Ramzy, you are good with words. Urban has earned the right to unretire and hopefully Buckeye Nation will treat him better than Florida Man.

If at some point he chooses to unretired again I will absolutely be fine with it as long as he does not go to one of four places and I think there is really only one he would truly consider.  Stay away from ttun, Penn State, Bama, and Notre Dame.  That last one could be tough if they come calling and while I would be very disappointed if he took it I would also get it despite my dislike of how they get to stand alone.  Although, maybe if he took it he would be successful in convincing them to join a conference.

I don't buy one goddam drop of gas in the state of Michigan!

HS

Ttun, Penn State, and Bama are not realistic landing spots for UFM. If he returns to CFB coaching, ND is the most likely spot, or maybe a program like USC.

HS
andretolstoy's picture

If Urban unretires, then wouldn't that mean his health issue with the brain cyst and the way it is being described was overblown or fabricated? Because, that's not going away if he has it, and it's not going to get removed the way it's been described. That is, if everyone involved who spoke about it is being truthful?

If you die before you die, then you won't die when you die.

HS

is the only treatment of the cyst to drain it?  they can't remove it entirely?

HS
andretolstoy's picture

There are three options that I read, one is to let it be. The other is a stint to drain, and the third is to rupture it and let it be absorbed by the brain. The way Cris Carter made it sound the doctors weren't happy about going in. So I don't know. In the end, it's none of our business I guess. Urbs has the right to do whatever he wants. He doesn't owe me or anyone else anything.

I'm a doctor and headaches from arachnoid cysts are extremely rare. It's probably in a bad spot. They may have been waiting to a time when he can have a longer recovery. They may also consider a shunt which is a permanent tube placed to constantly drain the excess fluid.

The other point here, I think we don't appreciate Luke Fickell enough. When he was around Urban could really delegate more to him because he trusted him.

Unfortunately, Urban has explicitly stated that his two dream jobs were Ohio State and Notre Dame.

I don't think he'll fully return to coaching though. I can see him carving out a dual role where he's a broadcast analyst and assists Ohio State in recruiting and camps.

If Urban ever does return to coaching I think he's earned the respect of Buckeye nation if he ends up elsewhere.

You can't measure a man's desire, and it's obvious that as much as he loves his family, and wants to live a life with them, he also is passionate about coaching.

If he were to return I'd be at peace with it if he wasn't a Buckeye (he'll always be a Buckeye anyway)

Urban Meyer left an incredible legacy. 12/4/18 Ryan Day begins his.

I think OSU will give him plenty of "reasons" to stay connected to the university but away from the sidelines.  Probably the same "reasons" to keep him from writing a book about the season.

There are so many things we don't know and we're better off for it.

With the amount of joy that Ohio State has brought me over my lifetime, and especially over the past 7 years, UFM has earned the right to retire and unretire as many times as he sees fit. Waking up on Saturday mornings, getting the gang together, pregaming/tailgating, going to the game, postgaming and inevitably falling asleep on the floor would have happened regardless of who was coaching at tOSU, but for myself and my friends, with Urban on the sideline every game felt like THE Game to me.

Hats off to you, Coach. Thank you for everything.

We're all a bunch of nuts

If Urban decides to come back to coaching, it'll be a punch in the gut. Just because I feel like he's "our" coach.

But it's his life and he's earned that. And honestly, what I'll wonder most is what could Ohio State have done to keep him. And then I'll wish him the best and move on (while secretly harboring the hope he never beats us)

Of course nobody knows except Urban Meyer, but I have a feeling this is the real reason he chose to retire. Also can't help but think the decision was made before he came back from his unwarranted suspension/character assassination. What happened to him this summer stinks to high heaven.

They really hate Urban down here in Florida. They just don't appreciate what he gave to that school. The arrests still happen in Gainesville, but for some reason, only Urban is blamed, even today.

Imagine how many championships he would have had if he was given the benefit of the doubt the last 5 years like Saban? Saban has been there 4 times, won 2. Urban twice, won once, both 50%, including a win over Saban. Certainly the Buckeyes of 2105, 2017, and 2018 were worthy, but just didn't get the benefit of the doubt. Still, the greatest coach of our era by record, and it is not even close.

HS
BuckZealot's picture

Exactly, like you I am always stunned by how many Floridians still harbor seething hatred toward Urban.  No one ever says, "I'm thankful for the two Championships in three(or four?) years".   You'd think they all went to Gainesville(in fact many have no allegiance to UF, just a hatred of UFM! )  It doesn't seem to be fading with time either, as they were most gleeful during our late Summer of discontent.

I, as the poster above mentioned, would hope we(OSU fanbase) would handle it better if he were to reverse course down the road and return to coaching,   I don't believe he will as I think Shelly would kill him, lol,  But I remind myself Urban is younger than me so.....who knows?  It literally would not be any of our business what he does.  He's been a great coach and gave it his all for seven plus years.

Enjoy the wins over *ichigan, ....I still remember the dark days of the 1990's....

A toast for Urban. Even if he takes another gig I wont be mad because he left here under his own terms. Personally, I think if he coaches again he suffers an on-field stroke. He's just too intense and I think he's burned out. The way 2017 and 2018 played out showed that. No way the Urban of old lets POS Iowa and Purdue teams thrash him like that.

And another toast to Ryan Day. If you turn into the next John Cooper you will partly tarnish your predecessor's legacy because HE was the one who helped you get the gig. Don't screw this up Ryan.

Great piece...but the thing that is sticking out to me in this, perhaps a silver lining for Buckeye Nation:  Harbaugh could go 45-0 in his next 45 games and still not surpass the record Urban put up here, nor will he ever be able to say he won a rivalry game against him.  That in itself is amazing.

I kinda think the only place he might entertain if he gets the cyst fixed, and there is an opening, is ND. People tend to get more religious as they get older, and Urban might see that assignment as somehow inspiring to his Catholic faith.

Urban has already said ND was one of his dream jobs. His Catholic faith is one aspect, but he was also a long-time assistant there under Lou Holtz.

Those last three toos directly led to Zach Smith's prolonged retention while providing the appearance of safe harbor for an alleged domestic abuser and too many second chances to a openly disastrous ambassador of his program. The first three are why someone else will be Ohio State's coach next season. They don't overlap. He's apologized for all of them.

Honestly, I think this just about covers it. He has character flaws, as we all do, and the focus on winning and saving face often times got in the way of doing what was right. However, it is something to which we all fall victim at some point in life. It's true that  he's made enough decisions over a long period of time to make questioning his character a viable exercise. However, the truth is that many, if not all, of those fans of other programs would be willing to support him if he was announced as that team's next head coach.

All I can say is that I am thankful as always to be a Buckeye fan and have experienced this seven year run, wishing only that his health and mentality had allowed it to be twice as long. 2012 was fun, 2013 set us up for an even crazier version we'd see in 2018, and 2014 was nothing short of magical. The years in between were highly successful, and are only seen as "disappointments" at literally two programs in the country.

As Buckeye fans, we're lucky to (knock on wood) have never experienced any extended period of irrelevance. I can confidently say that Meyer continued that tradition and I know that the foundation he laid (embracing social media, video productions, and his player/personnel support staff) will help Coach Day continue to grow the brand and bring in more trophies to an already stuffed case.

we have really been blessed with essentially back to back great coaches

Tressel from 2002 to the end

99-17 - .853

61-11 in Conference .847

1 National Title

Played for 2 more

7 Big Ten Titles in 9 years

9-1 VS UM

7 times finishing in the top 5 of the AP poll and another year at 9

Urban

82-9 - .901

54-4 in conference .931

1 National Title one other playoff appearance

3 BIG titles in 7 years and another undefeated season when he was blocked from playing and another Title game appearance

7-0 vs UM

ranked in the top 6 of the AP poll 5 times in 6 years and may still again this year 1 other year at #12 in the AP

And consider that from 1976-2001 we were ranked in the top 10 in the AP only 7 times in those 26 years vs potentially 14 times in just the last 17 years

We beat UM only 8 times in 26 tries with 1 tie now

man what a good time it has been to be a Buckeye.

Urban's dream job was to be the head football coach of tOSU. He's not going to go to another school to coach because that would be a step down for him. I highly doubt he'll ever be a head coach again, but if he was to do that, it would only be at tOSU. This is his home.

I think there is one job Urban would consider.  If, after a few years of success, Ryan Day - still a young man - decides he would like to scratch the NFL itch, and the HC job is open wherever Dwayne Haskins or Joe Burrow or even Matt Baldwin lands, that vacancy at OSU might once again call Urb home?  You never know :-)  I think he is going to spend the next few years on I-71 coming down to Cincinnati to watch Nate play baseball for the Bearcats.

Urban has now retired three times from coaching; twice in Gainesville and once yesterday. He was too intense, too obsessed, too competitive, too nepotistic, too blindly loyal and too undisciplined.

I think, Ramzy, that you've succinctly summed up UFM's coaching character, warts and all. Much the same was written about him years ago in Sports Illustrated when he was HC at Florida as well.

I hope Urban Meyer stays retired- at least from coaching. If indeed he's made his home in Columbus, then some accommodation from Ohio State to retain his services would be a great gesture. A few here on 11W have suggested that he head the Alumni Association, or stay within the Athletic Department as an Assistant Director.

Or he may even go back behind the broadcast booth. In any event, this laser-focused, driven man can now at least ease off the throttle a bit, and enjoy the fruits of his labor and his family. He's definitely earned it.

Go Bucks.

If Urban is going to stay retired, he'll need rewiring.

I enjoyed the article, but I disagree with this sentiment. Meyer's cyst, deep inside his brain, will dictate that he not return to coaching... whether he's 'rewired' or not. There was debate early on as to whether or not stress exacerbated his headaches... and we now know that it does. All headaches are exacerbated by stress. I suffer from migraines, some are debilitating, and they are ALL made worse, and occur more frequently, when I'm stressed. Meyer has had one surgical procedure, the less invasive of two surgical options, and he's seemingly not willing to explore the more invasive option... a shunt surgery. I don't blame him; his cyst is contained WITHIN his brain, not on the outside of his brain, so it's not a small, risk free surgery. If Meyer returns he WILL experience the headaches again... it's just a matter of time. I recently retired from a two and a half decade career. I was forced out after one final injury in a series of bad injuries, injuries that are not uncommon when men do what I did for a living for twenty-three years. I was told, "It's time to step away now, because while you could possibly return in some capacity, it is only a matter of time before your next incident... and that next time might result in you being in a wheelchair." Meyer could go back... but barring some medical procedure being invented that doesn't currently exist, it would only be a matter of time before he's on his knees again on a sideline in some stadium holding his head in his hands. Being forced out sucks, and I speak from experience... but it's time for Meyer to go, and for good this time.

When I die, sprinkle my ashes over the 70's

Urban, like Tressel, brought an eye for excellence which elevated the program in so many ways--real life Wednesdays, etc. I hope he finds a role at OSU that will allow him to apply his gifts in the service of other coaches and student athletes, and even the general student body.

If he does decide to coach again somewhere else, I can only assume he wasn't able to move past the treatment by Drake and could't work for someone he doesn't genuinely respect.

But it’s really important to point out that Meyer’s not leaving. He won’t be on the sideline but he won’t let the recruiting colllapse either. And on the sideline is a guy we already saw at the TCU game. This is very bad news for ttun fans who think there’s a changing of the guard.

HS
Buckeye812's picture

Very well written article. Pleasure to read. I really believe he is done though. I remember before he became coach of the Buckeyes there was speculation that Notre Dame was his dream job. I don’t think that was at all true. Ohio State was his dream job and what a job he did. Glad to hear that he indeed wants to be involved with Ohio State in some capacity. What that role would entail is yet to be seen but hopefully he doesn’t just go away. And if he does coach again then good on him. Hopefully that will mean he’s healthy again. He left us in a much better place than we were in when he came on board and that’s all we as fans can ask for. Now I think we can all look forward to the Ryan Day era and to the continued dominance in the Big Ten that was established by the legend himself.

I think 5 years is the perfect amount of time for Urbs to rest and Rejuvinate his mind, body and spirit. Yet another Ramzy article I'm verbally blown away by. I can't get enough of his writing. To give him the ultimate compliment, I have a co-worker who unfortunately is a *ichigan fan. Well...no shit...you're living in Ohio...but I digress...) and read one of Ramzy's articles. He finally gave in with this one and simply said "Wow! What an incredible writer. I'm not only jealous of the football team always winning, but that we don't have anyone who writes about us like this." I think that says it all!
