Urban Meyer Hopes to Remain in Columbus and Stay Involved With Ohio State Even After His Retirement As Head Coach

Hope he is involved as much as possible.

As I said on another thread, give him an emeritus office in the WHAC and let him mentor Day and wax poetically with the ‘croots.

HS
mittenst8buck's picture

Then he can hire Bill Davis to clean that office and everybody wins.

I hear what you're saying, but I think Urban needs to be far away from the WHAC. Day is going to be tested. He's going to lose games and you know how Buckeye Nation feels when we lose games. You can't have a legend looking overr the new coaches shoulder.

HS
Homey1970's picture

Key words are ‘emeritus’ office, not a 40 hour a week gig, ala Alvarez’s AD job at Wisky.  Just give UFM a place to come into the WHAC on some recruiting weekends to show the bling.

Day mentioned UFM’s future mentoring at the end of today’s presser.

HS
stpetebuck's picture

If the recruiting continues uninterrupted this is all great actually. Offensively. Day is like Meyer in 2008. He’s ahead of the curve. But Meyer built up and improved the smooth running recruiting machine Tressel left, who picked up the nfl recruiting ways of John Cooper. So it’s a lineage of great program building with improving coaching and offensive output.

The option might have been losing Day to Green Bay and having an ailing head coach.

But instead Meyer still meets all the recruits(maybe) and gives advice, while  Day kicks wolverine ass for another 10-15 years. He’s only 39!!

My guess it will be within one of the listed opportunities that were in his contract extension and were posted on here earlier today. I think he would like to mentor coaches, which as long as he understands his limits, would be great. Leadership and innovation of player opportunities beyond athletics would be another excellent position for him, he mentioned how he was appalled when Nicky was being recruited by schools, academics and professional and personal opportunities were not mentioned , which is why he started Real Life Wednesdays.

How about this? Urban Meyer: Assistant Athletic Director of Recruiting. Boom

HS

Sure would help to get a recruit some phone calls from Urban Meyer wouldn't it?

I'm pretty sure they're not allowed to do that.  Only the ten official coaches can recruit.

If he can't call, can he Tweet?

I'd rather be an hour early than a minute late.

You can do stuff from on campus you just can't visit. Pantoni is an example of that.

This is what I was thinking, he could still do what he loves best without the stress of gameday.....this would be a dream come true for any Buckeye fan

How about this? Urban Meyer Returns To Coach Ohio State.

Seems like the perfect time to create a title/job for him and let him be the next decades Ohio State ambassador the way Archie was..

"God has a plan," Meyer said. "I'm not quite sure what it is. Gene and I are extremely close, and we discussed that. And I hope to stay involved."

I'm guessing they are currently hashing out with Compliance what he can/can't do in terms of working with players and recruits, and will create a role accordingly.

Urban Meyer: OSU’s Barry Alvarez. Setting and maintaining culture and expectations. I’m okay with that.

If Day doesn’t work out, Urbs can pull a Bill Snyder too.

And so forth...

HS

Barry is an AD. Not sure Urban wants that role filled by his friend Gene Smith.

HS
Buckifan4Life's picture

Thinking Urban could slide into the AD job next once Gene decides to retire (and burn all the blackmail info he has on everyone at OSU).

HS
BrutusB's picture

You don't just slide into being the AD at Ohio State. Gene spent 25+ years gaining AD experience before coming here.

HS

Alvarez did at Wisconsin and did a really good job. Fulmer did the same thing at Tennessee, Lynn Swan has no experience before getting the job at USC.

Add Osborne to that list as well at Nebraska.

And then Tennessee turned into a dumpster fire that hired Kiffin, Dooley and Butch Jones. USC has churned through Kiffin, orgeron, Sark and clay Helton.

You just made my point for me.

HS

We’re talking Urban Meyer here, Brutus, not Lynn Swan or some douche at Tennessee. You lose credibility by doubting what this man, who has succeeded at the highest level at all levels, can do.

Hope he and Gene find and confirm a positive role where Urban can/will be a major plus factor to the student athletes at The OSU. . . and at the same time prove all the narrow minded, negative naysayers wrong.

HS
CreekBuck's picture

Whatever coach wants to do is fine with me.  I just know as an active coach, it's never easy previous coach looking over shoulder at you.  We'll see what the role is and how it involves the football program. The dynamic between Day and Meyer could be interesting.

You win with people.

HS

Can he stay on as a recruiting coordinator? Let Day take the helm and Urban can keep reeling in the talent.

Real Life Wednesdays was my first thought too.  He loves that thing - now he can literally spend days working on the presentations and lining up speakers.  It could be even better than it already is.

Would love to see him and the Senator on opposite sidelines for the Spring game. That would break all kind of crowd records. 120,000+ for the head to head.

Have to agree....that would be pretty cool.   Then again.....Tress is still the Pres of Youngstown U......would think he still has obligations there, including getting donations.  His donors might not wanting him over-shooting his allegiance to OSU....but the idea is an awesome one, that is for sure.

HS
RUNTOWIN's picture

Give meyer an office, a real office, in the WHAC. Make him an executive or associate AD, Football.  Charge him with developing culture, outreach to players and families, employment after graduation, some recruiting and let him mentor the coaches.  Keep him as the compass of the development of the culture within the program from somewhat behind the scenes. But keep him visible to the players and recruits.

HS
Doc's picture

That sounds like what Bo did at TSUN.  Having Urban around to bounce ideas off of and help with recruiting for awhile might be a good idea.  As long as he isn't stepping on Day's toes and causing conflict within the WHAC.

I'm glad he still wants to stay involved.  I suspect he'll be apart of some small intermittent things in the back ground helping the student athletes.

Was really hoping he'd make it through the season and then recoup in the off season.   Maybe have a less stressful year next year.   But I think the reality is that it is always going to be very demanding.  And with the hateful press everything would be much harder.   I think he realized this and said I'm no good to this world if I'm dead.

Blessings to the Urban Meyer family.

HS
Bigmarty's picture

Why we want him around is his values, character and loyalty.

I have a football in my family room with a note written on it from him.

"Marty,

This is for your winning record.  Urban Meyer"

Best thing about it is, despite having been a football coach. his reference has nothing to do with sports.  Some of you know he has great support for our armed forces and the women and men who are serving and have served our country.  He and Shelley have a good relationship with the Judge of the court where I was Chief Prosecutor for a number of years.  We began to see about 15-20 years ago a lot of combat vets appearing in court.  We believed they were owed a second look so we set up a program way ahead of what became much later known as Veterans Courts.  I won't bore you with the details but we got PTSD and drug/alcohol treatment, other counselling, through, the VA without convictions.....all wins.  UFM's values and morality recognized them as LIFE wins....Oh by the way many of the charges that were filed were Domestic Violence charges  and the spouses were involved....ironic, huh???  So next time you have a forum on UFM and his sincerity about protection for victims do your effing homework.

So like Tressel who got Nat'l Championship Rings for that OSU team that left for war after Pearl Harbor, this man and his wife have that special morality that the maggots can't stand.

God biess you Shelley and Urban

Maybe he could work 14 or 16 hours per week coordinating a successful recruiting effort. Unofficially and with no travel. Kidding but recruiting is where I worry most. Hopefully that is a priority and is well managed.

HS
Buckeyenurse1's picture

I just hope whatever it is he gets a chance to develop these kids off the field. To me that could be far more impactful of a legacy to leave than anything he has accomplished on the field. Maybe we could see a class being taught by joint professors Meyer and Tressel on leadership, and living a life that matters. Somebody get that in the works.

HS

How about we kick gene off the CFP Committee and appoint Meyer to it.

HS

Need to give Coach Day room to make his mark coaching without Urban in his hip pocket. A couple years teaching the Masters of Football Coaching/Leadership/whatever they call it. Then ease him back into Real Life Wednesdays and back into the WHAC within 5 years. Then make him "Coach Emeritus" and let him talk up recruits and tell stories and all that good stuff, once it's clearly Days team and program. Urban and Day can work out the behind the scenes stuff on their own, but keep Urban away from coaching til it's clear who's running the show.

Everyone on EsecPN believes he will be coaching again next year and the only reason he left was because he was pushed out.

I call BS to that. Coach is all about his legacy and going on to coach again would ruin it.
