Nice timeline of events. Love Urbs and will always be appreciative of what he has done for this program, but what comes to mind is when he kept saying "I plan to coach". Maybe it is as simple as he wasn't 100% as of last week whether he was retiring or not, but I, for one, am somewhat anxious/excited to see his capacity with the university moving forward. Not sure why, but I have this gut feeling he will be sliding into the AD chair when Gene hangs it up. Time will tell. Coach Day has my support.
Lets go Bucks!
God > Family > Buckeyes football
Maybe it is as simple as he wasn't 100% as of last week whether he was retiring or not
This about sums it up. He doesn’t want to retire & knows he has the tools to win. But when he realized he couldn’t commit to the Buckeyes for any significant amount of time & that it would hurt recruiting it really hit him that he needed to walk away.
"Because I couldn't go for three"
You're absolutely right when you say he didn't want to retire. An ultra-competitive person is going to have trouble admitting that something has beaten them, and is going to keep them from doing something they love. I'm in my mid 40's, and my body is starting to tell me there's some things I can't do any more, and I HATE it. So on a much larger scale, I believe this is what Urban has been going through for a year or 2. I, for one, am really proud that he handled it the way he has, being honest with prospective Buckeyes, because in the end, they are kids. And I'll miss Urban as our coach more than words can say.
"We gotta go win this next game and make the State of Ohio proud!"-UFM
Do I need to hand in my man card if this article choked me up? I’m so grateful for all that Urban Meyer has done for TOSU and the great state. These were truly golden years and I’m certain he would have continued to compete at the highest level every year and challenge for a national title if he could have continued coaching. With all the slandering of his name and character that went on this year, I’m grateful that he has so many people and fans who have seen his works, and know who he is by that very character that was assaulted. And in the end, it was because of his character, and how much he cares for his players and recruits, that he did not want to be dishonest with them or feign that he would still be around to secure their commitment, and didn’t want to put the University in a bad position. What a class act and a once in a lifetime coach. Looking forward to seeing how he will continue to influence these young men and the great state of OH. So grateful to have Day and can’t wait to see what he will accomplish here. Go Bucks!
I was a wreck yesterday. It was like a major life moment and I had to mark the moment and reflect. I still feel weird, but a little better. Agree with everything you say.
You can have your man card back, if I can have mine back too.
Done deal, Avail!
Hope whatever medical procedure is chosen, it works and alleviates the headaches. That and that OSU finds a worthy job for him where he still get student athlete interaction.
Beat everyone, in every sport, all the time!!!
I don't remember any type of medical procedure being mentioned but I started thinking if there is one that they want to try this may have led to his retirement now to get this done. The issue is debilitating for him as he cannot perform the way he likes and it is probably not just the coaching aspect. I think this is possible but it is not something he is willing to talk about right now as it could have outcomes he is not ready to reveal or talk about and there could be a long and maybe difficult time involved in the whole scenario that was put in front of him.
“Coach Day had the opportunity to potentially be a head coach in the SEC and decided to stay at Ohio State,” Meyer said on Dec. 20, 2017.
Still can't help but think this was supposed to happen before this season started and the Zach Smith stuff put a GIANT curveball into everything and Urban had to keep coaching.
Great recap of the timeline. When I heard Gene talking about going one way or the other I found that confusing. He said: “I knew that ultimately Urban had to make a decision this past Sunday or yesterday, and I was going to have to move one way or the other,” Gene Smith said.
if Urban decided to stay what was the move Gene would make?
Fields of Dreams
Lock in Day with an extensive pay raise. Those talks had been happening since September. Day impressed Urban early & after he took over during the suspension, Urban began pushing for Gene to lock him up. He believed that at the very least with him at OC they could winutliple titles in the upcoming years. As his health deteriorated more noticeably he had to face the music.
Day gets his $5 million per for 5 years. Positive decision. Confident in his handling of players and game issues. After the most scandal-ridden year of Urban's career, he was lucky he wasn't fired for the ZS mishandling. That plus his terrible health issues and not even making sideline decisions made this "retirement" imminent.
I hate the offseason.
I wish Urban good health and happiness. What a coach, one of the greatest of all time. 7 wins in 7 tries against ttun. I bet some of the scum fans are pissed that their scum team will never get the chance to beat Urban while he was head coach of TOSU. Again, Urban thank you for 7 years of coaching my favorite team. GOAT!
I love that Michigan and their fans have been miserable losers over the past 7 years and that Urban Meyer has completely, utterly, and perfectly owned them. I love their tears and sadness that have refreshed and invigorated me. I love that they will never defeat Urban Meyer and his Buckeyes ever. They will spend eternity never having defeated Urban Meyer at OSU. I will have eternal joy over the completeness of his dominance over them.
Michigan fans are now obsessed and believe they can win next year. Won't they be disappointed.
I can’t wait to put it on them even worse next year!
I literally feel sick.
“Save yourself and relax during every game. I recommend a fine bourbon.”
I'm guessing, because Urban Meyer is a legend and the future of the program is uncertain.
Nothing about this article specifically, just been a bit shocked all day. I mean, I'm surprised I feel this strongly about it. I don't remember what I felt like when we lost Tress and some of his players, so no basis of comparison.
Good news is he wasn’t ‘shown the door ‘ and will be around for continuity in recruiting. This is the only way we keep both Meyer and Day. Just get used the pro style qbs and 600 yards of offense per game.
Now about that linebacker situation.....
Thanks for the concise timeline. Reading the timeline, it does appear that the Zach Smith crap hastened Meyer's departure from Ohio St, maybe by several years. The headaches recurred in October of 2017, he met with his doctors to discuss the ramifications of the return of the headaches, but he still had his contract extended this April 5th. So, in an eight month period, Meyer went from committing to coach through the 2022 season to announcing his retirement, effective January 2. It could be that the massive amount of extra stress brought on by the Smith investigation came close to breaking Meyer physically by exacerbating the cyst related headaches. Or it could be that this was the natural progression of the cyst, but I'm guessing that the Smith ordeal made it (the cyst) much worse than it would have been otherwise, this year.
Agreed. It would appear the ZS BS, media, and some of the OSU "higher ups" wore him down prematurely. Guess they got what they wanted in that witch hunt after all. Nothing but love for Urban.
Hate to see it end so abruptly, but he’s doing what’s best for him. Hopefully he has a long life ahead with Shelley abs their children and grandchildren.

I didn’t want to admit this reality. Get healthy coach. I have nothing but the utmost respect for you. I’m proud to say we got to know you and your wonderful family. Go enjoy them to the fullest extent. Once a Buckeye, always a Buckeye.
Ohio, the greatest state in the Union!
This was a well-written timeline. Unfortunately it's not true because when I wake up tomorrow the nightmare will end and Urban will still be the coach.
AKA the Horseshoe, the Shoe, and the House That Harley Built
This is kind of confusing. I get the cyst and headache issue. But if it was that critical, why did Urban sign an extension through 2022 in April of this year? What was Gene Smith's apparent preoccupation with Ryan Day this summer that he needed to spend so much time with him personally? It certainly was a convenient segway into naming Day as the interim head coach this past August. And then just a couple of weeks ago he settled in on Day as the next coach. And what did Gene Smith mean when he said he had to "move one way or another"?
Gene had to get to know Ryan Day because Zach Smith was arrested in spring (May?). The story didn't break until the summer (July?) but Gene and Urban likely knew about the arrest and knew shit was about to hit the fan.
They're all chickens. The rooster has sex with all of them.
Why is there always someone trying to spin everything? What possible benefit do you have from doing this?
If you die before you die, then you won't die when you die.
With all due respect what the fuck are you talking about?
Anyone else feel Gene’s statement that he was going to make a decision one way or the other strange? Made it sound like he was forcing Urban out ??? Or am I reading to much into that. I tend to do that all the time.
My understanding is it had more to with the upcoming early signing period for recruits and how Urban didn’t want to string them along or gain their committment only to leave later. My impression is Meyer and Smith were in constant discussion and Smith knew that Meyer was at that crossroads. Didn’t want him to remain undecided about the future for too much longer.
I take his statement in the following way. Gene and Urban had spoken about the headaches and how they were worsening. Urban, being a fierce competitor, didn't want to admit that they were debilitating him to the point that he could no longer stay in this profession (If you listen to Chris Carter from Tuesday morning, he had shouting matches on the phone with Urban telling him he needed to step away earlier this season, but Urban didn't want to.) Gene realized it was too much for Urban at this time but was giving him the benefit of the doubt. I think the "one way or the other" refers to giving Day a large raise or setting the PR machine in motion for Day to take over as HC. I really don't feel like it's anything more than that.
Urban Meyer is the greatest coach in Ohio State history. He's a living legend. I hope he can get the procedures done to alleviate him of of his pain. I wish nothing but the best to him and his family for the rest of their days.
I also believe we're in for a treat with Ryan Day.
Go Bucks! Beat Washington!
Onward and upward.
I hope the source(s) of his retirement leaks didn't come from Gene Smith. Intentional leaks to force Urban's hand isn't out of the realm here ...
"I don't apologize for anything. When I make a mistake, I take the blame and go on from there." - Woody Hayes
Judging from the level of pain he's in, if they were it was probably for Urban's own good. I assume men like Urban don't have quit in them, and that can be to a fault if they have chronic severe headaches that probably considerably lower their quality of life due to brain cysts. So, I wouldn't fault Gene if that's how it was.
But, what do I know.
Chris Carter said that a couple months ago he was shouting at Urban to step away, and that he didn't want to speak at his friend's funeral. I think the problems with the cyst are much worse than any of us know, and I highly doubt that anything nefarious was going on leading up to Urban's retirement.
thank you, Coach Meyer
much love, and best wishes for a resolution to your medical issues and decades of being a family man
After reading the timeline and the quotes from everyone....and I don't mean to sound conspiratorial...but I really think the real reason Urban is leaving is because the chasm between himself and Gene/university over the Zach Smith thing. Which obviously includes his suspension, and being scapegoated and having his reputation tarnished. Now, I'm not saying he doesn't have headaches and the cyst isn't real - I just think its being played up. As a poster above said, he signed an extension in the spring. He had planned to be here for at least a few more years.
But I could be wrong. Will always love Urban though. He is a legend and can do what he feels he needs to do.
The cyst is real and it is THE reason he is retiring.
In my post, I said that I wasn't stating the cyst wasn't real.
Also, in the press conference, when asked about it, Urban did say the events of the suspension/summer did play a role in this decision.
Where is the idea coming from that there is a chasm between Gene Smith and Urban Meyer. Every time Meyer talks about Gene Smith it is with praise and how good of a relationship they have.
Drake would make more sense. Go Bucks
OSU used be known as "The Graveyard Of Coaches". Urban gets to leave on his own terms being the only OSU head coach with a 7-0 record against TTUN. Not bad at all.
"Heavy is the head that wears the crown". I wish Ryan Day well.
"We get paid to score touchdowns, not kick field goals"
-- Urban Meyer
Well we think we know everything that goes on with our program but apparently we don’t. Will miss Urban for sure. He was one of a kind. No doubt. Onward and upward.
Be honest. Is this article just an excuse to try out the timeline marker tool?
New Day for OSU. Same noon for TTUN.
Thanks for the timeline Colin. What a series of events that lead to this decision. Injuries suck for players but they also suck for coaches as well.
Go get'em Cal Poppy - we are behind you !!
It's not a rivalry .............. it's a wreckoning.
Awesome breakdown! Call me gullible, but I believe the cyst is the only thing that is causing this retirement at this time. I'm eternally thankful for everything he has done for Buckeye Football and the memories he has given me. Go take care of that cyst and your family, Urban. My only tongue-in-cheek wish is that he could have the shunt surgery to remove all side-effects of the cyst and name it "Michigan", but alas, that brilliant idea has already been taken.
I have been sad all day. Going to be going through at least a few stages of the 5 stages of grieving here. No bargaining, but sadness, anger and acceptance for sure.
Absolutely love and respect Urban and Shelley and all they’ve done for us. Selfishly, I want more National Championships and beatdowns of TTUN. I also feel a sense of loss, of missed opportunities for 2012 (if our AD taken a bowl ban in 2011) and perhaps 2015 and this year. It feels like we just got going and now it’s ending. Those on 11W who have encouraged us to enjoy these times we’re right to do so. Nothing lasts forever.
And definitely some anger toward McAssHat and Drake. The lies and slander by the former coupled with the PC BS of that wussy cowardly sniveling Drake no doubt contributed to the stress and rapid health decline we’ve witnessed. If there’s any justice, they will pay sometime down the road.
Finally, God Bless Urban and his family. Thank you for everything you’ve done for Buckeye Nation and for our student athletes. We love you. We’ll miss you.
Go Bucks! Go Ryan Day! May you wreak havoc on TTUN, the B1G 10 and all of college football for the next 2 decades!
"Be a first rate version of yourself, not a second rate version of someone else." - Judy Garland
Even someone with serious migraines would have suffered far more pain with the activity of the maggots and the cowardice of Drake. Totally agree. IMO, without the maggots and Drake, he doesn't retire and the season is is even a little better even without Bosa., .
Saturday November 30th, 2019 - Urban, in the comfort of his own home, watches yet another Ohio State victory over TTUN
I dont think Urbans done coaching I know most people here dont agree, but I think hell be coaching in two years
"Nobody despises to lose more than I do"
I like the timeline. But...there's no way he decides to retire that recently. Shelly's face during a d after the Michigan game made it clear that she knew this was it for him.
I honestly hope there's a surgery or treatment that gets him back to health soon. If that leads to him coaching for another school? I'm perfectly fine with that.
During Urban's press conference he thanked a lot of people but no mention of the Drake. Enough said.
Yep. You nailed it in the sense that it was a larger part of the decision than disclosed. Drake played the whole "organization structure" card during the entire mess last summer (treated Urban as a direct report to one of his direct reports). Urban has an ego (well earned) that matches his paycheck. You can put people like Urban (or Saban, or ___) on org charts all day long, but at the end of the day, it's not reality. Gordon Gee stated that he probably reported more to Tressell than the otehr way around and he got SKEWERED for that. He was more right than he probably knew. NOT on things of academics, but on things of Football, the admin is iniverted, for sure.
I wonder if Urban pulled a Tom Osborne and announced his retirement earlier in the season, if we'd got the benefit of the doubt and gone to the playoffs?!
In the poll era (since 1936), OSU is by far the class of the B1G:
National Titles: OSU 8, UM 3
B1G Titles: OSU 33, UM 27
Head-to-head: OSU 42, UM 36
Major Bowls (New Year's Six): OSU 20-14, UM 10-16
Good question to ask, but I'd speculate not. I don't think OU and OSU were nearly as close in the eyes of the committee as they seemed to us as fans (the slap-in-the-face act of putting a 2-loss UGA team ahead of OSU confirms that IMO). Further I think journalism has devolved to the point where clicks/attention significantly outweigh integrity. There would have been (and are) articles from prominent (prominent, not respected) sources including ESPN steering this back to the Smith saga to make an extra buck. We love Urban, but much of the country and media does not.
Gene knowing this was coming and did not go after my favorite non OSU coach Les Miles? I like Ryan Day but Miles ranks up there with the greats of this generation.
JL class of 96
If he returns to coaching in the next few years, he will need some non-school affiliated doctor at the press conference to explain to all future recruits that his brain cyst is no longer an issue. Otherwise, his medical history will always be used against him during recruiting.
If he does that, and there hasn't be a 'major break through' in treating his type of cyst, it will (IMO) be evidence that he is really PO'd at Drake/BOT for not supporting him during the Zack Smith investigation and left just to spite them.
First of all I would like to say a Huge Thank You to the whole Myers family. There are only two Rock star college coaches and we were lucky enough to have one in Columbus. What he done for Buckeye Nation is amazing and will go down in history halls at Ohio State. With that said I hope his health allows him to enjoy his retirement and his grandkids and he still hangs around at the university. Unfortunately I think the way things got handled in the spring cost us at least one if not two more years of having Urban as our coach, but I also think that the pressure of being a coach in 2018 at a place like Ohio State is tremendous and for that reason alone I don't think we will ever again see a coach last for years and years. Thanks Urban for all the memories! NEXT MAN UP !!!! A new Day has dawn at the horseshoe and that will result in a all Day ass whooping next year in the little blue house up North! Go Bucks!!!!!
I said long ago the handling of Urban with no support was the final straw.
