins over *ichigan, ....I still remember the dark days of the 1990's....
Tall players need to be taught to NOT stand up straight and get low. Maybe our O line coach isn't earning his paycheck?
BigBuckeye says Go Bucks
Agree ! They all look like they are standing straight up at times when run blocking.
One bad play - I am ok with for being do green.
He's learned so much and will be an anchor next year.
Go get'em Cal Poppy - we are behind you !!
It's not a rivalry .............. it's a wreckoning.

The balance of both Mr. Davis definitely has a grip on.
Love to see a streak of nastiness back on our oline.
Outstanding first start for Davis. I was pretty excited to see him take over for Pridgeon next year, so I'm glad he was ready to take over when Meech went down.
Next man up.

I do think he's going to be good. Showed a little bit of a mean streak too.
Proudly dispensing unbridled arrogance since 1983.
Has loads of potential, just needs more reps to put it all together.
Oline next year:
How Firm Thy Friendship...Oh-Hi-Oh
Michael Jordan is probably going to the draft.
Has there been any discussion on this? I could see him going, but also could see him staying.
Not that I know of but usually players that are projected to go as high as him don't stay for their fourth year of eligibility.
Don't forget Matthew Jones!
Edit: I see that maybe you had him moved to guard, but he's a highly regarded center prospect. Not sure he switches, at least not next season.
“The best executive is the one who has sense enough to pick good men to do what he wants done, and self-restraint enough to keep from meddling with them while they do it.” – Theodore Roosevelt
I put him at G not sure if Jordan comes back or not. If Jordan goes, then Jones would get the start there...Myers/Jones could be switched as well, with Myers being G and Jones at C.
Makes sense! +1
Is the term "Slobs" still used? Always liked that, but don't read the players using it anymore.
It's all road rage.
He is gonna be great for us next year bc he is physical and coaching will help clean up his game
Davis did a great job. And perhaps the best part of Davis's start is that it told all that talent out there in the shadow of USC that OSU is a great place for a talented kid to develop his natural abilities into a NFL caliber OL. Love it!
Round on the ends and "HI" in the middle. O-HI-O.
Thanks Colin, Great writeup!

Colin enjoyed your article about the whys and wherefores of Wyatt's ups & downs in 'developing'
Have you heard of the old saying, "...work expands to meet the time allotted"?

I really enjoyed reading this article. Great job Colin.
Davis is going to be a monster over the next few seasons.
Fields of Dreams
The miscommunications are not too concerning, but the complete whiffs are.
I think the two go hand in hand. On any least one of the whiffs it looked like he hesitated, thinking he should go back and block his primary man.
"We gotta go win this next game and make the State of Ohio proud!"-UFM
I agree. And I think that'll come with time and experience.
Mahalo for the videos on Wyatt Davis showing his successes. I too easily noticed all his problems when he was floundering as white jerseys went by and called to the TV for Branden Bowen the Samoan to step in. Aloha.

Really nice article format. Appreciated. Great job.
* just the aside that I kept thinking Elflein's first insertion--wow then, and still wow
Chop it down with the edge of my hand
With Davis, Munford, Bowen, Alabi, and maybe Jordan coming back next year I think this line won't miss a beat and maybe even improve over the long haul.
"The only good thing about it is winning the d*** thing" - Urban Meyer on The Game The War
LT - Munford
LG - Bowen
RG - Davis
RT - NPF
I'll take it!!! Davis was called a "road grader" coming out of high school and is showing that his reputation is accurate. We could have an extremely young but talented OL next year. Hopefully we have a coach that can get them to their true potential. Go Bucks!!!
Everyone loves seeing a 2* or a 3* like A.J. Hawk turn out to be better than most kids who were highly touted.
But, for me, nothing is better than seeing a 5* get on the field and pay dividends. Maybe its just bc you read so much during the recruiting, you want them to be the best. Maybe that goes back to me EA NCAA dynasties, but I would just favor the 5*s more. Not very nice thinking about it out loud but its the truth.
Hawk was something special I played with him and his brother in high school they were complete studs.
I'm really excited to see Wyatt and Josh Myers play next year they came in as some of the top linemen in the country.
