What in the hell happened to Illinois basketball? It used to be really good for long durations. Now they are bad for the B1G. Down year? Bad recruiting? Not enough JuCo transfers? Great win by the Bucks and let’s keep the momentum rolling. Holtmann  has done a great job so far. And the new recruiting class coming in will give us a lot to be hopeful about

Thank you sir. Well played. The FNH is a favorite of mine. Great handle and control, lightweight and low kickback. Would like to get back to the range but then life happens. LOL- Christmas gifts for wife and kids, long days at work, swimming club for my daughter, Bills, Bills and more Bills. It’s all worth it though. Have a Merry Christmas season for you and yours!!

They can't recruit Illinois for some reason. I know some high school coaches in the Chicagoland area and they seem to like Brad Underwood, but it hasn't translated as of yet to holding onto top in-state talent. I will say that I think the university will give him time to build something (4-5 years), but they lack an identity. I suggest they build around Ayo Dosunmu; I think he'll be good.

Same with the football team. I talked with several people before running the Chicago Marathon this year. They said nobody wants to go to Illinois. As our retiring coach said, recruiting is the lifeblood of any program.

It's only his second good game, I was beginning to think he was a bust, for a 5th year player. Hopefully he turns it on for the b10 run. Is Jackson the weakest ball handling guard or what? Coach didn't want him on the floor in the second half. Opposing coaches should pressure him all game long, he weak. Illini coach targeted him big time when he had the ball, he was in their crosshairs from the opening tip. As he should be. The IU pace was fun to watch, too bad they get into so much foul trouble. If he can get some ballers there, they'll be awesome, looks like a slow build for him. IU looked dead in the second half, but they still turned osu over 9 times, most of it in half court. Glad 0su doesn't play them again, but they're fun to watch. Kaleb is such a stabilizing force on offense and defense. Iu makes a run, insert Kaleb, run over. What a luxury to have.

HS
JMeadows's picture

Harsh take on Woods.  He plays under control, dishes well and is good on defense.  Is he KBD?  No, but there's no way you can call him a bust.  He's a role player.

HS
ZeroDimension's picture

He is playing better defense, his defense early on was unacceptable.  He had a great game last night( a few plays could have been better).  I don't think he does play under control all the time... he got bailed out on a couple of close calls last night(they were the right calls, but very close)... I do not think he is a great passer.   I would like to see more calm leadership from a 5th year guy, and I will give him credit, he is trying alot harder on defense in the last few games...  He saved the game at illinois(but I think the Illini targeted Cj Jackson and took him out of the game), but he was also shut out the previous game.   I posted after the first game I was 50-50 on woods, because he absolutely stood still on at least 3 defensive plays and did not provide help... I have not seen that sense...   I am a big fan of defense... so I prefer Jallow, and Mo, and even wash on the court...  But if Woods can keep improving on defense it is a very nice to have..

I get that sometimes some of us are a little too critical of players, but sometimes posters will not allow you to mention anything critical even if it is constructive on this site(Not saying you...  but it seems to be happening more and more).

One Shoe

HS
JMeadows's picture

I agree that constructive criticism is fine and maybe my expectations for Woods are just not high enough, maybe he can get better, but I think he fills the role of a stopgap pretty well when CJ's game is either not working or he just needs a rest.  On the other hand, there is a big difference between constructive criticism and trolling and this applies more to the football side than basketball, where some fans get it in their heads that they should bash individual players, I guess, to prove that they have superior knowledge or some such shit.  Case in point, linebackers.  Are Tuf Borland and Pete Warner in the same class as Darron Lee and Raekwon McMIllan?  Hell no they're not and likely never will be.  But are they deserving of constant sniping by fans, even when they have a good game.  That's also a hell no; it's one thing to point out bad angles, but to laugh when one of them is praised for a good game is just wrong, especially when someone who actually knows what he's talking about like Zach Boren says they had a good game.  I just worry that as the basketbucks continue to improve the expectations of fans are going to get as out of control as they are for football.

Never place a bet on anything that can talk.

He can but there was an awful lot of ISO going on with him that led to some forced shots and turnovers. If his shot is going like last night it works but if it isn't and he plays that style it is not a good thing.

Outside of the turnover stretch the Bucks had a very good second half.

It's only 2 games but this might not be a fun B1G season to watch with all the whistles.

HS

Its been weird because some of the Big Ten games I’ve watched so far the refs let them play and they were great exciting games. For some reason in our two B1G games so far they’ve been whistle fests.

A win is a win. Some nice teaching moments when they go back and watch the tape. Should have put them away at the end of the first half and got REALLY sloppy and that made it a game. Much better in the second half. Always makes me nervous when a scorer has the ball like Woods and his job is to bleed clock. He forced 2 or 3 quick possessions there right under 3 minutes that should have just been clock burner. Another good teaching moment for Woods.. Just love Holtmann going with the group that’s working vs Thad’s ride or die with the same 6 guys...

And here’s hoping we don’t get the ref with the bald spot again. Not sure that dude got a call right either way.. Just awful..

I agree.  I understand his frustration because the fouls were called too tight for a Big game, but man he let the fans get out of control with his incessant rants.  I couldn't tell because they left the game early, but it looked like he walked off the court without shaking hands.  Guy is not setting a good example for his team.

As for Hummel, I really didn't notice him being down on the Buckeyes.  It seemed to me that he was pointing out that Illinois is not as bad as their record and that their coach was trying to get them to play better.  I thought he had a lot of nice things to say about Kaleb and Woods and Luther.

Never place a bet on anything that can talk.

HS
bucksfan92's picture

He did, and yes he was definitely riling up the fans.  It was a very bad look for Illinois as a program and him personally.

HS
gr8bucks's picture

Do you mean the lack of professionalism and sportsmanship that got coach H. teed up, and not coach U.? Hmm, no bias there! The game was over when u. was doing his monkeyshines. H. was trying to protect his players. I loved his passion too.

HS
JMeadows's picture

Holtman's rant for a technical was strategic.  He wanted to get the team fired up like coaches have been doing for decades. He wasn't frothing at the mouth, he stepped out of the box and forced a technical, like coaches have been doing for decades.

Never place a bet on anything that can talk.

HS
bucksfan92's picture

Holtmann got his T for a specific cal, a missed hard foul that send one of his players to the floor.  He wasn't trying to draw a T necessarily. Underwood was just a raving lunatic for an extended period of time.  He was clearly trying to draw a T so when the refs wouldn't take his bait he turned it up.  And when he pointed to that one ref's chest he should have been tossed. It's one thing to shout, but that's crossing the line.  Of course all of that was even shadowed by his 2year old's tantrum at the end of the game. He embarrassed himself and his program. Huge difference between his antics and Holtmann's first half T.

HS
actionstanleyjackson's picture

Benching Jackson most of the second half is a great message by Holtmann.

HS

We need to cut down on turn overs and that includes CJ who also needs to sharpen his scoring touch.  Hopefully his senior leadership will click in soon with some consistency.

HS
PRO8's picture

The TO's seem to be a problem for the Bucks... it seems many of the kids lack court awareness and force to many things. Also they don't at times move to the ball handler of course that could be they have a play setup and are afraid to be out of position but we truly lack a real PG which is a problem along with the lack of size at the F& C positions.  I guess that is why coach is bringing in a 5* PG and two 6'8" F's.

HS
gr8bucks's picture

I don't think he sent a message of any kind. He was trying to win a ballgame, so he took the turnover machine out, so he'd give his team a chance to win. Jallow is so weak with the ball, he should have been beside jackson on the bench. Iu's frenetic pace makes guards look weak when they're loose with the ball, and osu has several poor ballhandling guards. H. knows what he has at guard, they aren't strong with the ball, penetrators, or good ball handlers. What would his message be? Suddenly become all of the above or I'm gonna sit you? They'd never get off the bench! There's only a few games a year that they'll see real, 1-40 minutes of pressure. The rest of the games, they'll play their limited, but effective guard play.

HS
TurboNut's picture

CJ has been really off the last couple games, turning the ball over and missing open shots. I'm glad we have Woods and Washington to come in and help.

HS
TheVictoryBell's picture

Glad to get out with a win. The team played really sloppy at times. Illinois plays that West Virginia style so they force some of it. Holtmann will have some good coaching points from this game going forward. If we can get Keyshawn Woods and C.J. Jackson playing their best at the same time it would be great.

2-0 in the Big Ten!

HS
ibuck's picture

If we can get Keyshawn Woods and C.J. Jackson playing their best at the same time it would be great.

The more guys that can score, the less burden on CJ, who, as OSU's 2nd leading scorer, is drawing the opposition's best non-big defender. CJ is not as gifted a player as KBD or JT, so it's unrealistic to expect that level of play from him. So other guys (like A.Wesson, Woods, Luther, Musa, Washington, etc) need to step up, handle the ball well, and score. Team play.

Cutting down on turnovers, like getting rebounds, is needed by every player on the court.

Looking at the conference schedule, if I'm counting games right, I see 20 conference games with home-aways against Illinois, Michigan State, Iowa, Maryland, Purdue, Rutgers and Northwestern.

Home games only against Minnesota, Wisconsin and Penn State.

Road games only against Michigan, Nebraska and Indiana.

Not having to play Minnesota, Wisconsin and Penn State on the road are good things, while having Michigan only on the road isn't.

I don't see a single team in the league, even Michigan, that I don't believe, given how the team has played thus far, that they can't hang with.  If the team continues to play with high effort, and avoids too many costly mistakes, they will be in the mix at the end.

They also had a couple good years under Bruce Weber when he first took over and then sort of steadily went downhill from there. Groce made the Dance one year and that's sort of been their highlight season of the past decade.

Both their football and basketball programs are desperately looking for some light at the end of a long, dark tunnel. I don't think Lovie is gonna get it done with the football team, but I think Underwood might be able to turn things around. But he needs some more rim protection and rebounding in his frontcourt to allow his overplay-D style to work, and I'm not sure how compatible Trent Frazier and Ayo Dosunmu are as they are both ball-dominant scoring guards. They do have a commitment from a 4-star 2019 big Antwan January but last I heard he hasn't signed yet and some of their fans are starting to get worried.

Freshman PF Giorgi B has been a really nice surprise for them as he has greatly outperformed his lowly ranking, showing a good deal of energy and offensive skill, even against good competition. But I don't think he gives them what they need on the glass or on D, or at the very least he needs more help.

Jallow definitely played well, but this might be the first time he's had back-to-back double digit scoring games for us.

I'm skeptical of him ever being a consistent scorer for us but he's pretty steady on D and I do think he has the tools to be a very good rebounding wing. He didn't do much rebounding last season so it's very encouraging to see the 9 boards in this game (albeit against a weak rebounding team).

If he can keep up the defense and rebounding and chip in a few baskets here and there in the flow of the offense, he has a role.
